We ordered a Speedy Gonzalez (chicken taco, chicken enchilada with a side of rice) and a #6 (chicken chalupa, chicken enchilada with rice and beans). We added a side of sour cream. The sour cream was an extra 1.75. Both lunch specials were 9.00 dollars each. The chips and 1 side of salsa were free. We added another side of salsa for a 1.75. Overall, a good value for the portions and food quality. We really liked our meals. The chips and salsa are good here. I have been here in the past and it was not a good experience. This was a good experience today for a late lunch. Sometimes, you have to give restaurants another chance or another couple chances to see if they are a good place to eat.

The portions are good, the prices even better. Two entrees, a chips and salsa and a small side of queso for 30$ Quality is amazing so much better than any Mexican restaurant I've ever had. I got my food quickly and it was very busy for a Saturday. I absolutely LOVED the hand painted walls of the restaurant, lots of bright colors. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, I will definitely be back again next weekend!

Review Visit: December 22nd, 2015…read more Near perfection, in burrito form. Each town has a similar blueprint. Those staples include locally-owned: coffeehouses, ice cream shacks, a Chinese restaurant, and a Mexican restaurant. Almost every town has most of these, if not all of them. East Peoria isn't a large town, population-wise, but is sprawled out over a large area. This leads to it having quite a few of these staples and Tequila's is one of those staples. I've been here quite a few times, actually. The initial time was with my girlfriend, and then we came back for seconds a few months later, and then my sister wanted to come here for her birthday lunch. I will be mostly talking about the first visit but will include all visits in the overall narrative of the post. The buzz around Tequila's is that the food and flavor is fantastic. I heard the portions for the price were very generous and that you won't leave with an empty belly. This sounds like every other Mexican restaurant I've tried and I knew I would have to give this one a shot. It was a dreary and rainy day when we decided that we wanted to try something new without really having to drive far. Tequila's fit that one requirement perfectly. We arrived to warm smiles and friendly staff. As we sat there trying to decide what to order, we had our drinks and a huge heaping of chips and salsa placed in front of us. The chips and salsa may be my favorite and least favorite part of visiting Mexican restaurants. On one hand, chips and salsa are great. Then I hit the conflict point. Do I order queso blanco with it? I already know that I will regret how many chips I will eat. Adding in the queso blanco, I know I will go overboard with it. Melted cheese is so heavenly. After all these years, I still base what I order from these places based on the burrito I had from Pepper's in Port St. Joe in Florida. What I ordered at Pepper's was a giant burrito smothered in queso blanco. That is now my go-to meal and that is what I ordered at Tequila's. I don't recall specifically which burrito I've gotten here but looking at the online menu, it would be something like the Burrito Blanco. Again, with most Mexican restaurants, the food was out before the waiter had time to walk to the kitchen to submit your order. I still don't know how they make the food so quick but my hungry belly never complains. We had to give ourselves a moment to breathe as the chips and salsa had done a number on our appetite. Once we steeled ourselves for what was about to come, we dug in. It's not impossible to eat a big burrito that is smothered in cheese with your hands. In fact, that would be something worth watching someone else do. Or myself if I didn't have a beard. But no, this is the kind of food you have to eat with a fork. Which is probably for the best as you slowly start build to the point where you sigh and groan after every bite. But you can't stop yourself from eating since the food is so delicious. At least, that is my experience at Tequilas. My girlfriend was unable to finish her meal both times. She offered me her remaining food but I just looked at her bewildered. I am okay with waddling out to my car but she would've had to roll us home if I had another bite. Tequila's is really good food. Each time I've come here, I've regretted it about 30 minutes later when I question why my appetite thought it could put down all that food. But, it's an experience worth every bite... except that last one that pushed you over the edge. If you can't make it to Tequila's, check to see if there is a local one around you; it might just be the best belly-bursting place you've ever ate at.

Review Visit: October 21st, 2014…read more So much food. So many memories. El Mexicano is one of those places that was located in a weird spot. It was on the corner of a street away from a commercial district but not quite in a residential area. Tim, Matt, and I pulled up for an early dinner one evening and were greeted by some friendly workers. We placed our orders at the counter and took a seat at one of the few empty tables. There were a few others in the restaurant but due to the sheer small size, it felt packed with just the few of us in there. As with a lot of Mexican places, we had our food out in front of us before we even had time to really dig in to a random topic. Not only was it cooked exceptionally fast but the sheer amount of food was borderline nonsense for the price we paid. You gotta start somewhere, so I started by eating the extra goodies that came with my burrito. It was a combination of rice, refried beans (?) and some salad stuff topped with sour cream, I think. Scarfing down the sides was easy as the food was pretty good aside from the bean paste stuff. That was a bit dry. After priming my stomach for the main course by downing the side stuff, I used my fork and knife to cut in to the burrito. As is the norm at these places, the burritos are massive. Like, this is half the size of a loaf of bread. It's gut-busting sized. But, I was able to use my knife and fork to shovel down most of the burrito. I had to tap out at about 1/4 left as I just couldn't do it. The food was just too much. I think my meal was under $10 so to get full for that much is an incredible value in my book. The burrito was on par with the side stuff. It was good, if not borderline great. El Mexicano would've definitely been a place I would revisit if they were still open. It didn't help that we put down a ton of chips and salsa in between bites as well. I love chips and salsa. Matt was in the same boat as me. Unable to finish. Tim was the victor and put down all his stuff and then some more of the chips and salsa. The man is a beast when he wants to be. So, it was a sad day when I was doing some searching around on Google and discovered El Mexicano had closed. Here is a link to an article the local newspaper did on it closing, if you are interested. I was surprised to see it had been in the area for 16 years. At that point, it becomes a staple to the area.
