Ran into this market by accident. I don't live in the neighborhood, but after a summer dinner at Francis Burger Joint across the street, ran over for some tomatoes and apples. The store is clean and stocked, the staff was friendly and I really like the fact that it's a stand alone -- not connected to a big chain. You'd think the prices would be higher, but no. I stopped into Longfellow Market on a Thursday morning while I was out and about. There's a free private parking lot with plenty of space. The market is small relative to a chain grocery store but they offer all necessities from bread to dairy to frozen foods. I purchased a half pound of white bread, it was great because these were being put out as I was there! It's also from a local bakery, yum! Is it just me or are half loaves rare but also genius?! This is a great market. The staff are friendly. The selection of items available awesome. And while I still tend to go to my coop for most of my organic veggies, this place always surprises me with everything else. I'll give three highlights: 1) Saturday in the summer months you'll find the outside grill running with deals on dogs, brats, ribs and juicy Lucy's with the juicy Lucy's setting you back only $4 a pop. 2) They'll have condiments I won't be able to find anywhere else. Large bottles of Tiger Sauce. 6 pack thingies of brown eggs. Buttermilk in a small container cause seriously, who needs a lot of buttermilk? And my best find yet? Thai chili ketchup. Delish! 3) Their deli and meat counter is great. From sides to rotisserie chicken to house made brats and stuffed chicken breasts. Their meats are all prepared in back. And while I said three, there needs to be a fourth: 4) Paul the butcher. He will take care of you. You need a custom order? Let him know. You have a brat from someplace that was amazing? Let him know and they may try to recreate it. Anyway, the place is a thankful addition to the neighborhood. read more

I got here about 4 times a week because I live only a block away and just like getting things fresh in small purchases. I know some of the staff by name and almost always have a pleasant experience. I think the produce/meat is def above Cubs but maybe not quite Wedges quality(close tho). Anyways, for a fairly small spot they have a pretty great selection and pretty much find whatever I need easy. Good spot. read more

I was optimistic about this grocery store as it's exciting to have such convenient access to groceries in the neighborhood. Unfortunately what I walked into was a sea of confusion and disappointment. The first issue is the layout of the store. Having stepped into some hundreds of grocery stores in my life time, they all have a marginally predictable layout. There are some major issues with Longfellow market that make it complex to find basically anything. The second issue I see is that the service can be hit or miss. I have some positive interactions and some that fall short. I don't feel a sense of community in the store, something this local spot could sorely use. The worst issue by far though is the six times i have purchased produce that was rotten or inedible! How? It is beyond me. To cut into an onion or garlic only to find it is rotten and moldy on the inside is an awful feeling. This seems like the most basic issue that if not addressed will leave this grocery store accumulating dust! Please fix your produce and own up to the issue, then notify us whether there has been a change. I still come here for the convenience of certain items but will never buy anything that could be spoiled. read more

I recently moved into the neighborhood and was so excited to have a grocery store near by. After a few visits, I will never return. The produce I have purchased from this grocery store has been rotten! Peppers, garlic, tomatoes, apples... all rotten or moldy! And this doesn't even include the items we don't purchase that are visibly wilted. I can't believe this hasn't been addressed. What a great little market1 They have all the staples, a lot of "shure fine" products to offer alternatives to the more expensive advertised brands, a great selection of UNIQUE products...they had a little Kronos gyro kit which made 3 lamb and beef gyros, imported from Greece! They also had Kronos chicken gyros kit! For pizzas, they carry many, but I was particularly glad they carried Chicago's own Home Run! I also got some kind of crazily delicious salted caramel brownie-like bars which were SO addictive. I was on vacation and didn't want to do a lot of cooking, so these were great things to grab. They have a hot food deli with roasted chicken (choose whole or pieces) and was able to make a dinner of two chicken breasts, mashed potatoes and gravy. Everything was fresh and tasted great. I wasn't needing produce or meats on this trip, but I quickly glanced and they seemed to have everything. I could see this store being a very convenient main smaller grocery store for the neighborhood. I see some are comparing it to Cub and Seward Co-op...It's not at all comparable, but in a class all it's own...a small, neighborhood grocery store. Not as cheap as huge Cub, not as expensive as Seward Co-op, I'd go to all three for completely different purposes. I see some negative reviews here, and really cannot understand why. Seems some people don't get that it is meant to be a small, in and out grocery store...and it delivers that in a clean and comfortable atmosphere. read more

