The place was empty yet it took her a long time to bring us a menu. The place called Lois the pie Queen, yet they only had two pies. The place is a hole in the wall adorn with photos of owner and celebrities. It seems like it was once a jewel of a place. But not anymore. The food was old. I was so disappointed. I give it a one star and recommend they train the server to be welcoming to the customers, as well as serve fresh food and finally either have pies like the name states or change the name. Disgusting This restaurant has horrible management and lacks business accountability. 9 days ago on 11/14/22 I left a positive Yelp review after having their peach cobbler cheesecake, lemon icebox and fried chicken breakfast . The pie was so good I called a few days later at 10:55am to place an early thanksgiving order after the manager informed us we had to call before Friday 11/18/22 for early order This place (of course) had no way to verify your order, it was all taken over the phone no email or ticket to confirm but we trusted them for our ONLY holiday dessert My husband goes to this place this morning and not only is it unavailable but they displaced the blame on us- that WE ordered some random a$$ cinnamon bun dessert thingy that we've never tasted (I hate cinnamon rolls). As if a customer doesn't know what we wanted. It's the lack of accountability for me. A simple - "oops that's not the order we have" or "oops we F***d up! or "ooops we suck at modern technology and should've had a better preordering system but we'll contact you at closing to see what's left " would've sufficed. Cash only and masks required. Expect to wait for both to be seated and service. They're hustlin' hard but just short-staffed for such a popular place. We came late in the day, around 2pm, and they ran out of a lot of things like homemade biscuits and pecan waffles. They didn't have peach cobbler either but hella different cheesecakes and pies. We shared the pork chop plate and I ordered a key lime raspberry pie. Portions are generous but the hashbrowns weren't crispy at all (maybe I should've requested it). I'm not normally a fan of key lime because it can be too tart, but this raspberry combo was a hit! Def would consider ordering pies for special occasions from them. First time having a lemon ice box pie and it did not disappoint. Super refreshing and flavorful. The chicken was also fantastic! I got the chicken with eggs, hashbrowns, and biscuits. Next time, I will ask them to overcook my potatoes (I typically like them slightly burned, and these came softer than I liked). I would order both the chicken and the pie again. The place gets pretty busy, so it's probably best to order ahead but still expect some sort of wait. Street parking was fairly easy. Me and my cousin went to this location in the morning. Wasn't very business we sat down and ordered our food I got French toast scrambled eggs and pineapple juice my cousin got chicken and waffles she didn't like the chicken was a lil hard to come apart. The food is good, but the online pick-up options are far more limited and expensive then ordering over the phone or eating inside. However, at 10:40, this place was slammed and understaffed, meaning I couldn't even talk to the waitress, who left me hanging for a five minutes or more while she rushed to serve others. I can't blame her, but I much rather gotten the food I wanted and paid for it in cash. Instead I stepped out of that calamity and put my order in over the phone and hung out in the car until I was told it was ready. Regardless, of how I got the food, it was solid. The biscuits where fluffy and moist and the bacon was perfectly crisp. Their turkey greens rank among the best in the bay, and is the main reason why I bother. 10/20/24 - I came here with my family after Sunday service. Two of us had heard about this place from friends and since we weren't that far from our visiting church we decided to give it a try. I was expecting that it would be crowded and we might have to wait awhile. While I was parking I saw some ladies standing outside, but they had finished and were waiting for others to come. Meanwhile the other three members of my family had already made it there and had saved a table. We were given our water beverages and my little cousin ordered a large cranberry juice. While we were talking we noticed that on the tv the 49ers were playing the Chiefs and at the time it was at a low score. The server came to take our orders and everyone ordered something different. I had a taste for a hamburger when I left the church so I ordered a cheeseburger and I had two options either potato chips or the French fries, I opted for the fries even though it was an additional $6.75. I wanted a drink but the sodas started at $5.75 and of course why come for your first visit and don't order a slice of pie which started at $8.75. The burger & fries were great!!! But usually hamburgers come out first but my little cousin who ordered a bacon-cheeseburger and fries ours came out last. One had ordered chicken & waffles, one a catfish dinner and one a chicken dinner. Those dinners took up a whole platter and a saucer for the cornbread. My cheeseburger & fries hit the spot. The French fries were steak fries, and were hot and delicious!!! Everyone had to ask for a to-go box except me, I ate all my food. My cousin said everything tasted good, but the food was served cold and she couldn't enjoy her food. My cousin who had the chicken and waffles suggested we order one & share. I had my mouth watered for the lemon ice-box pie but they didn't have that or just plain cheesecake. So, we were left with trying the sweet potato cheesecake and to my surprise it was very, very good, we all liked it!!! They made good money from our table plus the tip that they had to split. Even though my food & dessert was good I can't say if I would go back. The decor of the place needed to be painted and some big changes made. They can close for one week and do some painting and remodeling. Take all those pictures off the walls and clean and paint . VThe restaurant was nearly packed when we left so they are making money and the pies must be really good because unfortunately for us there were really not much left. I felt like those pies should have been replenished because of the weekend and most people like us go out for Sunday lunch or dinner and would line to eat or take home a pie. One slice of pie was $8.75 and their specialty pies were $10.75. I didn't bother to look at the prices for a whole pie. Make sure you have