I lived next doors to the park on Dabney Street for many years and made full use of the park for my personal use and the company I worked for held their annual alumni picnic there. I also exercised my horse in the arena. I remember riding horses through the park before it was a park, only a bunch of dirt and vegetation. Great little park at the foot of the Angeles National Forest. I really didn't want to review it because I don't want crowds, but that's unfair to such a great park. I stumbled upon an After Dark event tonight and the band is killing it! It's a shame the people here aren't clapping after any of the songs. I really want to yell out loud to this large crowd to clap like it's their kid at a recital!!! Geez . That bass man is on ! I digress, this is also one of the places you can catch the beginning of one of the many beautiful trails in the nearby forest. Please pack out what you bring in. read more

Review for the pool: this place made you feel very uncomfortable for having chosen to be here. I was barked at for "not showering" - I had, literally had to show my arm was still wet, and boyfriend was barked at for wearing his shirt in the pool area when he was just intending to go to the car. Wound up walking to the car with no shirt. You are not allowed to have shoes, clothes, books, even towels on the pool deck, which seems like more of a safety hazard from slipping with wet feet while walking back inside to your locked belongings than just having a towel available. Very weird, strict, unwelcome vibe. We will not return. 2 stars because the park looked beautiful and so did the pool. I didn't go in after 1 of 3 lifeguards (for about 10 people) yelled at me when I went to get in around the 5ft mark in the pool because I hadn't taken a test. read more

**This is a review for the Pooch in the Pool event.** Once a year, the Loma Alta Park pool open the doors for our beloved furry babies. This usually happens before the facility empties and refills the pool for the year. This year, it happened on August 30th. For many dogs and their hoomans, this is the BEST DAY EVER! Little dogs usually have an hour to play in the pool. Then the big dogs take their turn. This was the first time we went for this event, and Pony the dog had an absolute blast along with a bunch of her dog bffs! The dogs butt-sniffed, jumped in the pool, and chased floaty toys. It was a PAAARRTAY! The park staff was so accommodating, and helped fetch out-of-reach toys with nets. Proof of vaccination and waiver were required. I wish this happens more often, but we'll take what we can get. Thanks Parks and Recreation for hosting such a fun event! 'Til next year! read more

What a beautiful place. Lots of space, shade, paved paths in between the sights and sites and even a circular paved picnic area. There's a horse range nearby and even tennis courts. Parking was super easy, although it's such a pretty place, I would imagine it gets very popular especially on the weekends. And it was so peaceful, one kid - I'm not making this up - met a lizard, who happily sat on the kid's hand and even stayed on his t-shirt throughout the afternoon. Truly a magical place. Great park for kids. There is ample parking as well. There are two playgrounds. One for younger kids and one for older kids in very close proximity in case you have kids in different age groups you can keep an eye on both. There is a small pergola that can be reserved for private parties. There aren't many tables though so it would be for smaller parties. If you walk down the stairs there is a huge field to run and play in. This park is well maintained. There are other facilities as well like a pool/basketball courts but I haven't utilized the facilities yet. This is definitely the park to come to as kids have endless opportunities. They can run in the field playing catch, soccer, baseball, play tag, play in the playground, ride scooters, etc. read more

My twins were enrolled for spring camp for one week. Never been here before even though we live very close by. The rate was incredibly affordable and the whole staff was very organized and professional. They know what they are doing. That is the most important matter to me to leave my two youngsters almost whole day there. so, I can have peace in mind at work. Oh, kids had amazing time there. Facility is pretty new and clean and near forwards to mountain residential area where has minimum traffic. We will absolutely look into summer camp program and other events to come back. read more

