This park is an incredible birding hotspot and a true sanctuary for nature lovers. The semi-wild landscape, filled with native oak trees and hardy scrub, provides a diverse habitat that attracts birds of all sorts--especially in the early morning. It's a great spot to see a variety of species of birds against the beautiful backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. The park is peaceful and well-maintained. Whether you're a serious birder or just looking for a tranquil place to hike and enjoy the local wildlife, this park is a local gem that shouldn't be missed! For a stunning easy hike with beautiful scenics of the local San Gabriel mountains and canyons plus NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory ask no more than Hahamongna watershed....also known as Oak Grove Park. Theres plenty of native plants and animals and the further nirth you hike the better it gets with a few picnic tables about a mile up and even campgrounds beyond that. It's a ripatian habitat so as you meander along the trail, toad or streamside you'll get a serene feeling as to how this place looked and felt for thousands of years by the areas local indigenous tribe,,,,the Kizh. You can park at the north end of Windsor Ave for easy access to a bike trail and walking trail or near the west end if Altadena Dr...where the Altadena Trailhead begins. We brought the pooch here on Sunday afternoon. Even though the lower parking lot was full for a special event, we easily found parking right off the street. Plenty of tables and benches and a couple of restrooms that I didn't check out. It would be a great place for a large group of people. There's a frisbee golf area that seems to cover a large area - so watch out for that. Also there's an actual hiking trail at the back. Everyone was polite and would come back again, but not on a hot day. read more

The park is across the street from La Cañada High School. I visited this park for a survival skills class. We met by the restrooms and learned how to make a net, how to make rope out of yucca leaves from the local yucca plants and then we picked up a nopal and cut it up and cooked it and ate it at the park. We also did a nature walk and learned about the willow tree bark for headaches, toyon berry's for consuming, etc. So, there's no shortage of survival skill material out here. I will say, it's a popular area for frisbee golf. I've never seen so many people golfing with frisbees and being so ecstatic about it, like football game level grunting and yelling. The survival class is held by Christopher Nyerges and is VERY informative and helpful and I highly recommend it. We were at the park for about 5 hours learning about survival and had a great time. read more

I was super impressed by the clean bathroom!! There was even nice toilet paper and soap. It was great for a park bathroom! My husband took me here and this place was really nice. They have frisbee goalees (not sure the name of it), lots of unique ground squirrels, and lizards crawling everywhere and on the trees! The hiking path is nice and leads to a great view of JPL and a small lake (from the recent rains)! There are nice bridges and a dam. We had a good time reading under the trees in the shade. read more

Enjoyed the walk around Devils Gate Reservoir. Started at the main park entrance on Foothill Blvd and then just followed the trail south around the reservoir. You may see some horses. When we got to the north end we entered the path that said Do Not Enter; you can go around the gate and there are others going this way. You'll come to a stream and cross over to get to the other side. Then found our way back to parking lot. Come before sunset so you don't step on the horse poop. If you have extra time head over to the nursery and buy some plants. read more

Disc Golf beckons us. But we're not the first ones here...not by a long shot. A family of coyotes wail and whoop off in the distant preserve. Birds of all sorts chirp with morning delight amongst the hardy scrub oaks. A couple saunters by on horseback. A couple of disc golfers tidy up their putts @ Hole #2. Hahamonga is a real life poem-in-motion celebrating the joys of the great outdoors here in LA County. It is a beautifully maintained space that welcomes families of all ages. Offering spectacular views of the San Gabriels - overlooking JPL/NASA and The Rose Bowl. You can "get lost" here (in the good way) - just for a minute - and leave the bustle of the city behind ya'. As a Soçal Disc Golfer, when I tee off on hole one, I know I am teeing off on one of the planet's first active disc golf courses. History lives on here at world famous Oak Grove. A few years back, I attended high school just up the street from Hahamonga Watershed Park. Back then, we just called it Oak Grove, and the moniker was aptly applied; the park is not a manicured collection of grassy athletic fields, tennis courts, or swing sets like other parks in the area. Instead, HWP is a vast semi-wild area of low rolling hills, stands of oak trees, and native plants just above Devil's Gate dam. Parking is free and fairly easy at all but the busiest weekend times. The park is also the location of the world's first permanent disc golf course, and many people come here simply to play the sport. Others visit the park for picnics, running/walking/dog-walking on numerous paths amidst the trees, or using the park as a starting point for a hike up the Arroyo towards the Gabrielino trailhead. An equestrian center in the park speaks to the wild nature of the area, and all of this is set against the backdrop of JPL just to the northwest of the park proper. I've enjoyed a few half-marathons that included part of the route through Hahamonga, and our track coach used to bring us here to trail run. These days, I do t come here as often as I did 25 years ago, but it's still a nice place to enjoy a little pseudo-nature or chill out. Due to its proximity to the mountains, it is not u common to see lizards, snakes, birds, rabbits, and even a few large critters like coyotes, bobcats, and deer in the early morning or late afternoon. There is also a solid population of California Quail here... so if you've never seen our state bird IRL... this may be your best shot locally. Remember to clean up after your pets, and watch your step-- always a few careless folks who don't remove their canine landmines, and in the warmer months, there's always a chance of finding a big lazy rattlesnake laying quietly in the dappled sunshine beneath the oak trees. read more

