Legendary. Lorraine Fabrics has something for everyone. Isles and isles of all sorts of fabrics you could ever imagine. I mean, there is some serious stuff in here. Overwhelming? Absolutely. The prices seem to be on point, especially for the more hard to find fabrics. Also, be sure to visit the upstairs section in which they offer $1.99/yard deals. The staff leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I've only been in here a couple of times. Each time, I felt rushed. The first time I needed assistance finding a fabric to insert into a dress; I was pointed to a lot of fabric no more than two feet away and was told "that should do." This past time around, as I was checking out... I didn't get a "hi, how are you, or bye, have a good day." There is a serious lack of customer service in this place. The minimum you can purchase is an 1/8 of a yard, which is perfect for me because I don't sew; I use fabric for crafts so an 1/8 of a yard is all I need. I spent a total of $3.64 this weekend for four different color taffeta fabrics which will last me a long time! read more

Oh my, all the Fabric! I can't help but spend hours here. The first thing I do is head to the bargain area, up the stairs in the back. $1.99 a yard in the bargain area, yay! Go here if you need fabric of just about any type! The building and neighborhood of the company are not aesthetically beautiful, but their huge selection of all types of fabric is outstanding!!!! The place has been around forever so they've" stood the test of time". You can find anything from upholstery fabric to wedding gown satins and beautiful laces.... so many types you have to see it yourself to understand. When I go in, I usually make a b-line straight to the $1.99 loft which probably has as much fabric upstairs as they do downstairs! This place has a $1.99 Loft not found at any other fabric supplier with fantastic deals that make other business jelouse. You can find silk and other expensive material that would most likly be $100+ at another store that would cost about $24 at Lorraine's. I was a frequent visitor there for a senior project that I did on fashion design & I literly found the plaid pattern fabric that I drew out from my head. It was remarkable that a store could expect what you ask before you even think to suggest what you were looking for. They also supply patters for what projects you are see in their pattern orderbook & have embellishments such as buttons, chains, feathers & fringe I also found the bubble gum fur fabric that the reviewer Meghan H. without even having read her review on this site 3 years after she did, which goes to show you that this store keeps up with the demand of it's costumers. read more

I don't sew, but my mom does and she took me there the other day. The shear variety of cloth and other notions is amazing, and so are the prices. My mom sews doll clothes for a hospital as a volunteer and it helps that she can get the cloth cheaper there than anywhere else. The staff has always been helpful to my mom, and they often give her more than the yard she requests. They are not stingy about their measurements. What struck me the most about Lorraine Mills is the sign they have out front, welcoming everyone from different races, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities. This welcoming alone makes me want to shop there again, because they say they welcome ALL to shop there. As a member of a minority group, I appreciate that! read more

I went to this store recently on a road trip. I actually stopped off at That $1.99 fabric place in Auburn first and then made my way here. I headed straight to the back of the store and up the stairs in the back to the bargain loft where all the fabric was $1.99. I saw some of the same fabrics that I had just seen at That $1.99 fabric place. I did find a couple of cotton fabrics but wasn't really impressed with the selection. They had material for curtains/upholstery and clothing as well. It seemed pretty good. I looked through the middle sections a little but was unimpressed with most of it. Many of the fabrics felt cheap when I felt them. Then I hit upon the corduroy fabrics and found a bunch of really nice corduroy fabrics in some beautiful colors. I got a deep purple color and a gorgeous turquoise blue. It is a finer wale corduroy, and felt great, just like the stuff at the fabric stores that sells for 3-4X as much $$ I went downstairs to check out and looked briefly at the main floor fabrics. I saw some of the fabrics that I had seen at That $1.99 fabric place on the main floor of Lorraine for $4.99 a yard which I thought was funny. The main floor prices seemed a little better than other fabric stores. If I was in the area I would definitely stop in. I'm not sure that I would make another special trip to visit here. There is no public bathroom here so make sure you visit a restroom before you go. The weird thing I noticed is that they have the same exact bags as That $1.99 fabric place. It's a purple bag so it's not like a common plain white one. I am wondering if they are affiliated or run by the same owners. read more

