I'd rate this motel around 3.5 stars--my stay was better than good but there's definitely room for improvement. Positives: Contactless check-in: I booked online and received an email with my room number and door code the day before. We were able to arrive at our convenience and got into the room without any issues. Ambiance: We stayed in a 2-queen room, which was clean and modern. There were thoughtful touches throughout that made us feel welcome, like decaf coffee pods for the Keurig, a mini fridge with a freezer, a microwave with cup o' noodles and oatmeal packets, and a small entryway table. Beds: Very comfortable with plenty of bedding--sheets, a fleece blanket, and a comforter, making for a cozy winter stay. Parking: The parking right outside our room was incredibly convenient, especially with all our luggage for our brief visit as part of a much longer itinerary. We also appreciated that the lot was kept clear and well-plowed despite the snowfall. Location: Just a short distance from downtown Schroon Lake, with nearby restaurants and Lake Placid within an hour's drive. Opportunities for Improvement: Odor: There was a faint smell in the room--nothing overpowering, but noticeable. After a while, I stopped noticing it, though every time I returned, it would remind me it was there. Inconsistent water temperature: After a cold day outside, I was hoping for a hot shower but could only get lukewarm water. The new owner did a lot of good work on the place changing out all sorts of stuff like carpets, drapes, beds, TVs etc. He even added some corny but harmless decorations. I stayed there twice this year in the front and back motel rooms and everything worked fine and was tight. Though the grounds themselves are a bit dreary but the small pool was redone and welcome on a hot July day. read more

So, motel was a disaster. I'm trying to fall asleep but the room fridge is really loud every time it runs. Plus heating system is wonky and it's cold. Unrelated sidebar - have never stayed in a motel that doesn't have tissues... So at 2 am, I'm sort of awake. All of a sudden, without knocking, someone makes the door lock beep open and is opening the door. Thank the Lord we had the chain on. So I start screaming like a banshee. Hubby tells me to stop screaming. Ok, will do... We get up and it's the motel manager with 2 state troopers. Telling us they got called to this room. Ok what? And what makes it ok to just waltz in at 2 am? Cops or no, I don't think that's legal... Never again! Update: state police have nothing on their records for the night...Just spoke to the motel. A girl got a DUI. So instead of tossing her in jail, they put her up at our motel. But the owner was looking at the wrong day on the calendar and gave the drunk our room number and door code. read more

If you don't like cobwebs on the walls, dust everywhere, strange smells, heating systems that don't work in the dead of winter, and rude service, don't stay here. My girlfriend and I were stranded in a snowstorm with barely any cell phone signal, and we were desperate for a place to stay. This hotel somehow had good reviews, so we called and booked a room. Upon entering the room, the first thing we noticed was the frigid cold. We turned the heat up and got settled, soon noticing cobwebs on the walls, dust everywhere, a funky smell coming from some unknown source. As we waited for the heat to kick in we turned on the tv and followed the instructions next to the TV to connect to the smart TV. Unable to figure it out after 10 minutes and our noses still frozen cold, I called the office to ask for assistance. We were shocked by the horrific service we experienced. This woman immediately assumed we didn't know how to work the heat and repeated over and over you need to turn the dial up, and when we finally got her to understand that it had been a half hour and the radiator was still freezing cold, she responded well, it's a water heater sooo you're gonna have to keep waiting a little bit. She was irritated at my questions about the TV, and responded well, " It's just not in that room yet. Why advertise it IN the room!? After 40 more freezing minutes (I wish I were exaggerating this story), I called her back. She answered and was silent for an elongated few seconds before responding to each thing I said. She yet again insisted that I didn't know what I was doing, and finally sighed, saying she would try to get someone to come fix it. 15 minutes later, she stormed up to the door, knocked impatiently, and walked in to the thermostat without saying hello or introducing herself. Then she was like, "ok, well, guess it doesn't work, and the technician isn't available, so I guess I have to move you. She was clearly irritated by us the whole time, despite our patience. If you have to stay here, avoid the king bedroom at all costs. The two-bed one we were moved to was not AS bad, but I was not about to shower there, and the bed was uncomfortable, and the sheets didn't fit properly. I was shocked by the experience, considering the high rating. It was really bad. The nastiness and frozen temp would've been bad enough, but the rudeness of the woman who ran the office was on another level. I would rate this 0 stars if I could. Do yourself a favor and drive a little further to a better spot. And for how horrific it was $120 a night isn't cheap. Next time I'll risk the snow. read more

