BEWARE. This place is definitely a puppy mill and I'm not sure how it's legal. I realized after entering and seeing the amount of dogs and how unsanitary it looked. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The lady Helen also immediately upon meeting us declared we would get cancer because we live in a town that has a plume problem and kept referring to us as the cancers, I'm not sure what fifth dimension she lives on but she didn't make much sense the entire time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Luckily I'm fine dealing with unhinged people but being told I'm bound to get cancer because of where I happen to live was top tier sales. This lady wins the award at being rude.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We came here because it was advertised as a local breeder with parents nearby and humane. It was anything but humane. We did see a dog we absolutely loved and at this point just wanted to get it out of this situation. When we asked the price she said $1200 at first, that turned into $2000 and when we called her my husband made the mistake of saying we loved the dog and suddenly price was $3500 and I have worked professionally training breeds - it was not a full breed. We were not willing to pay that much to save the puppy from there and felt conflicted because we didn't want to support an institution that treats dogs this way... It should be shut down. It's disheartening to see puppies in such cramped conditions. We ended up finding a local breeder an hour out that raises them in her home and treats her dogs like royalty. We are also paying way less than what she priced her dogs... We would just adopt if we didn't need an allergen friendly dog. We waited patiently for one to pop up on all the rescue groups with no luck...so please don't come at me (trust me I rather adopt it's cheaper). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Either way, don't support this woman. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Picked up Toby today. I was absolutely exhausted and thought that I needed to rush over and get him. Helen assured me that there was no rush, that they would be there all day. That was so NICE![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Toby was clean and happy to see me! They even gave him a bath! Helen said that she always watches for tail wagging. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Helen and I had a nice conversation. She's really lovely, and truly LOVES dogs. She's very concerned about their health and happiness.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I appreciate the fact that she won't just take any dog for boarding without knowing about vet visits, shots, etc, and prefers dogs that she sold. When I arrived, there were larger dogs playing outside, in a fenced area. Toby was waiting for me with his raincoat, toy, and hoodie all bagged up. Helen showed me the outside play area for small dogs, and told me that Toby had been playing with her Maltese, Sophie. I met Sophie :) Then Helen showed me the puppy room. OMG!!! So many absolutely adorable puppies, including Shih Tzus like Toby! I saw poodle puppies exactly like my brother's family dog. Everything that I saw was very clean, and the dogs and puppies looked healthy and well-cared for. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I read the bad reviews. I like Helen. I think that if she doesn't want someone to have a dog, she has a reason.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My brother's family has had their puppy for about a year now, and he's perfectly healthy. Noisy, but healthy. Helen did advise me about a group of basically criminals (HSUS), which includes people convicted of sexual harassment, embezzling, child sex trafficking, fraud, and racketeering. Interesting. They're supposed to be a humane society. So I wonder if possibly some of these reviews are perhaps not entirely accurate. Went in to find a lab. They showed me two. She told me one was a labradoodle. I took the so called labradoodle because she looked terrible ...her ears were filthy and bitten up by flys ... She was very thin. I bought her cause I couldn't bear the thought of leaving her there. While her paperwork said labradoodle I had a DNA done. She was100% Labrador. My veterinarian treated her for parasites , ointment for her ears, medication for servere diarrhea. Today she is 5years old and has developed arthritis..she is afraid of her own shadow so who knows what she went through at the kennel with the untrained kennel help. I only pray that the Sportsman Kennel gets permanently shut down and those people suffer the consequences they deserve. read more