Beautiful park with a natural aesthetic and not overly manicured. Restrooms are available and clean. There are even a few grills if you want to make lunch over a fire. There is ample parking, but it fills up quickly, so you may want to get to the park early. Inspite of the many parked cars, the site does not feel congested. read more

This would be a nice park except for aggressive and careless disc golf players. The baskets and throwing areas are not well marked. Easy to get in the way and get hit by a disc. This sport seems to attract unfit, drunk, high gen x and millenial white men who are rude and entitled. The park would be better without them. read more

This is a cute park with a fun frisbee golf course. A frisbee gold vendor is available for you to purchase frisbees if you don't have one. They run about $20 each but he has a good variety. The part itself is a bit rustic with lots of gorgeous trees. It's a bit hard to navigate the course though since there aren't very many signs or markers on how to start the course or the numbers your play. It's a bit confusing and we had to ask a few veterans a couple of times. But, playing frisbee golf was super fun. Until I lost my frisbee in a tree! Hahah. read more

It's not one of my favorite parks but it's very useful for the Girl Scouts. Every summer, the Girl Scouts use the park for a week. They explore, play water games, and cook. There are several tables and benches. There is some parking near the tables, but it's very dusty. When you drive to that area, the dust really flies! Some areas have grass. Good area to walk your dog, but please pick up after your dog. It smelled pretty bad near one of the tables. I would hate to sit there! read more

This short review is for the disc golf course. We stopped by Saturday afternoon to explore and throw a few Frisbees. This was a first for my son and I but lucky for us we were with a seasoned vet ;) My son absolutely loved it! Definitely seems like a guys pastime as there were certainly more men on the course than women but this can be a fun date spot and pastime for you outdoor lovers. Sure, it won't take bocce balls place in my heart but fun can be had once I practice a bit more. It was a very spontaneous visit and we weren't exactly in proper footwear - flip flops! I'll be back in tennis shoes, with a good supply of water and a small snack for a warm afternoon to practice. May be more enjoyable in the cooler months. read more

I had to write a little update concerning the Park Rangers I thought I saw. Yesterday I walked up to a big group in their green uniforms and they told me they were Animal Control and not Park Rangers. I didn't want to give anyone a false sense of security. The Animal Control officers said that rattlesnakes were spotted near the restroom. Be really careful. read more

There are multiple trails that can be taken, all starting from this spacious park. The area is heavily wooded, green, and serene. There are many parking spaces available and bathrooms are located a bit of a walk away. To get the the dam/waterfall, it is about a 10 mile roundtrip. There are multiple water crossings but very little elevation, so the trail is good for hiking or running. parking - free lot read more

Great place for a bike ride. My daughter and I aren't mountain bikers but we do like to bike on trails and gravel. We have had several memorable afternoons at this park. We always enjoy the tranquil scenery and we are thrilled every time we see a little rabbit scamper across the trail. Once we saw an entire family of California quail: mom, dad, and about eight little babies. read more

I came here for frisbee golf and it was awesome! It was busy that weekend as the huge tournament was the following weekend and people were practicing. It was clean, a good view, and lotsa parking. The courses were hard, but not too hard for a beginner like me. The challenge level was just right. Everyone playing is very friendly and nice. Some people brought their pets, kids, or babies in athletic strollers. I would definitely come here again for frisbee golf. read more

