We were Warmly Greeted when we Entered and We Grabbed a Table!! I Perused the Menu and ordered a 6 Piece Catfish Dinner with Fries and. Peach Cobbler!! I Ordered a Coke Classic for a Beverage !!! Rodney Ordered the Turkey Wings Special with Gravy and White Rice!!! He also Ordered Sweet Potato Pie !!! The Restaurant is Clean and Tastefully decorated!!! Our Food Arrived after a few minutes of waiting!! The Owner actually served our food to us!!! He is a Very Nice and Hospitable!!! He Actually gave us Watermelon Slices after our meals!!! I have not been to Scend's since they relocated to their San Leandro location so I decided to give them a try since I was in the neighborhood. Not the best idea. I ordered the snapper fish sandwich with a side of greens. The greens were an additional $4 but somehow I was charged an extra 50 cents on top of that. My partner ordered the Tasty Treat combo, and it was far from tasty. The chicken didn't taste fresh; it tasted reheated. The shrimp were mediocre and both of his sides were disappointing. The yams were bland and watery, even after we tried to doctor them up with sugar, cinnamon, and a bit of lemon. The mac and cheese wasn't cheesy and was also very bland. My snapper sandwich was underwhelming. The fish didn't taste fresh and the sandwich only had lettuce and tomato, no cheese (-_-). The collard greens were ok but they had a lot of stems and I'm pretty sure I saw mustard greens mixed in. The BAD, The prices are EXTREMELY high for the amount of portion sizes and flavor. I personally think the menu needs an update. I remember when Scend's was at their original location. I had not eaten at Scend's until recently. The food was served on dixie paper plates and drinks in red solo cups. I'm there for the food, not the dishes so no big deal. I ordered the lemon pepper wings (4 wings). They separate the drum and the flat and call that two wings. Disappointing. The red beans and rice were bland and missing something. The yams are my favorite soul food dish. The yams we were served did not have any butter, brown sugar or cinnamon. I'm guessing they were from the can. They were in a clear syrup, like a simple syrup and had a weird diet soda like tang on the back end. The kids chicken strip meal was so bad, the kids would not eat the strips or the fries. The hush puppies were delicious and the best part of the meal. I would not go back there ever again. read more

I've been meaning to try this place for some time now. With all the great reviews and overall rating I had some high expectations. The oxtail was amazing! Fall off the bone tender. However gravy and rice wasn't anything amazing. I'm not sure if it was just an off day but I took off a far for the collard greens and another one for the dry corn brea muffin. Greens were bitter sour tasting. I couldn't finish it. It wasn't for me. I love collard greens too!! The corn muffin was overly dry. The taste is really good but I couldn't get past the dryness. I'm writing this review before reviewing the reviews on this restaurant which is unlike me. But here's why..... Today, my Mom and I attended a homegoing service for one of her closest friends. The family had been trying to figure out food for the repast and somehow someone linked them to Scend's Restaurant to cater this event. Top notch all around- the family purchased the chicken from outside the venue but everything else was from Scend's. EVERYONE bragged about how good the food was- from the quality of the food- to the taste- to the seasoning and portions to the overall customer experience. Personally, I don't like mac' n cheese and I will tell you it was great! As a vegetarian, I only ate the greens and mac n' cheese but everyone around me LOVED the fried and baked chicken, the cornbread muffins and the star of the show the peach cobbler. TRY THEM OUT! I ordered delivery via Uber Eats from here yesterday (Jan 2nd), and I have mixed feelings about the meal. I'll start with the positives: The cornbread was delicious--fresh with great texture. The catfish was also on point and actually pretty well-seasoned. However, the sides were a major letdown. I had the black-eyed peas, cabbage, collards, and mac & cheese, and they were all surprisingly bland. I understand that a restaurant often has to "cook for everyone" and might try to keep things neutral, but this is Southern cooking. It relies on seasoning! Even just a little salt would have gone a long way. It's hard to enjoy Soul Food when the sides taste like they haven't been seasoned at all. I'm trying to lighten up one my meat consumption so I decided to order the Veggie Plate (which comes with 4 sides): Yams, Mac