I must admit Up Cafe has me stumped for a rating. I went with 4 because half of it was a 3 to me and the other part a 5. I came here on a Saturday late morning with my family because I heard they were a no frills good roaster kind of shop. And the ambiance meets that a bit. Not too fancy but plenty of seating with a nice amount available outside. Nothing that I noticed in the way of more relaxed seating. Now the important stuff the regular old coffee. I had an Americano and my wife a cold brew. Both were average I'd even say my Americano was in the poor end. Now that being said they sell a lot of different varieties of beans. I found an Ethiopian light roast that I am partial too and brought it home. These beans were great. So all that said bottom line they sell 5 star beans. I just don't find them in the drinks we ordered while we were there. read more

Almost all the indoor tables were full on a Saturday afternoon in fall, with a few people sitting outside. Very small parking lot, but there is street parking around the corner. I got a Black Salted Caramel latte, and it didn't really taste any of the caramel. I got the blue energy drink tea, it was great! tasted like a blue jolly rancher almost! A great place to come do homework, study, or some work. A lot of seating. A little pricer and it can sometimes be hard to find parking but not too difficult. Lovely place to stop for coffee, chat with friends, catch up on some work. When walking in, the bakery items were front and center. Getting to the counter, both employees welcomed me and asked what I would like. They made my espresso right away, and was ready while I was still at the 'order' side of the counter! Only reason for 4 star is the espresso was a bit bitter for me and left an aftertaste. The cold brew was delicious and would highly recommend especially if you enjoy floral notes. read more

I am always looking for a new coffee place to do work or try new places out! UP cafe is truly a hidden gem located in Minneapolis. They offer a small parking lot but has lots of street parking. The place is very cozy giving it a sweet little charm. There is also a little outdoor seating which is perfect for this summer! I got one of their seasonal signature items, the Horchata. I added oatmilk to it and it was so refreshing with the perfect blend of rich and creamy flavor. There is a hint of cinnamon making it all come together. I also got a toffee cookie. When it comes to pastries I will always get one with my drink! There were many options to choose from the menu and I hope to be back soon to try out all the different drinks. I JUST discovered this coffee shop, when a friend told me it was in the area. It's tucked back and a hidden gem. I ordered an iced (yes I still get iced when I have to wear my gloves to hold my coffee) Lumberjack: vanilla, brown sugar, maple. It gave a nuttier flavor but was really good. It was $7.03 so it better be good - but I'd say prices are slightly cheaper than Five Watt so bonus points there. Next time I'll try the iced vanilla oat latte and report back. Parking? Small lot + plenty of street spots! WFH? Absolutely coming back to work form here. Plenty of tables and space. Catch up with a friend? Can do that, too! I had an iced vanilla oat latte (their iced drinks only has one size- 16 oz) and my partner had a raspberry oat mocha. I highly recommend their honeybee blender (tastes like a graham cracker in the best way) and a pastry. They also have a small-batch roastery with several types of coffee to sell. Service is always quick and kind, and the baristas always have recommendations. There is also outdoor seating with a fire pit! Bathrooms: clean Note for hearing impaired: very easy to have a conversation. Music is quiet. Note for those with mobility issues: there's is a step you need to take to get into the shop, but plenty of space inside. Parking: small free parking lot in front and free street parking. read more

UP Cafe is the best!! I visited with a friend and we both had such a hard time choosing what to drink because everything on their menu is so unique and fun. I settled on the "Mallow" iced latte with oat milk, which included brown sugar and flavored marshmallow syrup- yummy and refreshing! Gave me great camping and campfire-y vibes which I love! The cafe is very cute with bright pink walls, lots of plants, and soft overhead lighting. They also have the roastery shop where you can buy freshly roasted beans and other merch. I've bought their coffee wholesale and love the flavor, so I was excited to pound out a few hours of work in the coffee shop today. My husband and I wanted some ~blended coffee~ for brunch and decided on UP after a google map search. The cafe is sort of hidden, but I prefer it that way -- so many parking spaces, no big crowds (if it was in a more prominent area I'm sure they'd be buzzing ALL THE TIME), and still easy to get to. Look for the bright green facade! The inside is sort of a TARDIS situation, meaning that it's a lot bigger inside than it appears. When you come to the front of the building, you see that there are many choices for outdoor seating. I should've snapped a pic! They have lots of tables with chairs and umbrellas. Totally would sit and enjoy something outside. When you walk in the door, you're greeted with the sight of pastries and a revised COVID menu. There are marked spots with tape on the floor showing the preferred flow of traffic and spacing. Again, lots of space inside with seating. I'd feel safe dining in. The baristas were knowledgeable and kind. I asked about the hopped up Arnie Palmer (not available due to the pandemic) and would love to try it whenever it comes back - it's lemonade mixed with their own tea leaves if I understood correctly. YUM. I liked that I could pay with my card on the card reader and select a tip anywhere from 15%-30% or my own amount. After we ordered, my husband noticed that they have a back room with beans and other coffee gadgets, so he picked up some beans and a bottle of cold brew. We ordered a honeybee blender, a mocha blender with an extra shot of espresso, and a Sage Pesto Egg Breakfast Sandwich with the intention of sharing the sandwich. Both drinks came with paper straws. The honeybee blender was sweet like a milkshake with different flavor notes and way too easy to gulp down. The mocha was pretty classic chocolate and seemed one-note compared to the honeybee. Both really tasty. The absolute star of the show was the pesto sandwich. We ordered it with the house made biscuit (I LOVE biscuits and this one did not disappoint). It was beautiful and absolutely delicious. I wish I could eat it again right now. The blend of pesto with onion and the crumbly mealy biscuit was so lovely. I took the first bite and did NOT want to share the rest. (but I did. Aren't I so kind?) I enjoyed that UP clearly supports the community and makes efforts to do their part in being a sustainable, kind company. It feels like a place you can be proud to support. Great coffee? Check! Great food? Check! The ability to buy amazing beans (and cascara! And teas!), drink mixes, supplies, and coffee syrups to improve your coffee bar at home? CHECK!!! This was my first time here and I LOVE it already. It's a gorgeous shop with ample parking and awesome service. When you walk it, you enter the cafe, but the supply shop is to your right. If you're looking for certain flavors of syrup, you can call ahead and have them get it ready for you. I bought toasted marshmallow, cookie butter, and butterscotch syrups. I also got a MASSIVE container of chai concentrate and two bags of beans. I really just came for toasted marshmallow, but when I saw how great prices and selection were, I literally could not stop myself. I'm so excited to treat myself AND my people to good coffee. This is my new supply shop - so much better than World Market (better prices and local!) and faster than the Internet. Have a drink you've been thinking about for years? Pick up the stuff to recreate it here. Of course, I couldn't leave without coffee. I picked up an iced oat milk latte for one of my student workers, and The Mallow for myself (you're killin' me, smalls!!!). The Mallow was exceptional and my student loved the iced latte! I didn't get a chance to stay and sit in the cafe, but wow I was absolutely blown away and completely surprised by UP. As a frequenter of many coffee shops in the Twin Cities, I was surprised that I hadn't heard of UP, especially as it's hidden right north of Como! This place is totally a hidden gem. If I was a student, I would definitely use the cafe space to study - it had plenty of seating and large windows - perfect ambiance to catch on homework or with a friend. I grabbed an iced matcha latte and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor, which I have personally found to be hit or miss when it comes to independent cafes. The service was quick and staff were friendly and I was overall just super pleased by experience and will definitely be returning. Would recommend! read more

