Since Ronzoni discontinued pastina (Italians penicillin,) I've been trying to find Estrella (stars) pasta at Mexican grocery stores. It's the same tiny star shape so basically the same thing. Clearly I am not the only one seeking this substitution as most Mexican grocery stores I have visited are out of Estrella, including El Campesino. But since I was there, and I love cooking Mexican food, I had to check out the little market. They have a section with panty items, snacks, produce, veggies and candy. Plus a deli where you can buy meat, cheese and hot items like whole roasted chickens, carnitas by the pound and a variety of salsas. I'm so glad I decided to stop in, I discovered a little gem! Picked up tiny alphabet pasta until they get the stars and a few bags of dry peppers, some spices, and some of the orange/red homemade salsa, the hot one. Soooo good! I'lll definitely come back for the carnitas by the pound so I can make my own tacos at home, easier! and that roasted chicken looked so good! Since I got there late, there weren't that many pan dulce left but typically they make a dozen plus varieties a day. Service was friendly. $5 min for credit card purchases. They have their own parking lot. read more

This little market is packed to the rafters with Mexican delights. I always buy the bake shop stuff. It's always fresh. I have bought their Carnitas. They're pretty good. The cicerones are excellent. The music in that atmosphere in there I've never been to Mexico, but I would think this is what it would be like! read more

I love this little market / bodega! First off, the owner is the nicest guy in the world; I feel really good supporting his small local business. They have my favorite canned Jalapeños which I can't find anywhere else. On Sunday they roast chickens in the parking lot, stop by after 11. They are incredibly delicious, plump, and well worth the price which is more than the sad roasted bird at Safeway. Oh, and there's a really great panaderia pastry selection. read more

Not sure if they need new management or what but the produce was all rotten and moldy. Meat was way over salted, almost inedible. Giving two stars for the fresh tortillas. The rest of the store was a mess as well. read more

Great friendly service and selection. Walked away with pollo al carbon, three types of tamales, jars/bottles of salas, and actually hot serranos- we've been unable to find anywhere else that reminded us of 'home'. I stumbled across this cute Latin American market in my search for the attached Mexican/Peruvian restaurant, Salt & Pepper. Although they aren't as big as The Portland Mercado a mile away on Foster, they have all the basic staples (fruits, veggies, meat, cheese, non-perishables), and even hot deli style food like chicharrons. The staff was really welcoming & friendly, and helped me pick the perfect plantains for home made Maduro Platanos. It's worth checking out if your nearby! read more

This family run store has it all! I came in looking for chorizo and bolillos for an upcoming get together. They make their chorizo in-house and have a lot of great looking options in the meat case. They were able to accommodate 2 dozen bolillos and they came out fresh from the oven! They were still warm by the time I took them home. Their salsas are stellar and they have a great selection of food I can't wait to tackle. I was super happy to find a wide selection of dried chilis as well. I'm looking forward to this becoming a regular stop! read more

Small Mexican market with fresh salsas. I usually hit this market up for tomatillos, poblanos, cojita cheese and I love their green avocado salsa. It's spicy and hits all the right notes. I also just bought some of their Asadero cheese, which is mild and melts well. They had a chipotle one that I would like to try the next time I am there. Especially now, I will make the extra stop to shop locally to support our community markets. If you're in the neighborhood and need just a handful of items, stop by and check 'em out. read more

Let's get down to it. Los Campesinos is a great little Mexican tienda. Inexpensive and with a decent selection. Good veggie/fruit selection. They also have a small butcher shop in the back, with chorizo and other meats. Is it the best selection of mexican products out there? No, its small. But they do have the basic mexi products, and their pastry selection is killer! They also have almost every Jarritos you can imagine! Enjoy! read more

This market is attached to the Peruvian/ Mexican Restaurant 'Salt and Pepper'. Unlike the restaurant, it's open most of the time. I was in the neighborhood at ABC seafood and I needed some chile pastes for some Peruvian dishes that I'm attempting, They had them as well as good looking produce, meats and frozen goods. Friendly folks. This may become a regular stop when I'm at ABC. read more

Hidden gem right off of Powell- they are a bakery, deli, grocer, and corner store all in one- I came in looking for a very specific kind of bread and even though they don't normally make it, Nancy offered to put in a special order for me for the next day. We moved to Portland from NYC last summer and have been trying food places all over. I stopped by this market to pick up some Colombian goods originally and have been stopping by from time to time. Recently have been attending church up the block so I wanted to check out the Peruvian restaurant located inside the store but unfortunately it was closed at that time on Sunday, but I noticed that they had some chickens grilling outside over charcoal. I asked if they were for sale and they were. I bought the whole chicken with the rice and beans and homemade sauce, and didn't eat much of the rice or refried beans but THE CHICKEN WAS AMAZING. It's perfectly cooked and juicy and the chickens are pretty big, not like a Safeway rotisserie. They are super flavorful, maybe a little citrusy, perfectly marinated. Ever since that Sunday we've been buying the whole chicken and we have it for dinner, and it lasts us for meals through out the week. We make sandwiches with it too. It's just so good. Hope they keep making this perfect chickens every Sunday. We've been disappointed by a lot of the food we've tried here and there, so when something is done this well it's really appreciated. read more

This is a lovely family-run store that stocks tons of great food. The owner was very friendly and helpful, engaged us in a nice conversation about his experiences in the U.S. and teaching himself English. He gave us a free container of fantastic homemade salsa. We were very impressed and happy to try this place. We will return to also try the Mexican/Peruvian restaurant just upstairs from the store. Highly recommend this place. read more

This little tienda excellent! They make their own chips and they make their own salsa from scratch with all natural delicious ingredients. The parking is not great, but don't give up. They also have pretty amazing pinatas as well as all of the other Mexican fare you would want. read more

Let me count the ways: stone ground salsas, homemade tortillas at a buck a pound, homemade loganiza at 3 bucks a pound, homemade tamales for 1 dollar a piece, dried herbs, peppers, spices, flowers, specialty butcher, carnitas made in house, quality fruits that aren't constantly diluted down with sprayed on water and chemicals, and all of it cheaper than any grocer in town. Let me put it this way, any place where the wife of the owner wakes up at 4 am on weekends to make handmade tamales, then sells them for a dollar and 2 bucks for a pint of handmade salsa, is worth the drive to 66th and Powell. read more
