It's been a few years since I've visited Lori's. Now that it's finally merged with Mim's into one big multi-room establishment there is still a separate identity for Lori's. The polished hardwood floors and wood tables and large windows give it a modern sleek look which seems to be the trend for coffee bars motif in this decade. This is a huge improvement from the old Lori's. I did have my usual brewed of dark roast and found it one of the best. I actually complimented the barista on the roast who didn't reveal any secrets but did say, "we make it strong". If you haven't been here for awhile give it a try as it's a perfect place for studying, working or just contemplating your life so far. This is more of a walk up place so there is no parking lot and since this is across from the campus you'll have to park well down the block of the many neighborhood street to the West. **Still great coffee but no longer good selection of pastries and fresh baked cookies. Lori's is not a fancy place, so if you go in expecting a top-notch gourmet cup of espresso, you're probably going to be disappointed. But that doesn't mean Lori's isn't worth stopping in. Here's what I love about Lori's: 1. It's an affordable, local small business that's essentially "on campus." I'd much rather spend my money here than on the overpriced coffee in the student center. 2. It's a community hub. People come here to share time with neighbors and classmates. There are plenty of regulars and the staff gets to know you and won't hesitate to pull out some recent photo and tell you a story. 3. THE SOUP. They have homemade soup every day for $3 (includes two slices of bread). They only cycle about two different kinds, but it's SO cheap and filling and wonderful on a cold winter day. When I forget my lunch, this is my go-to. 4. Patio/Seating/Mim's. It's attached to Mim's on the left (so you can get food AND coffee) and a large extra seating area on the right. It's a great place to cozy up and read. Also the patio is really nice in the summer, you can sit out on the lawn in the sunshine and watch people going about their business. This place was a find. My daughter does swimming lessons up the road, and we stopped here for a treat following a recent lesson. Its a little rough looking on the inside, but the service is great and my mocha and her coco were yummy. We had a pastry which was tasty. They were able to take my Visa (thankfully) but they had to run off-site with my card to process it, which was a little unnerving. Overall, a great little spot. read more

People are friendly here. But coffee is just OK. The interior is old and worn-out. Old places usually attract me. But this one has no charm. I think if it wasn't for its location (across the street from the U of MN St. Paul campus) it would be out of business many years ago. Everything is OK at the best. But nothing is impressive. The flooring is damaged and should be replaced. The wall's paint is peeling off and chairs are like those uncomfortable patio ones. My mocha was too sweet. As if they add sugar to bury the blandness of the espresso. Maybe next time I try their pastries or homemade soup. read more

Love the atmosphere. The owner is friendly and nice to everyone. The coffee was super delicious and only cost a few dollars. If youre looking for a place to study, they also have wifi available. Def in my top ten list of best coffee shops in the Twin City region. read more

It's gotten better in the past 6 months since my last visit. Thank goodness. They now accept credit cards. They moved into a nicer room with a slight furniture upgrade. It's still a bit trodden feeling but it's okay (and has some squishy seats). My main gripe is still the quality of coffee, specifically my chosen espresso drink of cafe latte. This is definitely not a Dogwood or Stonehouse level blend. It has a weak (often called "watery") taste. I happily pay an extra buck or more a cup for great quality coffee, and when that happens this place will be a go-to. read more

