My friend and I were driving from AZ to CO and happened to stop in Cortez for lunch, service was very friendly and the food was awesome!

We stayed in Cortez for the night just passing through, and stopped by the Loungin' Lizard for dinner after a long day of traveling. This place is just cool. The staff were great, and the menu was well thought out and creative, and it's just a cool, hip little place. We ordered Colorado Country Fried Chicken with Green Chile mashed potatoes. Now I don't leave Yelp reviews, but this place was so good I was inspired. Honestly this may have been the best meal I've had in the last year. It was outstanding. Since I wasn't a local I had the staff pic which local beer they would recommend and which dessert and they too were fantastic. I live 1200+ miles away and I'm trying to figure out a way to get back for another meal. I can't recommend this place enough. Do not miss. read more

The food was alright. The host was horrible. He yells, come in and sit wherever you want. So there were two tables available and we seated ourselves according to his command. He then comes over and says, "Where is your fifth person?" There was a sign on the table that said for parties of five, however his vocal command was contrary. I stated, "You said to sit anywhere." He said "Oh, I thought you could read!" "I can read thank you, however you said to sit wherever." So he made us move to a table they hadn't cleaned yet. The food was not great and we decided to share a piece of cheesecake. The cheesecake was horrible at best. Never to go into this place again. I might add that he said that statement that night to others and they continued to sit at those two tables only to be moved by him. Most just left. read more

I've only been to this restaurant twice, but both times were great. They take standard menu items and add a twist. Like green chili mashed potatoes. Several other items have a southwest influence. Service has been great. Just enough attention without pestering you. Margaritas are good but not great. I guess I am not used to post Covid process but they seem kinda high to me. $10 for a not too big margarita. I'll go back the next time I'm in town. Stopped in for dinner one night last week. The food was good but not great. There were 4 of us and we all ordered different entrees consisting of a salad, burger, chicken, and a pasta dish. No steak, seafood, or anything exotic. No appetizers or dessert. No cocktails. We still managed to drop $80 on dinner. Probably not my first recommendation for breakfast. My guess is they are better for dinner and drinks cause their menus looked pretty good for that. Server was just terrific. Otherwise I would have given 3 stars. My eggs were over cooked, bacon over cooked, toast tasted weird, but potatoes were very good. My wife's burrito was better than my meal. Gumbo was quite good but more of a western style, not New Orleans. I asked if it came with cornbread or anything and the server came back and told me it was chicken and sausage? Buffalo w/ pork belly burger very good. The 3 berry cobbler was made fresh that morning, but without the ice cream (lactose) just wasn't worth the $7. If you like your menu laced with green chili's then you'll LOVE this menu. I'm a real lightweight when it comes to "spicy", so the onion soup was my dinner tonight and it was fabulous! But, the BEST part of dinner was the Cesar Salad. It was exceptional! My husband had the White Chicken Chili and loved it. We shared lovely warm, homemade dinner rolls and Triple Chocolate Ice Cream. The ice cream has a unique texture and a delightful taste. It's also homemade and really good, but not typical chocolate ice cream. The nicest thing about this cute restaurant/bar is the staff. We found this business on yelp and went there because it was close to our hotel. Ambience was great, food was delicious. My husband's bison burger topped with pork belly was delicious moist and cooked to perfection. The bread tasted homemade. Our pulled pork nachos were hot crispy smokey and delicious. An unexpected ending was the homemade ice cream that was amazing. Vanilla bean ice cream with caramel and pistachios. Each couple decided to split a scoop since we were so full. Boy was that a mistake. It was officially the best ice cream I've ever had. Rich and creamy like Häagen Dazs only better because it was homemade and fresh. We were fighting over our share in the bowl. LOL it had rained just prior to us arriving, otherwise we would have loved to sat out on the patio. Our waitress was very friendly and the service was great. We were in town for our daughter's wedding and she was about to get married herself. I feel bad that I can't remember her name. This was such a find in the middle of Cortez! My husband and I are road tripping and were starving after several hours in the car. This spot was such a fun place to stop and take a break. The food was excellent, and the service was superb. My husband had the Bison Cheddar Burger with Pork Belly. Oh my word. I immediately had meal envy! The seasoning on the fries alone was to die for. Salty and complex. Delicious! I had the soup and salad combo which was good. I had the French Onion Soup and Caesar Salad. My salad had a little too much dressing for my taste, and there was a flavor I couldn't quite identify that I didn't care for. My husband and I have been there twice now and it's delicious. We have several other friends here in town who frequent it more often and have nothing but good to say about anything they've had. Today we had the elk burger and the blackened chicken sandwich. On our previous visit, we had the gumbo and the pork belly tacos. All four of these choices were amazing! We've heard their desserts would make you slap your mother-in-law :-) Highly recommend it. It is limited in seating, but worth the wait. Wasn't gonna review this place -- the locals seem happy with the grub dished up here, and Cortez is a sleepy little ag town -- but the Rioja Vega, decided the deal. Last Sunday, the 24th, I started my experience here with a "Fresh Lime Margarita." The drink tasted ok, but was very weak, probably a single shot of tequila in a 16 oz. glass. My wife ordered a Caesar salad with blackened shrimp. It was basically a bowl of chopped romaine, lightly dressed with a commercial-tasting dressing, with some croutons and black crusted, overly seasoned shrimp. I ordered a poblano relleno. It was "tempura battered and fried," served on a portion of polenta, with a dollop of spicy marinara, and a drizzle of a maybe cilantro aioli. The waitress, who was actually an owner, but didn't identify herself as such, talked up how delightful it would be, and somewhere on their Facebook page, it says they prepare nothing ahead of time -- so I bit. You can tell from the photo I posted, that the polenta was not fresh -- it was dry and grainy. The filling of the relleno consisted of asadero cheese and some black beans and kernel corn. Bland. Some goat cheese or herbs would have jazzed it up a little. The pepper, admittedly out of season, was thin-walled, tough, with little or no heat or poblano flavor. Here's the killer, though. The tempura coating, not the expected light, crisp, translucent product, was thick, dry and leathery. The filling was steaming, the coating not hot enough to melt the aioli, especially not hot and glistening from the fryer -- check the photo. I'm sure this item was made way way ahead, and heated up with the use of that common household appliance that does not belong in any professional kitchen (IMHO). The "waitress" returned -- I did eat all but most of the coating -- asked how it was, and I told her exactly what I wrote above. She was defensive, and while she sort of apologized for the dish not living up to expectations, I could tell she took my comments personally. We ordered the blueberry crumble dessert. It was served by the husband of the "waitress," the "chef" and other owner, who inspected me curiously as he delivered it, without identifying himself. That's just odd. As someone else pointed out, the crumble has too little fruit and too much topping, and it's too large. Most of the few reviews of this restaurant are written by people who have few reviews to their credit, something that always looks suspicious. Back to the Rioja Vega. I had a glass of it -- not a generous pour -- after the marg, served by another, very nice waitperson. When the bill came, that glass wasn't on it. I pointed that out to the "waitress," and she printed up a fresh bill with the wine on it. That was where she lost the good will and the benefit of considerable doubt. I left a decent tip anyway, figuring she needed it. read more