I live on 39th ave. and as foodies, our household was stoked to see a grocery pop up on our street. We love that Minneapolis offers such a wide variety of co-ops and local food options. We imagined something great when we heard about Longfellow, and its nostalgic appeal. Unfortunately, the only thing nostalgic about Longfellow Market is the fact that the options available are so 1995. By that I mean the local, organic options are minimal, and those that are available are overpriced. The cute outfits don't mean anything unless you can deliver a solid historic experience. I don't mean a lack of refrigeration, but I would like to see a better selection of whole and local foods. This is a chain like grocery with a mask. The only reason I gave two stars instead of one is location. I will continue to go out of my way to support the Seward store. This is a missed opportunity, Longfellow. read more

First time yesterday cuz we are moving to the neighborhood. Deli area looks cool, fresh grabs, meat looked nice and had local choices. I found everything I wanted and staff were conscientious. I usually go to Seward Coop, but this is closer to my house and I am glad they have some conventional items I need at times. I will def be back. read more

Never again. This place has finally lost me for good. This time I mean it. The cashiers suck. They are trying to push you into bagging your own. The place isn't set up for it. Then they dowl out the bags like they are made of gold. They stuff as much as they can into ascfew bags as they can.. It is always a little like Russian roulette getting to your car then into your house without your bag handle falling off and your stuff all over the ground.. When they do bag your stuff it like they are doing you some kind if great favor. There prices are so high if I wanted to bag my own I would/will go to Aldis. Price are more in line for bagging your own at Aldis and they are set up to do it. Then I also agree with many of the other reviews in the you never know what you will get when you get your produce home. Never had so much rotten stuff. read more

From the layout, lighting, and hardwood floors, Longfellow Market looks like a lovely new co-op or natural grocery store...until you see the Hormel sausage sampler platter and Lunchables. And just to clarify - I love my Hormel's Corned Beef Hash, and will definitely indulge in an occasional Lunchable ( yay nostalgia!), so nothing's wrong with that. Longfellow Market is exactly what its name says: a market in Longfellow. It's not a corporate beast like Cub, Rainbow, or Target, nor is it a small corner-store grocer that's going to jack up their prices because when you're craving that post-drink-a-thon Vitamin Water, you'll give up your first born - it's a welcome return to the local, neighborhood food market. The hot food counter had the typical stables: Americanized Chinese, mac and cheese, fried and rotisserie (?) chicken with various sides; the deli counter had a nice small selection of cold cuts and cheeses; the meat and seafood counter looked well-stocked and fresh (although I've never heard of their meat and seafood supplier). The produce looked colorful with a nice variety to choose from, but some of the bulk salad greens looked a little sad...maybe the temperature is too cold. The canned/grocery goods were all well-stocked with decent prices and a good amount of options. Also, bulk section = win. My biggest complaint was the lack of local products from a local grocery store. Yes, I know Spam and Hormel are local, thank you for the tags reminding me of that, but c'mon really? There are so many amazing local grocery goods, and being on Lake Street, there's fantastic opportunity to really supply and support fellow local businesses. A missed opportunity, but one that can easily be fixed. I don't know if there's enough of a draw for me to get my groceries from Longfellow Market (I'm close but not THAT close), but those nearby have a great and useful new addition to the neighborhood. read more

This is the happy middle between Seward and Cub. A very happy middle. We love the selection and we're continually surprised and delighted by the things we find in store. It's not giant so we can get in and out quickly. We used to go to Seward for everything but sometimes you need Kool-Aid or Cool Whip or other cool type things. This saves us a trip, it's a local business and we can get our standard hippie stuff when we want and opt for more processed stuff when we want as well. Also, points to the cashiers and deli staff for being friendly and helpful. We want to make this our regular store and have started calling it The Market. read more

