We did a lot of looking around for midwives and did a few interviews with other groups, but decided on their team because they shared our philosophies on healthcare and their clinical experience was uber impressive. From our first prenatal visit to (most importantly) the birth of our beautiful baby boy, The Los Angeles Midwives delivered the high quality care we hoped they would. It's hard to put into words how much I truly love Naomi and everyone at Los Angeles Midwives. Naomi delivered my first baby in May 2020, peak pandemic, and before she officially started Los Angeles Midwives with Lillit. You can see my previous review - on Naomi Elizabeth Drucker's yelp page (I tried pasting it here.. but too long). While this experience had some differences, the care was the same. The home visits went away and I went to their office in West Hollywood. While a yelp review isn't necessarily the place I want to put all the details of my pregnancy, this feels like the one time you do want to overshare as this is a deeply personal decision to make and can be scary to commit to something that isn't 'the norm' (in America). I was hopeful for a home birth this time around (didn't pan out the first time around.. kids head was big and he didn't budge past 3 cm for a good 12 hours.. I tapped out and he came 20 hours later). And they say second babies come faster and easier, so let's GOOOOO. But, I had some unexplained pain (and by pain, I mean it was worse than my previously mentioned labor...) that persisted for 6 weeks before the doctors discovered I had a 7 inch ovarian cyst twisting my ovary and it needed to be removed at 34 weeks pregnant! After that experience, I said thank you no thank home birth.. I've had enough pain, I'd like to sign up for the drugs please. Naomi (& co) have two different OB's they work with should they need to be consulted and when this pain first started, she quickly reached out to one for answers. He didn't have any at the time. It wasn't until I received the results back on an MRI on my son that a 7 inch ovarian cyst was detected. I told Lillit about it and she was the one that said that's alarming and needs to be addressed. I ended up in the ER a few days later. Once there, the team at Cedars (and I mean TEAM, had 4-6 different Dr's on the case that discussed next steps and made a quick decision to get me into surgery. I'm grateful for that care, attention, and access - but annoyed that I had been to so many Dr.'s who disregarded my pain. It was my Midwives who heard me and ultimately flagged the problem. As I recovered from this, Naomi held the door open for me to do a home birth, seemed like maybe I could do it, even though, in my mind, unless this baby just slipped out of me suddenly, I was going for the drugs, but I was grateful I had someone who knew me, my heart, and was willing to hold that space for me, even if I wasn't. Labor hit fast, furious, and two weeks early. Naomi came and I was 7 cm (!!!). I made the call to go to the hospital because (if you're paying attention) thank you no thank you pain. 10 hours later I had a baby in my arms. So yeah, maybe I could have done it at home, but it was ultimately my choice and Naomi supported me through it all. Naomi and Lillit are building something incredibly special which makes sense because they are incredible at what they do. Lillit even came to see me after my surgery even though she had just had a long day herself. Midwives bring a different kind of care that is maternal focused and that's a strange, big, but subtle difference between traditional OB care and midwifery care. If you have even an inkling of wanting to do a home birth, or have a midwife support you through your pregnancy, labor, delivery, and post partum weeks - meet with them. Where do I even begin? My husband and I were disappointed with the level of care I was receiving from my OBGYN at the start of my pregnancy. Even though I really liked my OB, I knew I deserved (and ALL women deserve) better than the 5-minute super rushed, hyper medicalized pregnancy check-ins she had been offering me. Our doula had suggested we look into Los Angeles Midwives and from our very first Zoom meet-and-greet with Naomi and Lilit, we fell in love and never looked back. I cannot even begin to tell you what a magical pregnancy experience they provided me. They were endlessly present with me and reminded me to attend to my entire holistic self (physical, spiritual, emotional, etc) throughout my pregnancy. Perhaps one of the most powerful lessons Naomi and Lilit taught me was the importance of consent when it came to my body. That might sound silly (like, duh its 2023, of course consent is a thing), but until I was in their care, I realized that while every medical professional I had been examined by in my life never touched me without reason or without explaining to me what they were doing, I had never truly been asked if I was ok with someone touching me. Without fail, at every single pregnancy check-in with Naomi and Lilit, they asked "are you comfortable with me touching