Unfortunately, we've been given no other option but to place a negative review on Passion Fruits and sister store, Savoury Tymes. My parents have been shopping here for years, mostly for the wonderful flower arrangements and, the odd time, some produce to stock the fridge. In the past few months, my wife had begun shopping more often, especially with the current COVID-19 situation, up until one week ago. On May 5th, for our second year anniversary, I purchased what began as a beautiful blue flowered hydrangea plant for my wife, which she loved. Until one week later, when she noticed webs and spider mites on the stems, which she proceeded to clean. ultimately, my wife decided to trim the entire plant as the webs had covered nearly all of the stems. My wife brought the plant along with the spider mite in a jar to the store to inquire about getting our money back, or at least an exchange for another plant that did not have any signs of insects. Dianna immediately offered to take the infected plant and provide us with an orchid, close enough in price to the $35 hydrangea we'd purchased only 10 days prior. Until her husband, Chen, the owner and ultimate 'decider,' arrived, and immediately squashed any such offer by his wife, Dianna, suggesting that "no free plant' would be offered since the hydrangea was being held in a pot that his store had never kept. My wife had no other choice but to leave the store (largely due to an impatient 2 year old who couldn't appreciate the situation). I later called Chen myself, asking him about the situation, and after a 30 minute discussion, Chen was adamant in accepting zero responsibility for the spider mite, challenging us yet again that 1) the plant did not come from his store based on the pot/container, 2) that we hadn't done a sufficient job in 'isolating' the plant from other plants 3) deflecting all blame that the mites were present when the plant was purchased, 4) that we'd waited too long to return the plant, 5) that my wife had cut too much of the plant to present to their supplier for reimbursement. I explained that we have always been very pleased with his products, aside from the plant, and were just looking for an exchange for a plant that did not have any signs of insects. In Chen's words, "I may be stupid, but there's no way in hell that I'll be giving you a plant for free"..."I'd rather go bankrupt than have customers like you". In the end, Chen's inability to accept any blame for the infected plant sold and suggestion that we did not purchase the plant at his store made the decision rather simple. This was an unfortunate turnout given our family's history with Passionfruits/Savory Tymes and considering it as over a $35 plant, but the lack of respect and appreciation for our business made us realize this was not a local seller worth supporting. I hope other customers don't experience the same, and hopefully Chen can learn to occasionally 'give back' to their loyal customers in the odd time their products are defective. Otherwise, I fear his projection of going bankrupt will happen sooner than he anticipates. Feel free to contact me anytime to discuss my experience with Chen and additional details of the insulting remarks he made during our phone conversation. Alexander read more
