Must be pretty cool to catch babies for a living.
    Jes A.

It's hard to put into words how much I truly love Naomi and everyone at Los Angeles Midwives. Naomi delivered my first baby in May 2020, peak pandemic, and before she officially started Los Angeles Midwives with Lillit. You can see my previous review - on Naomi Elizabeth Drucker's yelp page (I tried pasting it here.. but too long). While this experience had some differences, the care was the same. The home visits went away and I went to their office in West Hollywood. While a yelp review isn't necessarily the place I want to put all the details of my pregnancy, this feels like the one time you do want to overshare as this is a deeply personal decision to make and can be scary to commit to something that isn't 'the norm' (in America). I was hopeful for a home birth this time around (didn't pan out the first time around.. kids head was big and he didn't budge past 3 cm for a good 12 hours.. I tapped out and he came 20 hours later). And they say second babies come faster and easier, so let's GOOOOO. But, I had some unexplained pain (and by pain, I mean it was worse than my previously mentioned labor...) that persisted for 6 weeks before the doctors discovered I had a 7 inch ovarian cyst twisting my ovary and it needed to be removed at 34 weeks pregnant! After that experience, I said thank you no thank home birth.. I've had enough pain, I'd like to sign up for the drugs please. Naomi (& co) have two different OB's they work with should they need to be consulted and when this pain first started, she quickly reached out to one for answers. He didn't have any at the time. It wasn't until I received the results back on an MRI on my son that a 7 inch ovarian cyst was detected. I told Lillit about it and she was the one that said that's alarming and needs to be addressed. I ended up in the ER a few days later. Once there, the team at Cedars (and I mean TEAM, had 4-6 different Dr's on the case that discussed next steps and made a quick decision to get me into surgery. I'm grateful for that care, attention, and access - but annoyed that I had been to so many Dr.'s who disregarded my pain. It was my Midwives who heard me and ultimately flagged the problem. As I recovered from this, Naomi held the door open for me to do a home birth, seemed like maybe I could do it, even though, in my mind, unless this baby just slipped out of me suddenly, I was going for the drugs, but I was grateful I had someone who knew me, my heart, and was willing to hold that space for me, even if I wasn't. Labor hit fast, furious, and two weeks early. Naomi came and I was 7 cm (!!!). I made the call to go to the hospital because (if you're paying attention) thank you no thank you pain. 10 hours later I had a baby in my arms. So yeah, maybe I could have done it at home, but it was ultimately my choice and Naomi supported me through it all. Naomi and Lillit are building something incredibly special which makes sense because they are incredible at what they do. Lillit even came to see me after my surgery even though she had just had a long day herself. Midwives bring a different kind of care that is maternal focused and that's a strange, big, but subtle difference between traditional OB care and midwifery care. If you have even an inkling of wanting to do a home birth, or have a midwife support you through your pregnancy, labor, delivery, and post partum weeks - meet with them. I can't imagine having gone through this pregnancy with just OBs.

    Anna C.

Where do I even begin? My husband and I were disappointed with the level of care I was receiving from my OBGYN at the start of my pregnancy. Even though I really liked my OB, I knew I deserved (and ALL women deserve) better than the 5-minute super rushed, hyper medicalized pregnancy check-ins she had been offering me. Our doula had suggested we look into Los Angeles Midwives and from our very first Zoom meet-and-greet with Naomi and Lilit, we fell in love and never looked back. I cannot even begin to tell you what a magical pregnancy experience they provided me. They were endlessly present with me and reminded me to attend to my entire holistic self (physical, spiritual, emotional, etc) throughout my pregnancy. Perhaps one of the most powerful lessons Naomi and Lilit taught me was the importance of consent when it came to my body. That might sound silly (like, duh its 2023, of course consent is a thing), but until I was in their care, I realized that while every medical professional I had been examined by in my life never touched me without reason or without explaining to me what they were doing, I had never truly been asked if I was ok with someone touching me. Without fail, at every single pregnancy check-in with Naomi and Lilit, they asked "are you comfortable with me touching here/there/etc." Admittedly, I thought it was unnecessary at first. But by the end of my experience and birth with them, I felt safer and more in control of my body than I ever had in my life. And that is MINDBLOWING--- Los Angles Midwives gave me the gift of considering pregnancy, birth, and postpartum not as a time of vulnerability but as a time of intense support, power, and personal growth. You cannot put a price tag on that. As fate would have it, I tested positive for Covid 5 days before my due date and Naomi somehow managed to turn a nightmarish situation into a beautifully, meaningfully powerful birthing experience... Covid and all. She came to my bedside, more than once, while I coughed up a lung, to care for me and help me talk through my options. She was wise, fearless, thoughtful, and loving. She continuously kept my birthing desires and goals in mind (including my vision of creating a "red tent" to labor in in my hospital room, making placenta art on a canvas after my son was born, and finding a way for me to move and labor with an epidural without feeling glued to my back/the bed). Her calm demeanor, reassuring presence, and go-with-the-flow attitude all contributed to my positive birth experience. I cannot recommend her enough. If you pass up Los Angeles midwives, you are MISSING OUT on not only a phenomenal pregnancy and birth opportunity, but also on the personal empowerment and support you gain from working with them. My husband, son, and I have since moved to Chicago for work and the #1 reason I am heartbroken about leaving LA is that it means I can't have Naomi attend my next birth. Do yourself a favor and give yourself the gift of Los Angeles Midwives' love and care. You will NOT regret it.

