While my father, James Scanlon, was a devout Catholic, I could not think of anyone else to make our arrangements than my best friend, Christy Ann. As you already know, she is the ultimate spokesperson for your business. She and Charlene were on top of every detail allowing us to grieve without worrying about arrangements. This review is not for the queasy. My dad's body was shipped from the funeral home in South Florida to Louis Suburban chapel in New Jersey for burial at our family plot on Long Island. At the cemetery, I asked to view the body because I wanted to verify that it was indeed, my father. Arial, the driver of the van, told me that that wouldn't be possible cause they had been unable to open the coffin. I told him there is absolutely no way that you're going to bury this coffin without me, verifying who is in there. He continued to say that there was a problem opening it. My husband and my brother-in-law were easily able to lift the lid of the wooden coffin. But inside there was the metal shipping container. I said to Arial, "we can't bury him in a metal container. This is a Jewish burial." He started to say again that there was a problem opening the lid. But I could see there were very simple clips that could be snapped open. So then he tried to tell us that my dad requested that he be buried in the metal liner. That is complete BS. I know what my dad wanted and I know what the contract said. I insisted that my dad be taken out of the metal shipping container and placed in the wooden coffin in his shroud. Ariel tried to tell me that in order to do that he would have to drive back to New Jersey. We had the whole family gathered at graveside, and my sister and I had a flight back to Florida that night. There was no way he was taking my dad's body back to New Jersey. He kept going back-and-forth between the fact that they couldn't open the lid to the fact that my dad wanted to be buried in the metal container. Someone in the family suggested that perhaps we could drive off to a private place at the cemetery and family members could help Ariel properly put the body in the wooden coffin. Legally, only someone who works at a funeral home with a proper license, is allowed to handle a dead body. But there was no way we were going to allow my dad to be buried the way he was currently prepped. Again, my husband and my brother-in-law were easily able to snap open the metal shipping container. And what we found inside was my dad wrapped in a plastic bag and there were cooling gel packs in the shipping container. We were beyond horrified. And my dad's body was warm. He should have been kept cold from the funeral home until the cemetery. I don't think they even refrigerated him at Louis suburban. So my husband, my brother-in-law, and one cousin took the metal container out of the coffin. They took the body out of the plastic bag, out of the metal container, and into the wooden coffin. They properly adjusted him in the coffin and made sure he was completely covered with the shroud. And then we were able to proceed with the funeral service. I have never been so horrified as I was seeing the way that they treated my dad's body. I don't think that anyone at Louis Suburban Chapel ever even opened the coffin when it arrived from the airport. They certainly didn't take care of it the way they should have. read more

Wonderful facility. No one wants to plan a funeral for their spouse at my age, especially during Covid, which has made everything harder, but Christy Ann and staff made an agonizing experience as comforting as possible. She guided me through every decision, including complex issues caused by varying levels of religious observance, and helped me create a loving tribute to my husband that was worthy of the life he lived. Louis Suburban Jewish Memorial Chapel arranged my mother's funeral today. They were caring and thoughtful and did not try and push any extra expenses. They delivered exactly what they promised. Louis Suburban was more reasonably priced than another chapel offering the same services. My dad died, he didn't weigh much at that point, Ricky sent over one guy to transport his body. The one guy was just going to sling my dad's body over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. I helped instead. I believe for the $4,464 (no parlor service, just graveside and didn't include the $3K to cemetery) my dad should have been treated with a bit of respect (I paid $295 just for the pick up from the hospice). Ricky didn't know what Smicha is. It is religious ordination basically and he didn't know even the basic terms of religious Judaism which is scary and alarming imo considering his services are geared towards the Jewish community. I Paid $1295 for basic services which included basic services of funeral director and staff but I don't understand why graveside service is $325 extra plus $350 for hearse (I arranged for my own Rabbi privately) and an additional fee of $60 for gratuities (the young non Jewish lady representing the funeral home rushed us and actually left before the funeral( the cemetery needed additional time to dig the hole so we waited on eruv Shabbos for over an hour for them to finish and almost didn't have a minyan, $100 for refrigeration, $360 for the Tahara but an additional $350 for use of the room (wouldn't the room be included in the basic charge at a Jewish funeral home?) I paid for copies of the death certificate but received none. Apparently, the $1295 basic services fee didn't actually cover any of the staff despite the bill saying so. I have no idea why I paid a tip to someone was paid $325 for graveside service where there wasn't any actual services rendered and left before the funeral! In Jewish, we bury the same or the next day, death is sad for the living, I felt taken advantage of and grossly overcharged. When I was a kid in Fair Lawn and worked as a delivery boy in high school and wasn't religious yet, I delivered ham sandwiches from Angelo's Italian Kitchen to Ricky's house, that should have been the red flag. Pigs aren't kosher. read more

Cristie Ann, funeral director at, Louis Suburban Jewish Chapel, was sensitive and warm. She showed patience and understanding when we were at our lowest. AND The price was extremely reasonable.
