Whereas when you purchase your jewelry from a shop like Castle, you'll be buying the actual value of the precious stones, metal, and workmanship. Although he said he would ring me when it is repaired. I did not receive a call. I rang his business more than once during the time frame to check the status, without answer. When I arrived at the end of the 2wk period he said it wasn't ready and to give him another hour. I returned the next day and found there wasn't a new clasp. He simply secured the loose pearl and did not clean the brooch before handing it to me in the same condition he received it, except the pearl reset. I distinctly recall requesting a clean (filigree gold), although I know it is the practice of jewelers to clean a piece after repair, as a courtesy. So I paid $30.00 plus tax for a pearl reset. We went into the store looking for a bracelet. The two sales people were extremely patient, answered all my questions, and most importantly, listened to what I like and didn't like. They then tailored what they showed me based on my tastes, not theirs. Of course I wound up buying a few more things than a bracelet and I couldn't be happier. Their selection and prices were great. Kay (Romeros Jeweler's / Kay Frances Designs) performs absolutely beautiful custom work. The…read morefinished products are very high quality and built to last a lifetime. However, working with her is an exercise in frustration. If you do not mind that she routinely takes an average of a year to complete an order, she does not communicate, the communications she provides are contradictory or that the finished product is 33% over her estimate then Kay Francis Designs is the place to go. Our most recent odyssey started February 8, 2025 when we sent a set of broken eternity bands to her for resetting. She provided an estimate dated February 18, 2025 and a 57% deposit was requested and paid on February 25, 2025. Regarding the high deposit on February 25, 2025 Kay stated "I have to use a different system now because I buy the metal not my jeweler. I save you money that way". We heard nothing from her so in late July 2025 we reached out for a progress update. On July 30, 2025 Kay stated "I need to be able to cover the platinum cost to finish. It's an additional $1500.00". On August 6, 2025 Kay stated "When a caster charges me for platinum it includes their alloy their time and they double their price to make money on their craft". Yet on February 25, 2025 she had stated "I buy the metal not my jeweler". If she had actually purchased the metal on or near February 25, 2025 the cost for platinum would not have gone up. Either she buys the metal or her caster charges her an up charge but not both. At this point the cost per gram of platinum was $589.04. Again, we received no feedback or progress updates so we reached out in December 2025 for a progress update. On December 22, 2025 Kay stated "I apologize for not keeping you informed. It's almost finished I will keep you updated so you will know when to expect delivery. Again, I apologize so very much." In February 2026 after no additional communication, we reached out again. Kay refused to continue communicating with us and asked us to communicate with her manager who is evidently her boyfriend. In late February 2026 he insisted on full payment prior to completion. We, naturally refused, as we had already provided a deposit and progress payments totaling 81% of her original estimate. Upon completion, April 18, 2026, a set of photos of broken stones was sent as well as a final invoice 33% above the original estimate including the cost of broken stones. I am not certain if it is customary for jewelers to charge for their errors (broken stones) but Kay Frances evidently does. I certainly recognize diamonds, while hard, are brittle and prone to damage during setting. The final tally is the project took over 14 months and was 33% over budget.
