The end of…read more the world Race Point Lighthouse is a wild, wild place. It's located on the very end of Cape Cod and is exposed to howling winds, blowing sand and unpredictable, sinister and malefic currents. The name race means a very strong and dangerous flow of water in old nautical terminology and whoever named it Race Point certainly knew what he was talking about. Before the Cape Cod Canal was built all ships had to pass around the tip of Cape Cod and ship wrecks here were very common. The first lighthouse was established way back in 1816 but since it was only 20 feet tall and took a pounding from the hostile environment, it soon became apparently that something a bit stronger was needed. So in 1876 the present 40 foot tall cast iron tower was built. It had a fourth order Fresnel lens and is credited with saving hundreds of ships and lives. The whole area around the lighthouse is now just sand dunes but at one time it was a busy fishing village called Helltown. Of course the name came from the harsh and unforgiving environment. The village started to disappear about a hundred years ago as people got tired of the hammering winds and waves and moved to more protected places in the area. Winds over 50 knots are common at the point and very little of Helltown is now visible. It's not particularly easy to get to Race Point Lighthouse. it's about a two mile hike over some soft sand and wind is frequently blowing in your face. It's an invigorating place to visit in the winter but you better be prepared for some serious wind chills. I've been out here in a Nor Eastern and the visibility is literally zero. The wind was blowing horizontally and one side of my body was covered in ice but the other side clean. Extremely cool weather. I have heard that humpback whales are occasionally visible and just looking a the wild and uncivilized ocean is aways thrilling. Certainly not the easiest lighthouse to visit but always one of the wildest.

We visited Coast Guard Beach on a Sunday, for the morning and early afternoon. We parked at 8:50am,…read morethe trolley was there waiting but we decided to walk the 1 mile path to the beach. It was a nice walk, altho for the 1st half it was wooded and the ground a bit dirty so i should have worn sneakers vs flip flops. The later part is paved and a boardwalk which was pretty. We took the trolley back and it was fast and easy. There are bathrooms at the main parking area as well as at the closest beach parking (resident only). Bathroom was clean and was being cleaned while we were there. The beach is huge especially at low tide. The surf was rough with endless seals swimming by and a shark flag waving. Water a bit cold. We walked 1 mile south during low tide and enjoyed all the tide pools and different shapes created in the sand by the water. We also walked a half mile north and it is very quiet except for the spot next to the entrance. Peaceful and reminded us of being on an island as it was so quiet with not many people around, and unique scenery. Bring your own everything as there is no snack shack.

There are some nice walkways to lookouts over the ocean and the marsh, and also a bike path that leads to Nauset. It can be a bit buggy on those walkways due to the marsh just fyi. There's tons of accessible parking. In fact it's only accessible and resident parking available at the lot right by the beach. My only complaint is that while there's lots of accessible parking, the lot is pretty far away from the entrance to the beach. As someone who can walk, but not for longer distances without a break, it's a bit frustrating. I wish there was at least a drop off point, but there's only a sign that reads "no drop offs at anytime. I've read they have beach wheelchairs in season, but there were none available at the time I was there.

This amazing beach is one of those places that makes me so happy every time I visit…read more I have lived all over the USA and been to a lot of famous beaches, but this one will always be in my top 5. This is my favorite beach on the whole Cape too. LeCount Hollow adjoins equally beautiful Cahoon Hollow Beach, the parking lots are a very short drive from each other. You will have an identical experience at either of these beaches and I recommend both. This beach reminds me a bit of some of the beautiful California beaches that I have been to with it's majestic dunes. I love how you feel like you are removed from civilization when you are down on the beach. So peaceful being here, especially before the Cape's peak tourist season begins. The biggest negative is the very large dune you have to walk up and down to access the beach, this is especially challenging with loads of beach gear. This past summer nearby Cahoon Hollow has some serious erosion troubles with the dunes. Also, paying to park is quite steep, but if you come in the off season it is free. Luckily they do have actual bathrooms here, not just the grimey porta potties.

Be ware that you will need to go down a steep sand pathway to the beach. It's not really the going down part but the going back up. We saw plenty of people having to stop multiple times on the way back up because it is tough. There are lifeguards on duty until 5pm and the crowds weren't horrible because one needs a parking sticker to enter the beach. On the on-season there is someone stopping all the cars going in to make sure they had the appropriate parking sticker.

This is a beautiful park overlooking the water at the end of Commercial street, away from all the…read morehustle and bustle of the business stores and restaurants. It's a great place to sit and watch the clouds, stroll around the grassy areas, or just have a picnic on the lawn. There are several benches under mature trees that are great for just resting and chilling. The park is not very big but there's a plaque commemorating the landing. There is limited street parking around the area.

There are a few benches to sit, with some shade trees overhead. There is a large cement area with names inscribed, and a 4ft high monument with historic info. Just not the prettiest park around, though it is clean and maintained. When visiting the Provincetown causeway you can stop by here and check it off your bucket list.

The beech forest trail is a trail around a pond. For walking. The bike trail passes by here. But…read moreyou can't ride bikes on this trail. Large parking area (great place to start your bike ride) plus facilities. When you first start the trail, you start on a board walk next to the pond. If you bring sunflower seeds (the bird food kind) - put some in your hand, palm open, then stand really still, palm extended. Within minutes you will have chickadees and nuthatches landing on your hand to eat!

Out of all the beaches in the outer Cape area, this has quickly become our favorite. They have…read morerestrooms, changing rooms, and showers very close to the beach. The beach area is so clean and never too crowded the times we have gone. Like previous reviews have mentioned, it really does matter when you go here--if it's during low or high tide. As I love to scour the beach for sea glass, low tide is best. During high tide, the sandy beach area does become a little smaller, but don't worry plenty of room to still put down your beach towel and/or umbrella. Starting Memorial Day weekend, they do start charging $25 per car. Or if you're on a bicycle/and or walking to the beach, then it's $15. Luckily, we went prior to Memorial Day, so entry was still free.

Could Dune Shacks Trail be the 8th wonder of the world? I don't know man...but I feel like it is…read more When hubs located these dunes as part of our nature escape in Ptown, I was like...."ok" and shrugged my shoulders. But once we started ascending on a narrow sand path leading to the tallest peak, all we saw was a stretch of pure gold and imagined some desperate soul running frantically looking for water. Even with the frigid late December visit here, make sure you bundle. Hiking on sand was difficult especially since we wore denims- but definitely wear leggings or joggers to get the most mobility as you hike up. We didn't prep ourselves mentally- so once we got to that tallest peak, we came back down and never saw past the end of the dune and into the ocean. Dune Shacks could well be that place that combines the dune+beach beautifully together. What a dramatic and lovely place to visit. If you're into the breeze rustling your hair and really sinking your boots in the sand, this spot's for you.

I came across this trail while planning our trip to Cape Cod. I liked it because it had some sand…read moredunes (cool) and I thought it would be cool to see the dune shacks. Unfortunately, I had no idea how high the dunes were! If you've never climbed a sand dune before, let me tell you - it's not easy! It's exhausting as for every step, your foot sinks down at least half way back from where it started. The sand starts fairly soon after the trail begins and you're soon trekking uphill in sand. We made it up to the top of the first dune and 2 of the 3 of us were beat. I took great lengths to stay as high in elevation as possible in making my way to the second dune, where I saw the ocean and maybe two dune shacks in the distance - at least half a mile or a mile away. I couldnt imagine walking that far in the sand. Overall, the trail was nice and it gave some nice views, but be prepared and know going in that its not going to be easy.
