What a great find in Galena! On the main highway in a strip mall, I was pleasantly surprised, walking in smelling all the freshly made products, including the tortilla chips were still warm, not greasy and delicious with homemade Salsas. The plate was covered with 3 fully stuffed enchiladas with generous mole'. Fresh lettuce and rice and beans which I typically don't care for. Had some pretty okay drinks and food at this Mexican restaurant in Galena. It helps there aren't many other restaurants with this cuisine in town to be honest. Los Aztecas II has about what to expect as far as strip mall ethnic cuisine it seems. About as forgettable as many others like it. The prices are also high for basic things. Coming here the first time it looked like another basic Americanized Mexican restaurant with expected items. It's got plenty of seating. There's way more than enough because it was almost empty on a weekend. As for the menu it's basic. The prices are too high for this. It's about $15 to get a margarita. They have a few flavors including mango and watermelon. It's about $18 for an entree. We each got the Create Your Own Veggie Combo, which is a choice of a couple items. Beans are okay and not made with animal fat. We got these with a bean burrito and a bean taco. It was a gas but not right away. The rest of the menu features familiar items like fajitas and stuff. Got to say it was okay as far as flavor. It's located in Galena Square. This is close to the state's only Piggly Wiggly. read more

We were staying at the Inn just across the parking lot, so we figured we would just walk over and see if they could fit us in on Valentine's Day. Thankfully, there was room because the food was delicious! We started with mocktails for the girls and a Paloma for me. Chips and two kinds of salsa were on the table quickly and then the girls ordered from the kids' menu (under ten only so this is their last chance!) and I got some shrimp fajitas. It was 'okay'. We came here for lunch around 1:30 on a Tuesday. They were not busy as we came after the lunch rush. Menus were given to us by the hostess as we were seated. Our server was by within 5 minutes of being seated. As we had studied the menu, we placed our drink and food orders at the same time. I ordered the Linch Combo and selected 2 Beef Enchiladas with Refried Beans. The ground beef wasn't very well seasoned in my experience. I added the hot salsa to it and that made it pretty nice actually. The refried beans were decent. My wife ordered the Lunch Taco Salad. While there was plenty of ground beef in it, like my enchiladas, it wasn't flavorful. She also added the hot salsa to it. Before adding the salsa, she noted that the lettuce was really wet and the bottom of the taco bowl was saturated. The Chips and Salsa came out right after our meals were dropped. So that was odd. But good news - the chipped were super crispy and tasty and the 2 salsas were great too. We both ordered Wine Sangria. There want any fruit in them but they were tasty. The menu here is Humungous. Something for everyone for sure. And it was I that they had lunch dishes at a lower price (~$10). read more

I live in probably the texmex capital of the country, Texas. You can throw a rock and hit 4 Mexican places. This place? This place is special. While visiting friends we stopped here before heading back to Chicago saying "I wonder how the Mexican is". Their flavors, portions, and service are on point. Their queso was awesome. Chips are great. Had fajita steak with veggies and was dumb how much flavor was in there. I am honestly not sure if I'm coming back, but if I do this will be my first food stop. read more

