We hired a guide through TFP for myself and two teenage boys who had zero experience fly fishing. Evan was our guide for the day and he knew exactly where to find fish even though it wasn't the best time of year for fly fishing. As he demo-d the process he caught first cast. Within the first 30 min two out of three of us caught 3 or 4 fish. We continued to catch all day long to the point where we lost count! There were portions of the day where I caught back to back to back. As a group we easily caught over 50 fish. Most were small and recently stocked but our goal was to catch fish. Evan spent lots of time not just helping us through the process but also educating us about the fish and how to pinch the barb on the hook so we wouldn't hurt them and yank skin out. We not only had an epic adventure but we learned a great deal too. There were some modifications due to COVID and we had to provide our own lunch and drive our own car out. We also had to wear masks when in close proximity. The modifications were reasonable and felt very safe. read more

What a great staff and just the best experience for either a seasoned or novice angler. I decided to book a one day guided trip and we fished the faster water of the Rio Grande. I've fished all over Northern NM as well as NW Arkansas but I've always stayed off the Rio Grande just due to the faster water. I just didn't want to learn a new technique but I just went for it. Excellent Experience. We booked a 6 hour Fly Fishing Trip with Taos Fly Shop and could not be more happy with our day. We were warmly greeted by Ron who fit us with waders and boots and we made our way to the Red River Canyon (about a 30 minute drive from the shop). Ron asked what we wanted to get out of the day and we said "to just catch a few fish" and a that is just what we did and by a few I mean 18-20 between the both of us. Ron was patient and taught us the correct way to spot fish, cast, re-cast and set the hook with a fly reel. He did not fish himself, but focused on ensuring we were having fun and learning how to fly fish. Even caught a 21-inch Rainbow Trout and took tons of pictures of it. Ron was happy to shoot a few pictures of us as well and i must say, he is a good photographer. If we ever make it back to Taos, we will work with Taos Fly Shop hands down. The service during the booking process was easy and they were extremely flexible in accommodating the weekend we planned our visit. If you visit with them, you won't be disappointed! read more

What an amazing example of people who are passionate about what they do and treat people like friends the first time you meet them. We were coming from Texas to do our first fly fishing excursion and our guide was coming from their sister shop in Santa Fe.He set us up to get fitted in Taos at this shop since we would be there anyway. That's where we met Emily and her buddy that has blonde hair and looks 15. Right away we knew we had placed our fishing vacation in the hands of good people. Even though our guide was from another shop Emily took the time to handle all of our needs. She spent a lot of time with us and honestly restored my faith in humanity. She is so down to earth, patient, and accommodating which is so surprising in today's world We even went back the next day just to hang out and talk to her. Not only did she give us good advice on gear she gave us an insight into all the happenings in Taos. Great day with guide Brian Spilman. Really super knowledgeable guide and a very patient teacher. I'm pretty new to fly fishing and my primary objective (aside from catching fish...which we did... a lot), was to learn as much as possible and hone in some new skills. Brian was extremely patient as my line found trees, rocks, etc. Even better was his knowledge of the area and the local habitat. He's been guiding in this area for over 20 years and is an excellent resource for understanding this naturally beautiful area, obviously in addition to fishing strategies, reading water, different casting techniques, etc. As the day went on, the weather got pretty nasty late in the afternoon...but Brian never flinched. I finally asked him if fish really bite in torrential downpours, to which he responded..."not really". I'm hoping to sync up with Taos Fly Shop and hopefully Brian in the near future. read more

We did their 3 hour intro special and it was perfect. Our guide Derek spent the first part of the morning giving us the absolute basics in the shop. We then got fitted with gear and headed out to the Rio Grande. Derek was both informative and patient throughout our lesson and we walked away feeling like we had learned enough that we want to learn more.