Disappointed with my experience. Recently moved to the neighborhood and was hoping to make this a "go-to" spot, but that's not going to happen unless product quality and service changes. Particular issues were: Produce: Walked through the produce section, and some items were so bad, I couldn't believe they were even for sale. Labeling was somewhat confusing too, so I wasn't sure which product was which. Service: Had a very odd experience in the check-out line. I was two patrons back in line, and the patron being rung up essentially scolded the cashier for not helping her bag her groceries. Meanwhile, the cashier seemed to be in some sort of trance while the patron spoke to him. I'm still not sure what the store policy is on bagging, because the next patron had to bag their own groceries too, however, the cashier bagged mine for me. Either way, the check-out process is rather inefficient because the "staging" area is so small after an item has been rung up. Hence, everyone in line has to sit and watch the patron at the end of the aisle bag his/her groceries (assuming the policy is to self-bag) since there isn't enough room to start ringing up the next person's groceries. Giving it 2 stars instead of 1 since the product selection is somewhat wide, so if you're looking for packaged food in an emergency, you will probably find what you need. read more

I like that this place has some lesser common staple options like Grassmilk, Beeler's ham etc... But many times I have gone here and one of two things happens. 1.) They are out of stock (or discontinued -Like the against the grain pizza) of the things I specifically went there for, and I end up having to drive to the co-op in Seward anyway. 2.) The meat and produce I purchased expired THAT DAY, or was noticeably expired/rotten before the expiration date posted. This has happened several times with organic greens. And one time the chicken smelled awful the same day I purchased it. So now I just drive to the co-op because 50% of the time I will have to go there anyway. read more

This nice little locally owned grocery is right in my guy's neighborhood so I have walked there a few times to pick up some last minute ingredients for cooking. The store is very clean and well organized and has a decent array of meat, dairy, produce and non perishables. If you are looking for frozen meals stuff, the selection is small. But this place is all about convenience. With that said, you won't get the best prices on stuff but you are supporting a local business and have the convenience of simply walking to the store when you need something quick. They do have a decent selection of organic foods if you are health conscious (with a price premium). I have never had to wait to check out and the clerks and staff that work there are very friendly and helpful. This place reminds me of the little mom and pop grocery that used to be down the street from me (sadly they couldn't make it) but I think this place will be here for years to come! Oh, and if you are looking for a great inexpensive food fix, check them out on saturdays. They grill juicy lucy burgers, brats, hotdogs and ribs in the parking lot and prices are great! read more

I got a secret. I don't have to go to Seward to get bread from St. Agnes Baking Co. I've now tried the marble, whole wheat, and black Russian. I've been 3 times now. The first time on a sale display was Sweet P peach pie. It could have passed a blind taste test for homemade. I picked up a fruit cake. Someone mentioned you can get things here that you can't find anywhere else around. I found that also. Blue Wave Seafood brand has the most delicious frozen butterfly breaded shrimp. I got that twice. In the bread section is also from Grandma's bakery in WBL. They carry Hostess coffee cake which is almost a square version of the beloved Drakes Cake on the east coast, that MN seems to have an aversion to. You'll find random sales all over and I got one on Elliott's bacon. I found out a little goes a long way with Karl's turkey base. I discovered Earl's cheese puffs, OMG. One of the best things was the party Havarti tray. Huge slices of dill, plain, and jalapeno, that I haven't seen anywhere else. It's funny how Susannah H. thought it looked so modern with the hardwood floors. To me that was a giveaway to a 70's timewarp. And I get that feeling every time. Twice when I was there they were playing Gloria by Laura Branigan, and it fit, and sounded great. One day I hope I step back in time, go up to the counter and get tavern loaf. read more