Loma Alta's Aftercare Program is exceptional. It's run by a woman who has committed much of her life to directing the programming and her efforts do not go unnoticed. Many of the instructors utilized the rec center as a youth so there is a strong sense of family and ownership amongst the staff. The rates are extremely affordable, the facilities are in great shape and the programming is engaging. My kids are never waiting for me or checking the clocks. The star rating is for the pool only. The rest of the park is great and definitely four star-worthy - the community gardens, the Wednesday farmer's market, the equestrian area, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, age-appropriate play areas, picnic areas and community events ranging from Zumba to Juneteenth celebrations make this park as a whole a tremendous addition to the Altadena community. It's really a great park. The pool, on the other hand, is a tribute to the worst that county government has to offer. Pool Pros: It's clean, good-sized and offers activities like swim team and synchronized swimming for youngsters. And it's free. Honestly, the fact that it's fee (and less than a block from my house) outweigh pretty much everything else I ahve to say. But still, I have to say it. You have a right to know. Pool cons: The insane rules. It's as if every time someone filed a complaint with the Los Angeles County Parks Department, they added a new rule to address that one complaint. Now to just use the pool you have to be fluent in a labyrinthine network of nonsensical, and even unhealthy, protocols enforced by teenagers. You can't bring anything into the pool except yourself, your swimsuit and your towel. I had pictured a nice, leisurely afternoon by the pool, reading my magazine, working my crossword puzzle, reapplying sunscreen as necessary, staying hydrated, admiring my pedicure with my cute sandals on. And that was all nixed. No books, no drinks, no reading material (I argued with the person who appeared to have the most park seniority over my magazines and managed to get them in), no pen, NO SUNSCREEN OR SANDALS. Okay, I get why having extraneous doodads crowding the pool area could pose a safety issue (sort of?) or entice thieves (New Yorker-reading thieves?) but the no sunscreen thing was baffling. And unhealthy. This is Southern California, where skin cancer is a serious health problem. And you are expected to slather it on outside the pool area and check it in a bag, no option to reapply after swimming. The proffered reason for this rule is that it spills and gets all messy, which, okay, but for some reason stick sunscreen and lip balm also isn't allowed in. The no sandals thing is plain gross. Everyone has to take a shower before they get in (good rule), but we can't wear sandals in the community showers. Basically, they are courting community-wide fungal infections. When you get in, you will learn that in order to swim in the deep end or use the diving board, you have to pass a swim test. Okay, fine -- except you have to do this every time you come. I get it, safety, but every single time? No list of people who've passed? If you like getting chastised by teenagers on their summer breaks, I suggest swimming in the proximity of the diving board when no one is actually using the diving board. That was fun. Finally, and this is my biggest gripe, is that you don't get in at all if you aren't wearing a swimsuit. This means that parents who came with their kids but just wanted to sit on the deck don't come in at all, and they stand outside the pool area watching their kids through the iron gates. This is such an unnecessarily demeaning way to treat people, and I can think of no possible safety concern that is more important than allowing a parent to be present when their child is swimming. Also, no shirt colors other than white (thanks for assuming we're all gang members, LA County!) and if your dark colored sports bra shows under your white shirt, you will be turned away (not for the fashion faux pas, but because of the nonsensical rules). We saw one woman fall prey to that particular insane rule -- no dark sports bras under a white t-shirt -- and she left in a huff. The staff of teenagers laughed at her as she left. Classy, kids. The teens also assured me that the rules are the same across all the other county parks. I don't think this is accurate. I haven't been to every other park and I'm not totally sure which pools are city-owned versus county-owned, but I know for sure that the public pool in Sherman Oaks lets you bring in sandals and suncreen, as does the enormous pool at Hansen Dam. Finally, these rules aren't posted on the LA County Parks department website so you have no idea until you get there. Bureaucracy at its finest. read more

When I visit home and see my nephew, I always bring him to this park. This is for the park only and not the facilities. There are two separate playgrounds. One for the older kids and one for the younger kids. The times I have come, it has been off peak times so there are usually no more than 10 kids playing. I also like the big fields and being able to play frisbee as well. This is a nice neighbor hood park to visit. Another thing I like is a few times I have gone, the sheriff are having lunch and they are always friendly. read more

