While it's a retail market with fresh fruit and veggies, a high quality butcher counter, deli, pantry items, spices, grains and beans, and premade meals, the bulk of their business is supplying to hundreds of local restaurants. During and after Covid, many of these restaurants went out of business which affects the entire supply chain. Sheridan's has suffered. Additionally, suppliers have raised their prices and residential shopping in the area has greatly decreased. All these factors combined have had serious consequences to this once thriving market. Sadly. When I stopped in earlier this month to buy escarole, a green leafy veg for Italian wedding soup, I was shocked to find most of the shelves bare. I was heartbroken, actually. This gem of a store has enabled me to make all of my favorite Italian dinners because they carry ingredients that most other stores don't. I'm from an Italian family and lived my entire life in NJ until moving to Portland in 2000. The first fall, when the weather chilled and I was craving Italian Wedding Soup, escarole was not available anywhere. Thankfully I found Sheridan's and have been a loyal customer ever since. I am doing my best to support them by buying my produce and veggies there, plus whatever other items I can find that I need. It is challenging since their shelves are not stocked, which means I buy what I can at Sheridan's and supplement from another grocery store. But that's what you do to help a business in need. Please, if you live in the area, buy what is available and help them through this very difficult time. Sheridan's is such a gem and it would be a tremendous loss to Portland to lose this market.

Fresh picked bags of lettuce, cucumbers, sweet peppers, red onions, all sorts of potatoes, carrots, green beans mushrooms, cauliflower, cabbage - everything you would find at the grocery store but better prices and higher quality. Even blueberries, blackberries and strawberries. I can't wait to see how the produce evolves once spring and summer arrive. In the small freezer are frozen pies made with fresh fruit from Willamette Valley. some fresh pies are also available in small and large sizes. While there you can also pick up milk, yogurt, cheese. Cottage cheese, and eggs making this a one stop shopping experience. They only have 1-2 varieties of each, but they're the brands I like. So happy I stopped in. When I go to Trader Joe's down the street, I'll stop here first for my fruits and veggies and the eggs which are just $4.99 and local.

World Foods doesn't carry the ginormous container of pitted Kalama olives that the mothership Barbur Whole Foods does. But they do have excellent customer service and and will transfer a jug from Barbur to Whole Foods for me. They also sell Arz labne which I can't find anywhere else convenient in Portland. Certainly not at a conventional grocery store. They also sell all kinds of other international groceries like giant jars if dolmas, lavash, the best chocolate bars. I could go on and on. Walking the aisles makes me feel like I'm in a different country and it's fun. There's not much in the way of parking. Most people in the Pearl probably walk there. I know I do. I lived walking distance from People's Co-op circa 2004 where I lived right across from the now defunct all vegan coffeeshop aka Red and Black. In 2004-2005 I was a working member cleaning the bulk bins as my seva aka service. This is where I first started teaching yoga at the community room upstairs at People's Co-op. Dusty started the program that sadly is no longer currently active. They had some great classes there and have fond memories of a Iyenger influenced yoga teacher that taught classes I liked. This was when I was teaching classical hatha yoga and had not yet shifted my yoga teaching to the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition. Fast forward to the moment of Jun 20223. It's the return and went to People's Co-op. It still is an amazing place. They have a farmer's market here every Wed. Their bulk selection is amazing (see my photos) and so is there produce. Friendly and helpful staff. Afterwards go to Belmont for heaps of plant based, vegetable forward, tasty, amazing vegan restaurants and food trucks that are amazing. Vegan bars, vegan food trucks, innovative vegan restaurants like Fermenter, and more that will satisfy all folks who follow whatever diet from vegan to paleo to gluten-free to omnivore.

In support of sustainability and buying just what you need, they have bulk grains, nuts, seeds, and spices. Produce, milk, eggs, cheese, cereals, healthier versions of packaged mac&cheese, rice and noodle dishes, and other pantry items. They don't sell meat Since they are a vegetarian and vegan market. Specifically, I was looking for puffed quinoa, but they did not carry it. No one seems to! On this day, the adjacent parking lot was in use by their Wednesday Farmer's Market. Since I was already there, I ventured through. Huge bags of shredded carrots, prepackaged bags of chopped salads and other produce nearing expiration date for just a $1. I grabbed two. Containers of cut up watermelon, cantaloupe as well as whole bananas and other produce very cheap. Picked up an onion to use for that night's dinner. Didn't want to buy anything I couldn't use immediately as these veggies are a day or two away from going bad. Shelves and carts filled with canned pantry items, cereals, breakfast bars all nearing expiration - good for families that go through these items weekly. By the checkout there were some Chocolove and Theo chocolate bars. These are high end chocolate bars that usually sell for $3.99 a bar and here they were just a $1 with an expiration of Dec 2021 so I picked up two. That alone was worth the stop! Items move fast which is why the store is in a constant stage of unpacking. Huge outdoor area with produce located close to street - don't forget to check it out. In addition to produce they had 6 packs of bottled water, huge containers of pretzels, bags of dog food and other items.. Very random, no rhyme or reason, seems like items are placed where there is room. Friendly owner and staff, everyone chatting with everyone; clearly there are lots of regulars. They take credit cards. Parking out front. I missed the turn into the lot so parked around the corner by the Goodwill and walked over. This store is exactly what it is. A market that takes in items close to expiration and liquidates on the cheap. It's not New Seasons! So as long as you set your expectations and you have a need for these type of items, it's all good. For me, this was a one and done.

Truly fantastic smoked wild salmon and other fish sold at two of Portland's farmers markets (PSU on…read moreSaturdays, Hillsdale on Sundays). The Smokery offers some of the very best smoked salmon in the Pacific Northwest. Our favorites are the Old Irish salmon and the sweeter Maple Wine salmon, both hot smoked and absolutely delicious. The Smokery also offers a very fine Classic smoked salmon, a sugar-free Simple smoked salmon, at least a couple of kinds of peppered salmon, as well as cold-smoked lox and hot-smoked sable. Up until now the most flavorful smoked salmon we ever ate was at a small oceanside shop in Tofino on Vancouver Island. The Smokery's smoked salmon comes in a close second. The Smokery is run by Michael and Rhona Jacobs, both from the East coast of Ireland. They brine their wild salmon in a blend of natural ingredients, then gently smoke the fish over hickory and mesquite in small batches to insure freshness. Every time we've purchased fish from them it had just been smoked earlier that week. I can't rave enough about how good their smoked salmon is. The Smokery is yet another small, family-run Portland business producing outstanding, world-class food.
