I've passed this Long Island Welcome Center many many times. I honestly never had a reason to stop there. However that all changed when they advertised that I could stop in and pick up my FREE Solar eclipse sunglasses. This Long Island Welcome Center is beautiful and so clean! It's so aesthetically pleasing that I'd definitely stop again. Why you wonder? Turns out there's way more here than just restrooms. I walked around outside noticing the cute details like the Long Island stars recognizing LI celebrities like Billy Joel, the mini replica of a lighthouse and a small children's play area with a whale. Once inside, I was pleasantly surprised to see how shiny and clean everything was. It wasn't crowded on this Tuesday afternoon. Seeing no one to ask about my free solar eclipse sunglasses, I approached an employee working in the Market. When I inquired about the free lunar Solar eclipse sunglasses, I was greeted with a warm welcome. I shared that I had never been there before and I was instantly given a tour of all the local Long Island and INY merchandise available. My tour guide (not really just a super nice employee) was so friendly and welcoming. Needless to say, there is quite an extensive LOCAL lineup from coffee to baked goods to LI grown potato chips to fresh basil to LI swag including hoodies & towels to beauty products to home decor and much more! WARNING! Numerous people have fallen very seriously inside this welcome center due to the rubbery leed-certified flooring. NY state Governor's office is aware of this problem but not addressing it. i had an extremely painful and complex injury requiring medical care & pt so far, from this fall and spoke with numerous people at DOT (who owns the bldg). Reported that Welcome Center employees told me others have fallen too, and this is frequent. if you fall, know that they are aware of this problem and email me at lnj2000@aol.com. You have a civil case. But older people's ribs would never withstand this type of frontwards fall. And we worry about head injuries. I had tissue and organ bruising that never went away and hurt multiple parts of my body. I spoke with Governor's office regional director Michael Caplice who copied others on our email to "watch" as he manipulated me and refused to provide me with insurance information so I could get care. Obviously, this state is not lead by quality mentors. We encourage you to call the Governor's office directly with complaints, as she clearly doesn't care about people's well-being. read more

It's about time there is real rest stop on the LIE. For years you could drive the length of LI and have to get off at an exit and hope to find a fast food joint or gas station in the nick of time to pee or poop! First time visiting this rest stop and it's really nice. Clean spacious bathrooms, modern design to the building itself, LI memorabilia and historic items on display, children's playground, electric car charging ports, decent sized parking lot, dog walking area, and overall a good experience. Much needed for sure. You won't find the normal fast food shops here. There's a small cafe for sandwiches and coffee. The store here features mostly food and snack items from local farms and purveyors on the island. Seems a bit pricey to me overall, but I'm mainly here for the bathroom and to grab a coffee and continue on my way. Also, why wouldn't they build one of these in the opposite direction too as most highways have done? Still, this was something that's good to have while traveling on the LIE. read more

A clean and convenient place to stop while driving. The restrooms are well taken care of, and the food options aren't just the typical Combos and pretzels. They have a market-style area with mostly local products. You can also get an affordable cup of coffee that cost $2.28 for a medium size. No complaints! I live really closely but never stopped in as I never needed to. I currently have close friends in town. One used to live here and one has never been here. I figured the Long Island Welcome Center would be a good place to stop in for a few. We were on our way out East, so it was on the way in our travels. Plenty of parking as you enter. I also noticed a doggy area. Inside was very clean. There is a store that has local food and some gifts. Bathrooms were equally as clean. There is also some information regarding Long Island inside. Very interesting to me that Long Island has its very own rest stop. I did always wonder why it's only on the one side of the LIE though...but that adds to the uniqueness of it. read more