Absolutely AWFUL customer service. Clerk refused to sell me fabric then refused to give me the brand name of the fabric so I could buy it elsewhere. She was rude and dismissive. Seriously, I was attempting to spend $2000.00. Yes, two THOUSAND dollars. And she was not interested in taking my money. How are they still in business? I would give negative stars if it were possible. Have tried two times since my initial interaction with the clerks in the store. I have to drive 8 HOURS to get to the store to purchase the fabric in person BUT THE CLERK WILL NOT EVEN VERIFY IF THE FABRIC IS IN STOCK. She actually said I will have to come in and LOOK FOR IT. In my unabashed snobbery I sometimes find Pawtucket a bit scary. However, I have to be over there twice a week to run groups at Slater Middle School and, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I discovered Lorraine Fabrics while searching for a Dunkin Donuts. Nothing good came out of my search for crappy coffee except extreme ire and the serendipitous discovery of Lorraine's!! *Sigh* I'm such a geek for fabric. I even suffered through several years of forced participation in a 4-H club with a bunch of country bumpkin weirdos with missing fingers that got bitten off by giant lop-eared rabbits just to learn to sew... So after discovering Lorraine's, I plotted for several weeks how to get out of the group facilitator car pool so I could go fabric shopping after the group rather than back to work. I was foiled several times by my gas-conscious colleagues before it finally occurred to me that I could go on Saturday! Why hadn't I thought of this before? After so much delay of gratification, I am pleased to report that I was not at all disappointed. Lorraine's is absolutely enormous and generously stocked with a wide variety of gorgeous fabrics that will get your imagination going. Silk, linen, crepe, grenadine, grosgrain, vinyl, faux fur.... I walked around, fondling everything I could get my hands on while hundreds of different possible projects jumped out at me. We all know I need some damn curtains but why hadn't I thought of making a bathing suit before?? And didn't I need some pleather pants? What about that sweet chemise in my Simple Sewing with a French Twist book? And this fabric here would make some gorgeous throw pillows for the bed....! Sweet Jesus! I hit the jackpot. Upstairs is the Bargain Loft where you can buy two yards of fabric for, say, $3.50 total!! Normally fabric runs from $7-$17 a yard. Since I haven't sewed since making my prom dress in 10th grade (shortly after which I dropped out of that creepy 4-H club that met in a double-wide trailer on a goat farm), I thought I'd start slow. So I just bought a couple of yards of jersey knit in a funky pattern straight out of Urban Outfitters and called it a day. Meanwhile, downstairs there were several professional dressmakers purchasing beautiful satins and organzas for couture wedding dresses and a cute young couple rolling out several yards of hot pink faux fur..... Which I assume they will be using to make sassy bunny costumes or Burning Man outfits or... you know, I think it's probably best if we don't know what they are using it for. My only complaint about Lorraine's is the proliferation of "DO NOT DO..." signage posted on florescent paper about every two feet throughout the store. Such as, "ABSOLUTELY NO SAMPLES! IF YOU ARE CAUGHT WITH SCISSORS SNIPPING A PIECE OF FABRIC, WE WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED!" and "DO NOT COME IN THIS DOOR!" and "DO NOT EXIT THIS DOOR" and "NO RETURNS ON ANYTHING YOU BUY FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER!" I felt like The Man was going to swoop down at any moment to yell at me for breaking one of the trillion rules posted around the store. I was looking over my shoulder the whole time, sure I was being watched. But my paranoia aside, I really hate it when places make you leave your "oversized" bag at the counter. I am always suspicious the cashier is going to snoop through it while I am shopping... On principal I've refused to enter stores when they ask for my bag. Do I LOOK like I've got sticky fingers? Maybe. But I've actually been terrified of shoplifting since my mother caught my sister with a pilfered piece of gum on a road trip and turned the car around to drive 1 1/2 hours back to the gas station so my sister could pay the guy the 10 cents and be properly shamed. [Message gotten! Thanks Mom!!] I did overhear the owner complaining that some bold crafter had run out the front door the week before with an entire ream of expensive silk, so perhaps the excessive signage is necessary. And you know, I can see wanting to steal from Lorraine Fabrics. After all, getting stolen from is the highest form of flattery. read more

