Los Rios River Runners - Enjoyed the scenery on the Rio Grande! - Rafting/Kayaking Near Me - Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico

This was a last minute addition to my recent trip to Taos. I was looking for a short, easier excursion on my last day in the area and the half day Orilla Verde raft trip was a perfect choice. This section of the river is calmer so its perfect for a relaxing float where you can spot wildlife and enjoy the grandeur of the gorge. You can opt to paddle a "funyak" on your own rather than go in the group raft. It's basically an inflatable kayak and my boyfriend and I chose that. It worked out well since there was only one other person in our group and they also chose a funyak. Check in is easy at the cafe in Pilar, about 20 minutes south of Taos and then you meet your guide at the gorge's visitor center across the street. Zac was our guide and he was a chill, cool guy but also focused on our safety and helped us navigate some shallow areas and one, small, class two rapids. He shared some stories about the river and its people and plant life. We got to see sheep climbing down the gorge to come drink in the river, a great blue heron and lots of ducks. It was a slow pace but that's what I was looking for. The funyaks were a little more challenging to navigate than regular kayaks (to me anyway.) They were lighter and seemed to spin and meander more. It was still a pleasant journey-just took a bit more concentration to paddle-especially with the two person boat we chose. Safety helmets and life jackets are provided and required. At the end, we shuttled back to the visitor center and our cars and Zac brought some apples, cookies and chips for the group. What a fun and memorable way to end my time in Taos. Los Rios is fun, friendly, easy to work with and I'd absolutely go again! Don't forget to tip your guide and also be ready to get a little wet, even on a more mellow trip. We opted for a special with Los Rios River Runners tours to do water rafting and dinner. We had a blast!! The water rafting is first so you meet up at their local office and they drive you over to the river where you unload and grab your paddles and life jackets. Then we floated the river, paddling our way along and being mesmerized by the immaculate views for about an hour. Then afterwards, we sat down to a nice grilled steak, with potatoes and salad. There was another worker that grilled for us while we floated so it would be ready as soon as we were done. You actually had two meal options, I got the steak, but V got an amazing tamale meal smothered with molé sauce. Both meals were delicious and filled us up. I highly recommend doing this. It was so fun and an overall great experience. Be sure to tip your amazing chef and guide. My first time whitewater rafting, so August is a good time for beginners. Whitewater rapids are rated from 1 to 4 as far as difficulty and danger of the water. Our run was rated a 2, 3 with a 1 in some spots where you would just float. Perfect to take the kids along with you. All the rules and "how to" was explained in detail before we got into the rafts. Shay, our guide, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and knew what he was doing when it came to steering our raft down the Rio Grande River. Towards the end of the run there is a separate company that takes a bunch of pictures of your rafting group as you come down the river. After we were finished with our run, one of the other guides took out a cooler and started setting up some snacks on the picnic table. He cut up a big watermelon, and had some cookies, and bags of assorted chip snacks. All in all, it was a fun day! read more

I highly recommend Los Rios River Runners. We did the afternoon racecourse trip. It was very easy to schedule. The directions provided in the confirmation email were very helpful. This was our first time to go rafting. My kids, 9 and 7 years old, absolutely loved it and had no problems with the rapids thanks to our amazing guide, Alissa. We rented 2 funyaks for $50 each from Los Rios. Pick up and drop off was super easy. Jo gave us instructions on inflate/deflate as well as using them on the Rio Grande and provided us with all of the necessary equipment (helmets, life vests, electric pump, and hand pump). In addition, the person answering the phones provided us with information on where to float, which was an absolute fantastic suggestion and great day!! This was our third trip with Los Rios River Runners. Last year (7-2018) we did an overnight float on the Chama. It was fun and relaxing. There were several people who chose to stay overnight and the entire crew did a fantastic job taking great care of us. Noah was the captain of our boat. We like Noah so much, we asked for him the next day to guide us down the Racecourse. This year (6-2019) we thought we'd get an early start and catch the snow melt. We did 3 day, 2 night camping and we asked for Noah. If your still pondering what company to choose for your river float, regardless of whether you want camping, relaxing or looking for an exciting experience Los Rios River Runners are the BEST! You can tell this company is a family unit who looks out for each other AND each guest. We drove over 400 miles to ride the river and camp, in route we had some issues with our vehicle. While we were camping, the front office took our vehicle to a reputable mechanic in town, had truck fixed and ready for our trip home. Who does that? Los Rios River Runners does! AMAZING above and beyond customer service! While we were riding the Racecourse last day, we ran into our van driver at each little stop happily greeting us. I asked him if he was following us, he said yes. He was watching over us in case we or our guides needed anything. While we floated down stream I continued to notice him watching over us. These guys truly work together as a family and you become a part of that while in their care. I can't say enough about Noah. He has expertly guides us through some very calm and rough waters. We decided to do the half day Taos Racetrack as that Tiffany had never taken a whitewater rafting trip and didn't want to commit to a whole day (and the class 3 rapids would be enough for a first timer). We arrived at the meeting point and had our safety briefing and loaded up on the bus and traveled a mile to the start point. Life jackets were issued and checked by the guides and paddles were issued as well. We were assigned a raft and guide who was very polite and gave a few pointers before we headed down the river. Our guide was a local that had been born in Taos and loved the area. Not only did he provide us with a great trip down the river, he shared his knowledge of the local geography, plants, animals, history, and events of the area. In short it was a blast and we plan on doing the all day "Taos Box" the next time we are in the area. If your going to be in the area make time to ride the rapids with these folks! read more