Wow! I first saw this place being constructed eight years ago, and this is my inaugural visit. I needed to stop at a bathroom , and I was pleasantly surprised by how exceptionally clean the restrooms were--it felt like home. From the walls to the rim of the toilet bowl, everything was impeccable. Unfortunately, the food service was closed since I arrived after midnight. Overall, this is one of the cleanest welcome/rest stops I've encountered during my travels across the United States.. The attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness really sets this location apart. It's clear that the staff take pride in maintaining this space, ensuring it remains a comfortable and inviting spot for weary travelers. Despite the late hour, the atmosphere was peaceful and serene, offering a perfect place to rest and recharge before continuing on my journey. Less-than-top marks for the random and not particularly comprehensive food and drink selection. McDonalds? No. Subway? No. Rebecca from Sayville's homemade white chocolate chunk cookies? Yes. Im supportive of not leasing the place to the usual brotherhood of fast food dining options - but wish there were some hot food/meals on offer rather than just expensive pre-made sandwiches and high end baked goods. Refrigerated selection of Long Island foodstuffs for sale seems a bit misconstrued. I don't know about you, but when I stop for a pee I'm not also looking for a wheel of goat cheese to chomp on back in the car. Worth a stop for the sake of your bladder. I live so close yet never stopped! It's so beautiful inside and CLEAN! They have an eating area that's closed because of Covid so hopefully it will be up soon. Modeled after a little market, they have local goods for sale! There's an area with local history and photographs, looking like a little museum. Outside, there's a space to walk the dogs and get the kids out of the car to stretch their legs. Plenty of parking and easy on and off to the LIE. Fix the bathrooms. Stalls are closed out of order. Sinks need to be fixed. This place use to be great but now it's getting run down.

I stopped by this place when it first opened curious to see if they had any coffee or snacks to munch on&was disappointed. Coffee was expensive&was not worth the money&time vowing not to come again. Passing by the area I gave it another chance craving for some coffee. Great choice! Inside looks so much better w/o dmv office that I believe was there. The restroom was clean&inside is better decorated. And the coffee was fabulous! Its self serve&cheaper than before. They now also have products like cookies, chips&drinks from local shops. The rainbow cookies I bought might have been pricey, but it tasted good, introduced me to bakeries in the area&I had to get it to go along w/my coffee. read more

Finally the northern expressway has a pit stop for those who are coming from a far and are heading east. This newly opened establishment a small market to purchase snacks, drinks or a small meal. There is an eating area to the left that you can rest comfortably and they also have a small multipurpose room. There is also restroom facilities and a water fountain if you need to refresh yourself. In the front they have a whale statue and a boat to the right of the entrance that can be a cute photo op. There is also a mini lighthouse to the left. The entrance path has plaques of names of famous Long Island celebrities. There is plenty of parking in the lot. The lot includes specialized parking area for electric cars. The location of the welcome center is slightly strange since you're about a quarter of he way into Suffolk county by that point to call it a "welcome center." You would think a welcome center would be in Nassau county or close to the queens border, but I assume that the location may be because it may be the first available space for the rest area. read more

OK I know we're Long Islanders and love the Island but my personal opinion is that many of the reviews are exaggerated. I will say that it's a huge improvement from what was there before. The previous rest Stop had a lot of bad stuff going on . And yes it is an attractive looking building, but it seems to end there. There is an area where you can buy food but from what I saw, it's nothing compared to rest stops along the NY Thruway, or Jersey Turnpike. There are a lot of pastries, some sandwiches and soft drinks. I noticed that they sell quarts of soup to go. Tomato soup, Minestrone soup, so where's the lobster bisque, or New England Clam Chowder. I searched the fridge but none there. There's plenty of seating, probably too much which could have been filled with another concession, say a LI tee shirt or sweatshirt store. Bathrooms are OK, but you have to walk all the way through the building to get to them. Sorry but 3 Stars is a gift as far as I'm concerned. Sure I'll stop there on occasion but primarily for the rest room. read more

