The old market was very cramped and had poor lighting, and I was always reluctant to shop there. The new owners are much more friendly. The products are fresh and the selection is good. It's much better than shopping at Metro in terms of price and quality. My only complaint is that the shop is a little small and can get very crowded at peak hours. You can't really shop in one half of the shop because there is a line up of customers.

Sure, it's expensive, but the quality of the produce is consistently exceptional. You can always count on them to have a great variety of fresh salad greens, sweet vine-ripened baby tomatoes, delicious grape varieties (cotton candy grapes...yum), juicy berries and amazing stone fruit in the summer. They just seem to know where to source the most delicious produce year round. But it's also a specialty food shop. They have a nice selection of olive oils, pasta sauces, spices and tons of essentials, as well as dry goods. Plus they stock fresh juices, baked goods from some of Toronto's finest bakeries, and they even sell premium smoked salmon from Kristapson's. I love having a shop like this right around the corner! Once inside, their very neatly array of seasonal fruits and veg lead the way to their glassed in flower room at the back. This room contains some of the biggest and most gorgeous sunflowers that I have ever seen. Unlike most flower shops, Passion Fruits does not deliver. You can however, call ahead and get them to create a bouquet for you. My recommendation, pop in. See whats lookin fine and grab your daily 8 servings of fruits and veg while they package up your flowers (in whatever arrangement you want) while you wait. This place is spotless, very well organized (you can even pick up some olive oils and bulk items too). The soothing jazz plays while you decide on what to leave, not what to buy. If you are in the neighbourhood, grab your produce here, go across the street to Epi breads and grab a chocolate almond croissant. All, an excellent treat! Not to mention it's dirt cheap. I eat A LOT of fruits and veggies, which can get pretty pricey...thanks to Fruit King I can afford to feed myself :) And the good doesn't stop there. For such a tiny hole-in-the-wall market they still manage to have a great variety of produce. I should mention though that if you're looking for a fully stocked grocery you've come to the wrong place. However, they do carry things are difficult to find in regular groceries (for example, lemon grass...I can NEVER find lemon grass!). And you'll find other goodies besides fruits and veggies-- cheap spices, dry noodles, Asian cooking sauces, canned/jarred goods, dried fruit, etc. As far as service goes it's top-notch. The cashiers ring-in and bag your purchases at the speed of light. Fruit King is just plain delicious!

The inside of the store looks very similar to a Chinatown store setup, with a scale and 1 cashier at the front that quickly processes the transactions. It's true, there's no service provided here, and the area where they place the vegetable looks quite dingy but the freshness of their produce and price is what the 4 stars are for.

Since I have discovered it, I have purchased almost all of your fruits and veggies from Summers Best. I love this place. They always have a good selection of whatever is in season locally and as well as some staples that most people want all year round. In August and September I couldn't go wrong. I was only getting the locally grown fruits/veggies and they were fabulous. Now that it is getting later in the season and the local stuff isn't looking quite as good. I have started sampling other things and they have been nearly as good as the local stuff I was getting in the summer. Oh, also their flowers are nice and very reasonable priced. I can't tell you how the quality or pricing on anything outside of fruit, vegetables and flowers are because I haven't gotten anything else. But you certainly can get bread, cheese, eggs, milk and cereal from here as well.

Inside the lights are lower than in a big chain grocery store. They also sold potted plants and cut flowers. Prices are the same or slightly better than at a big chain grocery store. For example, I wanted to buy a bag of cherries. There were two prices, $2.99/lb and $4.99/lb. The difference was that the more expensive cherries were bigger in size. There were fruits displayed outside the store, like the cherries. When I was there, the cherries were in the shade. However, the temperature was 31C with humidex of 38C; are fruit affected by humidex? I suspect they are. But if the strong was shining o  it, I worry about the fruit getting over ripe. My cherries were OK for the $2.99/lb price I paid. At my first set of 25 cherries, one was rotten. The sweetness level varied from cherry to cherry. They sold all the typical fruit and vegetables, without having any Chinese vegetables or fruit. This is in Greektown, after all. It is best to use cash. There is a charge of $0.25 for debit, so that's acceptable. There is some minimum purchase for credit cards, but I don't remember the rules. There is no free WiFi.