I had to write a review for the pool because I was hesitant to come to this community pool based on previous reviews. In particular I read a review that gave incorrect information regarding what you can bring to the pool. To verify give them a call. They are closing soon because the pool is only seasonal. However I was able to bring in my water bottle. I was even able to bring my water bottle to side of pool as I was swimming. You can bring flip flops and you can also shower with your flip flops on. I was also able to bring my hand paddles to the pool and use my hand paddles as I was swimming. I asked before going. If you have questions just give them a ring and ask. You might also be able to bring other swimming accessories such as fins and kick boards ect. Of course you would have to ask because I am not sure what the rule is on that. It is true that you're not able to bring sunscreen outdoors you would have to put on before entering common areas and you are not allowed to bring in bags or reading material. It is a bit strict but they have their rules in place for a reason. I have been to other public community pools. In particular there is a community pool in Glendale, Ca on Pacific Blvd that opened up I believe 7 years ago. That pool is the most disgusting pool I have every been to. You can bring what ever you want. Food included. There were floating straws from capresun drinks food floating in the pool very cluttered hair everywhere over chlorinated yikes a nightmare. At the Glassell Pool Park on Los Feliz Blvd which is outdoors and has been around forever has NO hot water and you have to ask for toilet paper every single time you need to use the restroom which = urine in pool for sure! I was thrilled that Loma Alta Park does not allow food in pool area!!!! Trust me it is a blessing! THE MOST CLEAN POOL I HAVE EVER BEEN TOO!!!! I didn't see one leaf in that pool! VERY IMPRESSIVE! Perfectly chlorinated not too heavy with Chlorine Just right. It is also so nice and refreshing to find that the staff are super friendly and polite. From I can tell the kids love the life guards. Also it's good to get discipline and demand respect for lifeguards and rules and respecting elders for kids. I do want to ding a star because some of the rules which I don't know all of them are a bit intense. Lifeguards who are just doing their jobs, so I do think the rules should be dialed back a little in regards to having fun for the kids. I observed one mother who I believe was throwing her about 1 year old child in the air and dipping her in the pool while the father was watching and a life guard intervened and said that's not allowed. Then I also saw a life guard intervene 2 kids who were kicking and splashing and a life guard intervened and said guys be careful you're splashing other people near by. I'm like it's a pool and people can stick up for themselves or ask for help if it's bothering them. I saw the lifeguard do that twice. In a way I felt like geeze the kids are just trying to have fun they should be able to splash as much as they want in the pool. It might have just been that one lifeguard who was a little intense. This is a fun park with playing fields, and two playgrounds, one for kids up to 5, and one for the older kids. It is nice, and keeps the little guys from getting clobbered by the older kids. Also, the pool is free to all and open 7 days a week during the summer! The pool is small and always crowded, but a good place to cool down on a hot day. read more

This star Rating is for the Pool only. Loma Alta Pool is a safe, clean environment, that is staffed by highly knowledgeable individuals who effectively manage the pool in a professional manner. I have been a resident of Altadena for forty years and have enjoyed Loma Alta Pool for decades. There are many aspects of this pool that my family and I enjoy but the best thing is the cost. FREE! From 12:30 to 5:00 everyday recreational swim is free, even on holidays! They also offer free swim team, water polo, synchronized swimming, and even dive team. These services cost hundreds of dollars at other local pools (i.e. the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center). If your interested in some swim time away from the kids, they offer lap swimming Mon.-Fri. 6-8pm for only $7/week, well worth the $1.40 a day vs. $10/day at the Rose Bowl. Swim lessons for kids are also a deal at $20 for two weeks ($2/lesson!). The cleanliness of the water is another feature I enjoy. The staff is adamant about patrons not swimming in their underwear. Everyone who enters the facility must wear a bathing suit. I saw a woman attempt to swim in a colored sports bra beneath a white T-shirt. I think it's absolutely DISGUSTING that people attempt to wash their underwear (i.e. bras and panties) in the local swimming pool. Sports bras are designed to absorb sweat during exercise, I'm so glad the professional staff do not allow women to rinse out their sweaty sports bras in water my children swim in. Loma Alta Pool has several other rules designed to keep the public safe and healthy. If skin cancer is a concern, all sunscreen manufacturers recommend applying it prior to sun exposure and reapplying after swimming. Loma Alta staff informed me that they don't allow sunscreen on the deck because irresponsible patrons in the past have spilled it which makes the deck slippery and dirty. But I was more than welcome to apply it in the locker room (before sun exposure) and return to the locker room (a 10ft walk) to reapply after my swim (common sense). The knowledgeable and professional staff has made swimming at Loma Alta Pool a pleasure for decades. read more

Great park for kids nice gym ect. The staff is great. They know all of the regular kids and they know the families.

The structure of the park definitely gets a 5. This review focuses on the services and the users of the park. The park has great facilities. But who can use them? It seems to me that is geared towards a very limited group that knows exactly what is going on but the larger community cannot find its way over there. When can you use the basketball field? Which activities are going on? There is no decent blackboard or no decent explanation when you ask someone behind the desk. Plenty of good intentions though? Why don't they try to engage the Altadena community more? On top of it, this: since a while Aveson schools uses the fields. This really interrupts the regular usage of the park. Group after group arrives over there and takes over the field. We were using it and although we were never chased away, we had no other option to move. I think it is inappropriate. read more

We love to visit the playground. They are really nice playgrounds -- one for older kids and one for younger kids. There's also a nice shaded picnic area. Typically I'd give this a 4* because although it's a really nice park, there's nothing out of the ordinary. But, with so many low stars, I feel like I needed to bump it to a five, since many of them are about the pool, not the park. read more
