The place was referred by the Hotel right next to it. Now I don't quite remember, but I believe you get a discount with your stay at that Hotel. I came here a couple of times. Food isn't all the good here, because they primarily use ground beef for anything. Actual beef with anything will cost you more than your average Mexican restaurant. Yet, their main hit here is half priced Margaritas Tuesday. It's so popular that it packs all the parking, including the Hotel's side as well. Not impressed. I guess I've had better too often for too long. If you've got a palate that can't handle too much spice and doesn't mind a tinny canned taste with your salsa, you'll be happy. If you prefer fresh, authentic (yes, really authentic) Mexican, not going to happen here. Price-wise, I walked out of this place wishing I'd gone to Taco Johns and saved a ton of money. Not to insult the service or the atmosphere----that was good. Just the food was the epitomy of midwestern mediocre. I'm hoping that it was an off-night and that we ordered crappy dishes----but I'm thinking not---my husband had canned mushrooms smothering his chicken (apparently it was a house special dish? really?) We were on our way to see Cheap Trick at America's River Festival June 2016 in Dubuque and my friends know I love nothing more than a great Mexican meal. They chose for me Los Aztecas Restaurant and immediately after walking in already loved the atmosphere. We were waited on by a lovely pint sized Latina named Dulce, Spanish for "candy" or "sweet", and her parents got that right. She was very attentive and friendly and took care of our table for 3. I ordered a 27oz lime margarita on the rocks which had this amazing neon green salt w/ a shot on the side. The presentation of the libation itself was worth the price. For dinner I had had Queso Fundido with Grilled Shrimp which was spectacular. This place set the tone for the day. Being rushed for time we didn't stay long but I am looking forward to returning on my next visit to Iowa in September. read more

Questioned my REAL ID when I was able to confirm date of birth - ext. I even said " go ahead and call the police dept" he then said he'd be right back. He then took it as far as walking away out of my site with MY ID. My date said he took it back by the computer and couldn't see what he did with it. But he did not ask anyone else about my ID and if it was real or not. Why did he need to walk away with my ID? Why didn't he tell me what was going on? I work in the food service industry and know it's very rare for a restaurant to have ID scanner so its safe to say he wasn't scanning it...Soon after he returned and handed it back without saying sorry. I understand having to check IDs but do not walk away with someone's ID and not explain what's going on. Also have the respect to say sorry when you are in the wrong. It was extremely upsetting and embarrassing for me. Also after talking to a friend she informed me there's a lot of scams that can't be done using someone's drivers license info. Just had lunch at Los Aztecas on Holiday Drive. Had the special and a diet soda. Total bill was $8 and change. Because I wanted to leave a larger tip than $1 and change I gave my server a $20 rather than the $10 I had in my billfold. He brought back $1 plus change. I told him I gave him a $20 and told him why. The server became very adamant that I gave him a $10. I told him he was wrong and he strongly insisted he was right. In my younger days I would have made a scene.....I left the resturant with the knowledge I would never return to any Los Aztecas. My message ..... A non-chain run by an all Mexican staff, Aztecas offers solid TexMex food, served in good portions by an efficient and responsive staff, at a reasonable price. Usually busy, but wait times don't seem too bad. Beware the Mariachi group on weekends- they can hover at your table making any kind of casual conversation impossible. Not my cup of tea, but others seem to enjoy. I prefer week nights. Also be advised that Aztecas does a booming lunch business, but a large seating area and a prompt kitchen seems to keep turnover at a decent pace. Aztecas is located on Dodge Street (Hiway 20) next to the Super 8 Motel, near Kmart. They have also opened up another location on the west end. read more

Why anyone would go anywhere else for Mexican food in Dubuque is beyond me. The food is delicious and authentic. The service is very prompt, and there's almost never a wait. The free chips and salsa hold you over while you wait for dinner, which usually is less time than you'd expect for a place so busy (ask for mild salsa if you have an aversion to cilantro or peppers). And the margaritas are the best in town. My favorite dish is the Enchiladas Verdes with green salsa - fantastic! The place can be loud, but it's perfect for a casual meal or for families. My only complaint is that smoke from the smoking section often drifts into the non-smoking area. read more

My mom LOVES this place. She and my dad go here on a weekly basis, it's cute. I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food but when I'm in the mood and I want it done right, I want Los Aztecas. Admittedly, they are probably along the lines of most Mexican-run restaurants so it won't make your brain explode but it will leave you beyond stuffed and extremely satisfied. This was the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever eaten in. The food was so tasteless I had to use quite a lot of salt. I don't care for cilantro although I don't mind a little bit and when I took a bite of the salsa I honestly thought it had dish soap in it. I asked if they had some without cilantro and they brought tomato sauce. The servers were curt and dismissive and they started vacuuming around our table while we were still eating. Came here on Cinco de Mayo. You know it a busy day so why not be staffed for it. Sat at the bar and took 30 minutes to just get chips and salsa and had to ask three times for them. Good food at a reasonable prices. I had the fish taco the first time and they come with refried beans, rice and three fish tacos and they were very tasty. They also have tacos, 3 for around $5 and you have your choice of beef or chicken and they were very good. A couple of warnings, the hot sauce are very spicy and I loved them but make sure you just put a little bit first. Los Aztecas on Dodge is not great. Service is very slow and waiters seem to spend more time standing around talking. With that being said, why can't anyone in Dubuque make a good Carne Asada! Frozen, microwaved, overpriced and sad food. We were shocked how quickly our food came to our table. I have reverse-engineered their mixed vegetables they tried to serve me: 1. buy $1 bag of frozen vegetables 2. stick a slice of cheese in the bag 3. microwave and serve! They tried to charge me $10.50 for grilled vegetables. My wife ordered the chicken fajita tacos(~$8). I received a plate of warmed-over frozen vegetables with cheese on top and the chicken was salty and obviously frozen too. We are in Iowa, there are fresh vegetables everywhere here and they have no excuse serving that garbage. "Authentically" cheap and frozen terrible food, never going back. One of the best mexican resteraunts you will find! Not only do you get great food at a great price with nice mexican atmosphere but the service is very fast also. Also, you get free freshly made chips and salsa with every meal! Whats better than that?
