It's fine. I have to suppose that this place stays in business because the BBQ and water hole across the parking lot runs out of brisket. It was fine I guess. Nothing special. Nothing particularly outstanding but nothing notably bad. I would eat it again. But this is a plan C type place. We were quickly served. The menu has lots of options for a good price. The choriqueso (chorizo on cheese) was really good, the cheese was a little too thick for me but the flavor and meat were perfect. The crispy tacos are good and full of flavor. The toppings are fresh. The enchiladas are also very good. Our server was super nice and fun to talk to. Great service on an 8am Ash Wednesday visit for some breakfast tacos. Greeted immediately, directed to the front counter for to-go order. The young man behind the counter was very friendly, and extremely appreciative of the gratuity. The egg & bean tacos were large (ordered two, more than enough), coffee was a bit weak. There is a select menu of breakfast items on a small whiteboard when you walk in, I was hoping some other taco options, but "egg & beans" was the only one listed. I have tried this place three times now and here are my take aways. The food is excellent. Full of flavor and I can't say I disliked anything I've tried. Twice I went during the week and the place was fairly empty and got served extremely quickly. Once I went on the weekend after church and the place was extremely busy. Terrible fajita plate...skirt steak was tough. Not grilled probably roasted. No guacamole or cheese or sour cream. There was about 1/2 cup of beans and rice. It was served in a little plastic plate. Gristle was not cut away at all. My hubby was still hungry after his meal. I got the fajita quesadilla plate. My fajitas were like my husband, very tough and Chewy. I had to use a knife to eat. My rice and beans were cold. Also they were a very small portion. I did enjoy the flour tortillas they came with me, and the tortilla chips or homemade. They were cold, but at least they were homemade. The salsa was OK. I am a gringa, and it was not hot... We chose this restaurant even though the reviews were not real good because it was our first night in Harlingen, and we wanted Mexican food... Most other places were closed on a Sunday. I SHOULD have spent the big bucks and had the cabrito, but I did not. A sizzling shank went by - WOW it looked good. I had the chicken tortilla soup. I don't know how they made money on my $7 bowl of soup. They must have put the meat from an entire chicken in there. And then dumped a pound of cheese on it. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty! But holy cow, that's a LOT of big chucks of chicken (each the size of a jalepino, or larger). No little bits of floating shreds of chicken. This was FULL of chicken. The enchilada platters were good. This place was packed at lunchtime. We are glad we got a seat early. They were very busy. But the service kept up, so I was pleased. I don't care for restaurants whose menus have 200+ items - and this was one of those. Do 25 items well, not 200 items mediocre. But judging by the crowds, they like it that way. Came in and get seats with the family during the morning. Waitress came over and got our drink orders very quickly. She came back often to check on us for refills. That was great. However from the time we ordered till the time we got the food...we were waiting a long time! About 30-40 minutes!! And as I was looking around I could see other people with frustrated looks on their faces as well getting upset that they hadn't gotten their orders either. TERRIBLE. Ordered the chicken fajitas and this must be the only place on the planet that doesn't know fajitas are GRILLED. What I got was chicken that was roasted in a pan with some sort of sauce that I suspect they make in bulk and use for several dishes. My family was in the mood for some fajitas and my brother highly recommended this establishment. I remember the old Round-Up in Harlingen now closed for sometime and their famous "Fajita Botana Platter". Living in Dallas there are hardly restaurants with authentic Tex-Mex food so we were wanting such. This is the old Palmetto Inn location and raised in this neighborhood I was familiar with the location. To our surprise the "Fajita Botana Plater" was on their menu. yesss! Service was 2 thumbs way up, our waiter was phenomenal! There were 6 adults in our group so we decided to try the fajita platter for 4 risking there may not be sufficient to fill all 6 of us. When the platter arrived it looked fabulously delicious! Cheese quesadillas, nachos with beans and cheese melted,slices of sausage, and of course the fajitas. The fajitas were bursting with flavor and tender! The quesadillas and nachos were fabulous as was the sausage. Needless to say all 6 adults ate and there was left overs for a dinner snack. Reminded me a lot of the old Round-Up Restaurant