Blue Heron Landing Campground - RV park

For my short trip to Point Pleasant, West Virginia at the beginning of April in 2023, I had…read moreactually booked another campground who called me while I was in route to West Virginia to tell me that their bathrooms had been vandalized and there were absolutely no facilities available not even a porta potty leaving me no choice but to scramble to find another campground while on the road. Enter Blue Heron Landing to the rescue! Blue Heron is open all year round however their tent camping is sectioned off by the small river and they had not yet moved a potta potty to the river for the late night convenience of hardcore tent campers like me. The owner was so sweet to voice her concerns for me due to April's still chilly temperatures but she felt much better after I let her know I pitch tents in Wisconsin in October. Still worried about a lengthy hike to the bathroom facilities, she gave me an excellent spot with direct access to the cleanest bathrooms/showers I have ever seen! And for reference, I camp all over as a traveling festival performer. The owner also let me set up late after closing which I really appreciated as my travel time had been set back when I had to pull off the road to research a replacement facility last minute. The owner's son came up to my campsite to collect the fee. He politely introduced himself and kept a respectful distance so not to scare me as I set up. I really appreciated that small gesture to make me feel safe. I had gone to West Virginia to scope out Point Pleasant to see if the September Mothman Festival might be a good fit for me. If I decide to add it to my festival circuit the only place I'll stay is Blue Heron Landing. While it certainly wasn't the other campground's fault that they couldn't accommodate me, Blue Heron Landing went above and beyond.

Great water pressure, we used a pressure regulator. Nice small dog park. Decent free wifi and great cable. Lots of activities. There are lots of longterm or permanent residents here. Office staff were so helpful. If coming from Exit 28, I-64 West, the entrance from Hwy 60 into Fox Fire Rd is a right 180 degree turn (very sharp right turn) so give yourself plenty of room. Great place to stay overnight or longer.

This is not an exaggeration. My husband and I walked around the park and from what we observed we suspect at one point many of the pull thru sites may have once been single sites split into two to maximize the park's potential profit. Nice for them but not great for the occupants. Dumpsters are located at the back of the campground which is inconvenient if you're staying in a site near the front. Although the pamphlet does say if "you're leaving in a rush" at the end of your stay you can leave your sealed up trash bag at the end of your site to be picked up. The sites are mostly level but the one we stayed in had that kind of minimal incline that cause you to roll forward just enough to make hitching up a pain. The "upgraded" sites with patios are a bit messy looking. In fact. many sites overlook a neighbor to the campground who appears to be a hoarder so that isn't the most pleasant view if you're vacationing. Although the campground can't control what the neighbor does on their property it would be nice if they invested in a fence along that side of the park to make it look tidier. On the positive side, they did have a couple of little ponds that look pretty well suited to some light recreational fishing but didn't look as appealing for swimming. They have lots of pull thru sites which is convenient for quick stopovers and they are located near a major highway (but be prepared for some road noise). It's also really nice that they're open year round. We didn't have a lot of interaction with the staff but when we did they were cordial. In summary, it's a decent campground that meets the basic needs of a traveler but I would use this more as a layover campground than a destination. Overall would probably rate it about 2.5 stars. 3 stars ranking it against a regular campground but only 2 stars comparing it to KOA's.

The far back part of the lake there is this Old Historical (re-enactment ) fort called Fort Randolph. This is pre Colonial time frame in the 1730's when the land was being newly discovered and the likes of Daniel and Squire Boone was running around the woods chasing and running from Indians. The fort is pretty good size and it is opened during re-enactment times only for tourist. We walked around the fort and I was able to get some really nice shots. There is also a homestead log cabin and behind the cabin there is a Indian Village with oval shaped wigwams and other items re-enacting a Indian Encampment. There was a lot of Canadian Tourist waddling around and flapping their wings aka arms around. Very noisy honking tourist voicing their opinions on the park. This is also a campground also where people not only camp during peak season but off season too, by the looks of some of the lots I think they live there year round. At Lake Krodel there is paddle boats, docks and you can fish, picnic and bring your own canoes and kayaks to enjoy the day with the kids. Picnic tables with shelters and playground equipment. It's a very lovely Free park to enjoy with the kids and family!!!