There are typically no other people when I go which is nice, I love having space to myself to explore with my dog. Hahamongna Park is a great area for practicing fundamental MTB skills and biking around, it also offers a place for frisbee golfers, a grass field for dogs, and multiple trails for horseback riders. All in all it is a great park to visit. read more

My son and I went walking at Hahamonga Watershed Park the other day. We entered the park on the Oak Grove side and were making our way over the bridge when a very self absorbed grown ass man on a mountain bike rode up next to my son and I and demanded that we get off the sidewalk so that he and his Napoleon Dynamite friend could do "sweets jumps" off the sidewalk. I was very caught off guard and surprised that he would make such a demand as there was plenty of sidewalk to share. We were simply making our way over the bridge and would have been out of his way in just 2 minutes. This park is a public space for everyone to use, not just for him and his friend to do bike jumps off the sidewalk. read more

I love this park! It's so big and beautiful. I actually found it on accident hiking north of the rose bowl I took a trail that went high to a bridge, went over the bridge, walked down the path of beautiful oak trees -- until finally I stumbled across this beautiful green park! They also have frisbee disc golf or whatever it is called that can be annoying if you sit too close to that, but if you sit far enough away you can have a picnic or kick a soccer ball it's a lot of fun. It seems like this park is underutilized. It is not a well-manicured park with lawns and playgrounds and a fenced dog park. Instead it's wild and has mostly native plants. There is work being done to improve the plantings and trails and local residents should be taking their children for walks in the park and walking their dogs on the trails. There is a rather rustic frisbee course and at least one ball field. Pretty soon the tons of silt will be removed so the dam will make local communities safe from flooding once again. (This is a controversial move, but it's a necessity one.) read more

Amazing Park The Rose Bowl Half Marathon route came through the Hahamongna Park on Sunday, January 22, and it was amazing to run through the park. There were so many beautiful parts, but as it was a race, I ran right through the trails. I will definitley be back, and it's easy to get to if you park at the Rose Bowl and walk, run, hike, jog up the trail, go up the hill and under the tunnel of the 210, and VIOLA! Dear God, if it was legal to marry two people, Michael S. and Wendy T. would totally be on my short list. They invited me out bike riding last night, though I am old and slow and uncoordinated and hadn't ridden a bike in at least a year. (But apparently, it really is as easy as 'riding a bike' because I remembered how to do it and didn't fall down once.) I met them at their house, where they put air in my flat tires, loaded our bikes into Michael's truck, and drove up to this lovely park near JPL. It gets one star just for the awesome name: Hahamongna! They led me around the park on a winding trail that changes from pavement to dirt and back a couple of times. On the first dirt portion, Michael pointed out a beautiful coyote watching us. How cool is that! Later on, Wendy was first to spot a crane. I was really excited to see the wildlife, while also really terrified of being eaten by a mountain lion. (Especially because I was the only one of us not wearing a helmet - I figured my head looked like a tasty easy-access snack.) It was incredibly peaceful and pretty up there and Michael and Wendy were so patient with me; I had the best time! Still, my ass really hurts today from that stupid bike seat. Minus one star for that. read more

Great walk past JPL and the restored river bed up the canyon. There have been Winter/ spring river warnings and part of the upper trail was closed due to the Station fires. We saw that Pasadena Public Works has been working on sections trying to make upper parts of the canyon safe for hikers and cyclists, but until the construction s done you might have to forgo going to the upper parts of the trail. This is a great walk for your four-footed friend- but please pack a leash, as some dogs are not as friendly as others and no one wants their excited dog to take down a toddler. The lower part of the trail is an old road which makes great biking for children since there is no vehicle traffic. And yes, my fellow Slug alumni (UCSC) there is THAT frisbee golf course as well. Writing this from the point of view of a soccer player. The games we have that are held here are not something to look forward to. So many holes in the grass, it's a definite recipe for all kinds of injuries and unpredictable ball direction and speed changes. It is at least a pretty large space, enough for two simultaneous 7-v-7 games. The parking is also incredibly limited, but at least u can park in the dirt overflow parking area. The map here shows the park as being somewhere totally off. Entrance is on Foothill and Oak Grove, but by Montrose. Your better off googling La Cañada High School, as it's right across the street. Upon entering the park, u drive down a sorta windy road until u get to the park area. There is often ultimate frisbee players there. Not a shabby park, but not the best place if u are looking to play games on a flat grass field. read more