Have you been to this Market Lately? I drove by the store a few weeks ago and the parking lot was jammed, people were parking up and down the street so I had to stop to see what was going on. Apparently they have changed over the store. They now pride themselves on delivering local Minnesota products as well as a wealth of natural and organic foods. The store is laid out beautifully - It has the old time feel to it. They have new signage and the isles are well market and you feel like you are in a real grocery store. Other than their cool selection of locally grown products one thing really sticks out about this store is their service. The people who work their are professionals - You can actually talk to the butcher, the produce guy or the dairy guy and not some kid wearing a T-Shirt and ripped up jeans who can't wait for their shift to end. The staff at Longfellow are very knowledgeable and are eager to help with questions, locate what your looking for and even offer to order what they don't have for you. You will even find the owner "Joel" walking the isles and is always delighted to talk to you or help with any questions. My favorites at the store are: - Stuffed chicken breasts, fresh from the butcher - Homemade Brats and Jerky from the butcher - Homemade Breads - Buddy's Nut Butter (Honey Peanut) - Selection of Fresh and Natural Produce - Farmhouse Kitchens Hand Rolled Butter - Gray Duck Chai (Burnt Sugar+Ginger) - Bulk seasonings and grains - Natural Yogurts To top off the service, when you get through the check out line they will even ask if they can help take your groceries out to your car. This place is now the real deal - Family owned, with local, natural and organic products. In my opinion the co-op up the street is going to be in trouble. I just came from my first visit to Longfellow Market. I had the pleasure of meeting the proprietor Joel Ahlstrom formerly of Riverside Market. Seeing the wonderful store and meeting Joel was such a pleasurable experience that I am going to redirect 100 percent of my grocery purchases to his business. Everything the old neighborhood markets "used" to be you will find here and most importantly smiling employees who are obviously happy to see you. I actually like going to this store & that's a big deal for someone who hates grocery shopping. The parking lot is not insane (think Trader Joes, Cub), and it is rarely busy. Also, more than ever, I want to support local, family owned businesses. I don't mind paying a bit more when I know my money is going to support local and honestly, many of their items are not that much more compared to other stores in the area. It's not easy being a small grocery store with all the big box and Amazon competition. The only thing that would take it to the next level is if they carried Inspired by Happiness products. They take Gluten Free to the next level and I have to shop at Fresh Thyme to buy them. I'd really like to JUST shop at Longfellow. This is the only grocery store in town that doesn't stress me out! GREAT customer service -- I had a problem with a mistake I made in purchasing something and they handled it so nicely, that alone will bring me back, I like them a lot, their produce has improved and the meat department, as other yelpers have said--is really good. I do wish they had better baked goods. Their bread is all generic commercial stuff, and I think if they partnered with a local bakery they could sell something, umm...edible? OK, well, I'm a bit of a bread snob but I would like to see perhaps Rustica or some other local bakery sold here. Prices are really pretty good...lower than say Kowalskis or Lunds, but of course it's not Cub. Or, ahem--Aldi's? But then, you don't have to rent your shopping cart, either. Parking is a breeze (as in, I breeze in and then breeze out). I guess I'd like to see them carry a bit more organic stuff etc for all us ironic, bearded (yes, even the women) hipsters flooding longfellow these days. Positives: Longfellow Market is a small store with on and off-street parking. It's not crowded and easy to walk around inside. The meat counter and bulk sections are very good and I'm able to find almost everything I need. Management seems to be responding to neighborhood requests. The building is inviting with big Lake street facing windows and a door that meets the sidewalk. Negatives: The pre-made items at the deli counter can be bland. There's a lot to love about this little market. The atmosphere is great, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. For a market this size the selection is surprisingly good. In virtually every category you'll find the standard brands, as well as some nice upgrades - plenty of organics and gourmet lines. As for the reviewers here who complained about a lack of local options, I honestly don't know what they're talking about. In fact, local selections abound. Maybe if you're a "locavore" the mere presence of Folger's cancels out the fact that Longfellow also stocks the full line of offerings from Peace Coffee. I love the "old standbys" like Bush's baked beans and Kellogg's cornflakes, and I also enjoy the bounty of our local and regional farms and producers - I think Longfellow gets the mix just right. The meat counter is the real star at Longfellow. Unlike a larger store, you won't find a vast array of choices, but everything they offer is high quality, fresh and competitively priced. The house-made sausages are excellent, and specialty items such as the outstanding stuffed pork chops never disappoint. In the produce section they manage to stock a really nice variety in a small space. When they first opened, they struggled with freshness, always a challenge with produce, but they've been steadily improving in this area. I shop at Longfellow several times a week. (That's another thing I like about a smaller neighborhood market - the ease and convenience encourage me to do several smaller shops throughout the week, as opposed to the One Big Shop on the weekend. It's turned grocery shopping from a chore into something I actually enjoy.) The middle has fallen out of the Minneapolis grocery market in the aftermath of the great recession and Longfellow Market steps into the gap. Longfellow Market is an old style neighbourhood market that hits the right balance of affordability and quality. Its a smaller store with friendly staff and personalized service but big enough to shop for everything you need for the week. It's not a food desert corner store with jacked up prices, either. It has real food for real people. It's easy to bike to from the Greenway and has plenty of bike parking right out front and if you shop by bus the 21 line on Lake street will drop you off right in front. I like that it's locally owned and has local producers on offer. They carry Full Circle brand organic goods, which are far cheaper than other organic brands found at the coops and they also have SureFine generic for when you need to stretch your dollars. Their meat selection is tasty and affordable with brands like Creekstone Farms US, pasture raised, corn finished and humanely processed beef out of Kansas as well as Just Bare Chicken from Minnesota and Wisconsin, vegetarian fed and uncaged. Grass-fed, free range and 100% organic options are available, too (but for more $.) Still, it's nice to buy good meat at good prices and have money left over for other items like Minnesota based organic Snow-Pac frozen vegetables - buy in the 80 oz. packs and stock up! Their produce section is small but has a good mix of conventional and organic foods. Produce is the hardest thing to get right in a small grocery store (I know I used to work at one) but Longfellow Market works hard to keep freshness a priority and their prices are very reasonable. Longfellow Market is an excellent neighbourhood market and with the closing of Rainbow it's really the only mid-market grocery left in the area. Sure, you can get cheaper food at Cub and premium organics at the coops, but if you want both good quality at a good price and need to fill your cart for the week on a budget, Longfellow is the place to go. read more

