Loncheria El Popo a restaurant my family have been enjoying since the 60's. With the inflation our country is facing right now it's very hard to justify the price of $3.35 per lonche. I wish the place would offer other items like fries. The Padrino #1 on park has a combo that includes 2 lonches, 1 order of fries and 1 can sofas for $7.99. This is one of our stops when visiting Laredo. The menu is very small but you shouldn't need anything else. They make lonches de ternera, hamburguesa, weenies, and jamon. We all ordered the lonches de ternera which is shredded beef. The sandwiches are relatively small so you may want to start with two. The sandwich has lettuce and tomato, but you definitely want to add some mustard to bring it all together. They serve pickled serrano peppers which are great. I typically don't like spicy foods but these peppers are not too bad. Lays potato chips are a must have with this as well. Then you wash it all down with a cold Mexican coke! read more

OMG Best Mexican burger ever!! I'm a real burger person and let me tell you this simple local restaurant is small but sooooo delicious! Absolutely recommend this place to anyone that enjoys a good burger, they have few items on the menu but honestly once you have the burger you'll see why, it's so classic and simple that you can't beat it. If you are not familiar with the traditional Mexican lonche de ternera then you may not know what to expect. It is a small burger type sandwich. The bread is not your usual burger bun but instead a "margarita bun". The protein part is cooked shredded beef that is then pan fried on a griddle. Simple toppings of lettuce, tomato and o job and a bit of mustard. This place started in Nuevo Laredo over 60 years ago and except for the bread (can't find the same bread on this side of the border) their flavor is still just as yummy! They also have hand pressed burgers that are griddled crispy on the outside and have a great flavor. They have a "lonche de wines" which unfortunately might read wine in English but translates to weenies and a lonche de jamón or ham as we know it. They serve everything with pickled Serrano peppers and the only side offered is lays potato chips. That said... don't come here for a three course dinner! Unless you eat three "lonches" like most people who order! This is one of my favorite "go to" places for a yummy quick meal. read more

El Popo's theme really seems to be "simplicity". It can be seen from the decor to the burger ingredients to the side dish(es). Our favorites were the ternera and hamburguesa. All burgers have lettuce, tomato and mustard. First off, we ordered all burgers at once and the ternera came out with hardly any meat in it. We ordered another and this one came out hearty and hot. The hamburguesa had a nice sear which gave it a delicious crunch. The wines wasn't that great, simply being sliced hot dog wieners on a bun. For the jamon burger, it was a really odd rectangle shape of ham that resembled spam and was too salty for our taste. The only side dishes offered were Lay's chips and serrano peppers. As for the bread quality, it has noticeably declined over time. Overall this place is great for a cheap snack or quick lunch. read more

Flavor is really good, almost as good as the original in nuevo laredo. You really have to work on the bread consistency, sometimes is good, sometimes is really thick and pasty, which ruins the sandwich. Loncheria El Popo is Laredo's version of a White Castle. They serve up small sandwiches (they're a little too big to be called "sliders" but small enough to not be a full on hamburger) with your choice of ground beef (hamburguesa), shredded beef (ternera), hot dog (wines), or ham (jamón). The meat is cooked to perfection every time and is served on a bun that is just slightly toasted and buttered and is complimented with crisp shredded lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and savory onion. Hell, you can even add avocado to the sandwich if you so wish to do so. I've never had a bad experience. The service is quick, the food is great, and the price is too good. If you're on a budget and you want to munch out or if you're in a hurry and need to take it to go. This is definitely a place to check out. One thing worth mentioning, however, is that they don't serve fries. In the 62 years that this business has been around, I don't think they've ever served a French fry. So if you're looking for spuds, you're going to be disappointed. They do have a great selection of potato chips though and they have pickled peppers that go great with the sandwich if you're looking for some spice! This tiny ternera sandwiches are to die for. I don't know of anybody that can stop at just one. The secret to a great sandwich is, besides what goes inside, is always the bread. This round bread is fresh, fluffy and toasted to perfection, then filled with chopped ternera meat decorated with guacamole and mustard. I usually reserve 4 star ratings for restaurants that offer complex flavors and sophisticated cuisine but in all of its simplicity this place is delicious and a 3 star rating would not do it justice. Lonches (Mexican style sandwich) served with fried shredded beef, tomato, lettuce, mustard, and onion. As simple as it sounds it is delicious. The cheeseburgers are really delicious as well, the patty is well caramelized and crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, full of flavor. The pickled carrots and Serrano peppers are delicious and are a perfect match with the lonches. The menu is very small but everything in that restaurant is tasty and delicious. This restaurant was originally opened in Nuevo Laredo Mexico having a very large American clientele, they opened up a location in Laredo. Highly recommend this. 85/100 read more

Been eating here for a couple years now. Food is awesome! Cooked to order and tastes authentic! My favorite part is their wide variety of sodas especially Mexican Coca Cola! Often busy after school hours as they cater to children's birthday parties, but for lunch it's mostly business people. Would definitely recommend and will return! Also prices are very reasonable. Only downfall is menu is in Spanish but living in Laredo for so long has helped with knowing what I'm ordering. Overall awesome place!
