We went to Lodi on the spur of the moment to get away for a few days. We needed a pet friendly spot that was not too expensive and Hill house was perfect for us! Here's the thing though. This is a home from 1905 so it is an older house and therefore it is not perfect, has some creeks and groans, and the back kitchen door doesn't quite open right, little things like that. But, if you can get past that, it's quite an experience! The various decorations and antiques really make this an unusual and attractive place to stay. Add to that, Jane was our hostess, and she was great and made sure we knew everything we needed to know. We had one of the upstairs rooms which had a bathroom that you shared with another guest, but that other room was not rented those nights, so we pretty much had the upstairs to ourselves, which was nice. Other great things about staying here include: there is a complete kitchen that you have access to so you can put things in the fridge, you can use utensils and plates, There's a microwave and a gas range for cooking and there was free bottled water and coffees and teas available. We also enjoyed sitting out on the front deck and having our green tea in the mornings It is also centrally located and in a beautiful neighborhood. Additionally, it is completely surrounded by a fence so we were able to let the dog just roam around and all we had to do was of course pick up after her, but make sure nobody was going in or out of the gate in the front. She really enjoyed the freedom of being out in the yards. We really hope others take advantage of this unique place to stay! Well preserved old home set in a neighborhood that makes you realize immediately this home has been here far longer...ornate woodwork, Victorian feel and the furniture to go with it... rooms are spacious, bathrooms are huge for an older property. Aside from the dining room table I will say there's not much else aside from the backyard to congregate with your group.The furniture in the living room is antique anyd not the most comfortable but again I think you're here for the experience. In my opinion not a great option if you're bringing kids along...especially if a tv is expected. Definitely recommend for a unique experience. read more

Everything is beautiful at this bed-and-breakfast. The woman that runs Hill house is lovely accommodating. The facility was clean. It is an old house from 1901 with four or five bedrooms for rent. It's absolutely stunningly gorgeous and everything was clean and comfortable. read more

Ten Stars For Lodi Hill House! If you want a super fun, unique, historic, relaxing and overall fabulous stay in Lodi...this is it! First and foremost, Jane the host is incredible! She is so friendly and accommodating and makes herself available for anything you need. The check-in process couldn't be easier. Jane gave me an amazing tour of the entire gorgeous Victorian mansion explaining all the interesting family history. The mansion and the beautiful property seem like something right out of a Hollywood movie! The reasonable room prices blew me away! When I first saw the listing on Google I almost didn't open it thinking it was over my budget...but I was very wrong! Each room is unique with its own charm. I stayed in the quaint Turret room and loved it! The bed was so comfortable and all the furnishings and decor made it such a memorable visit. The location couldn't be better...just down the street from the Lodi city center and all the great shops. I can't say enough about the wonderful experience I had at Hill House and the Ten Star service I received from Jane! read more

So much beauty in this old house, and I'm glad I was able to volunteer here and help others learn more about the Hill family and their home.

I stumbled across this gem while researching what else I could do in Lodi besides the amazing antiques faire on October 6 (a semi-annual event that is also totally worth the drive if you are far away). I needed a break from the city I live in, and I also needed to visit a museum as a requisite for a docent tour guide program I am participating in for Oakland's own amazing Victorian, the Camron-Stanford House. Where do I start? The house is apparently the only Victorian House in California to have all of its original exterior and interior, including all of the items from furniture, clothing, photos, and knick-knacks. The tour guide, Lynn B. took us on a tour that lasted 2 hours but felt like 2 minutes because he told the story as if he knew the Hill family personally (he was actually the paperboy for Maurice Hill, who lived in the house from the beginning to the end of his life). It was amazing. There is no website, and the house is only open Sundays from 1-4. Like the last review, if you can make it during this time, DO IT. You will not regret it. The reason there is no charge for tours is because the house is operated solely on the family's trust fund, and a reason for its originality is because it has not been touched by the state or the national regulations that would be imposed if it were made a landmark. It seems to be a secret because of this, but there is enough foot traffic to keep tours going. The reason for it being open only one day a week for the 3 hours is because there aren't enough docents to do tours. If I lived in Lodi or around there, I would definitely be a docent there. What more could I say? I feel lucky to have been able to make it to Lodi from Oakland on a whim, and purchased a few items from the house like an autographed music sheet from Maurice Hill himself (he was a multi-talented musician/poet) and a volume of 'Lodi Historian' which is a local publication about the history of the area. The total was only $4.50 but I paid $10 because why not? I got a very enriching tour thanks to Lynn and my brain has some good information about the Victorian Era that I can pass on to visitors at Camron-Stanford. P.S. I also had time to visit the San Joaquin County Historical Museum which was also in town, which is also incredibly great. Contrary to John Fogerty's song about Lodi, there was plenty to do and see on a Sunday afternoon. read more

