I can't help but roll my eyes when people talk about "authentic" Mexican food or lack thereof in Omaha. Family-run taquerias are owned and operated by folks who often feature family recipes passed on by grandparents and other relatives who came from Mexico and beyond. You'll find familia in the kitchen. If that doesn't make it authentic, I guess I don't know what authentic means. That being said, Big Bro and I tried Los Portales recently. We were underwhelmed by the flavors until we put on the sauces. Sauces are a perfect example of differences in preference, not authenticity. The ones at Los Portales were thinner than what I prefer, but the flavors were just what was needed. What one person likes, another doesn't. The presentations were beautiful and the portions were large. I had a gordita which I expected to love but didn't. The thick house made tortilla was tasty, but I discovered I like crispy better. We devoured the guac and chips, delicious. Big Bro ordered his go-to for Mexican restaurants, chimichanga but it was just ok. Adding sauce made it more flavorful. I found Los Portales while looking for something close by after a full day at the zoo. The restaurant is small and unassuming. There is a fridge with various drinks including Jarritos and Mexican Coca-Cola. You order at the counter. I ordered a Jarritos, Chicano's, and quac and chips. The food was all great. The portions are huge! You definitely get your money's worth. The quac was great and fresh. This place is 100% authentic. This meal was disappointing. I got a gordita (cactus, chorizo, potatoes). It was ok. I should have read the Yelp reviews first! It's just made from corn tortillas and was greasy and tough. My husband had a tilapia meal and was more impressed. The salsas are very good; hot. I think they used to bring chips to the table, now you have to order them. I can honestly say that this is one of the BEST burritos I've had in my life!!! Raised in Mexico and Southern California, I'm amazed on how I enjoyed my food! The carne asada fries (pico de gallo on the side) are like the Cajun style (so yummy) and they are very generous with the avocado slices on top of the fries. Paper plates and plasticware and some of the best food I have ever had. I ordered the Dorados Taco platter. I was feeling conservative so I went with the ground beef. I piled on the red sauce and the flavor bomb was incredible! They seasoned the meat like none other I have tasted. I had the flour shells which were slightly fried and not greasy at all. Amazing!! I wonder if their corn taco shells are homemade? They are thicker than normal, but they single wrap their tacos. I could the meat was made in house. I mean just look at that carnitas taco. We ordered: chicken burrito, sopes, fries, bistec con nopales, gorditas, enchiladas. We had some jarritos, sidral, and the agua de horchata is so good! Everyone loved the food! I was recommended Los Portales from a local on Reddit, their was a post someone made asking for suggestions on local Mexican joints. I tried there Flautas, Chimichanga, Pork Tamale in Green Sauce and a Al Pastor Street taco - this was all split between 2 people. Flautas are my go-to at any Mexican restaurant I am trying out, Los Portales flautas did not disappoint. The flautas I have had at different locations around Omaha have all been very thin, extra crispy, and lacking in meat. Los Portales flautas had more girth to them, filled with moist, flavorful shredded chicken and fried golden brown. They were topped with cotija, lettuce, tomato and sour cream and came with a side of beans and rice. The cotija was in fairly large chunks, I didn't enjoy that much, I was hoping for a little more shredded lettuce and sour cream on top but overall these were the best flautas I have had in the Omaha area. 4.2/5 The chimichanga, a favorite of my childhood, I saw a picture on there yelp and it looked delicious. My chimichanga was a fried burrito with only chicken inside, beans and rice were on the side as were the guacamole and pico de gallo, the sour cream came in a separate plastic container, it was advertised that shredded lettuce also came with the burrito but I received none. The flavors on the chimichanga were there, it was fried well but probably could have used another 30-45 seconds to get it that crispiness I expect. Eating it as a whole with the beans & rice, pico, guac and sour cream was difficult and something I have never seen before. I partially understand this as the hot, fried chimichanga could make the guac, pico and lettuce (if there was any) wilt or go brown but on the other hand having to construct a bite every time was not ideal. I would have liked if the burrito came topped with lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and Pico and the rice and beans be a side option, but that's just me. I enjoyed it for what it was. 3.4/5 The Al Pastor taco was delicious, it came with a homemade corn tortilla, little dices of grilled pineapple and onion and the pastor itself was seasoned and cooked well. I only ordered 1 taco but I do think this was my favorite item I got and will go back just for tacos in the future. 4.1/5 I grew up in California and my friends mother use to make 100's of tamales every winter. These tamales at Los Portales brought me back to those times, they were well constructed, great masa base, pork was juicy, my only complaint was a lack of the green salsa that was suppose to accompany my tamale. 3.9/5 With my order I got 2 salsas, a red kind of Rojo Salsa and a Salsa Verde. The red salsa was delicious, had a herby beginning with hints of garlic and ended with a medium spiciness. The salsa verde was also very good, especially when compared to other salsa verde I have had in the area, it was a bit watery but the flavors were there. They also have an ice cream bar with what seemed to be around 20 flavors, its an odd combo, Mexican food and ice cream but if you are in the mood or you have children this might be a fun treat! Los Portales is the definition of "Don't judge a book by its cover" from the outside driving by I would probably have never stopped in, but I'm glad I did and I will be back very soon. overall I would give them a 4.1/5 read more