N Cheese, Black Eyed Peas, and Greens. This is an awesome place with great food and friendly service. Dion, Mrs. Cassie and the whole team took special care to make us feel at home. We celebrated two birthdays here in the past two months with our large and loud family. Adriana and the staff provided service with a smile. We laughed, dance and sang the time away. Honest review. This place WASN'T it. Customer service was beautiful, but the food disappointed. The fried snapper was pretty good and crispy. I do not appreciate frozen prawns. They cost toooo much not to be prepared fresh like the fish. The green were tender but had a sweet taste that I didn't absolutely love, at all. The Mac n cheese was gritty, not cheesy enough, and I couldn't finish it! Texture is equally important to taste. The peach cobbler. I forgot to take a picture but it was also GRITTY! Why?? Right on E 14th st in San Leandro, this is not by any means fancy but it's clean, they are nice in there and everything we tried was great! The price is right for some good soul food. Came in here a few nights ago and picked up some fried catfish & lemon pepper wings. The 6 piece catfish I got was fried to perfection and had good flavor. Good size pieces too. The coleslaw that came with fish was one of the better ones. The lemon pepper wings was okay, not enough flavor and over cooked a little, but still edible. I thought it would be smothered however it was oven roasted/baked. It had little to no taste or seasoning. The dressing had a large amount of poultry seasoning as it was sagey and sweet. I never got to the greens or gravy, so disappointed with the other items. The food quality was not as I remember it to be. For years, I passed this location up and I've always wanted to stop and give them a try. in February my husband and I stopped by and I ordered the fried chicken wing meal with a side of red beans and rice and collards. My husband went with the oxtails over rice and gravy. My honest opinion is that the food lacked salt and seasoning, and I am someone who does not add a lot of salt to my food. Requested water with ice and lemon, served in plastic cups, appetizers served on paper plates and burnt, entree served on a paper plate. Order four (4) wings which came on a paper plate and was dry, sides served in plastic to go containers not hot. This was my first uber eats delivery. I thought I had to worry about the Uber driver but it was actually the food. It was terrible the chicken wings were a little burnt and had no flavor at all. This was my first time visiting this restaurant. Small, but lots of history on the walls. I ordered rib tips size a quarter maybe a dime about a cup worth with a lot of smoke flavor it was overwhelming. Price $17 with one side order which was mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was low salt. I also ordered the meatloaf because it was on special and I didn't want any gravy. Came with cornbread dressing soaked in sage and seasoning. The meatloaf has no taste! Maybe that's why the cornbread dressing with overwhelming sage ingredients, would hold up the meatloaf. However, neither was good alone. This was $17 the container had half a cup of crumbling, sage dressing. Maybe that was enough because I couldn't eat a spoonful. The candied yams were very sweet little cinnamon or butter. I make the statements because I once cooked for 13 years and a little seasoning in food won't kill it. The candied yams were sugar on sweet potatoes. The cornbread was so dry it crumbled at the touch, a little oil wouldn't hurt. The bread slices given couldn't get any cheaper. Overall, I couldn't even eat the meal. My total was almost $ 60, adding in desserts. They had a homemade cake in there. They were truly homemade cakes. The peach cobbler was delicious. A home run! The owner treated his staff respectfully they seemed to appreciate him. The restaurant was clean not many people were eating in, at the time I was there. One of the most difficult aspects of sheltering-in-place is trying to figure out what to cook day to day. It was fun the first week or two, but making the same dishes over and over again got old very quickly. Finding a restaurant that offered food that remained delicious after the drive home (or delivery has been tricky. Many places have wonderful dishes, but they need to be eaten right after they are plated, as the heat from the cooking process is elementary to the taste and texture. In addition, going out to eat too much now is more costly than in the before times (both in terms of money and physical exposure). Better to get enough food for leftovers, to last multiple meals. Thankfully, Scends