When I heard there was an Hawaiian joint in the local area, I had to go check the hype and see if everything was authentic. From the outside, you wouldn't be able to recognize that it was an Hawaiian restaurant until you reach the door. The interior was very large with a mini market, the decor looks authentic and the owner and staff members are very friendly. In order for me to experience the island flavors on my palate, I ordered 5 items and they were good. Some items were not listed and wasn't available especially the Lau Lau. Service was great. Greeted at the door promptly and the cook even came out to say hello. I like the decoration of the place--lots of pictures on the walls. The food was delicious. Good portion sizes. The only thing I didn't really like was the cost of the can of Hawaiian Sun juice. $3.30 per can! The kalua pig and cabbage was in a bowl with broth. That was different (not the way I'm used to seeing it) but my husband said it was tasty. The lau lau didn't have any salted fish inside but she still liked it. read more

I suppose I'm reviewing their website...Question: Do you have ANY GREEN VEGETABLES?? All I see for sides are white and starchy. I mean, I grew up in the DEEP South, but my mama always had Something GREEN to put on our plates along with the meat and potatoes. No big sign on the building to know where it was-finally saw sign on door. Poor hours for business...closes at 7pm on a weekend?? Lots of potential but much wasted space and patio. Very limited menu not many options, no listed appetizers or desserts. I asked waitress do you have appetizers she said no but then I saw the spam roll on the entree menu. It is a tiny appetizer...came out fast but it's cold spam so it didn't need to be cooked. Good flavor if you like spam and sushi. The pulled pork had really good seasoned flavor but came out like a soup and I wouldn't run here to have soup. I'd rather have the pork on a plate. Good portions. The macaroni salad was disgusting. It was like I put a spoonful of mayonnaise in my mouth. Same with the potato salad. The waitress did bring us refills but was a bit slow considering not many tables. I wouldn't run to come back here at all. Please add appetizers and desserts to menu and expand menu to include your pork without it being in a broth like a soup. Utilize the patio and bar area as that is just wasted space. Get signage up on the building. Decor and music needs attention. Best of luck! read more

ONO KINE GRINDZ!!! As someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, this is as close to local food as you can possibly get. For people who have not ever had Hawaiian food, it may be a bit of a jump, but if you've ever eaten local food in Hawaii this is the best you'll find in Virginia. They are just starting out as a business when we are here so the atmosphere is a bit lacking but I'm sure that will come as the business grows. The service was excellent too! Authentic Hawaiian food served hot for dining in or take out. my first visit 4/1 for lunch. Owner Nicole is a loca gall from North Shore Oahu and her family served it up in Haleiwa. Laulau plate has choice of poi or rice and lomi salmon, purple sweet potato and haupia. Add squid luau and/or chicken long rice to complement this plate special for extra cost. The poke special is local style ahi - small cubes with hawaiian salt, inamona and ogo or choose the spicy ahi mix. Served in a bowl or on furikake rice. Other side of menu offers plate lunches in regular (smaller portion) or large (full) with rice and mac salad (we know and was good) beef barbeque, shoyu chicken, loco moco, kalua pig or kalua pig w/cabbage. The food here is so good! Made with aloha you can taste in every bite! It was like being back home. The owners take great pride in everything they serve and are so friendly to everyone who comes in. What a delight! My wife and I love the islands and were thrilled to hear about the opening of Spoon and Fork! From the aloha spirit of the staff to the amazing flavors of the food it was truly a taste of Hawaii! Kalua pork was super moist and full of flavor. The lomi salmon and ahi poke were heavenly with just the right amount of salt and the fresh crisp bite of the sweet onion. Just like being in a local lunch spot on one of the islands.
