My sweater was in peril of snagging and I was afraid to wear it! The owner of Lou Lou's found the perfect buttons to match my sweater, faster than I could say 'cashmere thread.' Also, he showed me an autographed drawing of Cher Horowitz in 'Clueless' from the costume designer Mona May. Apparently he made buttons for the movie. Lou Lou Buttons is such a gem. The person I assume is the owner is incredibly passionate about buttons. I wish I could be even half as passionate about something the way he is about buttons. He was quick to help me figure out exactly what kind of button I needed and went out of his way to give thoughtful recommendations for projects I could do with some of the other buttons I was drawn to. I was heading to M&J Trimmings for buttons to liven up a black jacket, when I spotted Lou Lou, tucked away on a side street. I wanted hot pink silk buttons, but they were not to be found, alas. So I bought pretty white silk corded ones, which I can dye. There's a very nice selection here, and the man running the store was helpful and polite. There's a LOT of horn and bone buttons, as well as beautiful crystal buttons, gold bee buttons, and a small selection of pins. Prices are fair. These days when I check in to a place in Houston's chinatown I don't press the check in buttons, I press the Lou buttons, because everyone knows that Lou is the king of Chinatown and always shall be. This is a pretty wonderful button store, which actually is probably the best of its kind in the world as far as I'm concerned, and as far as many others have said. It's nothing short of wonderful and magical in here, as they have the greatest selection you could ever imagine, it'll blow you away, but not literally because NYC isn't that dangerous anymore. If you're missing a button then this absolutely has to be the place to come. They can even manufacture button for you with dye and it will end up looking exactly the way you want it too. Pretty amazing really. Prices aren't bad for NYC, especially if you consider this is NYC. Service is great. Selection incomparable. read more

I had a specific purpose in mind--finding buttons for the knitted cardigan that I am nearly finished with--but easily got distracted due to all of the different options! The shop keeper was knowledgeable and did not mind that my friend and I compared several options before picking out which buttons we liked best. There are lots of different choices and price points, from the truly extravagant (crystal bumblebees that he said they had designed for Gucci) to the elegant (lovely mother of pearl and horn) to the basic (standard and nondescript options when your buttons are not supposed to be the star of the show.) While this is a relatively small store, they manage to cram in tons of choices and will help you pick what you need! If you somehow cannot find what you want, they will even make or dye it to order. Roz from Lu Lu Buttons was a life savior for helping me look amazing for a gala. I purchased a sequin jacket from Amazon, and the buttons on the jacket were not elevated. I walked into Lu Lu Buttons, where a friendly welcome greeted me. I asked Roz his opinion on what would jazz up the jacket. He was patient and showed me different options. Roz showed me beautiful buttons, and I learned he actually made them himself. Roz has a rich history, and I was flattered when he shared that I remind him of Donna Summers--the Black Queen of Disco. Zero star could not even fit for this horrible place. This is the first time I have ever experienced discrimination. The sales(maybe the owner) has a extremely awful attitude only towards me. He did not help at all for picking up different buttons and even asked me to do his jobs ( putting all the boxes back by myself). He even created some crazy "rules" for customer: not able to try more than two buttons at the same time. The most horrible thing is that, after I told him the button on the table is the ones I wanted, he refused to find out the price by himself and asked me to bring out the boxes for him. After I said no, he refused to sell the buttons to me. This store and its employees are ridiculous, try it if you wanna ruin your day :) read more

Love Love Lou Lou's *sigh* This is a small, no, tiny shop that has a great selection of buttons arranged neatly in a way that you can browse and linger ( drool) over without your eyes crossing. This is a tiny place, the owner, very nice and helpful without getting on my nerves , sometimes there is an older gentleman( the owner's dad??) also nice. I have other button resources, but I always return to this one for it's relaxed atmosphere, selection and variety of sizes. When I have a specific button in mind ( motif - lip shaped, not out of plastic, intricately carved wooden buttons that are oversized and can be worn on their own as jewelry...or need inspiration for a next project) Even though there are stores with a bigger button collection, I have the most fun here and the service is always 5 stars. read more

Beautiful shop and nice service. Quite small but it's like a button wonderland once you walk in there. So many options to choose from. There are vintage ones, modern or cartoonish ones, simple or regular ones but very good quality, historical figure ones and much more. Lovely shop and a little walk but still doable from the subway. My second visit to Lou Lou Buttons and my second time being delighted. First visit was to find a replacement button for my suit jacket. I was overwhelmed with the choice and pleased to get some advice as an exact match wasn't possible but three new buttons worked just as well. In addition to my buttons I came away with some excellent 'off the beaten track' NYC sightseeing tips. My next visit was earlier this week to find a replacement for a lost overcoat button. Again an exact match wasn't possible but what I came away with was something better - a contrasting leather covered set of buttons which, now I've had them sewn on, actually look better than the originals! It's difficult to imagine how any button supplier could provide a better service. read more

The owner took one look at each item and found *exactly* the buttons I needed in less than 30 seconds for each jacket -- no exaggeration. He also noticed that most of the mother-of-pearl buttons on one jacket were broken, and he gave me helpful advice on how to prevent the replacement buttons I had just purchased from breaking during dry-cleaning (cover them with aluminum foil). read more

I'm not a seamstress or anyone who is particularly crafty so I was definitely out of my element looking for a button store. I went to M&J (around the corner) first and I couldn't find anyone to help me. I then tried Lou Lou's and it was a much more comfortable experience. I think the shopkeepers name was Maggie and she was very helpful. I was worried that the buttons I liked wouldn't be big enough for the button-holes in the coat I was repairing. Maggie assured me that they would fit and told me that if they didn't I would be able to return them no problem. They have a lot of variety. Maggie was helpful. Although the lady at the front pointed me in the right direction of similar buttons to the one I brought in as an example, they didn't really offer any help otherwise.
