Joe Dodge Lodge has been the absolute HIGHLIGHT of our trip. We had initially planned on 3 nights at 3 different huts and just our 1st night at Joe Dodge--but the weather took a shocking and ugly and dangerous turn at our first hut, so we were so happy they modified our reservation and we could finish out our trip there. The food: AMAZING! All you can stuff your face with, mostly healthy, hearty, comforting and DELICIOUSLY made meals. Great bread, salads, pasta, soups for dinner and all the fixings for a FULL breakfast: eggs, bacon, French toast, pretty much anything you want! Staff: Gracious, kind, reassuring. The folks in the gift shop and front desk were WONDERFUL & they KNOW the trails and the mountains & were so patient with us--being new to hiking. Our actual hikes were TOUGH....ass-whipping, really....I almost cried tears of joy just hobbling back to the quiet and warm solitude of the Lodge (the huts are waaay different--not for introverts who crave quiet and aren't "super social".). This was my favorite part of staying at the Lodge; you can tell solo hikers could find others to connect with --if they wished--but you and your honey could ALSO dine in a full room of strangers and still not feel pressured into interacting with others if you didn't want to. Sorry for the rambling review but I can't believe this place doesn't have more recent reviews and I hope it gets all the accolades it deserves! read more

Had an awesome experience at the Joe Dodge Lodge this past weekend. This place is conveniently located at the base of mount Washington, making it a prime location to start an epic hike. The price of the lodging is not cheap as you pay per person for a bunk bed set up with shared bathroom, but they offer a lot of services that make up for it including all you can dinner and breakfast buffet as well as the ability to borrow gear for the hike (I borrowed a smaller back pack and trekking poles). The staff is super friendly and informative. They also have a cozy library towards the back of the lodge equipped with a fire place and comfy lounge chairs. Would definitely consider staying here again. read more

Super convenient location to stay at if you're interested in summiting Mt. Washington. The staff is very nice and the wooden building is beautiful and serene. You can purchase a stay that includes a breakfast and dinner as well; which is very convenient after a hike! Why the 3-stars? * No air conditioning. Can get very stuffy. * Our room had a snickers wrapper on the floor and under the bed wasn't vacuumed properly. * You're charged per person. I get demand is high so they command premium prices, but for humble accommodations; it's quite expensive. it It was $403 for two days for my wife and I to stay here (including breakfast and dinner). We were charged an extra $25 per night per person because the only room available they had was a family room with an extra bunk bed made for 4 people. I've never been to a hotel that charges you per person and it's a little strange, rather than paying per room. * The bed was comfortable enough, but the room was so stuffy on the one hot day, even with the windows open that it was tough for me to fall asleep. * Shared bathroom accommodations. The pluses: * Great staff. Enjoyed the breakfast and dinner buffets on the weekend. I thought the choices were delicious. * Community feel. * The location. You can't beat waking up and starting your summit trek without having to drive anywhere. The Joe Dodge Lodge is a great choice for hikers and families. The rooms are fine for a couple, but don't expect great privacy. Get one of the smaller rooms for a more cozy feel, but unfortunately they didn't have one available so we had a larger room with extra bunk beds we had no use for. The breakfast and lunch buffets are delicious on the weekends (your tastes and results may vary) and very convenient before and after long hikes. read more

A group of us stayed here to hike up Mt Washington via the Tuckerman's Ravine trail and down Lions Head which was the route recommended for first timers. The location could not have been better. With the trail being a hop skip and a jump outside the back door of the lodge it's a perfect location. Most of the staff was very helpful providing updates on the weather, recommend trails for Mt. Washington along with things to do in the area. The accommodations were subpar. Several of us stayed in a double (one double bed) and there was barely enough room to take more than a few steps. The Quads (sleeps 4) had much more space and even outlets for everyone! The rooms get very very stuffy and the fan provided in each room doesn't help much. Unfortunately even with quiet hours from 10pm to 6am noise travels quickly especially if you sleep on the first floor. read more

