When we got to the boat launch I was happy to see that they had the same boat that I had, in a newer model. Basically, this means that they don't rent you the very cheapest base model kayak, you'll be in a boat you may actually really enjoy and be comfortable in. When we called to reserve John, the owner, offered the option of a sit-on-top (open boat) which I declined. If you like those, they had very nice ones as well. This can be a good option for first timers because they are a little wider and less likely to tip. They also have Stand-up paddle boards and tandem kayaks for rent for the brave. The price was super reasonable for two hours, and there is a Group-on for a 4 hour rental at the two hour price. Next time I may bring a picnic and do the 4 hour option. Canadice Lake is an unbeatable kayak location, it's the water supply for Rochester, so there are no houses on the lake side and basically no motor boats. When you hit the water you'll find yourself able to enjoy quite reflection. This is truly a kayakers paradise and if you don't have kayaks this is the best place to rent. John was awesome, and super accommodating. He told us about upcoming events and was super easy going. I will absolutely be back here to rent again. Pro-tip- if you want to set up a super impressive date, you can take someone for a kayak rental, pack a picnic and have a nice quiet day.

There was no one in the booth when I arrived - if this happens just take a walk around the building and there is likely someone just tending to the kayaks who will come back around. This is going to be a better deal than some of the other rental options, with 3 hours only setting you back $25. You can paddle to the left and see some of the UofR campus, but paddling to the right will allow you to head down the canal and see a lot more nature and views. The single employee pulls and pushes everyone out to the water, which blew my mind. I will absolutely be coming here again and look forward to many more trips down the river and canal.

So on my most recent visit to Rochester this past summer my cousin and I scoped out various places to rent kayaks. We settled on Genesee Waterways Center. Renting the kayaks was supper easy. We rented them for 2 hours for $25 per person. The rental process was seamless and the woman taking care of us was super friendly and knowledgeable. We kayaked along the Genesee river towards the canal. It was very peaceful and scenic. It was such a fun experience and we can't wait to go again! I'd definitely recommend this place to others. Also be sure to wear sunscreen and bring water on the very hot days.

The chute entrance into the canal is suited for anyone - but especially useful for elders or those with mobility issues. But the best part of Erie Canal Boat Company in Fairport is the owner Pete. He wants everyone to love boating and get the best experience possible. First he has and knows everything about the equipment and will get you perfectly situated for what you need to have an amazing time out on the water. What really shines is his personality though... Pete is a giver and is generous with his time, expertise and enthusiasm for paddling. He not only runs the shop, but helps get you in and out of the boat and safely in and out of the canal. He loves what he does and he loves helping you get out and enjoying the canal. His enthusiasm is contagious. He is simply THE BEST!!! We had the best time this morning and can't wait to spend many days this summer out on the water with Pete's help. Just be brave and go. It's the most wonderful feeling!

The water was clean in some parts and not in others. There were a few large branches we had to avoid. We got a quick good lesson on kayaking before we went into the water; it was very helpful. Our kayaking journey was absolutely beautiful. We passed a whole lot of ducks. They really kept us entertained. We passed a cute park, went through some gorgeous neighborhoods. Overall, there were a lot of trees on the shore by the canal so it felt very serene. I would recommend kayaking here! :)

Quick Take/ if it's a nice day and you don't mind sitting around, the food was good. Although…read moreservice (like many other reviews) as short staffed and lengthy. It was a rough night, but again, food was good, and workers were doing their best, but until they get staffing under control for that large venue, maybe pass. -------------- Food: Really good. I'm not a bbq boss, but I enjoyed my 2 meat platter (pork and ribs) and 2 sides (mashed potatoes and veggies). My husband seems to enjoy his pork and chicken platter with a really decent side salad, not just lettuce, but lots of toppings and corn. My 5 yo had the larger bowl of spaghetti known to man. It was messy for everyone, but good. Large portions, decent to share, or take leftovers. Vibe: We decided on the back patio. Very nicely shaded and an over all decent night. Not bad, but honestly, probably best for our family. Seemed very chill, although you could tell groups were getting restless (see next section). Service: First off, I will say all the staff we encountered were very friendly and doing the best they could, however they were severely understaffed (and according to other reviews, this is not a one night happenstance). There was one waitress doing inside restaurant and outside patio, with a trainee who was VERY green, one bar tender handling the drinks and inside bar and tables, and what seemed like one cook. The wait for food was getting really tough with a 5 yo who spent the day at the beach, maybe moments from burning the place down haha, but she held strong. Random: We picked the place because of the bbq and the mahi fish meal. Got there and they said they no longer serve fish. I ordered a Stella draft, they didn't have it. Daughter ordered a milk, they were out.

I know being busy and overworked is not her fault, but she kept loudly yelling things to the general dining room, which was pretty startling. We waited over an hour for our food, got the appetizer at the same time as our dinners, didn't get asked if we wanted drink refills, food was so-so and my friend didn't get what she ordered. The spinach and artichoke dip was very tasty, which was the saving grace of my experience. I know this is a bar, not a fine dining establishment, but I would have loved not to drink out of plastic cups. Also, if you're a person of size, you'll likely feel squished in their booths. I would not rush back here, especially when Hose 22 is so close and offers better food and service.
