Howdy folks. How are all of my "Nasty" Yelpers doing? Nasty Nathanial here and it is time for another "Nasty" review. But the place I am about to write about is mighty nasty. But in a good way. I take that back. Not a good way. More like a great way. This review is about my all time favorite bar in all of Santa Maria. Yes that is right. Ok here goes. Ok I hear people on Yelp throw the term "dive bar" around real loosely. Years ago a so called dive bar was a place that you wanted to avoid. But nowadays it seems like certain dive bars have become novelties. In some ways the term "dive bar" has become somewhat cliche. But whether you want to consider this place I am about to write about a so called "dive bar" or not, it is a great watering hole and let me tell you about it right now. Louie B's is nice hole in the wall bar located directly across the street from the Towne Center Mall on Main Street. It's been there for years and has been a favorite among st Santa Maria residents, including myself. I first started going there shortly after turning 21 in good ol'.... Lets leave out the year I was born. ;-) From the moment that I first walked inside I fell in love with the place. I read something that somebody wrote about the decor being behind the times, but that they still loved the place. That is how I feel about Louie B's. And you know what? The place still looks the same as it did when I first started going there many moons ago. I'm really not that old though. But seriously I really dig the fact that the place hasn't been remodeled and turned into some fancy smancy nightclub where only snobbish types go. The drinks are cheap and the bartenders make them really stiff. Hey, hey. They also make the best margaritas in town. I am 100 percent serious about this. Louie B's margaritas are exactly the way I feel that a good margarita should taste. To this day I have not been able to find a bar that mixes a margarita quite like Louie B's does. Some have come close. But no other place can make em' like Louie B's does. I don't know how they do it, but they sure do it right. Another thing about Louie B's is it is one of those bars where everyone knows your name. Kind of like Cheers. Ok maybe I am going a bit too far. But as a regular, you will be treated like family. You know this is the kind of place where when you grab a seat up at the bar you'll be greeted with a friendly, "Hey Nathanial. Having a margarita today?" The'll know your drink and how you like it. Now that is the sign a good of a good bartender. I can still picture ol' Louie himself fixing me up a good stiff drink. RIP Louie. I can't write this review without mentioning Louie B's owner, the legendary Jim. This is a good guy who runs a first class operation and treats his customers well. If I could send out a personal message to Jim, I would say to him that you run the best bar in the whole Santa Maria Valley. Keep up the good work sir. So you if you want to good stiff drink that won't bust up your wallet in a place where the decor is outdated, but oh so groovy, and where the folks there know your name, then head on over to Louie B's. Bartender was only interested in serving the locals, obviously by walking by us while we sat at the high top tables, then again while I got up and stood at the bar, waiting to order. Left after 10 minutes. Went down to "Old English Tavern" In the old Beautiful Santa Maria hotel, lots of character and courteous staff! Was acknowledged immediately sat for a couple hours and left the bartender a nice hefty tip! $$ Thank you blondish bartender for ignoring us, you lead us to a super cool bar! read more

The service was less than satisfactory on a day that this very rude bartender was working. I was just inquiring about prices and was slightly disheartened with her explanation, and she refused to serve me. I wasnt violent, threatening or in any way a menace and she literally would not serve me I've always been a quiet, paying customer the few times ive been there but this was not a good bartender. The Bar of Last Resort. Are you 40+, washed up, alcoholic, probably divorced, and can't get anyone to even look at you anywhere else? This might just be the perfect bar for you. It also seems to be the only place to play pool, unfortunately. The overpriced beer ($5 for a blue moon, really?), bartenders that ignore you, and the crowd all turned me off, despite the DJ actually playing some pretty good music. Wish there were more pool halls in Santa Maria. If you don't fall into the above groups, don't bother. You'll have your pick of creepy old men and women, drug dealers in the parking lot, and tough guys following you out for a piece of you. Not worth it. read more

This place is a total dive, and seems to be mainly for the hispanic crowd. I've heard of lots of trouble here, and someone I know was mugged in the parking lot. Yes, it's a dive, but you know that going in so that can't really be a complaint. I think the beers are too expensive and they don't have any on tap. $4 for a bud light at a nice place I can tolerate, but not here. The low rating is for the fact that they have started charging a $5 cover charge to get in. I like the DJ's they have and it was always a good place to stop cause you didn't have to pay like you do at Rancho. I'm sorry, but unless something spectacular is going on, I think a cover charge is ridiculous. especially if you're just stopping in and not planning to stay. Bartenders are very nice, the people you see inside are quite scary so make sure you're prepared. Bathrooms are pretty gross. In my opinion this is the best bar in town. The bartenders are badass, especially around noon tuesday - saturday. There is a pretty regular crowd and everyone is way friendly ish. I have not been in this place in about 15 years or so, but it was my favorite place to hang. The bartenders were friendly for the most part, and would even engage in dice and blackjack at the bar. There was a "no smoking" ordinance from the city in effect, but not only could people smoke there, they supplied ashtrays, and sold cigarettes! I was really impressed. Don't know if they do that anymore. I hope so. I am going to make a visit soon to Louie B's! I need to know the name of the current owner. I want to do a music video there for youtube. Yes this place IS a dive, and the decor is behind the times and the patrons leave something to be desired... but I love it still! Probably because of all those reasons ;) I live in LA and we drive up to the Central Coast about every 6 weeks. We always make sure to stop in on a Wednesday or Thursday Night. Our first time checking out this spot was also our favorite bartenders first night as well. AJ is awesome! We love playing suffleboard and this is the best board we have found in ALL our bar adventures. The pool tables are good too. We just wish there was a dartboard, lol. The jukebox has some good tunes and the pinball game in the corner is fun. The drinks are cheap and strong and there is plently of room to sit and mingle. Karaoke nights are funny. We've been there a few times before when the owner was there and he is a good natured man who is open to our criticism and praise. We were glad that he actually remembered us after our first meeting when we ran across him again 2 months later. One more reason why this bar is like 'Cheers' for us. read more

Denied me at the door for an expired out of state ID "like I can do anything about it" but let in the 2 girls in front with expired ID's right in without a glance. I guess they only discriminate against the tourists. You should be looking at them all the same before pretending to be Mr NotSoHollywoodBlvd Bouncer and learn how to treat tourists instead of just acting in the manner you did... oh and the other ID's were sooooo expired so you may wanna be more on that. This is a total dive...and not in a good way, the place is very outdated which is fine, you kinda expect that in dive, but the feeling or "vibe" is not a very good one, the bartenders are not at all professional and can be rather rude, and the patrons are some the worst examples of Santa Maria you will find. The sad part is that it used to be a fun place, a little grimy and sorta sketchy but overall fun and safe not so anymore! Oh and if you want a water between drinks they will charge?!