A pitiful, expensive grocery store. It's gimmick is that it's an old neighborhood store, except that it's not-- it opened a year ago. I guess that if you mistakenly think it has been there 100 years you might shop there out of pity. No, it just doesn't have a good selection. It is also way overpriced and poorly laid out. If you are scared of poor people so you won't go in Cub down the street how about going to Seward--not that far away and with much higher quality products. Also, I have found the service to be really bad. Everyone I have ever met seems like they really don't want to be there. Cub & Seward cashiers are way friendlier and more competent. read more

Customer service has slipped considerably. Especially at the deli counter and check out. When I asked a deli clerk if the little bit of ham on offer was all they had, he told me they were too busy to cut more. I was the only customer at the deli. Check out clerks can be rude. I had one give me a hard time when I asked her to double bag my groceries. She actually rolled her eyes and said "you want THAT double bagged?" like she had never heard anything so ridiculous. Neither one of the clerks was young either and they should have known better. I hope they can turn it around. read more

I've only been to this market a handful of times; once when they first opened, and then a few others over the past year. Every time, I REALLY wanted to like it, but after my latest trip, I don't believe I'll be going back. While the deli and meat departments are, hands down, some of the best in the area, everything else falls between average and sub-par. The produce, every time I've gone, has been questionable at best. This last weekend I picked up a package of literally rotting celery. The dairy section is a step above that of your average corner mart. I realized recently that the bagels they sell in the section say specifically on the label that they have a four day shelf life after being defrosted. Based on the state of the produce, I would guess that they sit out much longer than four days before being purchased. Additionally, the whipping cream was about a week from expiration (in most stores you'll find whipping cream is sold 3-4 weeks from expiration) As far as sundries, there's nothing special, and the prices aren't any better than the Cub 8 blocks away. I'll take an Everetts or an Oxendales over Longfellow any day of the week. I know that I'm supporting local grocers, as well as receiving quality, fresh merchandise. This place appears to be poorly managed, and doesn't seem to be making any strides towards improving some pretty consistent weaknesses. read more

This place has gotten much better since it opened. It's still too expensive and the selection is limited but the deli is great and you can get in and out in a hurry. They are conscious about where their products come from and are always adding new products. I also like their gluten free selection.