Good, inexpensive food--perfect for students. I went here for lunch today with my wife. We were at the Veterinary clinic and one of the staff recommended Lori's. Initially, we were a little worried when we saw how worn out and sloppy the place is. But the food was very good and it's super cheap. My wife and I each had a different kind of soup. (The soup is made from scratch and comes with two slices of bread.) It was only 3 bucks! This must be great for students on a budget. We also tried two kinds of muffins, also very good. Finally, the coffee was good. The dude behind the counter was a little weird but super nice. It's a good place for a light meal if you're in the area. So my boyfriend and I are strolling through an unfamiliar St. Paul neighborhood after experiencing Como Zoo, when the heat starts to get to us and we realize we're both parched and need to find drinks. We happen to stumble upon a humble looking coffee shop. Unfortunately, though, after standing and waiting around for someone to show up for over 5 minutes, we ended up leaving empty handed. There was no bell on the door to alert someone a patron has walked in, no bell on the counter, nothing. I suspect whoever was in charge was either taking advantage of a particularly slow day by taking either an especially leisurely bathroom break or out back smoking a doob or something. We could have robbed them blind, for all they know! Completely irresponsibly managed shift that day. Terrible shame I had no opportunity to even try anything from the menu. We did get to quench our thirst with some free self-serve water that was out on the counter, though... Maybe someday I will have the opportunity to actually try some food or coffee there. read more

Welcome to the home of the most high-powered chai in the city. This is a homemade chai recipe, delicious spices, whole milk, and concentrated black tea that is akin to rocket fuel. Very nice place...excellent baked goods, simple but good soups. All pretty reasonably priced. Coffee is decently made and fair priced. The space is bright but a little run down and the chairs are sorta uncomfortable. There are a few chairs out front, too. Still, this is a nice place to kill a little time when on the U's St. Paul Campus, or if you are in the neighborhood otherwise. Dont think there's WiFi, but I like that. Keeps the WiFi squatters away. Hours can be a bit tricky, might want to call if its late or a sunday. Overall, a good coffee joint. read more

The Meil is a great drink and the service is perfect. The wi-fi works, there is no shortage of tables and large tables at that for groups and for studying. They do take credit cards and have a gorgeous patio area. My favorite coffee shop by far. read more

Lori's has the best prices on coffee, lattes, and other espresso drinks that I've ever seen. They also have some baked goodies to eat with your coffee (I had the cardamom cookie which was very good). Like other reviews said, Lori's only takes cash. Since the coffee is so cheap it isn't a big deal, but I guess if you aren't used to carrying around a couple bucks you might be caught off guard. The only downside I can think of is there aren't very many tables, and there are no couches, comfy chairs, or anything of that manner. Just several no-nonsense tables and chairs, which get the job done. read more

I come here pretty often when I'm between my St. Paul classes and I quite enjoy it. I like that it's pretty cheap since I don't have a lot to spend with being in college. It could use a bit of a makeover, though. I mean, worn-down coffee shops are the best, but it lacks in a bit of personality. Honestly, looks don't really matter much anyways. I mean, I'm eating a fantastic blueberry and lemon muffin with a cup of coffee for only $3! you can't beat that. I like that the wifi's pretty fast and the big open windows that let in a lot of sun.The family owned and welcome feel of the frequent customers makes this place pretty special. I would much rather go here than the Java City in the St. Paul Student Center!! read more

I cannot speak about the food for this location because I did not dine there, but I can speak about the customer service. I went up to order my tea, noticed a microwave in the corner, and asked it if was for public use. I suffer from digestive problems and regular food allergies so I generally bring my own food to cafes and rarely eat out. Having spotted a microwave, I was very excited to be able to eat my food warm. The man who grabbed my tea rudely said to me, "Why are you asking about the microwave? You want to heat up your own food? We serve food, you know? But whatever, that's fine." Needless to say, I didn't heat up my own food, but I did stay and sit because I was meeting a friend there. I would have left otherwise. I felt I was not treated very nicely. A simple "No, the microwave is not for personal or public use" would have sufficed. This place needs to work on their customer service, but we definitely won't be dining there. I understand that bringing food to places that serve food is often seen as poor restaurant etiquette. However, I purposely did not sit in the dining area and I purchased a drink to avoid loitering. To the owners/managers: be mindful of why people bring their own food when they go out or why they ask for certain substitutions. If I could stomach anything and everything without problems, I totally would but unfortunately that's not the case. As I mentioned, a simple "no" would have been okay. read more