I seriously debated with myself for a little while about whether or not to write a review for Lorraine Fabric on here. It is seriously so awesome that I selfishly thought "No, don't write a review, the less people that know about it the more awesome fabric for me!!" But in the end I just can't help myself, I needed to share the great prices. For the record though I did feel like a maniacal super villain trying to hoard the deals, which was fun while it lasted. Anyway, if you are looking for fabric for anything, really ANYTHING, Lorraine should be your very first stop. They have a huge selection of fabrics, and every notion you could desire. The store is simply amazing. And the Bargain Loft is even more impressive than the rest of the store. We found so many beautiful fabrics up there for $1.99 a yard, you can't beat that price! Lorraine's is the fabric store. The one and only in RI I think. There used to be a time of more independent, privately owned fabric store but now its all chains. Lorraine stands alone with a great selection, 2 floors of great finds. The place has a $1.99 bargain loft which has such amazing deals. The issue with Lorraine's is that even though I can easily find something great for $1.99 a yard but at the same time I can find something for $16.00 a yard when I need 12 yards... The only thing I dislike about this place is the staff. Some are really nice but others are rude and tough to deal with. Don't try to come in at the last minute they will look at you like you just kicked a puppy. read more

A real Pawtucket gem, everybody should know about this place. First of all, the range of fabrics available is just amazing. I feel like a little girl in this store! With its creaky wooden floors it just speaks to my childhood. I always get to the urge to bury myself within the bolts of varying textures, colors, and patterns that pack Lorraine Fabrics from wall to wall. Aisles and aisles of choices, from silk to upholstery. Prices are generally reasonable, and ocassionally shockingly low. There's a bargain area upstairs that even has vintage patterns, though the selection of notions is slightly disappointing. I do wish there was more attentive service here. It feels like you are bothering someone when you ask for assistance. Other than that this place is completely enchanting. read more

Great fabric store. So much to chose from and admire. I could spend hours on here. Upstairs is a bargain outlet all fabrics $2.99 a yard which is unheard of. It's mix and match, and once it's gone it's gone so be sure to get the yardage that you need. The woman who works upstairs a Spanish woman is so wonderful. Every time I go in she remembers my last project which floors me her memory. There are remnants and many marked down patterns. Some of the fabrics are high end, some cheaper. Downstairs is the non markdowns, ranges from $4.99-29.99 a yard. They have African fabrics, batiks, and silks. Such beautiful fabrics. It's huge so plan your time accordingly . It's a fun day shopping around and finding good deals. I highly suggest you stop here first for your fabrics. read more