Just got home from an awesome FunYak trip down the Chama with guides, Dillon and Noah! Dillon spent lots of time with our group explaining techniques for navigating the rapids successfully and how to self rescue just in case! They both made our trip fun by joining in with stories and useful information. They did such a great job with our 3 meals a day. They met the specific food needs of a couple of our group with vegetarian and gluten free options. They were so efficient setting up camp and tearing down and allowed us to help but did not make us feel like we had to. We took the half-day speedway trip earlier this month and had a great time with this company. They arrived at the meeting spot on time and the guides were very friendly. While things occasionally looked a bit disorganized in terms of getting boats and guides to the right place at the right time, it all came together to make a great trip. Our guide was clearly a skilled rafter but also knew a lot about the surrounding area -- which made for great conversation when you're on a slower part of the river. This trip is great for beginners to rafting of all ages -- some good rapids to get you excited, but some down time as well. If you're looking for a crazier rapids experience, the Taos Box trip is what you want. read more

Not only did they give us an amazing ride down the Rio Grande, they shared extensive knowledge of local history and surroundings, fresh & delicious meals, and even friendship! Austin, Dylan, Elise, Eric, and Micah were our guides and driver, and they were all awesome. We arrived as a close-knit group of 15 celebrating Evelya's 40th birthday, and couldn't have asked for better companions to join us. The river was much lower than usual for spring; but Los Rios flowed with it and amended our plan (mid-box instead of upper; FunYaks instead of rafts) to create the best trip possible for us nonetheless. Big horned sheep, an enormous eagle's nest and ancient petroglyphs were highlights along the way. My brother booked an adventure with LRRR after he received some recommendations. This was the first time for everyone in our party of six. My three kids are 21, 16, and 11. They had a blast! Brian was the guide for me and my two older kids. He was so amazing! He has a real way with navigating the currents and turning the raft to make things fun and challenging and still very safe. Bradley was the guide for the rest of the party. He was very entertaining and shared a lot of knowledge. After the tour was over, snacks awaited us at the pickup site. I scheduled an all day trip for my wife and eldest child with Los Rios. I called to discuss their abilities, and they scheduled them for a Double Racecourse trip. The first time down Racecourse they go in a raft, then they have lunch, head back to the put-in and do it again in kayaks. My family is pretty experienced on the water and they agreed to let my daughter do some extra activities in the boat based on that. Our family was privileged to go on the dinner float with Alex as our oarsman Leo as our camp chef. It was the best rafting experience we have ever had. Alex was an excellent oarsman and fun to be with as you floated down the beautiful scenery. Leo fixed us an epic dinner of local favorites that was ready for us when we got to the pull out. We took the relatively tame Native Cultures and Feast float on the Rio Grande. We had two guides, one to row and a young Native American guide who talked about her life at the Pueblo and showed us objects they use in ceremonies and every day life. We aren't great swimmers and the river was running high that day, but Los Rios took great care of us and avoided the rough spots so I felt safe and well cared for. It was great to drift down the river and spot animals on shore that the guide pointed out. After the float trip we shared a yummy traditional feast cooked over an open fire by the Native American family that runs this venture. Food included red chile stew, squash, fry bread and herbal tea. After lunch we were treated to wonderful candid stories about modern Native American life, including the challenges they've faced and how they've managed to maintain their cultural values and overcome adversity. This trip was one of the most memorable things. Our guide Richie Parrent was probably the best person to be with during this trip. I fell out of the boat and he did not hesitate to help me out and held on to me until he was able to pull me back in. If I ever have the guts to do it again I would probably request to be in the same boat as him. He knew what he was doing and it is was clear. I took my twin teenagers on this rafting trip as a father bonding time in the great outdoors with Los Rios River Runners and it was everything I thought it would be, but a thousand times better. Dillion and Drake were our guides with Gia as an assistant and awesome cook. These guides were beyond excellent! Dillion was absolutely outstanding with knowledge of his craft--white water rafting--as well as this scenic and sacred area of Taos, New Mexico. We had 2 incredible days on the Rio Chama River (using the Funyak at 600 cfs) and 1 day on the Rio Grand Racecourse (using a raft at about 200 cfs). Camping, talking, learning, and soaking in the pleasant scenario was unbelievable. I can't thank them enough for this incredible journey and seeing God's creation up close and personal on the beautiful waters of Northeast New Mexico. Thank you, Cisco, for pairing us up with this dynamic duo of a team! This was my 2nd rafting trip with Los Rios River Runners.