Sweet little place that deserves top marks for food, portion size, service, and dining environment. It's a quaint but comfortable dining space with families quietly enjoying time together. This is a restaurant that appeals to many different groups -- most people were eating tacos and kids getting huge ice cream cones. We decided on entrees during our recent visit to try something different. The staff was very attentive and kind - we were welcomed in and thanked for coming while leaving, extra salsa and big glasses of water were on the house. The service was impeccable. Entree sizes were enormous - the mixed fajitas included more shrimp than you ever get in a high end restaurant. Can't recommend this place enough for a neighborhood restaurant. read more

Plenty of Yelpers are claiming this is the 'best authentic Mexican' restaurant in the city of Omaha. Today, I was finally able to stop by and see for myself if this was true. The parking lot is small and if you cannot find a spot in front, this means there are no more tables to sit at. The system is you walk up to the front counter and physically order your food, next to the ice cream offering display. Once you order, they will remember who you are if you decide to eat there vs sitting/standing off to the side to pick up a takeout order. I ordered the steak with jalapeño peppers that comes with rice, beans, and your choice of homemade tortillas (corn or flour). A table opened up after ordering and I'm glad the staff rush to clear off and clean the tables before you sit down. The wait is moderate and what has changed from past Yelp reviews is there are no more free Chips and Salsa given to you when you sit down. If you want chips and homemade salsa, there is a fee you pay when you first order. My food was very hot in temperature and a good bite was tasted due to the jalapeños. The steak serving is very generous compared to other similar restaurants in Omaha. The downside was there was a lot of fat on the steak I had to physically remove before I placed my mixture in the homemade tortillas and used the 2 different homemade spicy salsa as a dipping sauce. Overall, the food is good but it is not the best Mexican restaurant in Omaha. The dishes are very authentic but I was unable to claim what other Yelpers have stated in past reviews. read more

We ordered through Uber Eats and everything was delicious! I had a chicken chimichanga which was extremely flavorful. The chicken is shredded, super juicy, a little smoky with just enough spice. The prices are incredibly reasonable. The red and green salsas that come on the side are really good as well. Everything was fresh and well packed. Another gem in South Omaha, set slightly apart from the competition along little Mexico town! (24th street corridor). It's South of the Old Market, near I-80 and also very close to the Zoo. We typically grab a bite here before or after heading to the zoo. They have a full authentic menu, I think the best menu items are the torta, taco, and tamale. Standard service as you will find along 24th-brisk, efficient, and FAST. The house made tortilla and the complimentary bean dips and salsas are a nice touch. The chips and salsa to start are tasty, but beware to non-bean lovers, as the chips come served in Bean dip (which I liked). Salsas, a green and a red, tasted house made. I got 3 chicken street tacos ($1.85 a piece), stuffed full of tender, flavorful shredded chicken and topped with onions and cilantro. Highly recommend. Got avocado on the side. The food was so good that I forgot to take a picture! The shrimp burrito was so good that since I'm not from here I actually debated trying to take some home to freeze for another time. My husband got Asada and Pastor and said the Pastor was off because the pineapple was to sweet. A child said the beans were spicy but I thought they were mildly spicy.