Do not stay here if you want luxury. Do not eat here if you want five-star dining. Do stay here if you love the outdoors and the simplicity of a good, even strenuous hike and accommodation that is practical, affordable, and yes, shared - rooms, showers and family-style dining rooms. Stay here if you love the outdoors and plan on immersing yourself in it. This combination lodge and dining room offers a good night's sleep and three square meals (lunch is a box lunch) for the intrepid hikers who brave the Tuckerman Ravine trail on their way to Mount Washington or other summits in the Presidential range. They are awesome here- friendly ,helpful and knowledgeable. Affordable, clean, great food and super considerate staff. We enjoyed our stay. We hiked nearby, and also went on a guided tour of nearby Mount Washington, which was excellent. All in all very family friendly and great accommodations. The lodge is basically the nicest youth hostel you've ever stayed at. They have a wide variety of rooms for every situation. Private rooms with and without private bathrooms and lots of bunkrooms for the cheapest options. The prices are higher than most hostels but that's because an amazing breakfast and dinner are enclosed (there is no kitchen to make your own food). And because it's run by the nonprofit Appalachian mountain club they have great info on hiking, a nice store with hiking supplies, and even gear you can borrow. It's also not a party spot since they enforce quiet hours which is nice for real outdoors folks who get up early to hike and ski. Though they do have communal areas to meet new friends and offer interesting talks in weekends. read more

Good starting point for Mt Washington area assaults with knowledgable people. However, caters too much to casual visitors. 28 bux for dinner buffet which is selection limited. I was told prices are comparable to town. Yeah, that's a bunch of horse manure. 22 bux for Texas style brisket that's smoked and a 20oz of handcrafted beer. I called out the AMC employee on this and he agreed that's where he goes to eat as well - Moat Mountain! However, if you are looking to stage your trip this is a good place to pick up last minute gear (although a bit more expensive than usual channels), maps, and books. I personally end up buying some AMC books that I cant find easily on Amazon here as well as patches. Yay, got my Tuckerman Ravine patch after skiing down Right Gully / Sluice! read more

Perfect for what it is, a home base for hiking and enjoying the Whites. The rooms do not have private bathrooms but it really isn't a problem. The bathroom is right down the hall, very spacious, modern, and clean. The food is delicious but it would be nice to have more options besides the all you can eat. That is a bit pricey. We will definitely be coming back. read more

Best food at AMC yet! Best set up I've seen, too. There's places to socialize away from the rooms (for those who are sleeping). Trails are right by the lodge and expert advice on them and those nearby. (Example: you need snowshoes--and we totally did!) What type of hike we like, time we have then we have a couple options! Rooms are small, but that's not the point anyway, right? Wish I was a skier so I could hike up Tuckermans and ski down. We will be back for sure! read more

This place was awesome. It is very simple in its layout, with a nice kind of "campus" set up at the Pinkham Notch center. The lodge itself is very well kept, with nice wooden bunk beds and ample shelves and hooks for staging my outdoor gear. The bathrooms are dorm style, and I had no problem taking a nice shower and using the bathroom facilities without it feeling too crowded. It was very clean and the water was hot. The building next to it has a great cafeteria serving meals at times, delicious! There is also a good gift shop with great staff to help with trail and travel. Great place to start and a great place to end! read more

The check in experience at Joe Dodge Lodge was terrible; The person at check-in was grumpy, unwelcoming, not done with ease, and not hospitable. The first person you see to check in for lodging after 4 hours of driving and a full day in the back-country makes the impression for AMC lodging which was terrible. We chose to book lodging with Joe Dodge as we are members, we support AMC; However, this experience shows a complete lack of professionalism in hospitality and lodging. AMC-Joe Dodge needs to hire and train people in hospitality, especially if they want to keep members and hope for referrals and renewals and new members. Check in should be friendly, welcoming, accommodating and know how to do so with ease. Professionalism should be reflected. We hope Joe Dodge lodge invests in improving the staff who are the first to meet and check in guests. We hope AMC begins to show that they value members and guests. Super convenient location to mt. Washington. Accommodation were clean if modest. Recommend larger upstairs room if available. Family style dinner was good and plenty of it. Breakfast was quite good. Lots of families as well as hard core hikers. Very pleasant stay. read more
