I have lived in the U.S. for years and never get asked for ID for ordinary retail purchases, so in the context of being watched throughout the store, this felt like racial profiling rather than a neutral store policy. What made the experience especially upsetting was the contrast between the store's self-presentation and how I was treated. This is a vintage/counterculture-looking space in San Francisco, with a sign at the entrance advertising itself as the city's "No. 1" vintage store, yet I was made to feel like a risk object rather than a customer. My visit to Relic Vintage earlier today left me with mixed feelings. The unique finds and small business vibe is something I cherish in the city. A ring (not vintage but designed by an artist the store is connected with) purchased by my roommate was unfortunately the wrong size, and he was assured it was returnable within 30 days (see photo). When I tried to exchange it just a few days after Christmas, the staff insisted that "returnable" meant only exchangeable, not refundable. This contradicted the explicit language on the receipt. Their rationale, citing potential financial strain (YIKES), seemed inconsistent with the transparent communication one expects from a reputable establishment. I recognize the balance between customer satisfaction and business viability. But have to say that we all learn that maintaining consistency and transparency in policies is essential for fostering trust. Word of mouth is HUGE for my business (also small) and I unfortunately have already warned friends about the experience which is something I didn't want to do. read more

I am a huge thrift and vintage fan, so I have certainly spent a great deal of time on Haight street over the years. I have to say, though, that the rest of the street's offerings pale in comparison to this place! You walk in, and it's like you're transported back in time. The entire store is decked out in vintage wares (and even the display cases are gorgeously period). One of my favorite things is how all the staff are dressed. They are artworks in themselves, and it gives me such a buzz to be in the space, because I feel like I've gone back in time. I shopped here one time several years ago. The experience has stuck with me because it seemed very inappropriate. I was shopping for a vintage swim suit and found some here. I tried them on and the owner was a little too eager to be involved in the trying on process. He lurked outside my dressing room the whole time I was trying on swim suits and it made me really uncomfortable. At the time I didn't know if he thought I was going to steal something or was just a creep. I believe it is the latter. Not sure why he would think this type of behavior is ok. I see another review where something similar happened. I think that since most of your customers are female, and many of them young and vulnerable, the owner should be ashamed of himself. I purchased a swimsuit from him and now every time I look at it I think of him lurking outside my dressing room trying to see in. read more

I had researched Relic before coming in to shop. First of all, parking on Haight on a Sunday is the actual worst. But, after thirty minutes of dedication, I finally made it! The store is super cute, nestled in and it's very small and cozy. It is vintage galore with a wide assortment of many beautiful pieces. I found an absolute dream kimono that I am quite obsessed with. The ladies were quite kind and advised that I could try things on. They had some classic television playing and it was quite nice inside. They have loads to look at and even have children's vintage, which is quite fun. They were friendly and helpful in suggesting pieces that I might be looking for. The prices were quite steep in my opinion, though it is genuine vintage, so you have to fight your battles on that one. Otherwise, I had a pleasant experience and would return. read more

