I've been wanting to go on a sleigh ride for years, ever since the first time I saw a horse-drawn sleigh in Ellison while xc skiing there. But our fluky winters have made it hard to plan for a weekend with enough snow for the sleigh; when there's not enough snow, you can take a carriage ride, which is just like a sleigh but with wheels. But we really wanted to experience the sleigh. So, over this past weekend, my hubby and I, and another couple friends, finally did it, and it was everything we had hoped for - tons of snow on the ground which made the sleigh ride possible, gently falling flakes which made the experience magical, and the kindness and friendliness of the family that owns the stables, taking care of everything including a bonfire for warming up before and after, and a cocoa station. Heberle (pronounced 'heh-ber-lee') stables are a family run operation. They have numerous horses, an indoor riding ring for winter riding, and sleighs and carriages for Ellison park trips. The family has been working on this piece of land bordering Ellison Park (right at the corner of Browncroft and Landing Roads) for over 100 years. They love what they do and you can tell because every generation is involved and they all seemed genuinely enthusiastic to share their horses and history with us. On the day of our ride, we showed up a few minutes early and parked. Got out and went to the bonfire and started chatting with the patriarch (Bill?) and owner, who was friendly, funny, and full of great historic information about the stables, which allowed our waiting time to pass really quickly. When our sleigh arrived, the seats were brushed clear of snow and we were seated with us facing our friends (so no one has to face the backs of the other's heads), and then Bill put some heavy blankets on us (it was 17F and we had also brought our own blankets but their's were fine.) Our coachman, Jake, one of Bill's sons, was elegantly attired and gave us instructions, explained about the horse pulling our sleigh (named Buddy), and was generally friendly and conversational answering all our questions. The ride went so fast - they are only 30 min - and then we were deposited back by the bonfire where we had been picked up. In all we were there over an hour, between the ride and the conversation, and we all agreed this is the kind of thing we'd love to do every winter! I can highly recommend this place and experience, and I encourage you to check their web page and sign up online. They have 2 horses/2 sleighs and they each do 7 trips per day, so there are lots of options. My only advice would be to watch the weather and if you can get lucky with a snowy day, that's the best!

Made a stop by Tryon Park this weekend with my puppy and partner! I live quite close by and had…read morenever been, so we decided to drop by without really knowing what the park was like or what the layout was. This should really just be called Tryon Trails as there really isn't a park area at all. We only made it up the first little hill after the parking lot and a few feet in before turning around. The trail system looks incredibly confusing - this would not be the spot for a quick walk or drop by. Our dog had no problem navigating the trail we momentarily traversed, but it was insanely wet, marshy, and slippery. I would try again when things are dry, but with so many other great hiking and greenery options nearby, I don't know that I'll feel the need. Overall, and okay park if you are looking for a long haul hike. Looking for green space? This isn't the spot for you.

I mean, when in your life ... in the middle of a metropolitan area ... have you been able to get this up-close view of these types of towers? There is some beautiful graffiti & a mural on a nearby building -- def wishing I had taken pix of a gorgeous bird mural. We live near Highland Park, so walked to the corner of Clinton & Field Streets and followed the well-marked trail up to the peak (lots of green paint on trees, to guide you). You could also enter from the parking lot of Hillside off of Highland Ave. It is one of a range of four hills in the city -- Cobbs Hill, Pinnacle Hill, Highland Hill (in Highland Park) and Mount Hope (in Mount Hope Cemetery). Took a trip out on July 7, 2024 with Captain Kip and he coordinated a great day of fishing for us…read more You can tell Captain Kip is extremely knowledgeable and really loves what he does. His main priority is getting you hooked onto fish and making the experience as enjoyable as possible. We caught a good variety of fish on our trip including big King Salmon (biggest of the day was 18-20 lbs), Brown Trout, and a big Lake Trout (around 20 lbs or so). We were also lucky enough to catch a beautiful small Atlantic Salmon that we safely released. Highlight of the trip was the big king salmon and lake trout that that gave a good 30-45 minute fight that really tested our physical limits. There were several instances where we were doubled/tripled up, and we had a blast. Highly recommend, we will certainly be returning in the future.

We came here for winter snowshoeing ($5/person for rentals, max $15/family, paid by cash or check)…read more It's from 1-3 on Saturdays as long as there's at least 6-8" of snow on the ground (check their Facebook for updates). There was ample parking, the person who helped us was nice and welcoming, and it's not very expensive. They have bins of snowshoes to choose from, sorted by weight/shoe size and the person is helpful in finding the right one for you. There are benches outside to put on/take off the snowshoes and there's a bit of a learning curve in figuring out how to do that, but it's part of the adventure. Unfortunately one of the straps on one of mine was broken, but it was still wearable and we got there at about 2:15 so I didn't want to take them both off to go inside and get a different pair. They give you a trail map, but I don't think the trails are very well-marked so the map is not super useful. Because you're surrounded by (well-signed) personal property on all sides, it doesn't feel like there is a lot of space. 45 minutes was really enough time for us (an adult couple). I don't know if we would come back here, but I think it was a good introduction to snowshoeing and we would check out another place next time. Definitely seems like a good family activity and they even have hot chocolate in the nature center!

They always keep some animals at the center itself and still do to this day (just not the exact same ones). I recently went back here, not just to donate my Christmas tree for their trails, but for a hike they scheduled with Irondequoit brewery. I haven't been around the trails or inside the center since I was a kid and it brought back so many fond memories. of course everything seemed smaller than I was remembering, but everything does as you get older. I enjoyed visiting the classroom and seeing the animal room learning about their newest ones, favorite being the bunny and owl. I felt quite nostalgic, but favorite part was going through the trails again. the guides were very knowledgable about the nature center, I even learned a few new things I didn't know about the land. especially that it use to be a grape farm. we did a sensory walk which was so nice to be able to focus on the sounds and sights of nature to get away from the busy life of the town. I wouldn't mind going back to these trails again since its so close to home and a short get away. they welcome people back to walk through at any time.

I haven't had to leave a subpar rating in so long!…read more We came here for the trail, because the photos we found online looked beautiful. It's about 2 miles long and sounded like a perfect fit! We were sorely disappointed. At first I wasn't even sure that the trail WAS the trail. There was a sign clearly pointing it out, but the beginning was rocky, severely uneven, and overgrown. Okay! No problem. Maybe it was just a rough start? So we pushed on. But it got worse. You can tell that the land is often swampy, because they had a makeshift "boardwalk" laid out near the water. So mushy ground wasn't a problem. But the overgrowth got so bad that we opted to turn back after only about 10 minutes of walking. (See photos!) Based on our experience I would NOT recommend the trail, because it is not well maintained. But I did snap a picture of the lodge and the pavilion on the way out, and those seemed nice. So I gave it 2 stars for that!

Hiking is one of our favorite things to do, especially with the dogs. A friend told us about this…read moretrail so we met up with them and went hiking. It was about 5 miles long and had wonderful views. It has beautiful bridges and walking paths so you weren't walking in mud. Lots of nature views! Some of the trail goes behind some houses but it isn't terrible and is for a short stretch of the hike. The dogs absolutely love it. There are even sections were you can go up to the canal and the dogs can go swimming. Definitely coming back here sometime soon.
