While in Berkeley I stumbled upon this place. Glad I did. I was so happy to support this establishment that has been feeding Berkeley for over 60 years. Since I wasn't prepared for the experience, I only had a spinach omelette, some grits, and their homemade biscuit. Gotta go back.

It was our first time here and we love it. The fried chicken was amazing, the greens was delicious. The rice with red beans was good. The service took a little long but worth it. The staff was really friendly. Come check them out.

This place is an old staple in the town. They have a wide variety of pies and desserts to choose from

Southern Fried Chicken breakfast! LOOK AT IT! So damn good!!!

HALLELUUUUUUUU!!!! Whoops. Sorryyy! Just had to let out an aggressive chant of JOY for that fried chicken and dem waffles. You can't see it now, but I'm slow clapping because whew gawd. Dis is some good shiiieet. Excuse my French. Why it has taken me so long to review this place is absolutely beyond me. BUT... they are getting the golden stamp of approval. Lois hunty; you truly are the queen! The food here is the bomb.com! If you like crispy, flavorful, fall off the bone fried chicken, then this place is for YOU! And they season that chicken for the GAWDS, do you hear me?! Had me lickin' my fingers in total and utter satisfaction. This is a breakfast that you must experience. The grits are creamy and buttered dooooowwwn! The biscuits are the fluffiest ever. I most recently order their chicken and pecan waffles to-go, and that waffle must have damn near melted in my mouth! It was scrumptious even for takeout. Neat and nicely packaged too. I will say that I prefer the sit down experience as the service is great and it feels so nice and homey inside. I'm not sure if they are still doing cash only for dine in, but I'd check ahead of time. I'm not usually a fan of cash only places, but I will not hesitate for Lois. The food is absolutely scrumptious and then some. For an institution to be operating as long as they have, it's impressive that their food is still hittin' like this. If you haven't already tried this spot, you need to!

2pc chicken and waffle, with a side of grits and biscuit. So much food, had to take the grits and biscuit home! Fried chicken was really good, the waffle was not my fav. I'd like to try to come here for dinner. It's a cozy neighborhood diner, I loved seeing so many celebs pass through on their photo wall. Definitely feels like a historic establishment in the east bay.

I arrived just after the restaurant opened, determined to snag a seat at the counter before the morning rush rolled in. The whole place feels like stepping into your grandmother's dining room after church on Sunday--walls covered in "family photos," vinyl tablecloths, and a warm, familiar charm that is truly nostalgic. That old-school fried chicken paired with crystal hot sauce? Simple, classic, and perfectly done. I couldn't help noticing a steady stream of pork chop orders, so that's definitely on my list for next time. I grabbed a slice of pound cake and a piece of key lime pie to go. The pound cake was dense yet moist, and the key lime pie had just the right tangy kick. It was comfort food at its finest, and it's easy to see why this spot has stood the test of time.

Honest review I excepted better for $57 dollars

I hate leaving negative reviews, but unfortunately I have to be honest about my experience. I ordered the macaroni and cheese, short ribs, yams, and rice with gravy on Father's Day and spent about $57. Out of everything I ordered, only the fish from the second plate was decent. The rice was extremely hard, as if it wasn't cooked properly. The gravy had an unpleasant taste and ended up being poured over everything, including the macaroni and cheese, which made it difficult to enjoy. The yams were cut into huge chunks with little care or presentation. The biggest disappointment was the short ribs. The meat quality was very poor, with an unpleasant taste and texture that made it nearly impossible to eat. I was genuinely shocked by how bad it was. For the amount of money I spent, I expected much better quality, preparation, and presentation. Nothing was separated properly, and the meal felt rushed and carelessly put together. I am very disappointed, especially since this was supposed to be a Father's Day meal. I wanted to support this business, but based on this experience, I cannot justify spending $57 for food of this quality. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so improvements can be made in the future.

Lois the Pie Queen is the spot you went to as a kid after church on Sunday. It's the post-recital meal that leaves you full. It's that meal you have the morning after a night out that brings you to life. This joint is a local establishment decorated with pictures of both bay area and national legends. So how is the food? Lois the Pie Queen focuses on comforting soul food. Expect yams, collard greens, fried chicken and waffles and the like. This time I went with the smothered chicken thighs alongside greens, rice, and red beans. The portion I received was massive and generously covered in gravy. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the greens were very solid. The food here always smacks and I doubt you'll be disappointed. I will say that you should come prepared with cash for this spot. P.S. the corned beef and hash here is awesome and one of my favorite breakfast selections.

I haven't been in a few years, but we were up extra early due to jet lag and popped in for breakfast. The place has stayed the same in the best possible way. It's cozy, like stepping back in time. This includes form of payment which is cash or cash app. We had delicious hot chocolate, waffles with fresh fruit and eggs with veggie sausage, hash browns and biscuits. We also got a slice of the Biscoff pound cake to go. Everytime I come here I feel like I am visiting an old friend.

