I had a fair experience here. They seem to have communication issues and aren't very personable. I walked into the office and it might have been less scary if the office didn't look aged. I picked this dentist because Dr. Hoffman was on my list by my dental discount group. He is a member of the ADA and has all these glowing Yelp reviews. I however will not be giving this group 5 stars. I asked on the phone when I initially called if they took my dental discount plan and Discover card. I asked again when I showed up and both times they said yes. Then when I was numbed up they told me they didn't take my plan, but after some discussion they said they would honor it. I asked again if they took Discover card and they assured me they did. I received about $500 in services and was told that guess what, they didn't take Discover. I was rightfully upset and Dr. Hoffman's response was a snarky, "somethings these things happen." The assistants response was, "don't you have another card?" Nobody was sympathetic that they didn't have their information straight. Everything could have been avoidable had I received proper information the first or even second time. The entire time the assistant was doing work on me she was complaining about some equipment that had been broken in the office. I just remember her repeating over and over, "that's why they make special wrenches to remove them." In the process she moved to a quadrant that wasn't numb! Her response to my reaction (ahhh!) was, "didn't Doctor Hoffman numb this section?" I had to inform her I was getting work done on the bottom quadrants. Communication people! The work Dr. Hoffman did was fair. I had the bottom section of my teeth deep cleaned and some cavities filled. However service goes a long way. Needless to say I wouldn't be going back. I'm the kind of guy who likes to search all over town for the "best" of anything, so it was kind of uncharacteristic of me to pick Dr. Hoffman based solely on the fact that he was a couple of blocks from my home. Fortunately, I've had two generally positive experiences here. On my first visit, I had a teeth cleaning, and man, the dental assistant (Sarka) really enjoys cleaning. She said so, and she really took her time. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it lasted at least 30 minutes. Unfortunately, on that first visit they found a couple of cavities (which surprised me as I haven't had a cavity since I was a kid). I returned some weeks later to get them filled, and had a pretty good experience. After filling the upper cavity, I asked if Dr. Hoffman could narrate the process for the lower cavity, which he did. I found this rather fascinating. For instance, I figured the stuff they used to fill the cavity had its own glue-like properties which allowed it to stay in place. Not so, he explained, as he added first a bonding agent to the cavity, then the actual filling material. He also gave me a small injection of a localized antibiotic for a little bacterial thing that had formed a pocket between a tooth and the nearby gum. For those concerned primarily with dental pain, I can report that the only pain I experienced was the very small needle sensation (mitigated by a topical numbing agent, so it wasn't bad at all) when they first gave me the novocaine. Sure I couldn't talk properly for a couple of hours afterward, but other than that discomfort there wasn't any lingering pain or discomfort from my fillings. A couple of people have reported that the furnishings are a little bit shoddy, and that's probably true. But consider the cost of getting specialized cabinetry built to hold all the special dental equipment, versus using some older dental cabinets that were built back in the '80s. Dr. Hoffman has only been practicing since 2007, so I can certainly forgive him for not having the best furniture--I certainly don't have brand-new furniture, either. read more

I found Dr. Hoffman on yelp, and he definitely didn't disappoint. It was easy to get an appointment, and the cleaning was quick. Dr. Hoffman was very nice and friendly, I would recommend him to anyone. The office wasn't the fanciest, but he's a young dentist starting out and does a ton of charity dental work, so that didn't bother me at all. read more

My dentist was friendly, and had good hands. The office was a bit run-down, but the things that needed to be clean, were. The low rating is because she'd told me that in order to stop my dry-mouth problem, I needed to stop using regular mouthwash, due to its high alcohol content, and switch to a costly prescription mouthrinse. When I brought the prescription mouthwash home, I checked the label, and it had the same alcohol content as the grocery store rinse I'd been using. This set off some alarms for me, and I've never been back. read more

I went here for a cleaning and basic checkup - nothing too fancy - last summer. I went because it met my three criteria: location, part of my limited dental discount plan, and actually had someone review it (and favorably) on Yelp, which could give me at least some minimal assurance. It seems like nobody I know in Chicago has a dentist (but let's not go into that...) I wasn't really thrilled with the service I got. It was the sloppiest cleaning I've ever had - I could tell the hygienist just wasn't that cautious. Nobody was rude, but the friendliness was minimal; I'm used to dental offices that really try to make you feel pretty good about having strangers jam metal and cotton in your mouth while you lay back in a prone position. Instead I felt cramped, a bit uncertain, and vaguely uncomfortable from the saliva-toothpaste-wash inching down my cheek because the hygienist either didn't notice or didn't care. I had very little interaction with the dentist, so I can't really speak to how good he might be. But based on my overall experience, I couldn't really recommend this dental office to anyone. read more

