Four people ended up not being able to make it, and our party of 10 was seated together. The server was quite friendly and took drink orders immediately upon us being seated. He put those in while we looked at the menu. He answered questions about the menu and offered to refill our drinks. The spare ribs were excellent. The meat fell off the bone. The roasted vegetables were a nice mix and seasoned well. We were offered dessert when everyone was finished with dinner. We were well attended to without feeling rushed.

Upon arrival, the host asked if we had made a reservation. Not knowing this was required, we were initially pleased that he agreed to accommodate our party of three. Then, things changed once we were seated. As we were looking over the menu to decide what to eat, I started coughing due to a "throat tickle." When I took a sip of water from the bottle I had been carrying with me, a different employee told me that I couldn't drink from my water bottle in the restaurant. When I explained why, he continued to make his point. A waitress came to take our food order, but seemed unhappy with our choices. Noticing this, when she returned to take our beverage order, we decided on only water instead of the wine we had originally planned to order. Throughout the rest of our time at Castell, my friend noticed that this waitress repeatedly gave me looks of disapproval. The food was the only good part of our experience, and I would give it alone 5 stars. There is a traditional fire grill on which the meats are prepared. The filet mignon and lamb chops were perfectly seasoned and delicious! Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was uncomfortable and unpleasant. Our waitress gave me an annoyed look when I requested the check. My friend and I split the payment. As she was paying, the waitress mentioned the "skip the tip" option, so my friend obliged her. I went ahead and paid a tip as I felt her problem was more about her than me. Despite the authenticity and quality of the menu selections, I cannot recommend Castell based on how we were treated.

For a Monday night, it was surprisingly packed, so I highly recommend making a reservation. We didn't have one, but the maître d' was extremely accommodating and found us a table since we were staying at the hotel -- a big plus, especially when traveling with kids. The food absolutely delivered. The tomahawk steak was impressive -- perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and full of rich flavor. The NY sirloin was just as good: tender, well-seasoned, and cooked exactly as ordered. This is clearly a grill that takes its steaks seriously. The burgers were also a hit and an easy win for the kids. Despite how busy it was, service remained polished, attentive, and efficient, and the energy of the room felt lively without being overwhelming. If you're staying at the Amsterdam Marriott, Midtown Grill is a must-visit -- convenient, high quality, and worth planning ahead for with a reservation.

Service was okay, but kind of perfunctory. The steaks were fine; nothing to write home about. The sides and appetizers were disappointingly tiny for the price ($23E for 3 wee scallops?), and largely under-seasoned. Dessert menu is uninspired/old-fashioned. I would not dine here again, unless under duress.

I have tried: Fish salad (amazing!!!), chicken salad (was good) and the burger (very flavourful! loved it!) about $15 per person if one of you decides to have a glass of wine with the lunch. Would it be too corny to say: Oliver's, Olive-you now?…read more The way to my little yelpey heart is: 1) food 2) at least pretending you care about what I think 3) good service. Happy to say that after an initial disappointment with what I found to be an overpriced salad, Oliver's has redeemed itself! As per my earlier review, I began the night drinking with colleagues, unsponsored by work, unfortunately. It was pointed out that the beer prices are actually very reasonable (I don't notice if work is paying...). The service was prompt and friendly - no easy feat in Amsterdam! Rare were the moments when our glasses went dry or our mouths were left without crunchy, deep-fried goodness. My boyfriend and I stayed for dinner and each had the ribeye steak. The chef kindly accommodated my weird request to have polenta with my steak instead of fries and wow was I glad he did! The steak was good quality and served with a variety of veg. It could have done with a tad more seasoning or more of the red wine jus it came with, but overall, delightful. The polenta was amazing! It is fried, so no health points here but the crispy outside with a creamy centre - I think there was a hint of parmasan in there - was divine. Later in the meal, the chef got creative with dessert, giving me both white and dark chocolate cake. What more could a girl ask for? I'm glad I gave Oliver's a second chance. We had a great conversation with the manager Halpert after our meal and it's clear that Oliver's and Co. take customer service very seriously. I will gleefully drink AND eat here to excess in future. :)
