Good Lord. Why has no one told me about these pies before. I got some kind of mixed fruit pie and it was to die for, and that's saying something coming from someone who isn't fruit pies at all. Anyway, back to this little market - street parking was easy enough for me, I didn't notice a dedicated lot anywhere. I arrived toward the end of the day and some of the vendors were starting to pack up. I saw the standard locally grown veggie stands as well as one selling crocheted items, butchered meats (or was it fresh fish?), mushrooms, ceramics, home baked dog treats and sweet little bandanas for your furry family members, among other things. It was calm and quiet, no pressure from the vendors, and just enough variety to warrant a stop in if you are in the area!

Situated near a #4 bus stop by the New Columbia neighborhood, the market offers fresh veggies at good prices, bulk foods (including several Bob's Red Mill items), general pantry items, and some houshold needs. It also has a deli, but I haven't tried that yet. Village Market is operated by Village Gardens, so you know that whenever you spend money at the market it is going right back to the community to help create a better food environment for everyone. I'd get the "fancy creamers" on Fridays for our participants' never ending appetite for coffee, snacks for myself and my coworkers, and fresh veggies and fruits to enhance the food we had at the shelter. What started as a trip of convenience became one of my favorite parts about coming to work. In its layout the Village Market has the prettiness of a Whole Foods and the spatial logic of a Manhattan Bodega (minus the Bodega cat). But the fresh and culturally correct offerings on its clean, smartly presented shelves are priced way below anything in NYC or Whole Paycheck. It's a freaking gem of a store. The staff (all of whose names and pronouns are listed below shining, colorful photos of their faces on a wall near the dairy section) display the ideal trifecta for corner market employees: genuine friendliness, helpful knowledgeability, and a pride in their establishment that brooks no bull. Shout out to Mo in particular, who read me cold for being a white boy wearing indigenous Arabic pants and having an Arabic tattoo, but then also taught me a new word and let me practice some of my language skills which had been slacking. Village Market is quality products that I loved bringing to our participants at the shelter, and quality people who care about their work and their community. Since we left the Charles Jordan Center, one of the parts I've missed the most is this place. It seems to me the neighborhood feels richer and lovelier for it, without feeling more expensive or elitist. That's a win.

With the help of the person behind the counter, I settled on the coconut. I'm so glad I did. The next day, on my actual birthday, we pulled the cake out of the fridge and cut into it. It was dense, but not heavy. Sweet but not teeth achingly sweet. Well balanced flavor and an overall delightful cake. Other than bread (olive ciabatta FTW) I haven't gotten anything from the bakery. I will definitely be getting my cakes from this store again.

I randomly found this gem while looking for things to do in Portland. I found parking on the street…read moreright outside of the street that The Belmont Goats were on as per the website to not park on that specific street. It's free, but donations accepted to help out with the goats. The people running the place were friendly and informative. I was able to pet and brush the goats. The goats were cute, and I enjoyed getting to spend some time with them. :)