Let's talk about this place. I really can't believe everyone gives it such high marks. At most, I think it's a middle-of-the-road rest stop (pun intended? ) It's clean, modern and full of natural light. It's brand new and well maintained (so far at least). Lots of seating and wifi. As for a place to stop and go to the bathroom, or sit a minute, it's perfect. That's why it earns the three starts I gave it. However, there is no real food selection. There's one vendor: an overpriced coffee/sandwich shop that also sells "local" groceries (of which, some aren't even from Long Island). It's WAY overpriced. A small piece of carrot cake I got was $6.00, and while tasty, not $6.00 worth of tasty. This is a rest stop on the highway, not a gourmet bakery. The map on the floor leaves out popular Long Island attractions... for example, why doesn't it include The Big Duck??? It also includes attractions that are not really tourist spots: Oheka Castle? Huh? Thats an event hall and luxury hotel, not a landmark in most Long Islanders' minds The outdoor children's park is neat looking but not all that functional, and unless I'm missing something, they missed the chance to include some sprinkler/water fountains for summertime. A shame they skipped it. The parking lot really isn't that large compared to other welcome centers I've been too, and there are seriously no other amenities. No fast food options, no Dunkin' Donuts... and don't get me started on their coffee. I wanted a nice latte or cappuccino to go with my overpriced cake and while they did offer them, they had zero options for decaf. Really guys? The sign in entrance says no trucks allowed... it's unclear whether they allow RVs at all. I didn't notice parking spots set up for larger ones. Next time I'll just go to the Starbucks three exits east. I think their parking lot is almost as big and their pastries are actually cheaper. Bathroom is just as clean and wifi is just as free... Should we talk about the fact it's the first rest stop "welcome center" you'll hit on Long Island but it's not exactly close to where you'd expect to be welcomed... if you're a tourist who just held your pee while white-knuckling through bridge and/or tunnel traffic, or jeez, the cross Bronx... you'll have to wait even longer until this place pops up: AFTER queens, and AFTER Nassau County. I'm sorry, this just isn't a good rest stop. While some of the amenities they do have are neat (like DMV kiosks), some of the true necessities of what you'd expect are clearly missing. It's basically a really fancy restroom. They missed some real opportunities here. They could have taken cues from CT and NJ as far a great rest stops and welcome centers. Short of needing to use the ladies room, I won't be spending a dime here again. read more

I stopped there yesterday, and I was really pleased at how clean this rest stop is for travelers. I really was impressed with the pet relief area. It was so clean, and well kept. The only thing missing was the doggie poop bags, the receptacle was empty of bags. I highly recommend this rest area, and hopefully they will put one up in the westbound side. read more

Being born and raised on Long Island, I've explored a lot of the isle. Despite this, there's still so much more to see and do. So how does someone who isn't from the area get a little insight (and maybe a little taste....and a bathroom) into this great island? Build an amazingly beautiful welcome center! I've been driving by this construction site for months and was elated to learn it was finally open when I headed out east yesterday. The exterior of the center is incredible. A miniature model of the Montauk Lighthouse is the landmark of this spot, but beyond that you'll obtain a true nautical, maritime feel through all the decor. Buoys, boats, anchors, and a humpback whale can all be found around the outside. There's also the Long Island Walk of Fame surrounding the entrance, giving you a little local celeb info. They were selling pickles and pretzels (the kinds you find at festivals and street fairs) by one side of the doorways as well. Enter into Long Island land. A wondrous ceiling structure of blue and purple glassy waves creating an oceanic feel. A huge tiled map of Long Island below your feet. Continue straight ahead for some historic artifacts from the area. To the right is the mecca of local food. Tons of items (sauces, dips, drinks, chips, etc.) all made from this island and surrounding NY spots. The tiny cafe selling coffee, pastries, and sandwiches is also delightful. There's a handful of vending machines selling Long Island goods towards the front too. I had to support this center and splurge on a few items (ham and tumbleweed cheddar sandwich, North Fork sweet potato chips, green apricot orange Subtle Tea, and Just Sprouted pumpkin chocolate chip bread). It was a great, little fresh lunch that I never would've thought possible at a rest area. I ate across from the cafe in a nice seating locarion complete with a giant "I *heart* NY" photo op as well as several interactive screens offering information and trivia about LI. And it might not always be a factor in a restaurant, but the bathrooms here are stunning. Overall, this welcome center/rest area makes me proud to be a Long Islander. Even if you don't need to make a stop, you should stop, just to check out everything this place has to offer. And if you're from out of the area, Long Island welcomes you, with style, class, taste, and wonderful bathrooms! read more

11:30 am on Tuesday Jan 23rd I go in to Taste of NY for coffee. They're out. I ask them if they have more in back. A short woman comes over to check the coffee and she seems exasperated already. I see they have nitro nearby. To make it easier I go to ask for nitro instead. She thinks I want to use my coffee cup which I don't and gets even more irate over her mistaken opinion: I ask her why she's so upset and she tells me it's because I can't use the coffee cup. I tell her I didn't plan on it that I was going to ask for nitro instead of coffee to make it easier for her and she just keeps up her wall of irritation. What sort of god awful customer service is this? Hire some professionals for gods sake! read more