This step back in time experience is really memorable. The neighborhood is quaint, the streets are full of trees and flowers. The house is out of a story book, large, white, stunning and inside is original furniture, dishes, carpets etc. It is like spending a night in a historic home that usually you can only do tours of- not live there! Jane does Everything possible to make the stay welcome. From home cooked beautifully served food on antique dishes, to explaining the history of things like the perfectly working phonograph from the early 1900's (sold for $65 back then which put it out of the league for most people).. Rose shaped soaps.. she cares so much about the details. She is the type of person who naturally takes care of people's needs, and you really feel the warmth. We really enjoyed our time there and plan to see Jane again next year. read more

After enduring thievery, desecration and dilapidation, the Hill House Museum is now under new management! THANK GOD! Such valuable history needs to be kept safe and maintained. That is EXACTLY what is being done now. Updates are rapidly being made to keep this wonderful piece of history available to the public. Memories are being preserved, structural issues are being addressed and the integrity of this property's history is being bolstered. This is truly one of Lodi's special gems. My friend and I attended the Hill House Wine and Art stroll Sunday the 7th. The ladies that currently own the home were very nice but sadly the event was very disappointing. The Wine tasting consisted of 2 venders and no art venders what so ever. Maybe 3 crafters tables there and a blond lady dressed as Marilyn Monroe. Not sure what that was all about. It was expensive $56.00 for 2 of us to attend and we recieved 2 tastings. The ladies were kind enough to show us thru the house, but it was closed for viewings otherwise. It didn't seem to be a bed and breakfast or a museum. The music was not playing and there was no food. Maybe next time they should consult an event planner. It was a strange 90 minutes for sure. Thankfully the street fair saved the day! read more

In town by chance for the night, asked a local business owner of Mokelumne Brew House (Super awesome place and amazing Nitro tea and coffee) where we should stay...she referred us to The Hill House...Jane the proprietor graciously took us in for the night!! My man-friend & I loved our stay at the Hill House. It was beautiful, clean, comfortable, historical, charming and very relaxing. The downstairs room is BIG and accommodating. As is the private bathroom. And wait - there's more. The front parlor room is so inviting. Time piece furniture. Beautiful carpeting and wall decor. The hostess was the hostess with the most-est. She learned it was my birthday and she made a delicious grasshopper pie. (No grasshoppers were used but a few Oreos and marshmallows were. Along with some other tasty ingredients.) Later she made delicious home-made ice cream. So good. The breakfast was the best - waffles and sausages. OJ. Yogurt. Coffee. Tea. We highly recommend spending some time here for your next weekend getaway. Lots of fun things to do. Had lunch at the Dancing Fox. Food was delicious. Definitely coming back. What a cool place! They only ask donations, and the docents aren't paid. Still, they give a thorough tour...explain every detail. It really gives a good look into Victorian life, and continues into the modern era. If you get here when they are NOT open, make a point of coming back. They only open Sundays from 1 PM to 4 PM. It will be worth your time, especially if you like history. There ARE stairs to climb, it's a Victorian house...you can't get away from it. But you can take it slow, the docents are patient. read more

No matter what kind of day it is, it's just beautiful. Learning all of the history behind the town of Lodi was interesting & the people there are so knowledgeable. We spent an enjoyable evening, restful night, & happy morning in this beautifully preserved home in March 2019. We pulled up after dark and the house was lit up just for us. Nancy met us at the curb. She gave us a tour of the home and we learned about the family who had lived there. It was really interesting. Breakfast the next day was great! The freshly-squeezed OJ from the tree in the back yard was so wonderful. Nancy sent us off with a care package that provided us with snacks and refreshments which lasted for several more days of our vacation. This was a wonderful experience which we would wholeheartedly recommend! read more

I booked this B&B for my parents and it was a wonderful experience. The house is so charming, cozy, and full of antique treasures. The host, Jane, is great - an excellent cook, great sense of humor, and very respectful of privacy and allowing guests to enjoy their own time.