Sometimes we just like to support. Regardless. That's my attitude about it. Each time I've showed up, I have had an absurdly long wait time. It once took 20min just to get water. And that was AFTER she took my drink order, of which I ordered water and hot cocoa. Half of my food was cold and the rest was hot. Example, hot burger, cold fries ( which were freezer burnt btw) and a cold waffle and hot chicken. If it takes almost an hour to be served, surly you don't send food back. But I did inform the host and he was nice about it. I recommend the chicken and waffles. I don't get the hype. I just think people go just to support.

Key Lime Pie bought whole as a take out. Homemade whipped cream. Terrific pie!

First visit 10/05/24 at 10:30a Nice sunny day in Oakland (84*F extended Summer) IYKYK- No, we did not find this gem by chance; We were introduced by an Oakland native knowing that I crave "pork chops & grits" every now and then. The day was meant to be with a great parking spot nearby and only 15 mins wait for a table. Our coffee cups were filled as well cold ice water served as soon as we were seated! The hosts were all super friendly and attentive which was very impressive. Just from eyeballing it- the diner seats about 60-65 ppl plus the bar area. As for food, the Reggie Special comes with 2 thick pork chops, 2 eggs and a choice of hashbrowns, grits or rice and 2 biscuits .

This was my first time going to this restaurant. I've always heard about it and was always interested in eating there. The food looked good, however; I was extremely disappointed. My date ordered the Reggie Jackson Special. It was two fried pork chops, eggs, potatoes or grits, and toast or biscuits. The pork chops were extremely overcooked, and weren't seasoned enough. The "homemade" biscuits were questionable. They were more like Pillsbury and over baked and hard. I ordered Chicken and Waffles. My waffle was flat as a tortilla. The fried chicken was too salty. I was disappointed because it was my dates birthday and we weren't impressed. The service was okay. I don't think I would go back. There were a good number of customers.

The service is so kind that it makes up for the next part of the review which gives the food a 3/5. The fried shrimp didn't have much seasoning but was crispy. The red beans and rice was a little mushy and had more beans than rice. The potato salad was lacking in flavor. These sides 3/5 I did enjoy the collard greens, cabbage, and the Mac and cheese. My partner said the cabbage should have had some meat in it to make the flavors more robust. I like it without the bacon and meat personally. It caters to a more vegetarian clean eating crowd. The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.

Unfortunately, it didn't feel like our reservation was prioritized much differently than a walk-in. Thankfully, the restaurant itself is incredibly charming, so we spent the extra time admiring the beautiful design and decor. The staff were welcoming and polite throughout the evening and suggested we wait at the bar. I ordered the Margaret cocktail, which came in a cute little mug. It was refreshing, well-balanced, and easy to drink. My only wish was that there had been a bit more of it--the mug was on the smaller side and filled with quite a bit of ice. To start, we ordered the chicken liver & waffle, which was rich, flavorful, and a great opening dish. My favorite of the night was the BBQ whole shrimp. You get four generously sized shrimp that were cooked perfectly, but it was the sauce that really stole the show. It was so good that I found myself dipping everything I could into it. For our main, we had the Jidori chicken, which arrived beautifully presented. Every slice of chicken was juicy and paired perfectly with the accompanying sauce. I also loved that the dish included 1 crispy fried chicken (less juicy but still tasty), giving you two different preparations in one entrée. The potato salad added a refreshing contrast that tied everything together nicely. Overall, despite the long wait after our reservation time, the food, cocktails, and warm hospitality made for a very enjoyable evening.

They focus on nostalgia, family recipes, and sourcing, as well as the forgotten impact of Black harvesting and culture on American cuisine and hospitality. We were a bit uncultured on soul food, so we tried to pick some unique items from the menu. - Salad of Annabelle's Gems - Chicken Liver & Waffle - BBQ Whole Shrimp - Line-Caught Swordfish - Cornbread - Greens The Salad, Chicken, and Shrimp were appetizers, the Swordfish was the main. The Cornbread and Greens were sides. I was debating between the Salad and their Crispy Summer Squash, and went with the Salad. But I think the Crispy Summer Squash might be a better choice. The Chicken Liver itself is an acquired taste and not for everyone, but the waffle was pretty good. The BBQ Whole Shrimp was the best of the 3 appetizers, and the sauce was delicious. The Swordfish was unique and not bad, but a bit too salty. Likewise with the Greens, though the Greens slight sourness gives it a bit more balance. The Cornbread came out on top, being soft and not too dry. Wife said it tasted almost like banana bread. It would be interesting to try out their other item next time, but shall see~ The Miscellaneous Burdell is in the Temescal neighborhood, off Telegraph. Easy to identify with the large lettering. The interior of the restaurant has quite a unique aesthetic and color. We went around golden hour, and the light hitting the restaurant was quite nice. The staff was very professional and sincere in their service. Burdell has a standard Dinner menu along with a Family Dinner menu. The Family Dinner menu also seemed unique. All in all, the food was not bad, and the service was good.