here/there/etc." Admittedly, I thought it was unnecessary at first. But by the end of my experience and birth with them, I felt safer and more in control of my body than I ever had in my life. And that is MINDBLOWING--- Los Angles Midwives gave me the gift of considering pregnancy, birth, and postpartum not as a time of vulnerability but as a time of intense support, power, and personal growth. You cannot put a price tag on that. As fate would have it, I tested positive for Covid 5 days before my due date and Naomi somehow managed to turn a nightmarish situation into a beautifully, meaningfully powerful birthing experience... Covid and all. She came to my bedside, more than once, while I coughed up a lung, to care for me and help me talk through my options. She was wise, fearless, thoughtful, and loving. She continuously kept my birthing desires and goals in mind (including my vision of creating a "red tent" to labor in in my hospital room, making placenta art on a canvas after my son was born, and finding a way for me to move and labor with an epidural without feeling glued to my back/the bed). Her calm demeanor, reassuring presence, and go-with-the-flow attitude all contributed to my positive birth experience. I cannot recommend her enough. If you pass up Los Angeles midwives, you are MISSING OUT on not only a phenomenal pregnancy and birth opportunity, but also on the personal empowerment and support you gain from working with them. My husband, son, and I have since moved to Chicago for work and the #1 reason I am heartbroken about leaving LA is that it means I can't have Naomi attend my next birth. I initially wasn't sure if I wanted a home birth or a hospital birth and wanted the flexibility to decide later. It's rare to find someone who can offer that! More importantly, the care I received from Naomi was some of the best medical care I've ever had. I felt supported and cared for throughout my pregnancy, labor and delivery. I can't say enough great things about LA midwives! I came to LA Midwives in my third trimester, freaked out about the prospect of having inexperienced and possibly unempathetic residents in the hospital room during my labor. I switched to their practice for my final prenatal appointments, my delivery and postnatal appointments. I loved my in home visits and personalized care. They even got my records from cedars for me and started a group chat with me, my partner, and our doula. My delivery was medicated but still empowering and magical because of Naomi. I had an in home (middle of the night) check to confirm I was in labor and then was greeted at the hospital desk by Naomi so we got to skip triage and head right into a dedicated room. Naomi and her team work well with the hospital staff who all know and respect them. I got the very best of both home birth and hospital birth worlds and know that I didn't have a traumatic birth because of Naomi's level headed non alarmist care. I started working with the Los Angeles Midwives late into my third trimester, and it was the best decision I've ever made. Naomi's expeditious, thoughtful reply to my initial email brought me immediate relief, and that feeling only grew after speaking with Naomi and seeing firsthand the quality of care this practice provides. I also saw Lindsay and Lilit for various prenatal/postnatal visits, and each visit was warm, thorough, and professional. Each midwife pored over my medical records and cared how I felt. I don't even know where to begin to express how much I love and recommend the Los Angeles Midwives! For my first pregnancy, as a first time mom, going off the beaten path felt like a leap of faith. No one within my circle of friends and family would ever entertain home birth, so while I felt confident in my choice to try for a home birth, I still felt hesitant to share our birth plan, fearing other people's negative or anxious reactions. The reason I felt so confident was because of Naomi Drucker and the care and support of everyone at Los Angeles Midwives. Giving birth is so natural and normal, but is so often treated as a medical emergency, creating a lot of anxiety and intensity unnecessarily. It can be really hard not to absorb that. Naomi's calmness and warmth made me feel so reassured and comfortable throughout my entire pregnancy, and I felt the same way with the other midwife in the practice at that time, Lilit. What really made me sure of the decision to go with the Los Angeles Midwives was their credentials at Cedars Sinai Hospital. If something were to go awry during my labor at home, we could easily and seamlessly transfer over to Cedars and I wouldn't lose my team or support. It made the home birth plan feel even more secure knowing that I could always transfer to the hospital if I needed to. Because I'm not anti hospital. I'm anti unnecessary interventions, which I really wanted to avoid for my birth. And my wish came true! I had my first baby at home and what an incredible experience it was! My nervous system was calm the whole time because I had such faith and trust in my team. I didn't