The location of this park does begin at Foothill Blvd. & Oak Grove, but you have to make a couple of turns and along a narrow trail to get into the park. There is a picnic area with grill - great for summer BBQs, as well as a partially covered trail. I appreciate that they have doggy bags along the trail, so no excuses for not picking up after your pooch! :) They also have a dog/human water fountain, so very convenient! read more

A few friends and I were itching to blast a few discs off one Saturday afternoon and this park definitely fit the bill. The park is interesting enough and provides enough challenges to keep things fun and fresh but not overwhelming. Round some buddies up, grab a disc from the liquor store right down the street, and let the good times fly (no pun intended) read more

I was looking for Gabrielino Trail and took the wrong way. Instead of going straight, I went down a rocky trail (if you're new, wear leggings or pants, especially if you are clumsy) and wondered why the area looked different than the pictures posted by the Yelp community. As soon as I found a posting about Devil's Gate Dam I realized that I took the wrong way. If you want an introduction to hiking I recommend this route. There is a paved road and plenty of soft ground, which is good for your knees. The area is good for horseback riding, cycling and trail running. Got dogs? They can walk here but some people don't pick up after their dogs. Watch out for horse bombs; I had a horse fart on me and it was not pleasant. If you are an experienced hiker, you're not going to get a tough workout. Bring insect repellent. The parking isn't great and some people find creative ways to park (shhh). There are plans to construct a gas pipeline through JPL and the park; this makes me think. But if you're not planning to walk through craggy areas and/or looking for an alternative to Eaton Canyon then walk here. If you're used to trails like Descanso Trail or La Tuna Canyon then you're not getting a huge cardio workout. read more

Hahamonga Watershed Park is a great mulit-service park. It has the low level park activities like play fields and picnic tables, all under the shade of a beautiful oak grove. Then there are the trails, which serve horses, bikes, and people. The trails are wide enough so that these populations never have to feel crowded by eachother, which is great, because I often find this a problem on multi-use trails. There are lots of frogs this time of year, which is a nice thing to take kids to see, and most of the river-adjacent trails have planks or trees for river crossing, so you can get very far along the trail without needing water shoes. Even if you are doing trails, there are always alternate routes you can take which makes it all the more interesting. Hahamonga is a very special place that I highly recommend for its extensive variety of activities! Oh, and the disc golf course is supposed to be one of the best in the nation and the first ever. So if you like disc golf, you should definitely check this place out. Beware a few things: dogs off leashes are ubiquitous. Also, there is a long walk until you get to anything good- for the real treats of this trail, you have to hike quite a ways up the trail. The early trial is dotted with annoying man-made detention ponds, channeling, and dams, but if you are patient, things get very beautiful at around the hour and a half marker. The upper trail has just reopened after the station fire, and it is a sight to see :) read more

I actually hosted a trail ride here on my Birthday with the group I belong to. We had 28 horse/riders attend. I got there early and found the main gate to the parking for horse trailers and trucks was locked. I had made several calls over 2 weeks to contact someone about that gate. We had done a pre-ride 2 weeks before and it had been locked so we got lucky to find the park maintenance guy driving around at that time. Calling the City of Pasadena was a nightmare. When I finally was able to talk to a live person who knew what I was talking about I was assured that gate was always opened. So you could imagine my horror when I arrived with 3 horse and trailers behind me to a locked gate. I ran around asking anyone I could about park maintenance. The other hikers, Frisbee players etc were so helpful and told me we should see someone soon. Finally someone did show up and he was not without a little attitude. But finally the gate was opened and all my riders with horses in tow were able to get in. It really is a nice place. My husband, daughter and I went back the week after the pre-ride to do our own trail maintenance. It seems like there are rarely horses at the park. Just about every hiker or cyclist was surprised to see all 28 of us. But for the most part it was harmony within the park community. The cyclist knew when to slow down or stop and hikers were all kind. We rode the Arroyo Seco trail and it was a beautiful trail with lots of shade and water crossings. The perfect place if you want to get your horse use to the busyness of a park. They also have a huge camping area with lots of tie rails for the horses. We stopped and had lunch there. The trail trail is one way in, to the waterfall, and one way out. If you like to trailer out once in a while you've got to do this one at least once. Take a lunch and expect a good 5 hour ride (including a lunch break). Would I go back? Probably not. But never say never. read more
