If you want an honest opinion of what you need then Kevin is the one to speak to. I brought in a cushion for an estimate and explained that my husband thought the loveseat was too soft. Kevin said the foam in the cushion was fine, but the springs might be the problem. I think most places would just do the foam without asking. Saved me about $300 And less waste in the environment! This is a long overdue review for a splendid business. Last year Kevin and Pamela did a complete overhaul of a much-loved mid-century couch that has been in my family for 3 generations. (Re-tied the springs, re-glued the wood frame, *and* reupholstered it!) I took an Upholstery class here after driving by and seeing the sign. It was AWESOME! The classes are necessarily small, it's a small place, and the group was great. Kevin and Pamela are very welcoming and foster a great atmosphere of collaboration and fun. Kevin is a great teacher and he does some beautiful work. They seem to be great staples of the neighborhood with locals stopping by with kids and dogs in-tow to check on their orders. The pizza place down the street needed their seats covered and Kevin took pains to get them done ASAP so they could continue on with business. I took a class there, and I can't call it a class. On the first day, all we did was pull nails and tacks from our chairs. There was no instruction, no overview of the course, no setting of expectations. I thought this would happen in second class, but again, no. Each of us proceeded at our own pace. When I finished a task, Kevin would tell me what to do next, but that was all. I would call this a work space rental, not a class. If it were a class, he would have told us initially what we could expect to learn and accomplish each session, would have given instruction to the class and demonstrations so we could learn from what the others were doing. You can find instructional videos online (many from Kevin) that describe the steps in upholstery, and if you have space in your home, save your money and do it there. $425 is a lot of money to rent 8 workspace sessions. read more

Just had my couch cushions upgraded by Kevin and it's like I have a brand-new couch! The foam stuffing the former upholsterer had used was never satisfactory but I bore with it for too long, finally asking Kevin what he could do. Well, what he could do--adding springs wrapped in down--is just what the doctor ordered! My couch not only looks better but is far more comfortable. While the work was not cheap, the fact that I will easily get 10 more years out of the couch makes it well worth it. I always prefer taking care of a good investment in furniture, i.e., reupholstering a good piece, rather than buying a new piece for the same cost. Too much of the new furniture today is not built to last but to chuck out and replace with another poorly made piece. read more

Kevin does top-quality work. I have great respect for his workmanship, integrity, honesty, and fairness. He replaced worn-out springs and preserved the upholstery (which was in very good condition) in the seat of one of our favorite armchairs. (Other upholsterers insisted we needed new fabric in order to fix the springs.) Kevin's approach, much more cost-effective and efficient, was 100% successful and satisfactory and allowed us to keep the existing fabric. On another occasion, he repaired the fabric on an ottoman, giving it a renewed lease on life. This 'rescue' operation was enormously helpful and most appreciated. My wife and I have a couch that the 3 seat cushions had lost their shape over the years due to usage. We had a called a few places for prices to fix and were told it would be approx $100 to $150 per cushion to replace the foam to size. Since that seemed to be the reality we decided to get it done. We went to Upholstery on Broadway early Sat morning with the 3 cushions in hand hoping to get away with just replacing the middle cushion (that one was in the worst condition) based on their opinion and advice. As soon as we walked in the person took a look and said they weren't form but some material (which I don't remember the name of) that simply needed to be re shaped. He then went ahead and did that for us at no charge. We clearly had no idea and if he wanted to could have sold us new cushions for a few hundred dollars. Sad to say that I never expect that to happen in these situations so pleasantly surprized and so impressed with the honesty. Needless to say I will certainly go here for all my upholstery needs in the future and highly recommend them to anyone. read more

We had a family heirloom chair reupholstered, and the final bill came in about 50% more than the estimate. I don't question that it took a lot of work or that the materials are expensive, and I don't begrudge skilled craftspeople charging a fair price, but 50% over estimate wreaked havoc on our budget. Also, while the finished chair looks good, for as much as it wound up costing I would expect *perfect*, and it doesn't look perfect. The imperfections probably wouldn't bother me as much if it had only cost two-thirds of what we ultimately paid. I hate to write a countervailing review on local craftspeople, but my experience left me less than totally happy. I don't think they're malicious or dishonest or bad at what they do--probably it's down to a miscommunication or the complication of Kevin and Pamela technically being two separate businesses (?)--, but I'd recommend being extra clear in communicating and getting a commitment to a final cost in advance to avoid budget-busting unpleasant surprises. read more

I was looking for an upholstery class for ever and finally found Upholstery on Broadway. I have been a student there for 2 sessions (about 4 months) now and I LOVE it!! Kevin and Pamela (the teachers) are the nicest people and are really ready and willing to teach you everything they know and help you work out design/fabric ideas with your piece of furniture as well the nitty gritty about how to do it. Class is also a great social atmosphere, between listening to some great tunes and chatting with other classmates... I truly look forward to going each week! They also can do custom upholstery if you don't want to get your hands dirty! I've seen some of the pieces that come through and they are GORGEOUS! Definitely check this place out. I came by the Upholstery studio the other day with a dog eaten cushion of our very new couch. Kevin was a extremely gracious and friendly. He offered to sew up the cushion right there on the spot while I waited. I followed his advice to do a quick job since there was a chance or darling doggy might strike again. What a great experience. Got new filling for 6 sofa cushions. The added wrinkle was I wanted them to be very firm. Never realized that would make the job much more challenging.