This was my first pregnancy and I was relying on Jennifer to guide me through birth. A couple hours after my contractions became constant and increasingly intense, I called her. She told me to lay down and get some sleep, that it would be at least 24 hours. When I asked if I should let her know when contractions reached a certain timing, she told me not to time them at all. I asked when she would know to come, and her answer was: "I'll hear it in your voice." Apparently that means when you can't speak then she'll come. Four hours later, I gave birth. During that time, I labored alone--scared, confused, and unsupported. Jennifer did not check in with me by text or phone. The doula Jennifer referred me to was also no help during labor. I called her 4 times to please come but she kept saying it wasn't time yet and only telling me to keep breathing over the phone. I felt helpless. Finally, after the fourth call she came and arrived at 10:30, by 11:20pm I gave birth. Jennifer didn't arrive until 12:30am--well after my baby was born. I was worried because she lived over 40 mins away but always told me she would be there. She reassured me she never missed a birth which is obviously a lie. Afterwards, when I tried to express how traumatic this was for me she took no accountability. She claimed she did everything right and only blamed the doula for not communicating with her. She also put the blame on me claiming my labor was just "too fast." She had always told me to wait until she arrived for the tub because she would set everything up. So everything we planned was pointless, I gave birth standing up over my bathroom counter. She said there were absolutely no refunds and never apologized for what I went through. I was robbed of my water birth experience. This was supposed to be a supported, empowering home birth. Instead, it was the most frightening experience of my life. I'm now terrified of ever getting pregnant again. I could never recommend Jennifer as a midwife she will not be there when you need her the most.

Johanna is never in a rush whether it be during her pre-and postnatal visits or with a question over the phone, she is always there and present when you need her. She is reliable, accommodating, always on time and keeps her word. Johanna's visits taught us so much and answered many questions that we never would have known who to ask them to. The prenatal visits made us so much more prepared as first time parents not just for a healthy and satisfying birth, but also with questions such as sleeping arrangements, breast-feeding support, pregnancy clothing, and postnatal support to name a few. Johanna seemed to know exactly what we wanted out of our birth beyond what we even knew, and made the birth experience memorable and very enjoyable. With her vast experience as a second generation midwife, she has seen it all and is full of options that makes her a truly one-size-fits-all midwife! Through the time we spent together, Johanna became not only a friend, but a genuine part of our family. As very strategic and prudent people, Johanna truly exceeded our expectations of what a midwife could be and the services she provides. We hope to have the privilege of using Johanna again if we have the blessing of another birth in the future. Words can't express how valuable and what a gem she truly is. Obviously, we highly recommend her.

It was Covid time and she tried to fear-monger me into taking the jab. If it ended in a miscarriage or an abnormality like for many others, I don't think she would have cared. I know that when she answers here, there will be the standard official narrative that they are safe and effective. Epidurals, Pitocin and C-sections are safe and effective, too. Why would anyone pay over 6500 dollars to a midwife if they trust the official narratives? Thankfully, Leslie at least agreed to consult me on the phone. I felt like it was only about the money and not about caring for a future mother. If something stands against your convictions and insticts, momma, don't let anyone fear-monger you to do it. So until we found Catherine I was going to an OB nearby and the contrast of care we received was massive. Our OB experience lacked a human, personal touch that we felt immediately with Catherine. She made us feel comfortable and at home in her office and in her care because she cares about getting to know us as people, but most importantly, she shows an honor and respect to the process of bringing new life into this world. She made us feel at ease and confident every step of the way, while also being a pleasure to interact with and be around. Catherine is easy going and makes every step of the process a breeze with her preparation and processes, which eased so much stress for me during my pregnancy. She is a strong communicator and has the best balance of bedside manner and technical skill. When we first met her to see if the chemistry was right, she took time to get to know us while also providing us with all the logistical details of payment and what to expect with appointments. Her office building feels homey and comfortable, a complete contrast from a sterile hospital environment. She is extremely knowledgeable and shared ample resources with us to make sure we felt confident with every decision at every step of the pregnancy. She is an excellent listener and problem solver, listening to all our concerns and suggesting thoughtful and practical solutions. She is the best at drawing blood, giving me the best experiences I've ever had with blood being drawn; not a single mark left on my arm. My pregnancy was very smooth with no complications, but if I ever had a question Catherine was only a text or phone call away. The birth of my son was also extremely smooth and fast, only having to push for about 1.75hrs. I credit this fast and easy birth entirely to being able to be comfortable in my own home and secure in Catherine's care. As I mentioned, this was my first birth and so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. Catherine and her assistant Rachael were absolutely incredible. They are both mothers themselves and were able to anticipate my needs and make suggestions that helped me be more comfortable and effective during labor. All in all I cannot recommend Catherine and Home Birth Service of LA enough!! If you're shopping around for a midwife, look no further. We plan to have at least one more baby and I look forward to Catherine being the one to shepherd us through the process again!