I decided to stop in Sportsman's Kennel, as I live in Manorville and just hug a few of the puppies. Of course I fell in love with with my little Paddington, a mini golden doodle. I strongly discourage anyone from purchasing a puppy from this location.The puppies are in poor conditions, poorly socialized, and there is little transparency about their parents, health histories, or living conditions. Reputable breeders prioritize the health and well-being of their animals, provide clear documentation, allow you to see where the dogs are raised, and care deeply about where their puppies end up. That was not the case here. Please consider adopting from a shelter or working with a responsible, ethical breeder instead. My poor Chihuahua that was bought here @ Sportsman's kennel, with Helen the manager/owner assisting us almost died from sickness, from an excessive amount of parasites. Parasites can happen with puppies, which is understandable, however, this was NOT the same thing. Their Vet had prescribed several strong medications 1 after another to help, but this poor thing was keeling over constantly. Nothing would help. Took several months to recover and thank God he survived . Even the vet said they (Sportsmans AND HELEN were horrendous). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their vet is in Southampton, so we were constantly driving long distances, going back-and-forth for emergency appointments save this poor little guy[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Helen would've given me another, but he would've died if I did. I've bought two dogs from Sportsmans and they have both been great. Years ago a Samoyed and more recently a Labradoodle. Both great dogs. My Labradoodle always alerts me to visitors(and alerts them to his presence). He is also great with my kids. He just has sooo much energy. I have bought several dogs over the years from Sportsman kennels, in particular two Chocolate Labradors, both were wonderful dogs with great dispositions. In that time I also bought two other Labs (I usually have 3 to 4 dogs at any given time) from a different breeder as well as from a private individual. In all cases, the dogs bought from Sportsman's had many parasites when i bought that were quite expensive, and time consuming to get rid of. My other dogs would ultimately get them and it became very expensive and time consuming consuming to get rid of. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Sportsman's did offer vet treatment, but the vet was near Sportsman's and too much of a distance to take them to.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After about 12 years, both labs purchased from Sportsman ended up with some form of cancer, whereas the ones purchased elsewhere died of other causes, one lived about 15 years. The labs from Sportsman's also developed large protruding bumps that were unsightly on their sides or stomach, my non sportsman labs never did. Perhaps there are other factors involved, but I cannot help but feel (after two similar experiences with labs from Sportsman's) that it was a breeding problem. I will be avoiding buying any from pets from Sportman's because of these similar experiences, it just seems too coincidental.... read more

I bought my 5 month yellow lab (REMINGTON) in July of 2022. I paid about 3,000. Which included some last min. Supplies, gate, leash etc. He is a big gorgeous dog. He receives many complements on how handsone he is. He likes our cat sweet and gentle with her, loves other dogs and not a big barker. He's always a gentleman at dog park or playing at Dogtopia. However, he's very standoffish with people. Won't let them pet him at all. Very embarrassing. Most importantly, he is robust and healthy. When we got him he had THE WORST watery diarrhea for weeks and needed to eat expensive vet perscribed food. He has a terrible fetish of chewing sticks in the yard that he can't control. He slept through the night from day one and likes his own crate bed with door wide open and wants to retire at 6 He sticks to his routine like a script. We rescued him from Sportsman as it def seemed like a puppymill. Never saw his "parents" or living quarters. Yes Helen is a nut but I overlooked all that to get this big lug WHICH WE LOVE TO DEATH. read more

My husband and I spent a long Friday evening looking at several adorable puppies. I picked up my puppy 9 days later on Monday July 19th. I called 2 days ahead of time so they had time to groom and bathe her. I appreciated that too! Helen is a hoot, and takes her business seriously. BUT...BUYER BEWARE! She told me the dog was 6 months old, buy when I looked over her vet papers she was really 9 months! Why did no-one take this cutie, and no name for 9 months!! I absolutely loved my experience with Sportsman kennels. Helen was an absolute pleasure to work with. We live in the area and decided to stop by on short notice. We instantly fell in love with a puppy that was to young to bring home that day. Helen had no problem with us visiting on a regular basis. Every visit she took the time out to sit with me and explain everything I needed to know about the breed. On the day of pick up, she came in earlier than she needed to sit down with us again to explain everything again. She has a love for these puppies and we couldn't be happier with Bogey. He was fully groomed with the perfect blue bow wrapped around him to come home. He has been such a pleasure and such a love for our family. I visited this facility this past weekend and I'm delighted that I did. First and foremost, the owner Helen, she is an absolute gem and a knowledgeable one at that. She is extremely pleasant but does