Do not consider this place if they require a 'meet and greet' with your dog. Their dog 'experts' are anything but knowledgeable. After waiting 2 1/2 hours to complete an adoption they finally told us we were required to bring our dog in to meet the shelter dog. Keep in mind, their website states the dog is good with other dogs and cats. When we talked to the folks at the desk, we were informed they didn't really know about the cat interactions. The dog approached a cat in a carrier, the cat hissed at her, the dog backed up and wouldn't approach the carrier again. That was the extent of her 'good with cats' evaluation. When we were informed, they had all kinds of requirements for our dog for the meet and greet. He was in an appropriately fitting harness, they required a collar, which he does not like collars because of trauma as a pup. They came into to cage area and would not listen to us about how our dog was trained. He is voice trained and interacts with other dogs very well. I had just spent time with the dog we wanted to adopt and had gotten her to stop jumping up on people and stopped her lunging. Smart dog that would fit into our household very well. As soon as the handlers showed up they encouraged her to jump up and her energy level went right back to where it had been. Their expert decided our GSD was being aggressive and started squirting him. When I asked her to stop and tried to explain the commands to use and that he was nervous with so many people around he was unfamiliar with (in an enclosed space) she told me our dog was the issue and that she wasn't harming him. Harming him, no, but she confusing the heck out of him. He didn't understand what she wanted. Again I tried to explain what he needs so he would understand the expectation. She called her ''supervisor" and long story short, we didn't bring the dog home with us. Don't get me wrong, I understand their need to protect their charges, but they also need to listen to people who know the visiting animal best. Add to that their 'hold' fee, which they accept multiple holds on each animal, the place is feeling like a puppy mill. We have adopted at least three pets from them over the past 20+ years. The Humane Society is Amazing as far as animals go but not as far as customer service goes. They are VERY rude and obnoxious especially when they sell you two very sick cats and don't tell you that they are going to die soon. One of the cats died just a month after (they gave this cat no medicine). I would not recommend!!! So I was trying to make an appointment on line and the receptionist kept calling and calling like 5 times a row until I answered I was on a very important business meeting. Very Rude and Hostile Like I did something to them and this is my second conversation with her (I wish I got her name she has a strong accent). Then one of the Vets called and was extremely rude as well saying that I adopted both cats and they were a bundle. I was like yes, I know he died. DONT ADOBT THERE!! My husband and I adopted a Maine Coon cat but three days after we brought it home, the cat was wheezing, coughing, and sneezing non-stop. The shelter only had a 24-hour vet clinic recommendation that would have paid for the vet's bill, but it was not open on weekends and the time to take it in across town was over. Afraid that the cat was dying, we quickly returned the cat to the shelter. They refused to reimburse our adoption fee, which was hundreds of dollars because the cat was a purebred. read more

This Humane Society does so much for the community and cares about the welfare of all animals. Those that work there, including volunteers, are always friendly and helpful. I don't think many people realize that animal shelters and rescues right now are extremely overwhelmed! It might be stressful on certain days at certain times here. For the Humane Society itself, I give five stars: we adopted our cat here and it was a smooth process. Everyone was friendly, the process was smooth and we had plenty of time to play with him before we decided to take him home. We enjoy coming here and always have a positive experience. As for the Well Pet Clinic: Our cat had a great experience and was always well treated. Be aware that the waiting room is small and all of the animals are together, so timid animals may find it frightening. This was the case for our dog. We brought our puppy to the puppy play groups, which were fine, but the vet visits were stressful. Our dog is timid around other dogs and didn't like the waiting room, and became so agitated that by the time she got to the vet visit, she was scared. They held her down to give her shots. Unfortunately now she's afraid of the vet, and now we're working with a "fear free" vet to undo her experience here. read more