cash or a cash app, they don't accept credit or debit cards. This is one of my favorite spots in Oakland. I used to go when I lived here, and it never disappointed, so coming back, it was just like I remember. I loved the home feel as soon as I walked in the door. The photos on the wall are inviting, letting me know that others care about Lois' as well. We were welcomed and found our own seats. After looking over the menu, which had so many options, my husband and I (well, really me) finally decided and was sure to order something different so that we could try each other's food. Our breakfast came out quickly and cooked just like we asked. The grits were so creamy with butter, and yes, I added sugar! The eggs were soft and creamy, too. The steak was tender and big. I tasted my husband's salmon croquettes, and I tasted mostly salmon, which was a good thing. The outside was crispy, just enough. I wanted to eat more because everything was so good, but we each ended up taking half our food home. That tells you how much food we were served! We received out to go boxes, paid the bill (cash only), and we were on our way to The City, bellies full and happy. Oh yeah, as we left, we were not only thanked by our server but the chef as well. Do Not go here if you like good food or even pretty food! I looked at the pictures a few times over the past couple of years. Whenever I was trying to find a soul food place. Each time I said "heck no!!!" So Today, my family went here for a birthday and We went here because there were a few of us and we didn't want to wait in line. Now I see why there was no line. But... there were hair clippers on the toilet in the ladies room! What is that about???!? That should've been a sign. The food was not tasty. How does a diner constantly serve fried chicken without skin?!? Maybe the skin came off with the feather(s) because one of us had skin but it came with a feather. I looked through the photos and this has been happening for years. The scrambled eggs were hard. Margarine not butter.... We did not get any pie which is or should be their bread winner. They simply did not look good. The apple pie looks dry and the ice box pies looks like they are melting. The graham cracker crust is very thin and the pastry crust is very "rustic" looking as if they were trying to prove it was homemade. We opted to go elsewhere for dessert- ice cream. LPQ is a local Oakland joint, I say joint because it sounds better than a "hole in the wall" but I mean both in a positive way. It's a small place with a down-home feel. After moving from the East Coast I was afraid I wouldn't find a place like this in the bay area, but I did. The staff has that down-home charm. I usually get a basic Southern breakfast, which includes grits and eggs. The food is very tasty. I love that scene of the families coming here to dine after church on Sundays. We love having brunch on the weekends and last Sunday felt like a chicken and waffle day. So we went to look for a new restaurant that we haven't tried before and found Lois the Pie Queen which isn't a new restaurant since it been around for over half a century. There was a little bit of a wait which was fine because we got to talk to the other patrons who have eaten there for decades and told us with the order. I'm glad that we did talk to people standing in line because the grits were the best thing about the meal. Unfortunately I only got two bites 10 of my meal by the time the restroom door opened and wafted terrible smells from a young woman who walked out. We were seated next to the restroom which wouldn't have been a problem if there wasn't all those extra smells coming out from the last lady. I couldn't finish my food because every time I open my mouth I tasted the smells that we're coming out of the restroom so I quickly packed up my food and decided to eat it at home at a different day when I wasn't thinking about that issue. Today, +2 days later and I decided to heat up the food and eat it as leftovers for lunch. The grits were so good, the pecan waffle was better that the syrups soaked in to the waffle, and the chicken was better in the air fryer with a little more salt and dunked in Frank's red hot sauce. Great southern food spot! My party ordered: coffees, corn beef hash plate, and the fried chicken plate. The portion sizes are HUGE. All the plates came with both homemade biscuits AND a choice of another carb (hash brown, grits, etc.). The coffee seemed like it was watered down, but that's ok. Definitely has a family-fun, local-joint, no-frills feel. Food was delicious. I really wish I can give 4.5 stars, but I have to give 4 stars because this place is cash-only, didn't itemize out the bill, and the online menu on their website didn't match their printed menu. Iconic pie and soul food spot in Oakland! I was in an "I gotta have a slice (or 2) of pie" mood and found myself in Lois the Pie Queen's restaurant ogling the pies in the fridge display. The lady who worked there was super sweet and cheerfully listed all of the pies/cakes that were available. The sweet potato cheesecake ($7.25) and apple pie ($6.75) slices were calling my name loud and clear so I had gotten those. Also, since my future sis-in-law's bday was coming up, I decided to get a whole apple pie ($27) for her and her hubby cuz their anniversary was on Pi day. Total came to $41 and it was perfect because that was the exact amount of cash I had. FYI they are CASH ONLY. The SPC slice was damn good- I could taste the sweet potato bits and the creamy cheesecake and buttery graham cracker crust paired so perfectly together. The Apple pie was yummy too and it got rave reviews from my future in-laws. Recommend plopping a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for that a la mode love. Lois the Pie Queen is a North Oakland institution that offers great diner classics with some Southern charm! I've known about this place for many years, and yet never tried their food or pies. This Christmas presented an opportunity to buy a Pecan pie to go with our brunch menu. Wow, all we can say is wow!! You will be in heaven if you're a fan of pecan pie! This is for sure the best pecan pie I've ever had, and it was the subtle details that made this pie so delicious. The crust top has the texture of a crunchy shortbread cookie, and the lack of butter contrasts well the moist pecan filling at the bottom of the pie crust. The filling is not too sweet, and the pecans on top taste fresh to really compliment the rich taste in general. It is so good with a cup of coffee.