has been a godsend. I call in my order, drive to the restaurant, where my food is hot and waiting. After I pay and drive home, the food is still hot and the textures hold up. Our current order (mind you, for 2 people) is the Boomer's Appetizer (3 fish, 3 wings, 2 pork chops and 2 sides) and the LD's Delicacy (5 fish, 5 wings and 2 sides). My wife's favorite dishes are the pork chops and the greens, while I rave over the snapper and the mac & cheese. And the fried okra are very snackable: order the large if you're sharing... or maybe not. While I'd love to down all this food in one setting, this is enough for 2 meals for us. Even eating the proteins cold are fine, though some of the sides are better warmed up. Every time I've picked up food here, the staff are very kind and friendly. I do not know this place obsession with watery food but it's not good at all. Now the fries were just the average overcooked frozen fries pretty blah. The fried chicken? Craving Southern-style fish and not really wanting to drive to my beloved Fat Fish in Berkeley, I searched Yelp. I've driven by Scend's, but never gave it much thought. Why was I not thinking? The store used to be in Emeryville and relocated just over a year ago. I loved their Southern home-cooking. I was reared in North Oakland, no not Rockridge or Temescal. I'm a homeboy! Kinda hard to find street parking on E. 14th. I pulled into a nearby strip mall lot about 100 ft away. Surprise, I later found out it's okay to park there. A nice woman greeted me, handed me a menu and told me to find a seat anywhere. Sweet little store with small wooden tables and chairs. Good assortment of condiments, including Crystal Hot Sauce. A bit of a dine-in lunch crowd and a brisk carry out. The staff, which included a pair of sweet Grandmas just busy, chatting, and laughing. Ordered a lunch special of a pork chop, two catfish, and fries. I included a small bowl of greens, which came with hot water cornbread. Sweet tea and Fanta sodas are available, however I had the choice of Diet Pepsi or Coke. My lunch came out hot. So hot I even had to wait a bit for it to cool down. Good thing my iPhone camera eats first! The catfish consisted of two good sized filets fried in a cornbread batter. Delicious with a homemade tarter sauce. Yes, there was relish mixed in. The greens were an excellent side. The simplicity of well-cooked and perfectly seasoned collard greens can never be underestimated. I reckon they were seasoned with just the right amount of cider vinegar, bacon fat, and chicken stock. The thin cut pork chop definitely was dry rubbed with Cajun spices and quickly deep-fried. Yummy with every bite. Crinkled cut fries were crispy outside and hot moist inside. Dusted lightly with Cajun spice too. So stuffed, my darling server wrapped up my cornbread to carry home. I had to just sit for a moment to reflect on what a fine meal I enjoyed. A handsome man came out from the back of the house and was very courteous in asking how my meal was. Formerly known in the North Oakland area, I finally made it to their San Leandro relocation. I stopped by here for lunch. They're the only fried snapper sandwich place (that I know of) in the area. And since I'm familiar with their food (frequent diner at their old location) I knew the food would be good. I ordered a snapper burger. Hold the mayo but yes to mustard, lettuce and tomato. They did hold the mayo, but thought my choice would make it dry but once I hook it up how I like, it's actually very messy lol. Instead of mayo, I use tarter sauce and lots of hot sauce, which they provide. I should have had them add cheddar cheese. That would have made my snapper burger even more delicious. It was already hella good. I ate it so fast I had hot sauce dripping everywhere lol. The snapper burger was filling so I didn't need fries or any sides. I wanted to take a moment and write a review on this restaurant. We have been trying to make it down and finally made it on the 3rd of the month. It happened to be my dads birthday. He wanted some chicken, black eyed peas, and greens. When we got there it smelled AMAZING outside. The restaurant itself is small. But that's ok , the best places usually are. Service was very attentive. Friendly, and informative. We ordered the ribs and link, with yam and greens 6 piece fish(snapper) with Mac, cabbage, and large rice and gravy. 4 piece chicken wings,black eyed peas, and greens. Let me tell you something! In the car we opened the greens and Boy!!!!! They were so flavorful! Everything was delicious. The one one thing I probably would get was the cabbage. Just because it lacked a little flavor.