feel any fear. Giving birth was not easy in the least, but it was free of anxiety and stress. It was so nice just being at home. I'm just so incredibly grateful. And fast forward 2 years later, and I just had baby number 2 at home with Naomi as my midwife and the entire journey was the same as my first. Everything was calm, comforting, supportive, positive, encouraging, special, empowering, I could go on and on. I was able to fully surrender to the process of giving birth because I fully trusted Naomi and my care team. I wasn't worried about anything, I could just focus on birthing my baby. Naomi & Lilit are a stellar team and I am so incredibly grateful to them for the magical birthing experience I had with their support. Half way through my second pregnancy I decided to switch care providers. I was under the care of an OB and I was feeling pushed into a corner and frustrated by the lack of individualized care. The OB was unwilling to compromise and even worse, I felt shamed for asking questions and challenging the status quo. I have always wanted to have a home birth, but was too nervous to commit outright.  I had heard wonderful things about Naomi from a friend, but the real drawcard was that both Naomi & Lilit are labor & delivery nurses and have midwifery rights at Cedars hospital. That meant that I could choose a hospital or home birth under their care, with no pressure to make that decision until closer to my due date. The level of care I received from the outset was exceptional. They are both experienced, knowledgeable, respectful and patient. They went above and beyond (I had food poisoning in my third trimester and Lilit came on a Sunday and spent half the day with me so she could administer IV fluids and keep an eye on the baby's heart rate and avoid me going to an urgent care).  After spending many months on the fence about whether we were going to birth at hospital or at home, I trusted Naomi & Lilit so much that it gave me the confidence to go after my birthing dream of having a baby at home.  It also meant that our 6 yo daughter could be present, which was really important to us as a family. When I found out I was pregnant I started looking for a midwife that could support both home and hospital births and I'm so happy I found LA midwives! Naomi, Lillit and Lindsay saw me for all of my prenatal appointments for an hour, answered all of my questions and made the pregnancy very low stress. We planned for a home birth but ended up needing a c section. They continuously checked in on me during my early labor, made multiple home visits and when I made the call to go to the hospital Naomi was able to continue my care there. She was there for me for over 24 hours and was an amazing support system. They only take a few clients per month so they are truly available for you when you need them. Even after we decided to go for a c section, she came with us to the OR and made a stressful situation a lot more manageable. Even though I didn't get the birth I had hoped for, Naomi's care made me confident in my decisions and led to an overall pleasant experience. After being turned away from the UCLA Midwives who cared for me during my first pregnancy for having a c-section (they were great, UCLA just doesn't allow it), I met with a few OBGYNs and simply was not satisfied with their level of care. As a Black birthing person, it was important for me to have, at the very least, adequate care given the Black maternal mortality rates. I was interested in doing my prenatal care with midwives again, but due to the events of my first birth, I was only interested in birthing in a hospital setting. I wasn't sure I could have both, but I researched and found the Los Angeles Midwives. While they provide non-hospital birthing options, they also have birthing privileges at Cedars Sinai. After attending a zoom informational with Naomi and Lilit, I decided to entrust them with my care. I was not disappointed. I went from having a 15-minute appointment with an OB who didn't answer any of my questions beyond one-word answers and rushing me out the door, to hour-long appointments where all of my questions were answered completely and I was the one rushing out the door to get back to work. I was also able to have an in-hospital successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) which was one of my goals for this pregnancy. I would (and have) highly recommend Los Angeles Midwives for your prenatal and maternal care, and even more so for Black birthing people who are statistically more at risk for negative birthing outcomes. What a life-changing decision! Naomi and Lilit are the most incredible midwives we could have ever hoped to find. They've now delivered our two children, and my wife and I cannot say enough incredible things about them personally and their practice. If you're expecting and/or are at all curious about choosing midwifery care, do yourself a favor and speak to them immediately. You'll instantly see why all of their patients rave about the experience. They offer first class medical treatment