Perhaps the steamed bao buns served in bamboo steamers are a nod to their street food roots. I don't know what coffee beans they are grinding here but their coffee ranks among the best I have ever tasted. Hats off to the Barista. The mood in the bar is chilled, with nice mood lighting, good tunes and board games and books to use at your leisure should you want. There's even a microwave which you can use if you bring in your own food to eat! The kitchen bar is open during club hours too, so if you don't feel like dancing you can head on in to the kitchen and chill and/or eat and/or drink and/or play some board games at 2am!! The club is just as unique. there's parts of old furniture attached to the walls, lots of subtle nods to "The Big Lebowski" everywhere and lots of places to sit. There is a big quirky bar with all the mod cons including that lovely vintage tv playing some obscure Japanese films, of course. There's a big no frills dance area, complete with a wardrobe in the middle of the floor to dance around. There's not much in the way of flashy flashy lights, instead they have projections bouncing about the venue providing lighting changes and blasts from the pasts in the way of old footage and stuff. I've seen people stop dancing to reminisce at what they are seeing on the big projection screens. There is a nice set of standard lamps around to supply extra lighting around the tabled ares too. There is space for fowk to dance and sit and mingle with out feeling like a club, even though it kinda is. Friday and saturday nights see a good varied selection of club nights from 90's themed ones with bingo to indie stuff to b-sides to rawk to funk and everything in between. It's the kind of small cafe that I really hope succeeds, but given that they're location is just a little out of the way, they're going to have to work hard at it. Their menu will probably do the trick. Java Jess is quite different to other cafes and coffee shops I've visited in the city centre. For a start, there's a strong Indonesian influence for the food. I got a baguette filled with "award winning" Indonesian meatballs in a spicy peanut sauce. Yes, it was as good as it sounds and astonishingly filling. Even so, as I waited for my espresso to arrive I glanced at the other options on sale and started to worry that I should have chosen one of the enormous home made sausage rolls, or perhaps the Mediterranean salad. Any regrets were soon forgotten when I tasted my sandwich, but I do feel the need to return soon to try the rest of the menu. All that I would change is that I'd prefer to not have a take away cup for my coffee when I'm sitting in, I'd like a real plate for my sandwich and I'd like to option to have the sandwich heated up. That's all that's preventing me from giving a 5th star and it all sounds like the kind of thing that will be sorted out over the next few weeks. The cafe itself is a very relaxing space in which to sit. It's on a corner and gets a lot of natural light and it's far enough from the city centre that it's relatively quiet. There are a couple of comfy sofas, a couple of tables and a small bar to sit at. The staff are friendly and obviously keen for the place to succeed - they were offering tasters of their sandwiches, as well as fliers with a 20% discount, and were chatting to people who were passing in the street. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them. If nothing else, I need them to stay open long enough for me to try the rest of their food.

The Purrple Cat Cafe was one of the first ones to come to Glasgow…read more It's a great space for the cats to play in with plenty of space to relax and enjoy a wee cuppa and cake. I have also enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with my husband which my sista from another mista gifted me for my birthday. It was absolutely delicious. The coffee and cakes are always really good. The cats are absolutely adorable, playful and you can see that they are well looked after. On my last visit they had siamese kittens who were just the cutest. I am gutted that it's now permanently closed. They took the hard decision and closed their doors on 31st December 2025. They had done amazing over the many years and it will be sorely missed in Glasgow. They are now focusing on their new charity, Purrple Cat Rescue, and I wish them all the best in helping all the kitties who need a home.