fajitas. I was amazed at how reasonably priced the food is at this restaurant. Folks they serve "Cabrito al Pastor", I have got to try that next time! No seasoning, not grilled, or any veggies. The so called charro beans in the cup was full of pork skins, with hardly any beans, it was inedible. Service was less than just OK. My wife and I went here to try something new and were greatly disappointed. When we walked in we were not greeted, so were not sure if we get our own seat or wait to be seated (you sit where you want). After standing there for a few minutes I asked if we may sit where ever, which we did. We then waited for ten minutes for the drink order that never came despite having a high staff to customer ratio. Upon leaving i told the cashier and two other waitresses who were behind the counter "Thank you for the wonderful service" and left. Super cheap and the staff is really friendly! They always have really yummy specials and you can never go wrong with their fajitas! My dad loves this place- we go at least once a week for breakfast. There are a bunch of cool murals on the wall having to do with Mexican/Indigenous culture and Western Culture. We ordered, had to wait for 20 minutes to get the chips and salsa, and then, after 45 minutes, as my wife's meal was being served I was told the taco plate I'd ordered could not be served without tomatoes (I have an allergic reaction to tomatoes). I was asked if I'd like to order something else. Furious, I politely refused, but asked for refills on our water. That only took ten minutes to accomplish. I was then was asked twice more if I wanted to order something else, and was even asked if I was upset. We then got the check. Yes, they charged us for my wife's meal. Decided to take my mom and suegra out for a belated birthday lunch. I chose nortenos because they serve one dish that my suegra likes and she's a bit hard to please. So we went and honestly I've been in the industry practically my whole life and they left a lot to be desired. Starting with the wait to get a server. They sent a very sweet but very green server our way and out of his section if they even had sections. But I suspect they rotate and wherever the table is is where they go...anywho I digress the salsa was watery and had lumps of the secret ingredient chicken and tomato consume undisolved the chips were stale and days old at best warmed in the oven I'm sure. The rice well my suegra could teach them a thing or two it was bland and needed some serious help. The refried beans were awesome but enough bacon fat can fix anything. The charro beans were OK but I've definitely had better. We ordered a mix Botana for 2 for me and my bf my suegra got the steak ranchero and my gf and mom ordered the three meat combos. Now most of this was OK but they can't cook brisket for shit and it's filled with fat and if I'm paying for it I want meat not fat and gristle their chicken was mostly dry except for a few moist bits but the best part was the fact that for a Botana they gave us 4 slices of avocado and called it cuacamole so I ask for some more and they bring me some half browned half of a forgotten avocado and then charged 1.99 for it. When I tried to explain this to the cashier not only did she give me a nasty look because i didn't Spanish but she seemed completely annoyed and then when I spoke with someone else she explained it to the cashier and she very rudely stated in Spanish thats the way it's portioned. I nodded to the poor women so she wouldn't have to translate and paid my tab. The cashier honestly looked like a bitter ass women thinking I was just trying to be skimpy. But honestly I'll never go there again I could've spent half what I did there at taqueria jalisco gotten exponentially better food and been way more satisfied. I made sure to give my server a decent tip in his hand but I just hope they gave him the other part of his tip that I left on my card. He was probly the only decent thing about our visit. The chopped steak with mashed potatoes and gravy and vegetables was horrible. The plate looked good but tasted bad. First the chopped steak was mixed with some type of filler so there really easn't much chopped steak and itwas covered in a thick gooey brown gravy. The mashed potatoes tasted like caldo de res. They tasted as if they boiled a potato and mashed it up and added broth from the caldo de res. The vegwtables also tasted like cado de res. This is the worst plate i have ever eaten. I had decided to try lunch here because i rgought it might be better than breakfaast which was premade i had a pancake that tasted like it came from the frozen food section of a grocery stre, bacon also tasted precooked. Very disappounting. The worst thing of all were the busboy or waitet pushing a crusty, filthy cart dripping wirh ooze from dirty plates as he cleared tabkes. I have only seen this at some of the mexcan restaurants. Its gross.