from conception to postpartum, are available 24/7 for issues big and small, have incredible experience guiding any type of birth you could desire, but the element that elevates them above so many standard OBGYN's or other midwives is their attention-to-detail and how much they care about every single new baby and mother. I honestly don't know how they find the energy, but it feels effortless when you're in their orbit. Our families weren't thrilled with our choice to bypass the medical systems where most US families feel comfortable giving birth, but once my wife and I began doing our homework (read Ina May's book Guide to Child Birth and watch the documentary The Business of Being Born to get started!) we realized how common midwifery care is in other leading countries around the world (and how superior many of their birth statistics are to the USA's). The more we learned the more we realized what initially sounded like a large expense of choosing private midwifery care was actually an incredible value for unparalleled medical care over almost an entire year when going through the enormous life event of welcoming a child into the world. We feel choosing LA Midwives is the best investment you can make in your growing family, one you will never look back and care about the money, you'll only realize how incredibly fortunate you were to be in their hands. Despite two births that each presented unexpected complications and were far from easy on my wife, we have almost nothing but positive stories to share about her time giving birth because of how amazing Lilit and Naomi were in guiding us through the turbulence. I can also say that as a husband watching from the sideline, there's no better feeling than watching these two women guide your wife through her most vulnerable moments, when things go wrong and you're both terrified. After two miscarriages, I had written off the dream of partnering with midwives for my third pregnancy. I had started off with an OB-GYN who specialized in high-risk pregnancies and things were going fine until a routine appointment in my second trimester literally left me in tears due to the doctor's complete lack of bedside manner and poor communication. After I attempted a restorative conversation with the doctor that went nowhere, I knew it was time to make a change. I listened to my heart - I had always wanted a home birth and wanted to be under the care of a prenatal team that centered the woman and believed in blending the spiritual, ancestral, and medical models of care for pregnancy. I researched and found Naomi Drucker and was instantly interested - her reviews were stellar and I loved the fact that she was one of the rare CNM's who had delivery privileges at Cedars Sinai. The initial home appointment with Naomi and Lilit (who had, at that time, just established their practice as Los Angeles Midwives) was great. Both of them have very different personalities but they complement each other wonderfully. My husband and I felt assured that there was nothing wrong with my body, that a home birth was not an option that was completely ruled out for me, and that Naomi and Lilit would be able to take care of me well, given any plot twists in the pregnancy, labor, or delivery. And boy was there a plot twist! At an ultrasound appointment at 38 weeks with the MFM that Naomi and Lilit partner with (Dr. Rad at Cedars), it was clear that I had a serious blood pressure issue (that was later confirmed as preeclampsia). Within hours, it was decided that I needed to be induced for labor immediately. The sacred and peaceful home birth I had envisioned was immediately replaced with me being hooked up to incessantly beeping monitors, IVs with all sorts of funky drunks (some admittedly more fun than I had anticipated...yayyy fentanyl) and a constant barrage of doctors and nurses in and out of my room. It was difficult to psychologically pivot so fast to "Plan B," but Naomi and Lilit's presence and guidance made the whole process infinitely more manageable. They, along with Dr. Rad and the entire Cedars Sinai L&D team provided my child and me with impeccable care throughout a nearly 3-day labor and postpartum stay. I pushed for 5.5 hours without medical intervention thanks to Naomi's and Lilit's belief that my body could do it, as well their natural interventions to encourage the process along. Afterward, when it was clear that my body was still in a preeclamptic rage, their check-ins and advice for continued care was invaluable. My experience with Naomi and Lilit was everything I wanted it to be - they were worth every penny (although I do hope for a day when insurance companies deem midwives legit and cover them). Every prenatal appointment with them was unhurried and thorough (and BIG bonus for home appointments!!!), they took appropriate precautions in a Covid environment without letting Covid damper the pregnancy experience, and the labor, delivery, and postpartum care - which could have easily been something we could have categorized as only appropriate for an OB-GYN team to handle - was perfectly handled with them in partnership with doctors. Los Angeles Midwives are the best of the best! I could write pages and pages of praise for this incredible team. I received the most wonderful care from Naomi and Lindsay throughout my pregnancy, and more specifically Naomi and Joanna were present at my birth, helping me bring my son River safely earth-side and taking such good care of us!! We were able to have a successful (and quick, 11 hours start to finish) home birth in the tub, but we were always open to a hospital option if necessary. I met with a few midwives to see what worked for me and I didn't stop until I had a strong gut feeling that I had found my team. Ultimately, I chose the Los Angeles Midwives because I didn't see their type of service anywhere else. They do not have a one size fits all approach, they work with mama and baby to do whatever works best for that particular family. I really appreciate that they have hospital privileges so they can be a part of our journey no matter what route we went down (home or hospital). They are brilliant, experienced, and hands on. I appreciate their temperament, passion, experience, and instincts. Somehow Naomi is able to blend a safe and medical approach with a holistic, warm, loving, positive, and nurturing mentality. I feel so unbelievably lucky that I found Naomi and Lillit to guide me through my first pregnancy and labor. They were truly incredible. I was nervous about doing a home birth, but they made me feel so strong and capable and safe. They were both very knowledgeable and experienced, the perfect combination of confident professionals and warm, open, empowering teammates. I felt completely comfortable asking any and all questions. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever written a Yelp review, and I'm doing it during the precious hours while my six-week old baby sleeps: I cannot recommend Los Angeles Midwives highly enough. Naomi and Lilit made me feel safe, seen, and supported throughout my prenatal visits, labor, and postnatal care. I was well into my third trimester when I finally acknowledged that I wasn't getting the personalized care I craved from my OBGYN, but my husband and I weren't ready to commit to a home birth. In Naomi and Lilit, we found a pretty magical combination of medical experience and expertise (plus Cedars-Sinai facilities and staff for delivery!) and real humanity and compassion. What a relief to never feel rushed through an appointment, and to be able to text or call a caregiver with questions and receive answers right away. My third trimester was SO much easier than my first and second, thanks to having access to Naomi and Lilit, and avoiding the stress of a doctor's office--especially during Covid. When it came time for delivery, Naomi and LIlit were in it for the long haul ... and it was a long haul! I think with another caregiver, I would likely have felt pressured to have a series of interventions beginning on my due date. Instead, we worked through those decisions together throughout the process to deliver a happy, healthy baby at Cedars on our own terms. We contacted them when we found out we were pregnant and from the first appointment to the last postpartum visit, they've been incredible. Here are some pros listed because there isn't a single con. 》They offer options. Whatever you're comfortable with, whether that be hospital, birthing center or home 》They have privilege at Cedars hospital (Super rare!) So if you need to transfer or would prefer a hospital birth, they will be your care 》Their backup doctor Dr. Rad at Cedars is very thorough and kind bedside manner. That's where we had our ultrasounds done 》Your vists have little to no wait time and they talk with you as long as you'd like (We did all home visits due to covid) 》They are personal and care about your family. They look at the whole picture. Children, home, partner, extended family support, mind body and spirit. They truly feel like family 》They take detailed notes about wishes for your birth and follow through 》They talk about postpartum often and what support you need and they check in on you frequently which is so needed during those first couple months 》Most importantly, they are non judgmental and support the woman I'm however she feels is best through pregnancy, birth and postpartum Forward to birthing day. During my home waterbirth I felt completely supported and cared for in every way. They held my hands, helped me with breathing techniques when needed and really empowered me. It was the best birth of my life (My sons was a 16 hr back labor birth with some postpartum/baby emergency). So with my daughters birth in February it was so healing. It was 3 hours and I had no tearing. It was the most perfect birth and I attribute it to their care throughout my pregnancy, my weekly care with chiropractor Dr. Berlin who they recommended and my choice to have another homebirth. I feel having two children is perfect for our family and I'm so grateful however I'm going to miss these women tremendously. read more