I am a huge fan of the Long Island Welcome Center! This is the perfect place for a quick bathroom break, and it's beautiful inside. I also love the TasteNY store inside. Others have complained about the prices (which certainly aren't cheap), but the product selection is surprisingly unique and high end. The gimmick of the store is that everything being sold was produced in New York State. I love stopping for a bottle of non-homogenized milk from the Hudson Valley or cookies from the North Country. They also have really good pre-made sandwiches, and I've never eaten anything I haven't liked from the Welcome Center. The self-checkout is a little weird, but it's a compromise with the federal government which enforces an arcane law from the 1950s banning full-service food establishments along interstate highways (every other rest stop you've ever been to was grandfathered in). Outside, there's a giant whale, play area, mini dog park, and electric car DC-fast charging (CHAdeMO only). read more

A place like this has been needed for a long time. It can be quite the voyage heading out towards the end of the island. It's right off of the highway and there is plenty of parking. The place is beautiful and (so far), very well maintained. There is plenty of information about the island decoratively placed throughout the walls and floor making it fun to wander about. The restrooms are clean and there is free wifi. I was really taken back on the lack of food options. I loved how there were healthy options, but it was all SO EXPENSIVE. The vendor inside is run by a store called Taste NY. They carry a lot of items that are made in the NY area, it caters more to someone who is looking to purchase a souvenir rather than someone who is looking for a quick pick me up on a road trip. Everything from a cup of coffee to a sandwich was priced at at least double what we would have paid had I had our gps route us to a stop on one of the following exits. The store is open until 9pm. They have a few vending machines for those arriving after hours, but they are also stocked with items from the store. I would stop here again, but just to use the restroom. read more

What a beautiful facility. Obviously brand spanking new thanks to Christina J. and her work crew for literally paving the way getting this structure constructed. My girlfriend suggested we pit stop here before continuing on further East. Entered the relatively small, modern, beigey/purpely-blue/white facility without my phone to take pics and I wanted to kick myself. So, I had to go old school and use my mental camera also known as my brain and use that mental imagery for review reference. As you can see from the business page, no additional pics were needed from me for this rest stop, as anything worth capturing had already been masterfully captured. This welcome center is small in comparison to any I-95/NJ Turnpike rest stop for cars and 18 wheelers but a nice change of pace to break up the monotonous drive providing easy off exit 52 and easy back on to I-495/LIE. -Decent amount of car parking available -No visible rest stop for tractor trailers (Negative) -Friendly smiling employees -Interactive screens for your LI references -Adirondacks available to chill -Kids play area so the, 'are we there yet?' can stop -Comfort Pet area available -Local healthy vendor food options (No fast food) -Dining area available -Cleanest public bathrooms I've ever seen This rest stop is worth a pit stop. read more

