I came across Love + Flour's booth at Snowport in Boston, so this review is for their baked goods and not the physical location. But now that I know they're in Salem, I'll be visiting very soon! The macarons were front and center in the booth, and I kept goggling at how beautiful they were. They are slightly larger macarons with generous fillings and bejeweled shells ($3.75 each). I asked the person manning the booth what her favorites were (sugar cookie and cookie dough), but I still had trouble deciding which to try, there were so many unique flavors. She was very helpful though. Macarons are generally gluten free, but some flavors had cookie or cake crumbs and were labeled as containing gluten (fyi all served in the same case). These macarons were certainly not dairy free, but I decided to try them anyways; they were way too tempting. The Tall Man and I ended up getting a guava and a gingerbread macaron. His dad got a pistachio and a cosmic brownie (typical brownie vs the peppermint version). If I had known he was going to get some, it would have made more sense to get a half dozen. Macarons aren't cheap cookies, but they were certainly worth it. The guava was the plainest in appearance and taste. It wasn't decorated, and only the shell was flavored not the cream; it was too subtle and could have used a jam. The gingerbread was my favorite of our choices, spicy and not overly sweet with a nice textural crunch with the mini gingerbread sprinkles. The cosmic brownie had fun chunky sprinkles and a very fudgy texture, which was more brownie than macaron like (probably intentionally), but the taste was like a typical brownie so I would get something different next time. I didn't get to try the pistachio, but my father in law enjoyed it, and he doesn't even like cookies. Everything on display was beautifully fun to look at. I was also intrigued by their hot chocolate bombs and cake jars, but more as eye candy since they were full of gluten and dairy (but would make for great gifts!). read more

i ordered a cake for my daughters birthday, sent inspo pictures and asked for ariel on the cake. emailed back and fourth and put down a deposit. i went to pick up the cake, they won't even let you go inside, they came out to collect second half of payment and brought the cake out. I drove five minutes back home and looked at the cake- no ariel and 2 of the mermaid tales on the cake were broken in half. i called the shop and she tried to tell me "your husband called and said he didn't want ariel on the cake". My husband didn't even know where i got the cake so i knew this was a lie. after almost 3 weeks of calling, emailing, messaging on instagram and commenting on fb post, i received an email from jamie stating she was "checking in". i emailed back asking for her to please call me and once again gave my phone number and still have yet to hear back. this is the worst customer service i have ever dealt with. would not recommend love and flour after spending almost $300 on a cake and dealing with all of this unnecessary stress. read more

If I could give them 0 stars I would. This is the most unprofessional organization I've ever experienced. I ordered a cake tasting box from them for pickup and when I went to pick it up the shop was closed because of an error in their hours on their website. There was no effort to let people know the hours have changed, just closed for the day with zero warning. We've now been going back and forth with them, Jamie in particular, for a refund because at this rate we do not want to work with them for our wedding. Upon inquiry, they got right back to us, provided some suggestions on different types of cakes and had a very easy system to use to sign a contract. We purchased the wedding cake tasting box to decide on a flavor. Every flavor was excellent and it was so hard to decide which one to choose! We ended up picking the tasting box up in Newburyport and sat by the water to try the flavors (super fun date idea leading up to the wedding!). Nope. Wanted to love this place. The cake looked amazing. Really perfect looking. Unfortunately though, the cake itself was very dense, and the icing was basically butter. I know what you're thinking, "butter is a good thing in icing." Before having this cake I would've concurred. However, after having this cake, I realized that eating icing that is 90% butter isn't really what you're looking for in a tasty cake. Some balance would be much better here. You could prob melt the icing off this cake and use the butter for other applications. Unfortunately, in spite of how nice it looked, the cake was essentially a cake shaped stomach ache. The theme of the day/week was based mostly on Girl Scout cookie varieties. The Twix bar was good, not too sweet and I loved the chocolate ganache-like layer on top. I asked the owner Jaime to make me three large macarons, something I've never seen before, and she not only accepted the challenge but exceeded my expectations. I had briefly mentioned I may have wanted to stack them and she made the macarons in three different sizes so they would look good stacked. Totally above and beyond. The macarons were seasalt caramel, fruity pebble, and raspberry and even though they were a foot in diameter, they literally tasted EXACTLY like the mini ones, down to the caramel center. And they weren't hollow and so soft, even days after! Do you know how hard that is? Making a macaron is basically impossible to begin with but then to scale it 10x larger and make it delicious? Holy