not beat around the bush about the dogs she provides. I was able to purchase an adorable corgi and cannot be happier. She provided every bit of information such as the age/birthday of the puppies and all of their shots were taken care with validation provided. This was one of the WORST experiences that I have ever had. My boyfriend and I had an appointment to see cavapoo's and mini golden doodles. They brought us a havanese to look at. He was COVERED in poop and smelt awful. I then had to walk out of the gated area to ask an employee to see more dogs because at this point, we had already been there for a half an hour and had only seen the one dog. No one was assisting us with anything. We were just alone with the 1 dog. Once I complained, they then brought us another dog to see and this dog needed to be groomed so badly, we couldn't even tell what she was. I was furious at this point because, we had been there for an hour. MIND YOU, we were unattended and outside by ourselves with these dogs. The owner and her employees were inside the office. We could have easily taken these dogs and no one would have even noticed. I walked into the office with the dogs and returned them to the owner. I said, "no one ever came back for the dogs or to even show us more" the owner said, "I know". And took the dog from my hands. She did not apologize, just took the dog and walked away. I am honestly in shock with how we were treated and how poorly these dogs are treated. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!! The old lady, Helen, who runs the place CANNOT handle the pandemic rush. She has NO idea what dogs are coming in and when... She puts you on hold and forgets about you, says she will call you back, never does. And the worst part is she will hang up on you ALL THE TIME. Her answer is always "Busy busy, bye!!" Or "Gotta go! *hang up*" IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR SENTENCE!! Especially if you have a question regarding anything that doesn't involve money like "How old will they be?" or "Are we allowed to see the dog before we get it?" I called about a Havanese a few weeks ago and Helen wasn't sure when they were coming in but said if I put a deposit down, she will call me when she knows they are in...so my wife and I placed a $500 refundable deposit down and of course....no callback. I tried calling her the next week and she said they will be 100% be here on Wednesday. I called Tuesday AM and PM to confirm if she is getting them in and she had no idea. Wednesday came so I called and she said she was stiffed a few weeks ago by her last "breeder" and that they might have to wait an additional week or so. I called back another week later (today), and was told "Nope, they didn't come in, try again next week *hangup*" I called back and demanded my deposit be cancelled (which they did) They don't answer any questions. They are out for suckers who have no idea what they are doing or paying for. After hearing from others, the process with the pandemic is they bring the dog to you in a box to your car, ask you if you want it, and make you sign and pay right away. It's a pay up or quiet up business. We called the other dog business in Aquebogue and they gave us straight honest information, had no pressure, a less expensive deposit, actually answered their emails, and didn't hang up on us. My boyfriend and I recently purchased a puppy from here on 9/26/20 Not even 48 hrs of having him we had to take him to the hospital to find out he had Parvo Virus. We got our golden retriever pup from here this past March. She was almost 5 months old when we got her and we were constantly told how great her hips are. This week we found out that our 8 month old puppy needs double hip surgery! The poor dog currently can't even use her back right leg. It is devastating and we hope no one else has to deal with this! The policy claims that you can get a free dog (equal price) if your dog develops hip dysplasia with in 2 years of getting them! It's terrible. These people are total frauds. I called a few weeks back, spoke to a seemingly sober woman named Amy. She had Chocolate Lab puppies, but was getting a litter of Golden Retrievers that Thursday and if I wanted I could put a deposit down and have second pick of the litter. So I did. I called Thursday to inquire about timing of meeting the pups and picking one out and was told by another seemingly sober woman, Helen, that they only had two females left and if I wanted one, I best get out there that night. When I mentioned I had put a deposit down she laughed and said "Okay.. get here by tonight then." Understanding the unusual circumstances, and the fact I I had the time to go, I did. And I picked out the perfect little pup. They took my credit card, wrote up the contract with her information and I snapped a few pictures of her ID collar. They also charged me DOUBLE the amount they told me they would for a deposit-- dismissing it with an excuse "The machine was out of paper" (Wasn't aware that caused math to be wrong too?). Whatever, I had a contract. When I tried getting them nailed down on specifics about when I could come back and pick her up and