Saving animals is not easy for those who volunteer but is worth every minute when they can connect a needy pup with their forever home. Earlier this year we wanted to help out and adopt a pup that needed a home. So we filled out the RHR application and then went through an extensive phone and home video interview and inspection. Everyone involved in the vetting process was very professional. We were impressed at how detailed they were to make sure that if we were approved our home would be safe and welcoming to one of their charges. If every rescue did what RHR does there is no doubt in our minds that every dog placed would end up in great forever homes. Originally, we were interested in a dachshund/poodle mix but had to pass on her because we were not feeling well to bring her home. A few weeks later we went to a RHR foster home to meet a few potential pups. Our original intention was to adopt a similar pup to the one we had to pass on and decided to trial foster a totally different pup who is a chihuahua/rat terrier mix from Korea who was very shy and not very interested in us. From the moment we adopted Ozzy we kept in contact with RHR via multiple texts, photos and videos to keep everyone in the loop as he slowly came out of his shell. It took a few weeks for Ozzy to want to fully explore our home and fenced in yard. Then a few more weeks until he found his voice and proved to us, yes he can bark, especially when we were, in his mind, taking a bit too long to cook his eggs for breakfast. Now a few months later he is part of the family, enjoying playing with his brothers and sisters, keeping up with them and showing that he is truly one of the gang. So if you want to help a pup in need and support the gallant efforts of the RHR organization we would highly recommend that you do so. As a former board member of an Animal Rescue in Massachusetts I can say that this organization truly deserves the support of any animal lover who wants to make a difference by adopting one of their wonderful pups.

My veterinarian advised that spaying her this young was not safe and strongly recommended waiting until she was older. When I brought these concerns to the rescue, I was met with rude, dismissive, and intimidating responses. Rather than having a respectful discussion about my veterinarian's recommendations, I was repeatedly told I would be in breach of contract and would never have licensure of my puppy if I did not follow their timeline. The emails I received were hostile and unprofessional, especially considering I was simply trying to advocate for my puppy's health. I understand rescues have policies, but there should be room for reasonable consideration when a licensed veterinarian raises concerns. The way I was treated left me feeling disrespected and unsupported. I have adopted many puppies and animals from other rescues in the past and have never had an experience remotely close to this. I would encourage anyone considering adopting from this rescue to carefully review their requirements and be aware of how medical concerns and adoption procedures may be handled.

A couple of months later we adopted Shorty a black cat who the people at Kent recommended as a great cat in spite of having one front paw 1/2 'shorter than the other via a birth defect. Shorty is agile smart and bold he can leap 6 to 8 feet. My original review for this business 7 years ago was middle of the road at 3-stars, because while they did keep my dogs alive for a week, they lacked even the most basic customer service skills and were frankly very rude and standoffish, which you can read about in my first review below. After posting my review, the male owner of the business, Smitty, verbally attacked me on Yelp, which he has now edited, and I changed my review to 2-stars (however, you can still get a general gist of what he said in my updated reply to him). Now after being stalked online and having a libelous review posted about my business, I think an update to 1-star is fair. Customer service really doesn't get any worse than what is provided by the owners and associates of Smitty's Kennels. They're not just bad business owners, they're unkind people. Reviews on alternate websites are available with a quick google search of their business name where you can see the owner, Smitty's, interactions with other unhappy customers, or as he and Sandy apparently like to call them publicly for all new customer prospects to see, "Chronic Complainers". Let me start by saying that I NEVER leave reviews, but I feel I have not choice but to share so…read morethat others avoid this issue. We booked our golden doodle for a groom. I gave very specific instructions including a picture of what he should look like. He has a beautiful shiny coat, and we have had him groomed quite frequently over the past 3 years. When I went to pick him up with my mom I knew we were in trouble when my mom let out an audible gasp when she saw him. He literally looked like he had been electrocuted, or like a caricature of what a mutt in an alley would look like. His tail was chopped so short it looked like a rope toy, and there were tufts of uneven fur everywhere. The groomer asked if there was anything she wanted us to "clean up" but there was zero chance she was ever touching my dog again. I left and took him home at which point my wife was near tears upon seeing him. I called and asked for a manager, and got a call back FROM THE SAME GROOMER. So that was awkward! I explained I needed a manager, and eventually the owner called me back. He was very apologetic and said this had never happened before. He said that he could have another groomer try and "fix it", but only at their Calverton location, which is 45 minutes from my house. He refused to offer any help at the location in Southold. I took him to Calverton today. The groomer there was very professional, but immediately told me that she was not a "miracle worker" and there was only so much she could do to fix this "hatchet job". She also said she had to fix 3-4 dogs from this other groomer just this week! She did a professional job, and did the best she could, but in order to do that, she had to go really short to even out the places where he had basically been shaved down. My dogs hair is now 3x shorter than it ever has been before, to the point where I don't even recognize him. I called the owner back, and explained that I should not have had to pay for this service, as the other groomer admitted it was not a professional job, and that she had cleaned up multiple other dogs done by this first groomer. Additionally, I had to devote three hours of my day to getting this fixed. The owner said the best he could do was a 25% discount off of a future grooming, which I find laughable given this experience. I WOULD RECOMMEND EVERYONE AVOID THIS PLACE FOR GROOMING AT ALL COSTS!!!

We found Dogtown and was very comfortable from the first day we brought Shamrock for daycare. We also boarded him overnight when I had surgery. We bring him at least twice a week and Shamrock loves going, has a wonderful time and comes home happy. We also started using Heather for Grooming. Love his haircuts! Chris and the whole staff are wonderful!