A divine experience. This place is a true vintage collectors dream. Wall to wall it is packed with relics of the past and museum worthy pieces. I was excited to visit on my last San Francisco trip and was delighted by the equally amazing customer service! I was sexually harassed by the owner of this store (Oran Scott) and would not recommend going here. I felt really uncomfortable the whole time because the owner kept making inappropriate comments towards me because I'm a woman. He kept trying to go into my changing room and would make comments about my boobs which was really creepy. I see in the reviews below that the staff was also racist to other customers. My favorite vintage shop in the Haight and all of San Francisco! The owner and staff are the kindest people you could possibly meet and love to patiently help customers find what they're looking for. The store spans a great selection of eras with a particular strength in '40s-'60s clothing. It's not too curated so you can still have a lot of fun treasure hunting and experimenting with what fits your style best. Items they sell are always very clean and in very good condition. They don't engage in the absurd markup that a lot of vintage stores in the neighborhood do. They are also very happy to explain the rationale behind pricing to you, which is extremely helpful if you are comparing two similar items that cost different amounts. At Relic, I have found everything from the perfect interview suit for my girlfriend to my favorite pocket square for me. If I didn't have limited closet space and multiple overcoats, believe me I'd be cleaning out their entire wool coat selection. Even when I don't end up buying something, I enjoy every trip in because I fall in love with something new. It's always really wonderful to support local businesses owners like Oran who just want to share what they love with the community. I hope his store continues to be successful for many years to come! Also PSA: it is clear that a number of the bad reviews listed are people who have mixed up this store with the neighboring Decades of Fashion (also on Haight Street). We were recently in Relic Vintage and loved it! They had some fabulous clothing, the people who worked there were great, and other people shopping there, dressed head to toe in vintage 1940's clothing were worth going for alone! We had had an AWFUL experience at a well known vintage store up the street (Decades of Fashion- STEER CLEAR!) on a previous visit to SF, where they wouldn't let you try anything on, and acted as if you weren't worthy of being in the store, so we were happy to see how accommodating, friendly and helpful they were at Relic! I wanted a wedding dress but I didn't want it to just look like every other dress ever. So I went looking in the vintage stores on Haight. As soon as I walked in this place I knew I was onto a winner. Oran seemed as excited as I was to find me a dress and immediately started pulling things out for me to look at. I ended up with a beautiful blue 1950s style two-piece, that I LOVE. The bonus is that with a blue wedding dress, I get to wear it forever, not just for a day. Yay! Once that was picked out, Oran then helped me to get the whole look just right, finding me an petticoat to poof the skirt out a bit, and a bodice to fill out the top. Terrible people running this store. As soon as I got in there was no greeting whatsoever. When I asked a question this woman told me what's out is all they had and as soon as I looked around she pretended to fix clothes and then continued to follow me around and continued to watch me not even working. She was a few feet away from me just blatantly keeping an eye on me! I can tell she was racial profiling & as soon as white people enter the store all the staff members greet them! I did not hesitate to write a review because stepping into this place (having lived in LA), I genuinely expected the service attendants to be snobby- with the level of delicate and unique pieces they had in this store- imagine my shock, my absolute shock when the woman with the black bob approached me gleefully offering me a dressing room to try on anything of my liking "even if it's just for fun!" She added. She was my reason for writing this review. Kindest, most personable vintage store worker I have ever come across, and elevated my experience of looking through this absolute treasure trove to a raging high that left me smiling for hours following my departure from the store. Normally I don't write reviews but could not let this one slide. The one girl who was working 8/22 in the afternoon was being racist towards my friend. Racist white worker was wearing beige blouse, beige skirt, and red neck tie and has medium length light brown hair. Worker didn't allow me help her put on a corset in the fitting room even though it was very necessary for her to try it on. She snatched my friend's tote bag out of her hand and took it all the way to the front desk and hid it. So my friend just stood in the fitting room and didnt even try it on though she wanted to. It's a good thing she didn't buy anything from this store. POC don't come here, unless owner decides to fire her. read more

Such a breath of fresh air this sweet store was. Took my daughter prom dress shopping today and if you are looking for excellent customer service and a pleasant shopping experience this is the place. The tags are labeled with price, size and era (1950's, 1960's, etc) It was educational, fun and totally memorable. My daughter and I will always remember today. This is a gem of a vintage store! I have shopped at vintage stores all over the world (Rome, London, Paris, NYC, etc.), and this is hand's down the best (also surpassing the many others in the Haight. The clothes are well organized, clearly labeled, stylish, and in great condition. The pricing is also reasonable. The design of the store itself, with the counter and display cases, takes you back in time. The staff are really friendly and strike the right balance between being helpful and allowing you to take your time browsing. I also like the fact the owner and staff are also dressed very well in vintage attire and clearly know their inventory well and take pride in their shop. (Given some of the other reviews, I feel compelled to add that I am an indigenous person of color and felt totally comfortable and welcomed the whole time). read more