Any Long Islander knows driving down the 495 feels endless sometimes. Its about time they build a pit stop to give people some rest in between. Maybe people tried not to have this place built, I say why? It is a beautiful structure and it shows the true beauty of our Island. Outside has plenty of parking and even before you pull up they give you notice that it's 2 miles down the road with bright blue New York signs. You almost don't want to go in the building because there is so much to do on the outside. Enter the building it looks more like a Coliseum with high ceilings and open space concept. It is a sight to behold. They also have trivia games to test your knowledge of Long Island and other fun facts. They Also have a museum section that shows the past and its proof of a simpler time. The staff was super friendly, they greeted everyone who walked in. They knew a lot about the Island, they even complimented my jacket. This staff is great. They will do a good job showing people out of state how friendly we Long Islanders can be. There were still contractors working in the building, fixing exit signs, last minute installation of a vending machine and wiping down and cleaning up the grounds. The food is the final way to express what we Islanders are about. There are no commercial name companies in this place. Sorry Starbucks junkies, no morning Dunkin Donut coffee before work, no Mcgriddle pick up by the drive throw! Everything here is made on the Island and is healthy! That's great. Plus the food is really good. I am going to come here more often for the turkey wrap. It was delicious. If you plan to go out East and need to make a pit stop, pull in. My initial walk-through of the Welcome Center was like an amusement park. There were amenities and entertainments at every turn. I loved the mixture of quaint Long Island history in the modern interactive features The Welcome Center has to assist travelers. Yes Long Island is a water world and tribute to our nautical heritage is evident here. The really cool lighthouse welcomes all, and it's beacon can be spied from afar. Need help ?? Suffolk County and New York State Police have mini stationsand officers here. Your Doggies will be lovin this welcome waggin. With the pet rest stop. The kids have a mini play area. Really cool It features a real boat and a big blue Long Island whale, for the kids to climb on and take pics with. The kiddie play area features a soft rubberized base. No bumps or scrapes. Relax with your Cappuccino's on the country style porch with the white picket fence on a big relaxin Adirondack chairs. Hold on did I say cappuccino? Hell yeah, That's a barista inside There. With yummy cakes cookies pastries and Long Island veggies jams, jellies to fill your bellies. Huge modern bathrooms and even a place to renew your drivers license. so who knows that there is nothing really like this anywhere on Long Island...this is a good down home like on the Turnpike Rest Area and its so good its an easy off easy traveling east on the good ol 495 also known as the Long Island expressway. Do not drive past if if you are going that way GO VISIT well lit parking light by night front walk way has "stars" and their hometowns of Long Island like in Hollywood can you name a few? I saw Billy Joel Rosie O'donnal and others go see for yourself, Inside you will find many New York State products for sale everything from Apples & Cheese to Yogurt all from NY state plus a lovely food concession(open till 9pm) with sammies and salads plus coffee and cakes. The sandwiches will run you about 7 dollars not so bad they have lunch box specials which are a whole meal. plus seasonal coffees such as pumpkin latte the staff are very friendly and welcoming On one visit there was a pickle vendor and a pretzel vendor out out on the porch selling their wares. Of course some pickles came home with me Lots of tables to sit and relax, bathrooms of course (open 24 hours) and Long Island artifacts you can view in big glass displays big screen have stunning views of famous beautiful Long Island places. There is a DMV in there which look like kiosks one of my favorite features is the big inviting porch with adirondack chairs you can sit and relax a dog break section even a big faux whale for the kids to see what a great place stop for a bit and a bite sit relax and don't forget to play the Long Island Trivia game read more

I love this place. It's located on the east bound side of the Long Island expressway. Not only do they have very clean restrooms but it's also a mini museum showcasing Long Island history. As you enter on the right is an Area where you can buy local creations from brownies to cookies, organic ice cream and milk, sauces, fruit jams, honey, and even Long Island T-shirts and coffee. What I thought was going to be a complete waste of space, this rest stop come tourist attraction actually serves a purpose. Located on the LIE between exits 51 and 52 in Dix Hills, this place offers more than just a bathroom. There's nice porch with Adirondack chairs to watch car accidents on the expressway. Go inside and there's a market specializing in local produce and groceries. Overpriced but so is everything else on Long Island. There's a spacious seating area inside with wifi and screens promoting LI tourist attractions and the rest rooms are surprisingly clean. Best thing about it, there's a Community Room where you can actually renew your driver's license and car registration. That's a great convenience. Not necessary for locals to stop here but if you're a visitor, this is as good a welcome center as you can get. read more

Finally, we have a muched needed rest stop welcome center in Long Island. Its nicely done using the whaling history of the area as a theme and having a LI walk of fame at the entrance. The inside is modern and sleek yet comfortable. We went with Gramps and we had a field day at the eating area. All foids ate local or from NYS farms. The bottled milk is so buttery that cream formed on top. We had to scoop out the cream, spread it on the tarts and breads we bought and eat it...delicious. A bit expensive but worth it. Wow our governor hit the spot.Travelers and those who live here can stop for restrooms, snacks etc and find various clean, organized and we'll set up facility for the public. I was saddened to hear no trucks...this was where they pulled over to sleep or take vacation break now they're is no place for v them on tyne south of the long island expressway. I'm not site that decision was a safe one for us bc They are working and will drive tired with those huge trucks....maybe direct them Somewhere read more