Thanks, Doctor Hoffman and very kind and warm assistant and hygienist for an excellent last minute visit on a Monday. They took me for a 6pm appointment, when they closed at six, because I had a mild abscess that turned out to be nothing major. This was my first time there. I can see how some yelpers might think the Doc is rude-- he's a young guy (baby face-- when he's 50 he'll look 30) and as a doctor the baby face combination makes him an easy target. He's not real faky (artificial) or over-the-top with his small talk either. I think he's genuine, though. I didn't get that he was rude is what I am alluding to. I felt he and his staff were professional, kind and knowledgeable. Not overly warm; not cold. In regard to the "he works only Tuesdays" yelp, I visited on a Monday and he took me, like I wrote, at 6pm when that was closing time. I look forward to following up this yelp with an even more positive review after my upcoming cleaning with a hygienist I think I am going to be ga-ga over. She seemed appropriately confident and skilled with her craft and had really good hands for my minor spot-cleaning today. Further, she had nice encouraging eyes that stood out in contrast with the mouth mask. Her smiling eyes made me feel safe in that chair-- among the metal scratchy tools that isn't anyone's favorite part of a visit to the dentist. I think the hygienist was the highlight of my visit and what I liked the most. read more

Wow!!!! All of these negative reviews about Dr. Hoffman's office are amazing to me. People are definitely entitled to their opinion, but there is a fine line between opinion and just plan dramatic. Dr. Hoffman is running a business not a social club. He is a consummate professional at all times, and considering he opened up a dental office at the peak of a recession, I think he has done quite well to keep his staff employed, a store front open and a constant revenue stream coming in to Humboldt Park. He provided the community with a service and that is appreciated. read more

Just like many other young adults the dentist is not my favorite place in the world but my experience at Logan Square Dental was great. I went in for my intial cleaning and everyone was very nice even though I was a little late. They have all the newest instruments and the cleaning was painless even though I had not been to the dentist in over 3 years. They didn't even yell at me when they found out I was not the best flosser. After my cleaning and exam Dr. Hoffman suggested that I have my top 2 wisdom teeth pulled and have my bottom 2 filled. He said that the bottom ones are the ones that people have the most issues with so unless I really wanted them pulled then I did not have to. One week later I came back to have the work done and besides the shots of novacaine I did not experience any pain and I was out of the office in about an hour. I am not sure I would recommend being awake while having your wisdom teeth pulled as it was a bit unnerving, but the nurse was very nice and did her best to keep me calm while they were pulled. It has been a little over a week since I had the teeth pulled and I have experienced no pain and I was at the office the next day as promised. I don't know too many people who can say they had a pain free wisdom tooth pull, but I can and I was more than happy with the service at Logan Square Dental. read more

I have to say I had an excellent experience at Logan Square Dental Group! I have been to a few dentists and this is the first time I actually had a dentist who is very patient and gentle even though I was numbed up for a filling. Dr. Hoffman's assistant was awesome too! I am not exactly a good sport when it come to getting a full mouth x-ray. However, Dr. Hoffman's assistant had a great deal of patience, which made the whole process a lot easier for me. I most definitely would recommend this dentist office to my family and friends... So, needless to say I am looking forward to my six month followup..... :) read more

I cant say enough good things about this place. After a bad experience a few years ago with a root canal from another dentist that left half of my jaw completely numb, I was scared of going back to a dentist. I had to get a crown for the root canal and anot root canal done. I went to another dentist a month ago and told me I need to go to a sepcialist. Well I found Dr Hoffman and his great staff!!! They all made me feel completely relaxed, did not scorn or chastise me for not going to a dentist all this time. They made me feel comfortable and said we have a long road ahead to get my teeth back to being healthy but we will take it slow and do it all little by little over time. They didnt make me feel or pressure me to get it all done right away. Now the even better part!!!! They do NOT do anything or charge you for anything you dont need. Example, I told them I had a full set of xrays a month ago and I could get copies and bring them in. They said no problem, not point in spending the money again and when I already had it done and can get the copies for them. Then Dr Hoffman wanted to take 4 xrays of the two teeth I need a crown on and a root canal on. The office manager/receptionist came in and told me they wouldnt charge me for the xrays since the Dr just wanted to see what he is going to be getting in to later on. All said and done, they did the xrays, a cleaning, and Dr Hoffman temporarily filled in two teeth that need the major work done next week. When it came time to pay I literally said, "Are you sure that's all it is"?!?!. She double checked with Dr. Hoffman and the bill was less then $100 (everyone has differnt insurance of course so it can always differ for each person). Dr Hoffman is my new regular dentist and I will be going back once a month for the next 8-12 months regularly to get my teeth healthy again and get my smile back. I completely trust him and his staff!!!! read more