I recently moved to Longmont, after the passing of my husband. After being here a month, my 17 year old (adopted from the Humane society) cat died. Since I don't have a local vet yet, I contacted the Humane Society for euthanasia, as well as cremation. I was told they only take "CURRENT CLIENTS". It doesn't matter that we've been donors over the years, volunteering and supporting the Humane Society. They wouldn't help me and my cat. My husband's will specified a $10,000 donation to them, but I won't be giving it to Longmont. Apparently, they take your donations, but won't help you when you need their services. Here is my review of Longmont Humane Society Pros: -A decent selection of cute furbabies Cons: -poor customer service/volunteers that can be very difficult to work with -high adoption prices, close to $300 My first visit here was a good one. I spent time doing a meet and greet with a kitty and had a decent volunteer to work with. The next few visits were poor. Asking details about a pet to adopt was like pulling teeth. Lots of miscommunication and conflicting answers from different volunteers was frustrating. They also did not honor the time frame for adopting and holding an animal that I was promised and surprisingly, the staff person wasn't kind about it. The staff is generally not helpful. They are reactive not proactive. You always have to initiate or ask for help or else you will continued to be ignored When an animal had a medical issue I couldn't get an answer specifically about what kind of issue it was. And this was an animal that I put a hold on. There's a lot people who smoke in front of the entrance. It's gross, unhealthy and occurs on a regular basis. I wish that there were more options in thia area aside from this place. read more

This place loves to use their incompetent demeanor to swindle you out of your money. They mistake other animals you put on hold, and don't tell you if there is already a hold on the animal making you waste 30 bucks a pop every time with the excuse of that it isn't refundable or transferable. I had not been here before. If you are taking your cat to the clinic BE WARNED. There are dogs all around the very tiny waiting area, barking and lunging, two of them trying to fight and even scaring me. One dog lunged at my cat in the carrier and freaked him out. I left, to avoid further trauma. I was only there for a rabies shot. Now back at home my cat is freaking out at every little sound, and even when I try to pet him. He is a brave and outgoing cat, but that environment is HORRIBLE for a cat. They need to warn cat owners that you will wait 30-45 minutes for your shot, during which time your cat will be terrorized due to being surrounded by barking, aggressive dogs. During the episode where the 2 dogs were trying to fight, even with the intensity of that, no one on the staff said a thing- like 'take your dog outside now'. That is a rough environment for cats, dogs and people. read more

Leaving only one star, because it is required for this review. There are SO MANY things that I can say about this place that is supposed to be a safe haven for animals. First of all, the "Management" or lack there of is absolutely horrible. Not one smiling face in that place. If I am correct, tax dollars fund this humane society. The staff is rude, and there are alot of cross communication issues between all of them. I was yelled at today by a worker making it a hostile environment. I feel absolutely terrible for the animals there currently. Not one happy dog. I would like to hear from a person in charge, if there is one. I'm reading the previous reviews from others and indeed there are a few things from each 1 star review that the facility itself could improve on but to be honest it's never a 1 star. My family and I very much love our humane society! My daughters and I visit 3-4 times a month and check out the cutie pies that are looking for forever families! I even had my pup vaccinated there. However they did inform me if I choose to not neuter my dog that they wouldn't see my dog in the future. I was a little upset about that but can also respect their side and of not wanting MORE animals that have the possibility of being in the same situation ALL the current animals are in and hoping for a home. The hours Monday through Friday are 12-6 and Saturday & Sunday 11-6. When you first walk in the front desk is directly in front of you. The pups are on your left hand side and the kitties are on the right! Either way you decide there will be special eyes balls watching you! I always start to my left. I grew up in Longmont and the old building which is the current building, grew a lot. I like the old way were it was just a fence between the human and animal but no there is a gap and glass. I can't say how the dogs feel but I almost think they would be more calm if they could smell the people looking to love them. My family has been going to LHS Well Pet Clinic for several years. Their entire staff has always been incredibly thorough, compassionate and kind. They go above and beyond to make sure our pets are well cared for. We have had several surgeries done on three different dogs. I feel obligated to write a (delayed) review of Longmont Humane Society because it's where I found my best friend! Last 4th of July, we adopted Barnaby (formerly Ricky) from here. I'm eternally grateful to the employees and volunteers who make this place run and give deserving animals like Barnaby a second chance. The humane society was clean, well staffed, and thorough. When I went there to look at Barney, I found out he already had a hold on him. I was really disappointed and placed a second hold. Although they told me they don't do this, I got a call later in the day from one of the staff members to tell me that the first hold had fallen through and I was welcome to come pick him up if I was still interested. This meant a lot to me because they knew just how much I was interested in him and went above and beyond. Although I had a great experience, there are two things that I feel like I should touch on. On their website and his adoption papers, Barnaby was rated as being okay with dogs, cats, and kids when we in fact have spent the past year working on his leash reactivity to other dogs and he doesn't do great around cats. The adoption counselor was clear that he hadn't actually been tested around dogs, cats, or kids (he was stray) and that this determination was made from his overall demeanor but I think it's important that potential adopters are aware of this. Second, Barnaby was neutered while at the humane society. After we took him to the vet and found out he was having an allergic reaction and minor infection from the glue stitches from his surgery that had likely been going on while he was still at the humane society. They ended up having to redo his stitches and I'm sure they are busy but I do feel as though there could have been a post-surgery check up so he wasn't in discomfort for so long. Despite this, I'd highly recommend anyone looking for a new pet to check out the Longmont Humane Society. I feel like they genuinely do their best to care for the animals under their care and find a good match between potential adopters and pets. read more