I don't tend to have high expectations for motels, but this motel exceeded my expectations. I stayed in one of the twin beds room. The decor was cute and suiting for the area. The room was well organized and felt nice. Snacks and water were provided in case you arrived after local food options closed for the night. The towels were great. They were soft, absorbent and actually wrap around your body, unlike most hotels nowadays. The bed and pillows were super comfortable. If I'm in the area again, I will stay here again. One tip, I stayed for two nights and my room wasn't serviced in my time there. It wasn't a problem for me, but it's something to be aware of. read more

Let me first say this could easily be 5 stars with just a few little fixes...just having someone in the office to get ahold of and talk to would add back 1 or 2 stars. I lowered to 2 stars from 3 after more failed attempts to get ahold of ANYONE on the phone or in person, just keep getting message machine and messages don't get returned. THE GOOD: The room was absolutely beautiful! I love the décor, the mini refrigerator, microwave etc. I thought the mattress and pillows were amazing too, others with me did not so I guess that is a matter of taste. THE BAD: The reservation was for 4 adults, they gave us 2 towels. They advertise someone in the office from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. but we arrived around 5 p.m. on a Friday and there was noone in the office to get more towels from....so two people couldn't shower. Kept checking but noone in the office at 9 a.m. either, so you're on your own with whatever they do leave you. AND THE UGLY: The shower head needs replaced, it is an inconsistent pressure washer as the head is clogged with hard water deposits. The bathroom has a sewer leak so that stunk badly! A puddle appears on the floor when you run the sink so I'm thinking the water is draining out of the trap all over the floor and that's where the gas is coming from. And finally, there were no disposable cups in the bathroom for rinsing after you brush your teeth. They do leave you really nice mugs for coffee though, so i guess if you don't have bottled water you'll have to use those. **UPDATE** More random calls throughout the day finally got me to a person at 7 p.m.. No apology for no towels, no apology or any kind of offer for a discount or future credit...just a claim that it was not sewer gas but a pilot light that went out on a water heater under the building. It's a quiet room with a good mattress and a hot shower. Definitely a motor lodge quaintness. Budget friendly, pet friendly, and the owner is very friendly. I'm in the Adirondacks for the nature, not a fancy room. This hit the spot. Lots of hiking and an incredible beach nearby. I read past reviews, in regards to wi-fi - this is the mountains, it is what it is. Bugs - I've made friends with a couple of cool crickets since I have arrived. It's nature. Weird smell- I opened the windows and aired the room out. It's an old place without central air filter. I did not have sewer gas smell. Definitely not the Sheraton or the Hilton, but If you like the very small town motif, you may enjoy the Maple Leaf Motel in Shroon Lake, NY. I chose this property, since it was in relative close proximity to the 2014 Adirondack marathon start and finish lines in the center of town (Shroon Lake), which is not more than 10 miles across. Most of the other accommodations in the town were motels or bed and breakfasts. The reason why I chose this particular property was that they were reasonably cheap at $74/night and close enough to where I want to be. The experience was pleasant overall. The photos on the motel website made everything good and confident in my decision to stay here. I would say that this place is comparable to a Best Western or a La Quinta, but has that motel ambiance to it. Not that it's bad. Its very budget friendly, which was the most important factor in choosing this property. The Maple Leaf Motel is located at 1370 US-9 in Shroon Lake. Basically take exit 27 off of I-87, drive through the town of Shroon Lake and you will see the signage on your right. You will pass Drake's motel and restaurant before you reach Maple Leaf Motel. Parking here is for registered guests and they don't do parking passes, so that was good. You can park directly in front of the unit, which is almost like a single family home, in a way. My experience here was interesting at check in. I saw a maid cleaning one of the units, but could not locate the lobby. There is a beautiful home next door and thought that was a private residence, until I checked the mailbox in front of that. After checking out that it was the same address as the motel, I investigated to find out that there was a side door in front labeled "OFFICE", so yah, i can check in through there. They accept credit cards, so that's always a huge plus, especially with hotel and lodging transactions. Very convenient too. During check out, I left the room key in the room, per the instructions left on the entrance by the door. It was simple! The room itself was rather cozy. One King sized bed with a smaller double bed. I got room #109 for 2 nights here and it was pretty good. The air condition worked and the boxy television was vicariously mounted on the wall, next to the bathroom. It wasn't like the flat screens you see in more upscale properties, but it worked and had a fun weekend here, enjoying the Adirondacks and running 26.2 miles for my health and goals. The room itself was clean and there was no problems with it. Contrary about the other reviews, it is a motel, so just got to embrace the entire vibe of the property and realize where you are. The scenery is amazing up here and the small town atmosphere is electric. The bed itself was comfortable and got decent sleep on both nights. The staff whom checked me in were courteous and friendly. They even wished me good luck with the marathon the next day. If you are looking for a good deal on hotel options while vacationing in the Adirondacks, you might want to give this place a shot. Do not stay here. We stopped here for one night between Montreal and New York. The only thing left was a cabin for $79. This seemed like a good deal - it even included a full kitchen. The "cabin" had the feeling of a place you would get sent if you were bad. Old furniture, not a single decoration and no place to sit outside. Everything in it was damp to the touch including the gross brown carpeting and the kitchen had the nastiest array of cooking implements I have ever seen. We stayed because I was sick and couldn't drive anymore that day. At midnight my boyfriend had to leave the "cabin" and go sleep in the car because the mildew was so strong he couldn't breathe. The only reason I stayed was because the amount of Nyquil I took could have knocked out a horse. Bad. Bad. Bad. No stars if possible. read more

