Mexican food is pretty simple. A lot of places try to get fancy and end up messing it up. El Campestre just keeps it simple and does it really well. The chicken enchilada was excellent. Rice and beans were exactly right. The chicken fajitas were hot, flavorful, and cooked just right. The fried ice cream was great too. I wouldn't call it a hole-in-the-wall, but the atmosphere is pretty bare bones. That's okay because the food is the reason to come here. Great prices, friendly service, and really good Mexican food. El Campestre Mexican restaurant has made some major changes. We walked in and found the dining room had changed with tall, rustic wooden booth dividers with hand-carved horse designs. The bench-style seats were covered with maroon leather. The whole atmosphere inside had changed, and one could easily eat in privacy. The food is delicious, with Chef Carlos preparing flavorful dishes found nowhere else. We especially like his Chicken Fajitas, Tacos al Pastor, Pork Carnitas plate, Campestre Tamales, Verde Enchiladas, and Fish or Shrimp Street-Style Tacos. Coming back from Mesa Verde, my husband and I stopped at El Campestre for lunch. It's a very small Mexican restaurant with very authentic, delicious food. We were seated and greeted immediately with fresh chips and homemade salsa. I had the spinach enchiladas which were very flavorful and my husband enjoyed a combo plate with a tamale and enchilada. I also had the drink special of the day, a peach margarita, which was a little sweet for my taste; next time I would opt for a regular margarita. The service was quick, attentive, and friendly. I placed a Togo order. I had a chicken chimichanga meal which came with rice / beans as well as guacamole. The chimichanga was cooked the way I like with the tortilla being crispy and the meat tender and juicy. The beans and the rice were ok. As a Mexican man who grew up appreciating great Mexican gastronomy, I felt this place fell short on flavor and ingredients. The chile relleno burrito was smothered in a canned-tasting sauce with little to no salt and way too much cumin. The enchiladas had the same lackluster sauce. Presentation could also use some improvement. The beans were definitely the highlight great flavor, almost like chorizo, and possibly made with lard, which gave them a really good taste. Overall, 2 stars. Not terrible, but fresher ingredients, better seasoning, and improved presentation would make a big difference. Honest feedback only makes food better. read more

As a native Texan I know we don't hold exclusive rights to Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine but the food here is fantastic! Service was good too as our waitress was quick to refill waters and check on us. I would recommend this place to anyone passing through Cortez read more

Visiting Cortez and saw El Campestre had very good reviews... right away just from the salsa I knew we had hit the jackpot! Food is hot and cooked fresh to order. Ordered the special of the day which was Pollo Ranchero and the drink special which was the cucumber jalapeño margarita and both were absolutely outstanding!!! I have traveled all over the country and this is easily the best Mexican food I have ever had. Our server Alberto was so wonderful and attentive. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would!! This had good reviews which doesn't mean much with all the fake ones now days but this place was legitimate. The service was great. We walked in the door and were seated anywhere we wanted. It was a bit crowdedded but they got our food quickly. The kitchen is in plain sight and the cooks were working very hard. I always start to judge a Mexican restaurant by the chips and salsa. Both were very good. Not just the hot-stuff blended into a liquid but had actual chunks of all the good stuff. The decor is not that fancy but with good food there is no need for frills. We can both confidently say that they were the best enchiladas we have ever had, and they were piping hot too! The Sauce on the Enchiladas Chipotle was especially incredible! This sauce had a good kick to it so definitely stay away from this one if you don't like spice! The food was good, the chips and salsa were excellent but we had to request more and even though the salsa was empty at the same time we asked for more chips, the salsa wasn't refilled. The drinks - I had a horchata that tasted like melted vanilla ice cream, I couldn't drink it so I ordered a rum and coke which was very bottom shelf rum and flat coke :( AND the waiter didn't ask why I didn't drink my horchata, he just brought the rum and coke in addition to the other drink just sitting there. My wife and I went with some neighbors to dinner last night. We have eaten at no less than 30-40 Mexican food restaurants in Colorado, Arizona, Southern California, and Mexico. Each has a unique food taste and style of preparation. We would rank El Campestre near the top of all the restaurants we have visited. Last night the dishes we had were Chicken Fajitas Burrito, Camarones (shrimp) al la Crema, Nachos Supreme Appetizer as a main dish, and Shredded Beef Taco and a Fish Taco. Everyone remarked how good the food tasted. I loved the Fish Taco. The portions were generous and two of us took take-home boxes. The guys ordered Margaritas. My friend had a Regular Margi on ice, which he loved. I ordered a Traditional Margarita and had it blended. They were excellent. I could easily have enjoyed a second one, but we were nearly finished with our meal. They have a lunch menu, and a daily special posted on the wall. There were some good items listed there to try. The service was very good and we received our food quickly. Chips and salsa were nice and not too spicy. We will go back soon to sample many of the large array of other items they have to offer. read more

Tried this the 2nd night we were in town. Reviews show it to be top rated. Food was good, a little different than what were used to. Salsa was very different, but had a really good flavor and just the right amount of heat. We had 2 orders of fajitas, beef and chicken, 1 relleno plate and chicken crema enchiladas. We were visiting from southern AZ. The service was ok. Food was just average. Shredded beef Chimichanga had little or no seasoning in the meat. I'm a big fan of chili verde. The meat was tasteless and overcooked. Tasted like it was added to the sauce after being cooked. All the flavor was in the sauce. The Mango Agua fresco was good. Salsa was good but was never offered refills on chips, salsa, or water. It was just average all around. We also tried Mi Mexico a half mile down the road, and it was very good; a 4.75/5. read more

Well this is where Yelp excels. We're from Oregon on a summer road trip. Found this place and it's many outstanding ratings and decided to try it. Wow. 6:30 PM on a Thursday evening and the place is packed. We ordered to go, because our chihuahua has separation anxiety, and we were out in just over 30 minutes. Service was great, seemed to be a family owned business, and everyone was busting their butts to take care of the customers. And when we got back to our hotel a few blocks away the food was everything the reviews said it was. I had outstanding beef cremas enchiladas, my go to Mexican dish, and my wife had something with steak and shrimp that was excellent too. I totally recommend and wish we had a restaurant like this at home. A couple of tips. The place is in a small building on the north side of Main Street and it can sneak up on you. It's just east of McDonalds. The driveway and parking lot is small, and when we got there no spots were available. Not an inconvenience... They are that great! Wife ran in and ordered, we went and topped off our gas for the next days trip, and when we got back a spot was available and meal was ready. When you go, bring some patience and a good appetite.