The LHS is a mess. The process they use to visit/adopt the animals is broken, inefficient, unorganized and requires hours (many) of your time. You stand in line over and over again. You wait 30 to 40 minutes to visit the animal and wait another 30 to 40 minutes to give the animal back...that doesn't include the wait time while you are standing in line. They are not understaffed, they have employees and volunteers everywhere. The problem is, no one knows what anyone is doing. There are 5 people doing the work of 20...everyone else is walking around or sitting in the office. The manager came out of the office to berated the receptionist because she keyed information wrong in the computer (it was her first day). With a culture like that I can see why this organization is poorly run. I would recommend the Boulder Humane Society or the Denver Dumb Friends League they are both well run organizations. read more

She not only interacted with me under the assumption that I must be complete idiot, incapable of comprehending her higher understanding of things, she talked about how green and stupid the rest of the vets were compared to her. I would give a zero - they refused to spay my dog because I have another unspayed animal. They did not tell me that when booking the appointment. In addition due to poor maintenance my wife fell in the parking lot and injured herself. Felt like welfare for pets - more about pushing an agenda then giving good vet care. read more

Gorgeous No-Kill Shelter The Longmont Humane Society underwent a renovation last year and you wouldn't believe how nice this shelter is. The dogs are not kept in cages, but have small rooms with glass. Volunteers walk the dogs every day. Large gated outdoor play areas allow you to meet and observe a dog. Exceptionally clean. Takes a lot of dogs that are automatically put down by other societies which explains the abundance of pit bulls on their web site that have been there for a long time. Nicer than the Boulder Humane Society, and that's saying a lot. Good web site, though I guess in Megan W's case, they could be clearer about what was required for adoption for the sake of people that are driving from other areas. I donate treats to this shelter monthly and sometimes do find the women at the front desk a little frazzled and maybe not all that helpful. The shelter can be busy. Despite Megan's problems, I have to agree with their rules-they're doing the best for their pets. I've dropped off a dog here that I found wondering around town. They have nice " deposit boxes" that are open 24 hours a day and are inside and heated. Good idea to save dogs that might just be abandoned in the woods (or worse) otherwise. Easily the best shelter I've seen in Colorado if not the country-though I've only seen about half a dozen. Heard horror stories about many shelters but this place definitely deserves "humane" in its title. This is the age of social responsibility. Many dogs are being dumped by their owners because of the economy. We've adopted three cats over the years, and I think this facility does a great job of looking out for the best interests of the animals, which is refreshing given the puppy mills and pet stores that treat animals like commodities. I've tried adopting a dog, but they just didn't have enough of a selection the few times I looked so I went to a breeder for the dog...but cats are a breeze. My son volunteers here and they run a tight ship, teach the kids compassion and responsibility, and provide a great service to the community. Their new facility is really nice too! read more