Dr. Hoffman is excellent! I know many people don't like going to the dentist but I have always been scared to death to go....I always seem to be in pain even when the dentist thinks I shouldn't be. Dr. Hoffman, however, is the "no pain" dentist...he's AMAZING! I still can't figure out how he can do major dental work and not only cause you no pain in the process but there's no pain the next day! Dr. Hoffman is calm and friendly and definitely seems to have his patients' best interest at heart. And his assistant is also sassy and fabulous! read more

I definitely had a different experience. I have been searching for a dentist in the Lincoln Park area for some time and finally feel like I have found that with Dr. Hoffman. Him and his staff are very friendly and accommodating. I had several questions for Dr. Hoffman after my cleaning about a permanent retainer I have had and he was happy to stick around the answer them. If I could give Logan Square Dental Group ZERO stars, I would. LSDG called the day of my appointment to see if I could come in early. I figured they must've had some cancellations, said OK. What a mistake. The entire staff seemed rushed and uninterested. I have very high anxiety in medical/dental situations, which I was upfront about knowing that it is easier to prevent a panic attack than come back from one. They were not at all concerned until I had a panic attack once the cleaning started. They had to STOP what they were doing to get some anti-anxiety meds, which just seemed to upset them, even though I told them AHEAD OF TIME about my anxiety issues and the entire scene could have been avoided. At this point, I wanted to turn and run. However, in the interest of fixing my teeth and easing the pain, I stayed. Though I had asked to be walked through everything that would be done, they kept pushing forward, hardly communicating with me at all. They found a few fillings to redo, located the chip, and determined I would need a crown. I pointed out another tooth that I knew had lost a filling, they assured me was just fine. Dr H prepped the chip for the temp cap/crown while fixing the fillings, then one of girls fit the temp cap on. She seemed rather upset when I said the temp felt too high and I was not able to close my mouth correctly. She essentially told me it was good enough and I would have to deal with it. I get home, take a nap, and wake up to INTENSE pain in the capped tooth. Immediately call, leave a message since it's after hours. I'm in constant pain and cannot stop crying. Just breathing hurt like hell, eating was almost impossible. This is not normal and needs attention, right? Not according to this place. When I finally talk to someone from LSDG (3 days later!), they tell me some pain is normal and not to worry. So after basically getting written off by these people, I decide to take my teeth elsewhere, where someone actually gives a damn. Turns out... 1) The cap was not properly fitted, was rubbing against my gum line more than it should have been, was not affixed properly, and HAD A HOLE IN IT. Plus, they did not clean the debris from drilling before they put the cap on, so all that nastiness was stuck in there, irritating the exposed nerve. Awesome, huh? 2) The cavity that they assured me was not present was actually pretty damn large! The new dentist was shocked that they had missed it, especially since I had pointed it out. 3) Insurance was billed for a core build-up that was not done, and I never would have known had I not seen another dentist. I feel like I've been taken for a ride, and it has not been a good one. read more

