Excellent food and service! I was in Buda visiting family. They were raving about Chavelos. They dine there twice a week. I had breakfast tacos with egg, cheese, and avocado with a side of breakfast potatoes. Our server, Aly, was so friendly and attentive. The salsas were hot! But with different levels of heat. The back is the front and the front is the back here. You drive by the street address, and the restaurant is not even marked. Go around to the alley in the back and there is a welcoming parking lot, a huge sign and customers going in and out. * * * Chavelos is your basic Texas Tex-Mex restaurant. All the standards. Prepared the normal ways these things are prepared. As comforting as old bedroom slippers. You can find these dishes in thousands of places all over Texas. But you will do perfectly well having them here. * * * Two unusual notes besides the back is front issue. a) They have beautiful post oaks in the back-is-front back yard. On warm days, you can sit out there. I recommend it. b) They are massively generous with chips and dip. The initial bowl they give you is microscopic. But they are refilling that bowl constantly. Scoops of chips showed up at our table many many times during our meal. The chips are lovely. The salsa is no great shakes. Still, I ate 6,438 chips with dip. We've been here before, twice, that I can think of. My son mentioned that they went and liked it and wanted to know if we had ever been there. I said yes but couldn't think why we rarely go. Then we went yesterday and realized why we didn't ever return. For me it was the drinks. I don't like restaurants that sell can drinks and not fountain drinks. Second, the sauce that was on my burrito compuesto, which I don't know why it was called compuesto because it didn't have anything in it but meat and beans, anyhow, back to the sauce. I believe the sauce is the same sauce they drench on most of there foods which was alright for me but for my son and husband they did not like it. Third, the queso compuesto ($12.99) was expensive for a large but wasn't really much of a large. Maybe if they change to fountain drinks I might go back, every think else I can deal with. read more

Chicken enchiladas consisted of soggy stewed meat and an overly sour green sauce. Queso had no additional flavor. Tasted like straight up melted processed cheese. Complimentary chips with basic red salsa and the crispy beef taco were the highlights. The service was good but keep in mind they only had two tables to serve. I don't know if they are ever busy since the new ownership took over. Atmosphere gets 3 stars because they have a nice shaded outdoor area. The inside is pretty bland. Kind people and good service! The chips and salsa had a classic flavor, a little kick if you eat enough of the salsa, and cured the craving. The highlight was the flour tortillas that were warm, soft, and tasted fresh. I had the Machacada which was good. I wish the meat was cooked a little more to give it more of a crisp/crunch texture. Yes, I entered mimosas into my Yelp search, like the desperate woman at the end of my rope who had been up since 5am that I was. Returned options were Cracker Barrel, three places that were closed and Chavelos. We B lined straight here, no brakes, with flashers on, mimosa emergency. (Parts of this story may have been fabricated for effect) Small little house with about 15 tables so we opted for the gorgeous patio under the ginormous oak tree. Also mindful that we would not disturb the other patrons with our weekend revelry. Quick service and a tasty, spicy Bloody Mary. Cozy interior with good service. They have a great location in downtown Buda which makes it really nice on a pleasant Fall day to enjoy the walking amenities of the downtown area. The chips and salsa are wonderful and interior has a cute little design with a wall mural. Western themed interior and great service. My favorite is the chili rellenos. Sometimes the food seems a little bit bland but that's because it's not over salted like most Mexican places. read more

I ordered the barbecoa plate and the meat did not taste good. The food came about 4 minutes after we ordered and three people ordered food with me. Chavelos is one of a few Tex-Mex choices in Buda. Nestled just west off Main Street, you'll find a converted house with a dozen or so tables. Patio dining looks nice when it's not 100 degrees in Texas. Parking lot is small; usually full during main dining hours. House margaritas were on special the day we dined. If you don't order frozen, staffers utilize the mop closet as a make shift bar. Made us wonder if we were gonna get a sweet and sour mix or fabuloso passion fruit flavor. Also, does the health dept know about this? Chips aren't that great; neither is the watery salsa with very little kick. In the past I've found the spicy shrimp enchiladas decent as well as the tilapia plate. I ordered a taco salad with shredded chicken and beans in the bottom. Crisp shell and ample portions of guac and sour cream made for a good lunch. GF ordered what used to be the "Willie's Plate" at many places around Austin. Beef enchilada with chili con carne, queso chip, and beef taco. Not much to complain about except the lunch prices are too high. And the above mentioned make shift bar. That's one marg, two entrees, and an iced tea for $30 with tip. Think I'll go try that new place out by 35 next time read more

Chavelo's is our favorite restaurant in Buda. The food is great, the atmosphere is awesome, and the service is amazing. Every time we've gone in, the staff is so friendly and kind. I have a very busy toddler and they always acknowledge him and talk to him. We love the enchiladas... super delicious. Literally you can't go wrong with any of the choices on the menu. read more

The waitstaff here is amazing! All of our waiters were phenomenal, so this review is not reflective of them. Unfortunately, each food item we ordered was subpar. The queso was watery and unflavorful. My cheese enchiladas had a chunk of beef in them, which was very upsetting to find as a vegetarian. Everything seemed to lack flavor. The redeeming items were the chips and salsa. I remember coming here as a kid and the food was of very high quality, but things seem to have gotten worse since then. Great little gem in Buda! Been trying to find a no frills genuine authentic Mexican joint in south Austin and we found it! Came on a Friday evening and they were busy but got seated fairly quickly! Parking wasn't the greatest but we found some in the historic street one block over and walked over. They have a patio outside. Great Margs! and this is by far the best fajita meat we've had in Austin! Flavorful and not bland like most other spots and the meat has some fat to it which retains a lot of flavor and juiciness! Out car shopping with my beautiful daughter and really wanted some great Tex-Mex. I've been to Chavelos before and happily drove past and remembered the place. So happy to see this great spot in Buda Texas was alive and well during the Covid craziness. We sat down and were immediately greeted by our waiter and scanned the menu with our phones ( why did it take a pandemic to start using this technology). I settled on the sour cream chicken enchiladas while my daughter chose the shrimp enchiladas. As we waited we had great chips and salsa. For me the salsa is always an indication of how the meal will taste. The salsa didn't disappoint-fresh with great flavor and just enough heat ( I can take more but this allowed the flavors to shine through while reminding your taste buds that a lil heat is always a good thing). The shrimp enchiladas were a nice sized and the verde sauce was flavorful with the perfect amount of heat. The chicken enchiladas were stuffed well with chicken and covered with a yummy sour cream that enhanced the chicken. We we both very happy with the rice and beans - with the rice being extremely good (I wanted more). Topping the rice with the salsa was a great choice for me while my daughter ate her rice as presented I'd highly recommend when you have that need for really good Tex-Mex you find your way to the lil town of Buda Texas and enjoy a meal at Chavelos. read more

Maybe they're trying to appeal more to the neighborhood demographic, but this isn't like the Mexican food I grew up eating with my family. Stopped by for breakfast. Will say the migas breakfast plate was good with a side of bacon. Migas not soggy like some other local places. The barbacoa was not bad either ( not greasy). Only complaint is they don't have homemade flour tortillas (store bought packaged, have a distinct smell to them and they don't taste good at all) read more
