Loon Mountain is a large New England resort with amazing comfort establishments, clubs, lodges,…read moremultiple parking areas, etc. However, as comprehensive as its website is, it doesn't take into account someone coming in for the first time, and the sheer size of the establishment is overwhelming, especially considering the resort stretches for three miles. The Octagon Lodge is a prime place for a first-time skier or rider to come in, settle in, change, eat, and begin and end their day. We found the service staff absolutely tops, friendly and knowledgeable. As long as folks come over early, it is an amazing lodge. Smallish by large resort standards, but its coziness lends itself to being optimum. It gets crowded on a weekend, so it pays to come early. With beautiful views of slope-side, it's a great place to eat and people watch The Octagon Lodge as its name implies, is an octagonal shaped building at the eastern end of the main parking lot at Loon Mountain. From the parking lot, a ticket service window lies on the lower floor. Upstairs, one enters an area with a larger guest services room and then a lodge with storage cubicles lining several walls. A huge fireplace is located to one side. The lodge also houses the four-person Mountain Express gondola, with the very genteel touch that one doesn't have to leave the lodge to go into the gondola. The lodge also houses two restaurants and a large upstairs pub, the Bunyan Room. And as well a small ski shop An excellent place to begin the day at Loon Mountain.

On March 11, 2026 when I write this review they had one lift and barely two runs open from the midstation. The slopes that were half open were half covered with snow. This is when all of their competitors had ample snow and had almost all their slopes open (not glades but that's always hit or miss). When we asked for a refund the manager smirked and made comments about their policies and basically blamed us for not reading the report from the day before. So when Cannon gives you dangerous conditions and one twentieth of the area open they say too bad and that's our policy lump it. Incredible. The state of NH that runs this mountain is running it like the Motor Vehicle Registry. This was the second time I was there and absolutely the last. Such a shame. They couldn't even acquire Mittersill correctly. Cannon is the worst ski experience I have had in my life and the people who run it make it even worse and that's difficult to do but they aced it! If I was the NH governor I would fire everyone who was working at Cannon today based on total incompetence.

It's an old school throwback mountain with 1 fast summit lift and a chill vibe. If you like ungroomed natural terrain, tight glades and an old school (non pretentious) vibe, check it out on a pow day. They don't make much snow though as vail has cut back in that department so avoid if it hasn't snowed substantial amounts in a while.

The hostel had availability at a more than fair price and it was simple to make a reservation online. Check in starts at 4pm. My only interaction with a staff person was at that time but they were very friendly and explained where everything was in the house (as it was my first stay). I ended up with the female bunk room to myself. There is also a male bunk room, co-ed room, and plenty of private rooms. Depending on your needs, they're likely to have the accommodations for you. Sheets, blankets, pillows, and lockers with keys are provided. The amenities were a welcome addition to my stay. The full kitchen came in handy when I decided to stay in for dinner. The bathrooms were clean with several stalls and a couple of showers. Plenty of tables and seating downstairs. A back porch to lounge on. Several children were staying in the hostel at the same time that I was and though they were a bit rambunctious during the day, all guests were respectful of quiet hours. I would definitely stay here again. Similar if not cheaper in price than some of the local campgrounds.

The first also…read morein the White Mtns was horrible and dirty so I was nervous to say the least about staying here. Alas, this is a jewel. Very clean. Comprises a fully equipped kitchen big enough for several cooks in the kitchen at the same time. Has a dining room big enough to seat at least 12 if memory serves me which is open to the living area. Has at least 10 bedrooms (I say that because we were in room 10 on the 3rd floor) with linens provided. We had a private room with 2 queen beds and a sink for about 63.00 including tax. There are other rooms available with bunk beds. There are separate gents and ladies bathrooms on the 2nd floor with shower stalls, toilets, and sinks. There is another restroom on the first floor. Towels are provided but bring your own soap and shampoo. Our caretaker is the new owner, as well. She was very inviting and gracious. I'd definitely stay here again. I'd say it's better than a hotel for my needs. I don't mind sharing a bathroom with the offset being I have a kitchen to use. I'd say that's a fair tradeoff when looking for a place to stay while hiking the White Mtns.

We had initially planned on 3 nights…read moreat 3 different huts and just our 1st night at Joe Dodge--but the weather took a shocking and ugly and dangerous turn at our first hut, so we were so happy they modified our reservation and we could finish out our trip there. The food: AMAZING! All you can stuff your face with, mostly healthy, hearty, comforting and DELICIOUSLY made meals. Great bread, salads, pasta, soups for dinner and all the fixings for a FULL breakfast: eggs, bacon, French toast, pretty much anything you want! Staff: Gracious, kind, reassuring. The folks in the gift shop and front desk were WONDERFUL & they KNOW the trails and the mountains & were so patient with us--being new to hiking. Our actual hikes were TOUGH....ass-whipping, really....I almost cried tears of joy just hobbling back to the quiet and warm solitude of the Lodge (the huts are waaay different--not for introverts who crave quiet and aren't "super social".). This was my favorite part of staying at the Lodge; you can tell solo hikers could find others to connect with --if they wished--but you and your honey could ALSO dine in a full room of strangers and still not feel pressured into interacting with others if you didn't want to. Sorry for the rambling review but I can't believe this place doesn't have more recent reviews and I hope it gets all the accolades it deserves!

The price of the lodging is not cheap as you pay per person for a bunk bed set up with shared bathroom, but they offer a lot of services that make up for it including all you can dinner and breakfast buffet as well as the ability to borrow gear for the hike (I borrowed a smaller back pack and trekking poles). The staff is super friendly and informative. They also have a cozy library towards the back of the lodge equipped with a fire place and comfy lounge chairs. Would definitely consider staying here again.