other needs, it was "call us later." Again, I dismissed it given the current circumstances and Helens seeming need to stay as far away from other humans as possible. Then the follow up calls. It was a mix of a seemingly drunk Amy and an effusive and dismissive and always flustered Helen. Finally we nailed down a pick up date. Hours after that call: a frantic call from Helen that we needed to pick the puppy up TODAY because they were closing and they faced huge fines if they stay open. How soon could I be there? Considering the contract says that AFTER THEY CALL YOU FOR PICKUP, you FORFEIT the deposit if you don't get the dog, I made my way there as quickly as I could. When we arrived there were four cars in the driveway and a nurse running back and fourth to them and the store with dogs, food and other supplies-- the dogs all housed in small boxes. As we waited my card was charged for the remainder of what we owed-- a great step, or so I thought. After waiting another 30-45 minutes I finally flagged down Helen only to be told that my dog had "a runny nose and she can't go home with you." Odd: they had charged my card. "There's no funny business going on here.." Was her response to my asking if she wasn't ready to go now, why then did they charge my credit card? I was promised a free crate and some "other goodies" for the time I've spent waiting and driving back-and-fourth from Manhattan. But then the story changed. Maybe they'd be open tomorrow, maybe next week, maybe in a month. As for when I could get the dog? That timeline kept changing too. I mentioned a full refund and Helen was far too happy to comply. And then the story changed again. Maybe I could get a dog tomorrow or maybe she could have one sent to me. No thanks. Avoid this place at ALL COSTS. They lie, they overcharge and they clearly aren't treating the animals as well as you may expect. These people are total frauds.. and I'm amazed they've managed to stay in business for 50 years. read more

Sold me a dog that was not the breed the breed they said it was. I was supposed to have a Cavachon but instead I have a cavalier mixed with some other breed. We are waiting for the DNA testing. Even though the paperwork said it was. They tell you that they breed the dogs on premises, but that is not true. They have the dogs shipped there from Puppy Mills. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also look out for helen, She lies. She told me not to turn the air conditioner on when I bring my 12 week old puppy home because he will die. And that's exactly how she said it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Come to find out he actually was sick and had kennel cough, so she was covering her own butt in the event that my dog died when he got home. Thankfully, my Puppy receives veterinarian care and pulled out of it. However, he is severely underweight and small, and I have a very hard time feeding him to this day. My husband and I fell for Helen's tricks a year ago when we purchased a Chocolate Lab puppy. We lost our family dogs during the pandemic and landed at Sportsman when we couldn't get into shelters. When we were supposed to bring her home, Helen tried to keep us from bringing her home and said she needed more vaccinations that she told us were done when we called to confirm we could bring her home. We stood our ground and said we were coming to get her regardless and would take care of the rest on our own . When we brought her home, she was positive for exposure to giardia (which they claim they assume all of the dogs are, yet they fail to mention they actually have it). After time with us, we started notice her limping and not putting full weight on her hind legs at times, then even her fronts; she would sit a little funny, so we investigated further with our vet. Our puppy is now 1 and has both hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as bone spurs in both elbows from improper breeding. Thankfully, she's still playful and has adjusted to her life with these issues, but that wasn't until after thousands were spent in vet bills, medications and hydrotherapy for her. We even brought in a behaviorist to help with certain behavioral things who said what we were seeing was common in MANY dogs from Sportsman. I didn't even bother wasting my time as all these medical issues were unraveling because Helen knows her way around the system and will somehow get out of any wrongdoing (look up the puppy with parvo who she did nothing to help and Polyanna). We may have an absolutely wonderful dog, but feel gutted over the fact that she will have very uncomfortable days due to the poor breeding tactics from this place. At the end of the day, we wish we would have done our due diligence before coming here, but we feel we rescued our girl from this awful place and are now doing anything and everything in our power to help her. When we received all of the paperwork once we brought her home, we found out the "breeder" listed at the top of her "pedigree" is a known puppy mill in Pennsylvania. They also don't disclose that all of their dogs are not tested properly but try to convince you they are. Do your research before you go