No, indeed it's not the Sheraton, but if you're in the Adirondacks for the scenery or the outdoor activities, you may not be the Sheraton type anyway. I stopped there after being caught in a snow storm while taking my grandson back to college in Vermont. We were desperate to stop, yes, but the room we got was clean, warm, the beds were firm and comfortable, and the water was hot. And they have wifi. Directly across the street is a convenience store with a breakfast and lunch diner where you can get a good meal quickly and cheap. A fine place to stay. read more

When I entered the room, I noticed what looked like some kind of air filter or air purifier machine which was plugged in and running. Room smelled a little like pool chlorine and I couldn't figure out why, but I didn't let it initially bother me. After being in the room for about an hour, it became hard to breathe, my food tasted funny, and everything smelled weird. I went over and took a better look at the machine. They were pumping pure Ozone into the room which is toxic and harmful to humans. It says right on the machine, something along the lines of, "for industrial use only, harmful/toxic, etc." The machine had been set on high. So other then getting sick and the whole "breathing thing," room was still terrible. WIFI did not work properly. read more

I do not recommend this motel. While at first the hosts seemed friendly, the first red flag was when I informed them of a late arrival, I was told that the door would be unlocked with the lights on so I could make sure no one broke in. In the room, the sheets and blanket were dirty with black hair, the sound was broken on the tv, and there was no wifi. Upon waking up the first morning, I found some ants in the bathroom. There were more ants late at night, but no one was in the office to report. On checkout morning the room was infested with ants, getting into my clothes and belongings. Again, there was no one in the office to report to and therefore I showed the cleaning staff. When I spoke to the hosts on the phone, they denied there being ants and stated cleaning staff denied seeing them. I offered to send them the photos I took, and they did not care. They instead accused me of bringing in hundreds of ants from outside in the winter when there was 2-4 feet of snow on the ground. They refused to give a refund or discount and they were rude and unprofessional on the phone. I have never had such an awful experience and do not plan on returning. I do not recommend this motel. read more