I ordered 1 cheese enchilada on a corn tortilla. I requested green Verde sauce instead of red sauce on the enchilada. I was told green sauce would cost more. Huh? For close to $5 for 1 regular sized tortilla with cheese to want to charge more for a simple green sauce was ridiculous. I stuck with the red and it was good. We shared orders of rice and beans. My in-laws own a cabin in Galena and it's often frustrating trying to get food with most of the spots being downtown with limited parking. I am glad this restaurant is outside the downtown area, they get 1 star just for not having to deal with the headache of parking. Before going further into this, I would consider this establishment to be TexMex/Mexican American vs true authentic Mexican. With that in mind... I really enjoy this restaurant. The food is cheap and good. Carry out was so quick! I placed an order in person and it took about 5 minutes. The lunch specials are only $6.99 (as of March 2021) and offer so many combinations. I've gotten cheese enchiladas, beef tacos, and beef tostada. I enjoyed it all. Was I floored? No. Was it pretty dang good? Yes. They are following COVID precautions and I did not have a problem with service for carry out or when I dined once before COVID. With there extensive menu, everyone is sure to find something they will like. I've liked everything I've tried. The high point for me are the chips and salsa and the low point was their pico de gallo. The pico lacked flavor and was a bit dry - it could use a little lime juice, but still tasted fresh. *Note that my food pictures may not look as appetizing as the food actually was, do not discount them for that. I have been a patron of Los Aztecas for years. The food has been exceptional is almost every case in all that time. Starting originally as a customer in Dubuque and then primarily at their Galena location (Los Azteca's II). Like all businesses in the early half of '23 they have no doubt been hit with the higher cost of ingredients and like many others, passed it on to the customer; which is to be expected. This being said, you would expect the same quality and portion size commensurate to the newer elevated price. I am sorry to say in several cases now for us since fall of 2022 this has been incorrect. I have held my reviews because things happen, items get over-looked, cooking staff changes, etc... Case in point. No matter how much my dinner partner and I plan to branch out on the menu, we seem to get the fajitas for two meal (Texas style) as a matter of course. This in particular, and most significantly has went from the $25-26 mark to $33.99 WITH the portion size being noticeably smaller and the fajita spices/flavor much much more sparing! Los Aztecas still offers a good meal, but I must confess for the elevated expense, reduced size and diminished flavor arriving at the table its got us exploring other options. Been eating at Los Aztecas since the first day they opened in Dubuque. Galena location has always been my favorite and has been the only one we'd go to after trying that location. We no longer live in Dubuque, so when I get to Dubuque we like to eat there. Went there Friday night with my mom who only wanted a glass of milk because she wasn't hungry. So I just ate. Got the beef Chimichanga meal and a beer. To my Total shock, the bill was $32, before the tip, and I was the only one eating! So after 20% tip, it was $38.43. For 1 person! WTF??? Outrageously Expensive this year! Very Sad to say I will no longer eat at any of the Los Aztecas. We stopped in this restaurant because we were so hungry from our trip from Chicago to Galena. Armando greeted us at the door, and he was our server. He was kind and sweet, giving us information not only about the menu but also answered some of my questions about Galena. My wife had a beer and I had Margarita's. My wife ordered Mexican Style Ribeye steak and I had Enchiladas Suiza which is one of my favorites with the red sauce. Salsa and chips were served before dinner and the Salsa was so good, I asked for seconds. Everything was delicious and the dinner was really filling. Holy Smokes! Did a carry out of Nachos Chicken this evening, as we were staying at Stoney Creek for the night. 8 minutes and they were ready, enough food for four, minimum. So much chicken and fresh veggies, plus chips and extra salsa. Food was excellent! We're packing leftovers for the next leg of our journey. We have tried the new Los Aztecas in downtown Galena twice and although the patio is beautiful and the restaurant is also nice, it is some of the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. Low prices, strong drinks and really good food. To start with, they are handling COVID pretty well, with outdoor seating, masks and very clean. We opted to sit inside and were by ourselves in the bar side of the dining room. All of the tables had plexiglass on them, we thought because the cleaning chemicals were too harsh for their tables. The chips were fresh and salty, the salsa was not too spicy, a chunkier style. Hubby ordered the enchilada meal and I did ala carte with one echilada, one chalupa and mexican rice. Hubby ordered a regular margarita on the rocks and I did a strawberry margarita on the rocks, both 12 oz. The one star ding was because of service. Hubby ended up with a frozen margarita and the super ranchero entree instead of the regular size of enchiladas. He also seemed to disappear alot, which was super annoying, since they weren't that busy. Very friendly, but his skills were quite lacking. The food made up for the lack of service, as these were some of the best enchiladas I've ever had. They were covered in layers of cheese, making a gooey mess when you were eating it and a sauce that wasn't too spicy/hot which was perfect for me. The chalupa was flavorful and tasted fresh, not like something frozen and nuked. It was all amazing and the drinks were so good, so yummy! Not sure why the low reviews, but we love Mexican and loved their food. And the entire bill was around $30 without tip, which is alot less than most of the restaurants downtown Galena. read more

We were looking for Mexican food in Galena, IL without fighting the crowds and parking downtown so we gave Los Azteca II a try. It is located in a strip mall on west highway 20. We were seated right away and menu's and chips and salsa were brought to us quickly. The salsa was really hot, so we asked for some milder and she brought us some. My wife had some questions on the menu and our waitress was happy to answer her questions. Our food came quickly and it was good. I ordered the Burrito Carne Asada lunch special, and it was as good as what I would expect at my all-time favorite Mexican restaurant- El Sombrero in Port Orchard, WA! Do you like Mole? I do!! I've tired chicken mole at many Mexican places including in Mexico. Of all the places I've gone in the states, this place has the best mole! (Ok mole is like curry so we all have different preferences..) Very tasty sauce, can taste chiles, a bit more sweet side but not overly like some place. read more

Simetimes it's the waitstaff that puts a restaurant over the top. Tonight's experience was made relaxing and "just what we needed" by our waitress, Esme. Nothing crazy, just a very relaxed, easy feeling. She was attentive to our needs without being obnoxious. We received our order and the little things we look for, water refreshed, etc was taken care of or inquired of. To add to the experience, food was good and nicely portioned.