I called this please asking about a re-treatment of a root canal,. The woman I spoke with at the desk was very helpful and nice telling me not to waste my money because re-treatments don't last. She told me it was better to get an extraction and then an implant- which also turned out to be less than the re-treatment process'! This one star goes to her. I came in for my scheduled extraction today and the girls were helpful in getting in and taking X-rays. Once the dentist came in however, things changed. I had heard a conversation from the waiting room between a man and one of the front desk girls. He was asking about what a patient looked like. She responded that he was a man in his 20's with black hair.. Then he asked "does he have any piercings or tattoos?" The woman said yes. He answered "those people can never have anything nice, so they don't know how to act." I saw the man speaking and hoped he wasn't the dentist because I myself have a nose piercing a a few small visible wrist tattoos. Unfortunately, he was the dentist. To start He didn't even introduce himself . I was sitting in the chair with my eyes closed after the X-rays and I was taking a few breaths. I opened my eyes and was about to sit up to speak but there was a needle right in front of my face!! I slammed back into the chair and said "whoa whoa!"he said "you need to sit still" I said "you didn't even warn me! I was about to sit up!" Then he put in the first dose of novicaine. I said ok, hold on, give me a minute. I tried to take some deep breaths with my eyes closed. I opened my eyes and yet AGAIN the needles was in my face!!! I flinched again and put up my hands in response. He said "you need to put your hands down" I said "you aren't telling me when you are going to do it. You need to warn me! I don't like needles but I can handle it if I'm warned." He seemed very annoyed and put another dose in. I started shaking and crying when he left the room thinking about how if he can't even warn me about the needle, what kind of job will he do on my tooth? It went into a panic attack and I couldn't breathe. He walked in, rolled his eyes, and told the assistant I needed to come back in a few hours because "she's crying and I'm not dealing with this." I don't like needles, it's true. But I get dental work and blood drawn quite regularly. I just look away and breathe. I have NEVER had a panic attack when needles were involved. It's just unpleasant. I talked to the girls and said he's such a jerk I'm not staying. I'm going to a different dentist right now. He never came back in, never apologized. I told his staff that as a dentist, he needed to know that people will be upset and scared sometimes. He has no bedside manner. He has NO BUSINESS BEING A DENTIST!!!! After doing some research after the procedure (I know, dumb, but I was 21!) I learned that this was super uncommon to have at such a young age and that the doctor that I went to had told several other patients of hers that they also had periodontal, SCAMMER!!!! So, I had to take my 3 year old to the dentist, it's I guess what parents do when their child turns 3, meaning I was forced to go so I figured why not get a cleaning too, and if they try to scam me into having some sort of disease, I will just never come back, simple. Well, they were seriously the friendliest staff at a doctors office that I have experienced in a long time. Smiling assistance's, friendly receptionist, coherent billing department, and the dentist was spot on as well. They loved my son and kept complimenting his cuteness, well behaved manners and how nicely he sat in the dentist chair, which is GREAT for a mom to hear ;) All I had done was a cleaning, and that cleaning ROCKED. My teeth look so much whiter it is unbelievable!!! I did get some old (white) fillings touched up too, they were from when I was 15, so it was due time and I also had a consultation on Invisaline. Dr. Hoffman was very good about explaining all the details to me and the difference between wire and Invisaline as well as a quote, which was a lot less then the one I got 5 years ago at the shoddy periodontal dentist. So braces here I come in two weeks time, yay! All that being said, I have recommended Dr. Hoffman to my boss, best friend and family members. I can see this being a long term doctor/patient relationship, which is definitely what I am looking for! 5 stars, yep, FIVE ;) read more

I have helped many of my clients with disability get access to quality dental care in the 60622 zip code for years. I am happy to say that I have found a clinic with excellent staff who are clinically astute and able to tackle all of the cases in a caring and efficient manner. The clerical staff are supportive and highly informed about all of the patient's needs, including insurance issues. Michelle at the front desk always takes her time to explain the insurance coverage and will always creatively work the schedule to accommodate urgent walk-in appointments. read more

They spread flyers in the neighborhood that said Medicaid insurance was accepted for payment of services. We sent an email to them asking for verification of that fact and if there were any possible charges that would not be covered by Medicaid. No response. Sent a second email. Again no reponse. Hello - I would like to inform you of a problem I've had communicating with Logan Square Dental Group in Chicago (Dr. Ian Hoffman) where I was a patient from Dec 2008 until recently. [I have no issue with Dr. Hoffman as a dentist.] I tried for 4 weeks to get my full mouth x-rays, taken in December 2008, sent to my new dentist. Each time I called I was told they were mailed to me. Today I receive a call saying that the Logan Square Dental Group never received the x-rays back from my insurance company and to contact MetLife for the x-rays. I was lied to for 4 weeks and no one bothered to actually look at my file to see if they had my x-rays. MetLife destroys the x-rays they receive after 90 days if the dentist does not request to have them sent back to the office. I will now either have to bill my current insurance company or personally pay for unnecessary x-rays. I would just like it to be known by other patients at Logan Square Dental Group that the customer service and communication in the office is not up to ADA standards. read more