Beans roasted on site with love. They have a great plant filled dog friendly patio. Great study and casual meeting space. They don't do panini and salads anymore but still have a variety of freshly baked treats (e.g., cookies, sausage rolls, krispy bars). Check out their retail offerings of coffee and tea brewing items and take home a bag of beans. Staff are willing to help me and describe the different roasts and specialty drinks. I had a sad little interaction with the owner where I asked if there was a way to make his employees more aware of the dollar off Yelp check-in offer offered there, so that they weren't confused each time I used it as a frequent customer. To this he promptly replied that he wasn't aware of that deal and would immediately remove it--wait for it--because of its unsustainable profit margins. Wow. He's finally solved his profit problem by removing a barely used, unknown easter egg coupon that incentivized a longtime customer to visit more often, buy bags of beans, food with his kids, and drinks, when there's dozens of other roasters nearby. As most everyone says, this is one place that is not the easiest to find. Nonetheless, it is well worth the trip. With on site roasting this is the best way to enjoy fresh coffee. A couple months ago the hubs and I had some friends over for dinner - they gifted us with a fresh bag of Up's Guatemalan roast, which they said was one of their fav coffee roasts.   I usually don't venture out of pre-packaged K-Cups these days, mostly only because I don't drink a ton of coffee (usually only 1 cup in the morning!) and bags go stale. After grinding and tasting this coffee though, I knew that would be forever changed and that I had to get more. And as luck would have it their shop is just a 5 min drive from my work! So I made a lunch date with myself.   Neat little shop, kind of tucked away right in the middle of some industrial buildings, which is the perfect spot for a café IMO. Spacious, plenty of seating, dog friendly, and I'm guessing a nice patio when the weather is right. Menu is right up front when you walk in, allowing you to decide before going up to the counter. Lots of different food options, from wraps to salads to sandwiches. They'll bring your food and coffee to you. Good selection of coffee drinks as well! Beans are off to the right in their own little area.   I've gotten a couple of different sandwiches, which have not only been delicious but I get them with the side salad which is HUGE and comes with some nuts and dried fruits with a nice balsamic vinaigrette. I love it so much! The cold press is solid and my first visit I enjoyed a latte that was made from beans that had been aged in whiskey barrels. Amazing.   Besides the Guatemalan beans I've also had the Yemen (recommended by my friend) and yesterday had my first try of the Dominican Peaberry (bought based off the tasting notes). All are fairly light roasts, and I'm no coffee aficionado, but I love how each is so unique tasting (I realize how dumb that sounds, like duh obviously different roasts and beans will taste different, I've just never taken my coffee to this level before looool).   My new favorite lunch spot, I look forward to trying new coffee and sampling the different menu items! read more

Low-key one of the better roasters in the cities. The branding may be more reminiscent of early 2000s, but the coffee is so good. Superb value, lots of variety of whole bean coffee stocked in the back room. My favorites are typically from Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Colombia. They have speciality lot coffees as well, featuring local coffee farmers of regions around the world. Great for pourover and cold brew methods. Plus you can buy all the coffee gear you need, like filters and numerous brewing method setups. I haven't stayed to drink or eat in the cafe, but there's plenty of outdoor seating during the summer. They have become our default local coffee roaster to buy from, and their health precautions during COVID-19 are suitable for customer safety. read more