They have removed all their breed labels in effort to increase adoptions of potentially dangerous breeds... Very disappointing :( as a mother, I feel this information is a right of adopters to know regardless of whether the shelter says the animal is family friendly... And regardless of breed... Some animals just aren't suitable to be family pets... But removing breed from the animals bio is dishonest and dangerous. There are plenty of shelters that are up front with adopters so they can know 100% what they are getting into...I am very sad to see that Longmont humane no longer is. I do not understand - less info to adopters to increase adoptions is NOT a safe policy, regardless of how much they want their dogs adopted out. This is a really great facility doing tons of great works. The place is really clean and well maintained. The animals have space, there are fenced pens outside, and lots of space outside for people to play with and get to know the pets. The people who work at the reception desk, do help in letting you know about the temperament of the dogs, which shows everyone there cares and works with the dogs. They hand you a little baggie of treats when you take a dog out. They end visitations about 30 mins before closing time. read more

I'm not too happy with the Longmont Humane Society. The younger staff are not very pleasant or helpful, all of their dogs are "mix." What?!!! Doesn't that place have anyone that can identify a dog breed? I also don't feel that they know their dogs as well as they should, since almost all are pit bulls (someone should tell them the breed) and it does matter when homing the pit bulls to families with young children, what their history is and really work and spend time with them during the evaluation. read more

I absolutely love my dog and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world, but the adoption process (and the lack of staffing) was absolutely ridiculous. We popped in on a Saturday after seeing the cute little critter online. We spent more than an hour walking around the grounds and hanging out with him. We knew instantly that he was the one, but wanted to get a better sense of his personality. There was already a hold on him set to expire at about 5pm that day. We added ourselves to the list, paid the fee, and agreed to call in later that evening to find out if the hold expired. Moments before I was set to give them a call that afternoon, one awesome staffer beat me to the punch with the good news that the dog of our dreams was ours to adopt the following day. My partner and I spent the evening bopping around town, picking up everything and more to prepare the house for our new bestie. The following day, we showed up shortly after they opened. We checked in, started the adoption process, and were told to go sit in a waiting room while they got him ready and finalized the paperwork. We sat there for over 2 hours with only one set of adoptees ahead of us. We routinely walked by his pen to see if they had moved him out, and yet the bulk of that wait time was spent with little to no progress. Whenever we stopped by the front desk to get a sense of why this was delayed, we were always met with "10 more minutes" - a response that turned out to be a gross exaggeration. We were totally prepared for a wait, and would gladly kick back and await our turn if it meant other families were finalizing their own adoption paperwork. Instead, the space seemed understaffed - and the delay was caused by a misprioritization of time. Staff seemed more ready to assist folks interested in meeting dogs than those who were actively trying to adopt. I am sure that it's a complex balance, but I really thought the end goal was to get the dogs adopted, not to get them socialized, yeah? This Humane Society is doing good work, but the whole experience put a damper on an otherwise momentous day. read more

As far as humane societies go, this one does a good job. It has an exceptional amount of open space to let dogs run around in and let owners meet their new pets. I remember the service being friendly and informative, and the facilities good in size. While it doesn't quite rival the Boulder Human society with turn-over, nonetheless it still has one of the higher turn-over rates in the country, which is great for pets. I remember it being decently clean. Perhaps Colorado in general can be said to be a pet-friendly environment, or maybe I'm just being biased. read more

I have struggled with writing a review but I was so upset at the health of the dog I adopted that I'm going ahead and writing it now. My daughter went and bought a dog for me. You could see every rib bone. My daughter was told that he just had his last kennel cough shot. So I got him with my brother's dog and the next thing I know is that they both now have kennel cough. Through my new vet we had to give him 2 doses of antibiotics to get rid of the giardia. I love this dog with all my heart and am so glad to have him. I was just very upset when he had all of these issues. Breaks my heart to wonder how the other animals are doing. read more