Wow. Dr. Hoffman was one of the rudest people that I have ever encountered. I bought the groupon for a dental exam and cleaning. Turns out that I have two cavities (which I am most certainly not getting filled here). I asked him how urgent it was to get the cavities filled. I really know nothing about cavities and was not sure if it was a time-sensitive matter or if I could put it off for a few weeks. When I asked him if it would be a bad idea to put if off for a couple of weeks he said "No, you could put it off for six months if you wanted to." So I said something along the lines of "Oh so I could wait until I get my next dental exam to take care of it, then." He responded in a very snarky tone saying "Well I would never suggest that and I can't imagine why you would do that"--as if it were some absurd notion I had formulated all on my own. I reminded him that seconds before he had told me that it would be okay to put the fillings off for six months. He responded with something similar "I just don't understand why you would want to do that." He already saw on my form that I don't have dental coverage so I thought that it would be pretty clear that my concern was the price of the fillings. I really do not feel that this is the way that he should be talking to his patients. I will never be returning to Dr. Hoffman's office--he is a recent graduate who needs a reality check. read more

I went to this office after I returned to Chicago after Christmas vacation, where I tried to get an appointment with my dentist back home but apparently it's easier to get a meeting with President Obama than it is to see the dentist I've been going to for 25 years. I, too, had a Groupon. I have to say that the staff is very friendly. Even though Dr. Hoffman hasn't been practicing that long, he was knowledgeable and I felt comfortable with him working on my teeth. I had two cavities that I didn't know I had (I have deep pits/grooves in my molars and I guess the sealant that I've been having put on for a number of years finally wore off). I wanted to get them filled when I was there, but unfortunately I don't have dental insurance and I wasn't making very much money at my part-time retail job so I couldn't afford the cost of the work up-front. He was very accommodating and agreed to put me on a 2 month payment plan. I also liked the fact that he was willing to do the work the same day instead of sending me away only to have me come back in a week (see: my dentist back home in April 2008). The issue that I have with the office is that they're only open 2 days a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) when their office hours on the door say they are open 5 days a week (Monday-Thursday and Saturday). Last month I went in around 1PM on a Saturday to drop off my payment (in cash, because that's how they prefer it) and the office was closed. I figured that maybe they didn't have any afternoon appointments so they closed early. I went back the next day (Monday) in the early afternoon and they were still closed. Now I had wasted public transit fare for two days and I was pissed. I called to leave a message and someone actually answered the phone (not in the actual office but I think at the Logan Square one). I told this girl that I was at the Lincoln Park office, the hours on the door say that they should be open today and there's no one there. That's when I was told that they were only open 2 days a week. What's the damn point of having office hours on the door that say 5 days/week when you're only open 2? It's untruthful and an inconvenience....but apparently this chick didn't really care. I went back on the Tuesday and paid in cash. The girl who was working the reception area when I went in for the third time (Julie, I think?) was very nice and apologetic, but you'd think someone would use some common sense and have put a note on the door with the new hours. I thought about doing it myself. I'm mailing in my final payment today, and I'm sending a check. Sorry guys, but after that experience in February I'm not helping you out by walking down in person to hand you cash. And, it's why you're not getting 5 stars. Oh, and what's this business about suctioning out the leftover toothpaste goop after a cleaning? It's gross and left my mouth feeling gritty. It must be a Midwest thing, because this East Coaster is used to getting a little cup of water to swish around in my mouth and then spit out in the sink afterward. I made an appointment for 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 18. Dr. Hoffman has been my dentist for more than a few years, but the office lost my respect this time. When I showed up on time to my appointment, the office was closed. I waited for forty minutes just in case it was some kind of fluke. Nobody showed. See Ashley W.'s review from February of 2016. The same thing happened to her, which suggests a possible pattern. This is totally disappointing. When I followed up a couple days later over the phone, the lady who answered essentially blamed me, saying that the "office was closed" and that I was probably the one who "missed a call or a voicemail." After years of keeping consistent appointments at this office and always being courteous and on time, I found this response unacceptable and very unprofessional. As for my dental experience, it was okay. Dr. Hoffman is a very nice man. But this was too much, so I switched to Modern Dental. read more

I met Dr Hoffman when he was in dental school. He was at the top of his class, and was better than any dentist I knew before. Very good with the needle, and very personable. You can search a long time, and not find a better qualified, or better person in general to trust with your dental health. He also laughs at my strange humor, so he is compassionate as well. :) read more