I purchased white cotton fabric for a dress, 10 yards for a new duvet, and 1 yard if my favorite color to make a skirt, plus 2 yards of trimming all for $33 on the 2nd floor. This isn't really a review per-say so much as a little blurb from a former employee. The store was fantastic to work for, and I wanted to touch on something Danielle W. said in her review: You have no idea how frustrating it is when college season rolls around, and RISD pretty much dumps 40 new textiles students into your store. Not only is it the beginning of the school year (and many of these students couldn't tell dupioni from muslin), but it seems as though they have no common sense. They come in with their oversized bags, and their sneakily hidden scissors. Why? Because they don't want to wait in line to purchase a sample. It would break your heart too if you were cleaning up after the flash mob, only to find not a tiny snip missing from that $60 embroidered silk dupioni, but a giant jagged cut the size of a baby's head. So unfortunately a select few makes those signs necessary, as well as the no over-sized bag rule. And the giant sign that says no drinks or food in the store. I remember before we enlarged those signs to make them overwhelming and in-your-face, the amount of people ignoring the signs and bringing their children in with sticky candy (which we'd later find imbedded in the matte satins), or bringing giant coffees which we'd have to throw out 3 or 4 tubes of silk. I can't say anything about the staff now, but I remember when I worked there with my friend Laura 4 years ago, the staff was fantastic. Except that Bargain Loft associate, Carmen. After reading all the horrible reviews on customer service, I decided to not take a chance at being locked out, and went early afternoon. It's a good thing I don't live here any more; I'd spend half my life in there! I was shopping for fabric for my niece's dress and found everything I was looking for upstairs in the 1.99 dept, and I have to say, the ladies that did the cutting and check-out were as nice as can be. Maybe they read all the bad reviews and changed their tune, but I had a great time! The fabric prices and quality are good, but the lackluster customer service is awful!!! The staff is uncaring and rude! My experience at this particular establishment was appalling!!! The cashiers were eyeballing my 65 year old mother as if she would steal and they brushed off her questions. Bottom line, I will NEVER return to this store and I hope my friends won't either! There's a wide variety of stuff upstairs as well - apparel fabrics, quilting cotton, and a lot of odds and ends of trims. Their second floor where the fabrics are all $2.99 a yard was perfect - found several excellent fabrics and had a hard time choosing. Raced out of work to run this errand by 6pm, their clearly stated closing time. Arrived at 5:55 with cash in hand to purchase two zippers and the doors were locked. The woman would not even unlock the door to speak to me but stated through the glass that they were closed, making no effort to hide her annoyance with me. Will never return. Funny how someone else said to ignore the first floor and go straight to the second floor, because I find the second floor (discount fabrics) to have absolutely nothing I like or need. The first floor has EVERYTHING I love in a fabric - flashy and stretchy material! I only need the first section on the left, the trims section, and the lycra fabrics. Rarely do I find a fabric store that has everything all in one huge store. They have a huge selection of awesome trims too! The prices are pretty high though. I have been to this store on several occasions. It is the first place for me to go when I want fabric. The first floor is eye candy. Such nice fabric and great prices. I usually shop on the 2nd floor. They have the best prices around on fabric. Most of what I make is for charity and the great selection and prices make that an even better bargain for me. The people there are always polite and very helpful. I never have to wait at the checkout. If there is more than two people in line, there is always another register open when I go and they say, "I can help you over here." They do close the upstairs 15 minutes early. But, there is a sign at the bottom of the stairs stating this fact. No food or drinks. After all, it is a fabric store. So, if you get to the door and have a sippy cup for you child or a drink in your hand, take it back to the car before you enter the store. You just cannot let your kids run wild. They could get hurt. Keep and eye on them. I cannot say enough good things about this store. If you have never been, it is well worth the trip. They always have a nice selection of holiday fabric on the first floor. read more

I am totally not impressed. Yes they have a lot of fabric. But to balance that, they have a lot of signs telling you how to behave. "Do not play with the thread" Seriously? And they make sure you know there is no public restroom. So god help you if an emergency should arise. Also, the cotton fabrics in the bargain loft are mixed with blends so if you're looking for quilting material, be careful. Check it out. There are no fat quarters available for smaller projects and in the bargain lofts, the signs tell you "one yard minimum." Well for a quilter it will go in the stash but then again, maybe you don't want to be told how much to buy even at $1.99. And I couldn't find the colors I needed for the quilt I'm working on. The lady upstairs was polite but I wouldn't say friendly and downstairs...forget it. No interaction other than what was necessary to ring up my purchase. Also if your mobility is impaired, plan to sit in the car. I saw no way in or to the second floor unless you used the stairs. If I'm wrong about that, I'd have to say I didn't see any signs directing people to another entrance. I was glad to leave and don't plan to go back. read more