moly. I'm sure it wasn't easy but you can tell that Jaime and her team really care and go that extra mile. To top it all off my boyfriend bought some cupcakes and Jaime made sure to tell him to let it sit in room temp before he ate it. When he told her not to worry because he was going to scarf that bad boy down right now, she said "Wait! I'll get you a room temp one from the back then!" which was so thoughtful. Amazing! The perfect cupcake for even non-cupcake lovers. Went because of a Groupon offering half off (basically a bogo on cupcakes) and was so glad I did! The space is small, clean, and quiet - a simple but cute place to run in and grab goodies. I got two cupcakes and two macarons - the Dulce de Leche and Samoa cupcakes and lemon and French toast macarons. The woman at the counter was really helpful since it was my first time in their bakery. She explained that because they are buttercream and use real butter, they are best after left out at room temperature for bit (this felt like a revelation! Now I know why cupcakes seem so dry when cold!) so they can soften...and they did! I actually usually hate buttercream icing, but this was so decadent! Smooth and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, without the grainy or sharp sweetness of traditional buttercream. All the cupcakes were soft-textured and filled with different deliciousness. I tried the Samoa which was filled with a caramel sauce and had the perfect amount of coconut and chocolate. The French toast macaron was EXACTLY that - the perfect mapley imitation of the breakfast classic. I've tried many chain cupcake bakeries, like Sprinkles, Gigi's, etc. which have generally sworn me off cupcakes for their dryness. Definitely not the case here! I emailed about over a week and half ago almost two weeks. I then emailed three times again and called once. I figured it would take a while because it was a holiday week. I went in on Saturday and asked about the status of my inquiry, the girl at the counter asked for my name but never wrote my name down or nor did no one contact me until later in the week. They had reached out about if I wanted to continue, but I've never received a quote as they mentioned. I did email back again and still heard nothing. I called on Wednesday to arrange a pickup date and time and to pay for them only to be told we are busy I will call you back, but didn't even ask my name or phone. After an hour I had to call back. When we picked up our order it was not ready as promised. Waited 20 minutes only to go home and see 18 cupcakes missing, no gold dusting, no foil liners, no ingredients sticker. This review is based on both product and customer service. 1) I reached out to the owner multiple times to order a cake. I understand shops can be busy, but months of waiting and ignoring my response is unprofessional. I follow the shop on social media and it appears that the owner spends more time showing off her crop tops and stomach, and taking shots with her friends instead of taking and replying to customer orders. Maybe it's just me, but there should be a line between personal and business accounts and I would prefer to see my emails being answered then her outfit choice of the day. I have heard customer service here was bad but tried a few times as the products so look beautiful. 2) I ended up doing a walk in and buying some products from the case. We live so close by and my daughter was bugging me to go in and browse. When I tell you looks can be deceiving, this was the case. The cake was terrible. It was beautiful on the outside, they really have mastered this part. However if you are someone who cares about taste, do not buy these cakes. The inside was dry and flavorless and could have been thrown as a brick against the wall, and the frosting tasted like I was eating a stick of butter. It was the most disgusting butter cream I've ever tried. My daughter and I had an immediate stomachache after eating. This place is not cheap: there are so many small business owner bakeries in the Boston metro area that would blow this place away and have earned support and business, for both taste of products and customer service. I see the person boxing it up, which was supposed to be a birthday cake, ummm, it was a superbowl beanie! They messed up my order and were closing in 2 hours, luckily they made one before they closed. 3/2018 I've been waiting over 4 weeks to get a quote on a 40th birthday cake, and still nothing. Communication is horrible, as the saying goes, too many cooks in the kitchen cause chaos. Feb 2017 I requested a small cake 2 days before party that needed to be gluten free for under 10 people for celiac disease. Due to last minute a cake couldn't be made, BUT baker suggested a backup of cupcakes instead and we took it. The cake came out so beautiful i didn't even want to eat it cause I just wanted to stare at it all day the funfetti cake was the best cake I've ever ate in my life, so fluffy and delicious and the butter cream was out of this world !!!! 10/10 got so many compliments at my sons birthday. Only reason I'm giving them two stars is because their response time needs some improvement. I was referred by an event planner and she warned me that they are the worst when it comes to replying back to emails and returning phone calls but I thought, hey why not, I'll be the judge of that! So I went ahead and I emailed them on October 11th for a special cupcake order and then again on October 13th and it's November 4th and I still haven't heard back from them.