I'll be the first to say I don't know if facemasks and social distancing are really helping beat back COVID-19. But I'm doing my best to follow guidelines in hopes they do. LHS has marked places on the floor of its lobby where people are supposed to stand to maintain social distancing and placed signs instructing people to stay on one side of Plexiglass barriers installed at the front counter. Colorado requires masks be worn indoors in public places, which LHS is supposedly enforcing. However, the day I went to adopt a cat (by appointment, due to COVID-19) I stood in line - on my marked space - behind a woman who had walked all the way up to the counter and was actually leaning against it in a space between the Plexiglass barriers, talking face-to-face with 2 LHS staffers about something. She was wearing her facemask as a chin strap, as was her daughter, who kept running around in front of me - sneezing. Experts say being exposed to someone with a COVID-19 viral load for ~10 minutes significantly raises your chances of viral infection. I was standing more than 6 feet away from the maskless chatterer, so I was probably quite safe, but after 5+ minutes I decided I was not comfortable in this situation because I am 55+ and it was clear that this visitor has not been concerned about taking COVID-19 precautions, meaning she and her daughter might be likelier than most to catch and spread the virus. So I left the building, knowing it would be too late to get back in as adoptions were ending soon for the evening. I intended to adopt the cat the following day. Unfortunately, she was adopted by someone else before I could get an appointment. Too bad for me. But boo on LHS staffers for not applying their own COVID-19 rules to all visitors equally. Just take down the ridiculous Plexiglass barriers, warning signs and social distancing marks on the floor, because they're only window dressing anyway. read more

The absolute worst staff. So rude. The first day we came here we were asking to make an appointment the lady who Answered the door was the absolute rudest she said no. And that they were booked full that day so I called to schedule one and they had 5 open slots for that day. Why lie? Was it just out of laziness? Whatever. So we go in for our appointment the next day and there was a nicer last who helped the people behind us schedule there appointment. Weird. While looking at the kittys they left us alone but as soon as we asked to visit with some the staff acted like we were asking for an outrageous thing. They put us in one of the rooms where we waited 30 minutes for them to bring the cat out to us. We decided quickly that this was the cat for us the proceeded to wait 2.5 hours for them to get the paperwork done. I asked if we could visit in the shop and the lady rudely remarked only if you are buying an animal. Overall wouldn't ever come back her glad we were able to save one kitty but next time we will go to bolder or literally anywhere else. I will give them 2 stars just cause the cages seemed to be clean. read more

Not too entirely pleased with the encounters I had today with some of the staff here. The animals and the volunteers were great, but as I said some of the staff was very stand-offish and rude. As a prior customer here, it made me almost not want to be one again. I am currently waiting for a cat and have him on hold, and when asked about him, the lady at the front desk was extremely rude, and walked away from me. As I returned again and noticed she wasn't there I politely asked Michelle about him and she was helpful. Sabrina, one of the trainers also was rude when I asked a few questions about a few other animals. I would definitely give a 5 stars for some staff and for the facility itself, but the "customer service" I received today, does not deserve 5 stars. read more

Went into their Well Pet Clinic today to get my puppy's nails trimmed. I had a good experience until it was time to check out. The lady at the counter says my bill is $30.00. I probably gave her a pretty weird look and informed her that I had only gotten one nail trim. She says yes it's 30. I asked to see the invoice and she shows me a bill that has $15 for the nail trim and $15 for a tech visit. On their website, it specifically says vaccinations, heart-worm tests and microchips are charged a $15 walk-in fee (nail trims are not mentioned in this) and the nail trim section says $15. I explained this to both of the workers working at the time, but they both said that is the correct price. Charging $30 to trim a dogs nails (especially at a "low-cost" place) is ridiculous! read more

back in august i was looking into adopting a kitten and they had a litter of tortie babies so me and my sister (my current legal guardian) went to look at them. we got there a little before they opened at 10:00 i met the cat we were later going to adopt and told the staff the sweetest lady at the front desk started on paperwork. they told us we could go get lunch and come back later but neither me or my sister had anything going on so we waited in the waiting room. they ended up getting pretty busy so we expected a delay this was around 11:30-12:00ish so i went up to the lady and she said she was working on it as quick as she could. we waited longer eventually both me and my sister got impatient around 1:00 we noticed people coming in after us were leaving with adopted animals before we did. i asked again if there was anything i could do to speed up the process and at this point she was very apologetic and said she was trying she was obviously very stressed so we didn't get upset this was 2:00 ish. we ended up leaving at 3:30. this was 5 and a half hours and $300 we spent here and i'm going to clarify that i'm not upset at the person processing the paperwork but the fact that she was managing the entire cat visiting area as well as processing adoptions. she was doing everything she could and handled it all very nicely but that poor girl deserved a partner for her and everyone else's sake. disappointed in this facilities management i expected 2-3 hours max. the cat is doing amazing we renamed her from piccolo to phoebe and she's living a great life with much love. read more