here. I tried calling and sent an email and got no response so weeks later I looked online to see what their Covid procedures were and when I did not see restrictions I decided to go there to look at the dogs as we have done in the past. When I pulled in this woman comes outside yelling to go away and call her on the phone. There were other customers outside also being yelled at and she said nobody is coming in here. That seems odd. I understand that we are in a pandemic and if that was the reason then she should explain that to people and communicate better. Helen, the owner, is a rude and downright disrespectful woman who does not care about the dogs. I was in search for a labradoodle and went there to purchase one. The labradoodle was purchased for $4,000 (way too expensive). They told me to "forget about the dog until we call you to pick it up". They said it would be three weeks. I called this week to ask what day I would be able to pick him up to find out that his jaw had been broken. Helen never reached out to tell me the puppy I had just paid 4K for had BROKEN his jaw. It's unfathomable to understand how a dog gets a broken jaw under their care. Helen continued to ramble on and on about nothing, providing no answers. She even laughed at me on the phone with my concerns about how a dog under her care can break their jaw and she "didn't know". PLEASE DON'T BUY A DOG FROM THIS WOMAN!!!! We bought a yellow lab from Helen 7 years ago she said she was taking over the business from the original owner because he had Alzheimer's. Later we found out not true. We had to wait weeks to get the puppy she kept adding on money. In the 7 years we owned Max he had separation problems, severe allergies, both knees had to be operated on, lameness, 3 fatty tumors, allergies between the webs in his feet and a special diet of only chicken. The vet even had us bring him to emergency clinics for 2nd opinions. Finally over a month ago he was diagnosed with spleen cancer and past away this week. The oncologist at the emergency clinic said that some breeds do get spleen cancer but it is a over breeding hereditary problem. Therefore she should be put out of business. read more

Meet Charlie! My playful, intelligent, curious & spirited miniature schnauzer. I searched high and low for a place to purchase a mini schnauzer during quarantine and couldn't find one that felt safe, clean and reliable enough. Sportsman's Kennels, although at times busy and admittedly a bit hectic on the weekend, delivered what they promised. I had the opportunity to visit Charlie 3x before purchasing and felt comfortable to move forward and place a deposit. Upon purchasing, I was given his medical records and a packet with important info regarding my new pup. Was he a bit pricey? Yes. Did that deter me? No. Most other places were similarly priced and less appealing than Sportsman's Kettle. Charlie came with a health guarantee, initial vaccinations, dog travel gear and a microchip. His first vet appointment was a success as he was declared healthy & happy by his highly experienced vet. Horrible place - we brought our dog in to get her eyes checked and when Helen called us back she stated she would give us a refund bc the procedure the dog needed was old school and she couldn't find anyone to do it. I was so shocked / this pup was part of our family at this point. When I told her we would like a refund and she said it would be best, but I still was hesitant. I called her back later that evening and told her we would keep the pup and had more questions, she said the dog was gone already and shipped back to her breeder. Come to find out she lied and re-homed the pup. Helen is heartless , cold woman. Idk how she sleeps at night. This place should be shut down!! read more

I went to Sportsman's yesterday to just "look" because I saw the mixed reviews on Yelp. When I arrived, I was greeted and helped immediately. I was totally impressed by the service I got and the adorable puppies they showed me. I was given all the time I needed to play with puppies and all my questions were answered. The puppies were active, alert and super snuggly. The Kennel has a lot of puppies and they all looked healthy and happy. I fell in love with one of the pups and decided to purchase her immediately. There was no pressure and they even told me I could come back with my family if I wanted to. Since I was able to take pics and videos of the puppies and email them, I didn't need to come back. As the staff at Sportsmans got my puppy ready to go home (she got her last round of needed shots), I was helped with buying an appropriate sized kennel, food, toys, leash and given info on how she was cared for in the kennel and explicit instructions on continuing her care. My puppy finally came out with adorable pink bows in her hair all beautified and ready to go home. The experience was fabulous!!! Sportsmans follows strict NY State regulations and I felt very comfortable buying a puppy there. The staff was incredible with me and I witnessed another family given the same treatment with their new puppy. I took my new puppy to my vet this afternoon and she got a clean bill of health!!
