They are also the number one dog breed euthanized in shelters across the country -- including the NYC shelter. There is a shelter in Islip, near Brentwood. Why not ADOPT a pit bull? I don't know the Islip shelter, but I bet Pit Bulls are the number one breed euthanized there too. Please do not support the breeding of Pit Bulls (or any dog for that matter) when so many dogs need homes and so many Pit Bulls lose their lives every single day in local shelters.

Wow.. whew! A rescue specialist on the North Fork - for the occasional injured turtle in the…read moreroad. First time ever finding an actual injured turtle- Stopped because I had just drove past what looked sort of round and orangey in color- Backed up slowly beside to see a little juvenile box turtle walking in circles - No way to help across the road because he/ she was confused or injured. Picked up to check and lo and behold- face tucked in and bloody near face and neck under the shell front. Brought him straight to a puddle gave a tiny dip of water to help heal / drink then put onto some papers in a small box in the back that had held trash bags (emptied)- took a side off and with a little bending was a good way to hold him/ her in the car- and ready to find help. In the car he got back some strength and put his injured head out - and climbed up the little box - Oh no! Raced back to a garage for a bigger tall box and double boxed him for safety. Boxed twice -- small inside big on newspaper- raced over (15-20 min) to this amazing rescue group up on the North Fork after making a half a dozen calls around. Karen answered- and gave the ok to bring - Stacy, Danielle and Carley welcomed the sweet baby turtle in - brought him to ICU and - think he has a good chance to recover. While there I was given a small informal tour around and learned just how serious these wonderful people are. They pick up where everyone else drives on or by. They made me feel like I helped a creature meanwhile - it's all on them - they work 8-10 hours a day - a wonderful young woman told me. Please think about these groups when needing to save a creature and again when feeling generous - local groups really do the work and get results. If better in a few weeks, months or years they may be released to their original territory- within the distance of a football field they said- usually walking distance to some type of water.