So disappointed. Scheduled an appt by phone and was told on the phone that appts had no time limit. "You can play with the kitty's as long as you would like, even to closing hours". This was nice to hear as it is a difficult decision and a life long decision. But with covid restrictions I completely understand time limitations. We arrived exactly at our scheduled time and were brought back and it was explained by a lady that we could walk through the kitty's and write down the ones we wanted to play with. We did just that and it took about 15 minutes to look at the kitty's, read the cards and choose our top 5 to play with. We went up to the front desk and the same lady went through the kitty's on our list and told us about them. This took some time as her computer was having issues and then a pet emergency came in through the front door that she immediately responded to. Once she came back went through the kitty's info it had been about 35 min before we were told to choose a play room and they would bring our first choice to us a little black kitty named Paxton. Paxton was great but this is a life long decision so we wanted to play with the others. We went up to the front desk and asked to see the next kitty in our list. A different lady brought the next kitty back and stated the "same rules apply". We hadn't been told any rules so we asked about them and that's when she stated we have a 45 min time limit. She didn't state any other rules other than that one. I explained to her that I was told differently on the phone and that it had taken some time to even start playing with the kitty's. She was not friendly or understanding. She did ask where I had received that information. But she was not apologetic that I had received wrong information. We played with another two kitty's and then we were told our time is up. There was only one other family playing with kitty's at the time. I had to ask for my Drivers license back and they never said thank you, goodbye or anything. I understand the time limit with covid restrictions. My disappointment is with the lack of kindness, politeness and understanding coming from staff considering they are trying to find forever homes for much needed animals. read more

We adopted a cat from LHS 3 months ago. Overall it was a very unpleasant and stressful experience. First, there was a long wait just to visit with the cats we were interested in adopting. Then a longer wait to process the adoption. The place was severely understaffed and the front desk staff that day was surly. At one point the volunteer at the shop felt so sorry for us waiting over an hour that she personally took a look into our application, which, apparently fell through the crack. We were in for a big surprise when we brought the cat home. We took her to two vets, who both said the cat was at most a year and a half old, not three years old, as we were told by LHS. We're elderly and would prefer an older cat that doesn't require lots of play time. LHS also told us this cat had no bite history. In fact she bites all the time! She goes after our toes when we are in bed, when we're walking down the stairs, when we sit and watch TV! She jumps to grab our fingers if we happen to lay our hand on the back of a chair or sofa. I'm sure it's play to her and we're her preys. But it's been a nightmare. We feel we're stuck with the cat, because they may euthanize her if we return her to the shelter. She was at LHS for two months, and it's impossible to imagine that she didn't bite until she came to live to us. So we're inclined to think LHS lied to us about this cat because they wanted to adopt her out so they could take in more cats. We also learned that this cat came from southern Colorado. Now, with staffing issue, why are they're taking in animals from outside the area? One of the current employees, in a review, expressed his/her surprise at the fee charged pet owners ($300!). Perhaps that's why. They really ought to focus on taking good care of their current animals by expanding their temporary quarters, as well as caring for animals in the area. For those of you who are interested in adopting a pet, we'd strongly recommend Boulder Valley Humane Society. It's much better run over there, with friendly staff and a relaxed environment. The cats are given a condo to roam, not in a cage. They don't make you wait forever just to visit with a cat (we can't say anything about dogs, since we didn't visit with dogs). The only downside is: most of the cats aren't interested in coming down from a high perch to meet visitors so you many have to just pick one you like and take him/her home to try out for 30 days (you can return a cat within 30 days if it doesn't work out; neither you nor the cat will have a black mark). read more
